Oh! My old fave Jack Vance. He died not that many (???) years ago. Lived in San Francisco CA and had a big sailing yacht in the harbour for all I can remember. My first read was the Star King because it was translated to Swedish and I wasn't that old by that time. I got it on a birthday. Before Vance I'd read some A E van Vogt, Heinlein (Have spacesuit, will travel) and such. Some Arthur C Clarke. But after the Star King I was hooked on Vance. And I had to wait until high school before I started reading in English seriously. By then I'd also found a Sci-Fi book shop open on voluntary basis (run by the SFSF - Swedish Association for Science Fiction and Fantasy). And then I started to binge and got the remaining four books in the Star King series. And not just Vance but Alan Dean Foster, C J Cherry, Harry Harrison and more. Oh, Tanith Lee! Hehe! With ADULT fantasy! Loved her books, too! English writer.
Jack Vance drove me up one wall and down the other. He is the sole reason to why I speak British English to this day and not American English. How so, you may wonder. Well... Vance writes, it seems to me, in a very formal and "older" English. Not the ancient one with all the thees and thous. But, honestly, how many authors uses words like "...zest and zeal..."? I think that is from the Dying Earth or Phantasms and magic. One of those, by the way, made me feel so unsettled I had to put it aside for a whole month before I could finish it. Oh, the Forlorn Encystment! Nice spell to use when you want people to disappear. The ground opens up under their feet and they fall into a tight space. For forever!
I remember desperately trying to decipher either Son of the Tree or Houses of Iszm. There was at least one word in every sentence I had never, ever seen before. So I underlined the ones I didn't know and then looked them up until I got really tired and decided to just plod on. And I might mention that every one of the strange words existed in the dictionary! I never saw them used before I read Jack Vance and never ever after. Now, I can't for the life of me (I hear voiced when I read and, no, I''m not a certified basket case) hear American English when I read his books.
I have at least 50 of his works and they were usually labeled Science Fantasy or Fantasy Fiction. I did say I binged, didn't I?
He has an amazing imagination. Who could invent thieves that are allowed to steal only what they needed as long as they wear red caps? And the city with the peoples that did never interact with each other. They smartly avoided each other if thy met in the streets. Then something happened (don't remember what), saw each other and then the slaughter started. The ISVU, the currency in many of his books. You earned one ISVU for each hour of hard, manual labour. And more amazing things.

Thanks so much for this! I really look forward to reading more Vance, and in an upcoming video i have some awesome Vance books I recently found! You also reminded me I've read Houses of Iszm, just cant remember much about it. Thanks for watching, and getting me excited for Jack Vance!

@@sciencefictionreads I've got Beneath the Shattered Moons handy...probably for soon. It looks weird - more Who Made Stevie Crye?, than Ancient of Days. My favourite by Bishop is always likely to be Brittle Innings, then No Enemy But Time.

Seems Golden Sunlands has complaints that there is no ending, that it had to have a sequel that never happened. A very Jabba's sail barge cover.

Believe it or not, that's about what those editions of Clark Ashton Smith really should go for, but the past few years there's been a lot of eBay speculators just putting *crazy* prices on shit and waiting for someone to grab it. No one does, but the next person who puts it up looks at the price's offered and says "I guess that's what they go for."
    They Don't.
All that being said, if you would like to pass it along do your friendly booster down in San Francisco. . . I'll send you $25 bucks. . .

    • @salty-walt

P.S. - careful when you read those editions, the covers curl up and out like nobody's business, easily, from one reading.

    • Oh I have that copy of Brave Free Men.
    • I have read all of The Dying Earth, and I didn't care for it. It's barely SF. Really it's fantasy. There was only one story I liked... 🤔 eyes or eye is in the title. That one was pretty funny and fun, but the rest were not good. It was creative though.
