  • I've been busy book hunting. In this haul there are important science fiction books from the 1970s all the way bang up to date with books released recently and all points in between. Hardbacks, paperbacks, 1st editions, all the good stuff. Who doesn't love a good book haul?

Some great additions to your collection, particularly liked seeing some of those hardcovers like "Songs of Earth and Power", "Solis", "Marauder" and "Service Model". I have read the Shoal Sequence trilogy by Gary Gibson and thought it was an enjoyable series.

Neverness is the first on what becomes The Requiem for Homo Sapiens which are worth tracking down. A favorite of mine from Jeter is Farewell Horizontal.

It's been a while, but I absolutely loved Neverness by David Zindell - so I'm so glad you have that one handy. I also recommend We Who Are About To... by Joanna Russ, and of course Other Days, Other Eyes by Bob Shaw.
The Glamour was an interesting read, but a little disappointing for me. I liked the premise and the writing, but the structureof the novel seemed to me to backtrack itself in a weird way. Forward momentum seemed to dissolve with the structure chosen. This is a distant memory of mine, though. I am jealous of that copy of The Separation, I must say - THAT is the Christopher Priest novel that is impossible to find in Toronto...or to order from somewhere without high shipping (ie. the UK!).

Attanasio! Great find. I run hot and cold on Attanasio, but one thing he never is is boring! Haven't read Solis yet, but apparently it's related to his novel Centuries, which I liked very much. I know you're not big on fantasy, but I *highly* recommend his Arthurian novel called The Dragon and the Unicorn. [NB: I seem to recall there's something missing some editions of The Dragon and the Unicorn, so if you decide to get it, make sure your edition contains all four parts: Prelude: The Mortal Gods (which starts "There is only one Dragon."); Book One: Dragon Lord; Book Two: Mistress of the Unicorn; and Epilog: Merlin: A Memory of the Future.]

Hi Matty, i have been known to dabble in fantasy from time to time, so who knows, i might seek it out. This is the first AAA book i own, not read any either, yet. Thanks for watching 👀!

I never enjoy actually reading hard covers but gosh they look great!
I read Lord Valentines Castle earlier this year and found the world building exquisite, but thought the back half of the story was very disappointing, my copy doesn't look nearly as nice as yours though!

I think the world building carried the book sufficiently well for me, i thiught it was great. Hb are a bit more awkward to read, and they take up more space, but somehow i keep acquiring them...

    Impressive work!
Just finished reading (and will be writing about) Eric Brown's first novel Meridian Days (1992); picked up the 1993 paperback edition and I believe it's been out of print since then. It was quite good, but I expect there is better stuff further into his career. Infinity Plus have made a lot of his work available as ebooks. Also, since he passed there has been a tribute anthology featuring Alastair Reynolds, Chris Beckett, Ian Watson, and others.
For some reason I've read more books by C. J. Cherryh than any other author I don't like (7). Downbelow Station is quite good but everything else I've read has been deathly dull - but your mileage may vary!

    • @SciFiScavenger

    Hey Jon!
Hope you had a good vacation!
Interesting list. Never heard of Attanasio before but he sounds like n interesting read.Didn´t know that Vonda McIntyre did also write none Star -Trek SF. Got to get her on my list. C.J.Cherryh is one of my favourite authors ever. Still, I miss most parts of the Foreigner series.
Man, Adam Roberts continues to awe me. ongrats for getting those books from him. Seriously, Adam (also Christopher Ruchio and Ken Mcleod) really left an impression on me.
On my own front, not much time to read currently. But(!) I had real luck on saturday - someone sold Burns/Harrisson´s Planet Story (German translation version which I didn´t even know that it existed) online for 6 Eurons. The cheapest I´ve seen it in two decades was 70 Euros (and normally for a three digit number). Hope the condition is as it was advertised.
    Have a good week!

Great score on Planet Story!! Sometimes we need a bit of luck in this book collecting game. I've really enjoyed chatting to the 3 authors. They don't get many views, but it doesnt really matter. I have another one coming up, in a month or two. All shall be revealed! Cheers Thorsten, thanks for watching 👀!

      @SciFiScavenger  Місяць тому

By the way, Vonda is also the author of a 4 book series, Starfarers (I think) which is based on an idea for a tv show she'd really like to have watched, which itself came from a trick she played at a panel at a con. Anyway, meant to be pretty good.

A whole batch of brand new books--- cool!
My father had lunch once with Mr David Cornwell, a.k.a. John Le Carré, as they were both in the Foreign Service--- of their respective nations, of course. I don't think they talked about books, though, as my dad only ever read non-fiction(kinda like me nowadays) and probably never touched a spy novel in his life.
I love PKD's Galactic Pot Healer, but sonehow I don't think it's your cup of tea. Too weird.
Oh, I've had Neverness sitting on my shelves for a few decades now, but never read it. Can't wait to hear your take on it, maybe it will motivate me.

That Baxter/Mcauley double is actually called Gollanzc binary. There are three others, one of them is Ken Macleod/Eric Brown, while I can't remember the other two. Reality Dust is a brilliant Xeelee novella, while Making History is very good Quiet War story. The Glamour and The Separation are Priest at his most brilliant. Pure masterpieces. Neverness is not really a space opera, but it is fantastic book. It was followed by Requiem For Homo Sapiens trilogy and new stand alone called The Remeberance's Tale. As for Eric Brown, my advice is to go with his short stories first. It's there that his talent truly shines. His novels are very good though. I finished Helix a few weeks ago and liked it quite a bit. Gary Gibson is nothing like Asher. He is way better. Thousand Emperors is a sequel to hi novel Final Days, but it's stand alone narrative. Maurader is also stand alone novel set in his Shoal Sequence.

'The Insider' is probably my favourite Evans novel, though I haven't read it in decades. The Shaws have gone up since I called him 'The Greatest Hard SF Writer You've Never Heard Of' on my channel about 18 months ago and of course being the man who coined the term Pan Lozenge, the series has also become more collectable. Those factors plus the fact that there is no Shaw in print for the last 20 years drives prices up- the story is that his beneficiaries want too much money from Gollancz for the right to reprint them.
Interestingly, the hardcover of 'The Separation' is not the first edition- the first is a trade paperback published by Simon & Schuster (but watch out, it was reprinted quickly). It was this that drove the nail into the coffin of CP's relationship with S&S and part of the deal of him moving to Gollancz was that they'd issue the book in hardcover.
'The Glamour' is the best Modern novel I've ever read of any kind, but there are four variant texts and the definitive one is the second edition (the US hardcover first or the Abacus paperback)- the text was revised and improved at request of the US publisher. The Simon & Schuster edition has the third text and the current Gollancz is the fourth edition (meaning fourth variant text). Chris had a habit of revising some works later on and the revisions didn't always work as well.
Love Attanasio, he's wild. Nice haul.
