- Alton Towers Resort's 'Secret Weapon' (SW) programme produces some of the World's most iconic rollercoasters, including SW4 which was Oblivion in 1998, the World's first vertical drop rollercoaster, and The Smiler in 2013 (SW7), the World's first 14 looping rollercoaster.

For those who are wondering, SW1 and SW2 were a prototype of arrows pipeline coaster (which never opened) John Wardley, who designed the ride, thought the ride wasn't exiting enough. That is why the first two secret weapons never opened.
The rides were combined (ish) in 1993 to create nemisis as ride animations that were guided by Mr. Wardley show if you kinda put the rides together invert the track and add a couple more turns you've got nemisis.
I really like the music, it's a combination of every theme of each SW with the sound of doomsday and armageddon
I also like how each theme on their own clashes with the next but here the mix it so well, each compliments the next. Best announcement video in a while.

Did you know that oblivion doesn’t have a full vertical drop. The drops angle is at around 88-89 Degrees

i think it was cus it was too risky or too expensive cus it would have caused damage to the trains back then. obviously nowadays they could because of how advanced everything is now

It's not really that secretive.
It was an experinental Arrow pipeline coaster, that was purposely built for both SW1 and SW2.
SW1 didn't happen because of funding issues, and SW2 failed because John Wardley found the prototype to be "boring" for a roller coaster.

@@Rancord123 No where in Wickerman's marketing was it called a worlds first, rides don't need to be a worlds first to be called a Secret Weapon. They just need to be on a big enough scale. Secret Weapon is usually for record-breaking, world first or Thrill Rides (Nemesis was the Europes first Inverted, Oblivion-worlds first verticle drop, Air- First Flying- Th13teen-first freefall drop, Smiler-14 inversions and Wicker Man-Europes first Wooden Rollercoaster in 20 years.)

No. It would've had the coke overlay, the Rehydrator would've looked different, Black Hole would be present, and most notably, the camera quality would be significantly better. It was filmed in 2016, when The Smiler's face was covered on the Rehydrator after the accident.

its to do with how innovative they are, eg.first inverted, the most loops, first top track. another example is that Rita was very inventive and as a consequence wasn't a SW, its not to do with money but more the idea of it

Secret Weapon just means hype. The 'world first' elements are also just for the sake of advertising, the novelty usually adds little to the ride experience overall, although it's cool that Alton Towers want to try different ideas. Don't let it get in the way of making great rides though. Look how Nemesis wasn't a world first and wasn't advertised as a 'european first', but instead it was a classic coaster because it was focussed on being a brilliant thrill ride instead. Most UK parks (Merlin) unfortunately make coasters to fit the advert now and not the other way around.

* air wasn't the first flying coaster, vekoma had it first with the flying Dutchman model. And oblivion wasn't the first vertical drop coaster as its drop isn't actually vertical. Its 88.5°.
* also Eejanaika was thr worlds first 14 looper. The track only inverts 3 times but due to the seat rotations, riders invert 14 times. Im a nerd ok
