DAVID BOWIE - ROCK'N'ROLL SUICIDE - LIVE TOKYO 1990

- There are magical moments of Music and Theatre, unique and unforgettable. And this is it. Even if inspired by Charles Baudelaire's "Le Fleurs du Mal", existential allegory of journey through the hell with its artificial paradises, Bowie has superbly painted another Love story of a human Being.
He's belting out, "You're Not Alone," to fifteen-thousand lonely kids. Truly one of the greatest, ever.
As a teenager today, the message is felt hard
1990
ahem...60,000 lonely kids..
Great comment
I was a suicidal homeschooler imprisoned in the house by my mother's threats of retaliation if I'd ever go so far as in the front yard or even out of my room at all. Sometimes she forgot to feed me. She's a schizophrenic who believes in caging offspring. Wasn't even allowed internet access, in order to cut me off from any and all outside information and contacts. My father knew everything but couldn't have cared less. Until he got a massive concussion at work. At which point my mother expected me to accompany him to doctor's appointments, to make sure he didn't fall and hurt himself because his brain equilibrium was so off. At the doctor's office, the Time magazine told the story of David Bowie's death and music. "Rock & Roll Suicide" told me everything that hurt. It took years and my mother and grandfather almost succeeded in gaslighting me into an institution to keep me from ever getting out and living to tell the tale of their addiction to sadism. But my grandmother came through at the last minute and saved my life from the retards, New Hampshire's idea of family and upright citizens. CPTSD and panic recovery have been taking years. But Bowie and his messages for outsiders to become superhuman like his alien character made me dream of being more, of not just overcoming the retards but superceding the average. His death before I could see him made me want to, NEED to, see and meet other heroes that I'd managed to sneak. These days, I've seen dozens of heroes old and new, am on track to go to UCLA, have been to 23 states, have met every member of KISS, and have just landed my first acting role. Bowie was an inspiration that I needed. I'm very healthy these days, but I needed this tonight. All my love, man. Wish you could know how much I needed you. Everyday I feel superhuman because of you.
Well done for your great recovery and doing the best with your life now! Many, many years ago i once read that this song saved a lot of people from suicide.
Best anti-suicide song I ever heard ... such positive words and feelings at the conclusion of the song, beautiful.
I am not sur ………… it’s will be my last song
1990
@@spkanava from ziggy stardust 1972
conversely kiss off by the violent femmes is the best pro-suicide song
Si! True...
That moment when Ziggy comes back to sing "you're so natural" just breaks my heart and makes me smile.
David worked hard to keep him locked up but he did sneak out every once in a while ;)
Thought it was me but Im happy Im not the only one who heard it, there was Ziggy for one brief moment 😊
Excactly♥️
@@esthermoret4525 well you're not alone! :) It seems many of you hear it. I don't. Sounds like Bowie to me. In all his forms.
@@mandymatti82 He sure did try to keep Ziggy locked up! Very funny! But Ziggy is a part of David, so can't hide him all the time.
"You're watching yourself but you're too unfair." This is something I hope my daughter will one day understand. This is one of my fave Bowie songs.
I know he's been gone from this earth for almost five years, but I hope somehow he'll know he saved my life several times with this song. May he rest peacefully and find life on Mars.
I’ve had moments listening to his music and wondered … does he know he is the theme song to several everlasting moments of some random Canadian guys life
mine too
1990
Don't make me cry, I'm at work :(
I often wonder how many thousands of lives David saved with this great song?
Ziggy Stardust is not dead. David took him to Mars. Thank you David. This version is perfect.
"YOU'RE NOT ALONE!!"
David truly meant it
You probably saved many many lives with this song mister.... You're wonderful, you're not alone...
I know right. I know he helps me with my pain everytime I log on to youtube. Love & miss him. Thank God for technology & youtube.
I'm sure that he did 💕
Mine included 💋
Happy Birthday Starman 🌠
1990
When I feel down, I remind to myself that David Bowie thought I am wonderful. And it helps a lot.
Thank you, Starman.
I love how he sings the line "it's so natural" in his old ziggy voice.
I'm fascinated by his changing voice.
The '72 and '76 Bowie sound like two different people. I'm surprised there's not been some loony conspiracy ala 'Faul' McCartney... ;-)
yeah, that´s really beautiful!
Yet even in his much later stuff there are moments when he pulls out one of his older voices again. Towards the end of 'The Next Day', when he sings "they know god exists for the devil told them so.
They scream my name aloud down into the well below" it's the voice from 'Hunky Dory' days!
@@rareflightlessbird Amazing catch! IT IS there but I never really notice! Now I have one more reason to enjoy this song.
i think its somewhere between ziggy and regular 2010's bowie since his voice aged he cant perfectly imitate himself from the 70's
Ziggy reappeared for a second when he sang "you're so natural"
His message to us all: "You are not alone. You are wonderful"
Forever grateful, forever in my heart. Love you David Bowie
this song is way too underrated
wanna see it in the charts?!...can be sure that no one who loves the music of David Bowie is underrating that song ;-)...
i couldn't have said that better my friend, lol
thumbs up!!!
Blame Simon
Not underrated.....could have easily went to number one on the charts. Keep in mind, in the early 1970's, song's glorifying suicide were more or less banned from mainstream American radio. Another example would be Bowie's song, Queen Bitch. The title and of course the song telling about a transvestite was NOT gonna be permitted on the mainstream radio. Yes, the KINKS's "Lola" got air play in the US, though some radio stations refused to air the song. "Five Years" is another obvious example.
I don't think there was any top 100 songs from The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders from Mars. Even though the album is considered one of the greatest albums of all times.
“oh no love you're not alone" I'M CRYING
Me too
same.
Same 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘 blessed be Bowie
🥹😭😭
“You’re watching yourself but you’re too unfair” Is one of my favorite lyrics ever because no matter what problems you go through no matter how bad they may be people often beat them selfs of over it way too much. “Man why couldn’t I have done that.”, “Why can’t I do this”, “why can’t I stop”. And most of these times the people who say these things are too unfair to themselves. People often beat themselves up from failure too much to the point where they can’t succeed. It’s such a good line and it just screams that when people are trying to take care of themselves and better themselves to not beat themselves up when stuff gets hard.
goodness- the part where he puts the guitar down and belts out "youre not alone!" is pure pure pure magic
David would have turned 75 today and this song will never stop hitting me hard
I have listened to this song so many times but this version is sublime. He brought tears to my eyes with this version. As many have said, David Bowie spoke to me as soon as I heard him around age 11 and has been a huge inspiration and mentor in my life. He is a total artist. The control he has as a performer is incredible. You can hear the influence in the song of Lou Reed to me- which brings back Weimar Republic cabaret and Berlin- he has layers of history and art in everything he does and is yet so warm- he loves us. And we will always love him.
1:38 you can hear an “early” Bowie voice, sounds great!
an astonishing performance from the heart, this is one of his greatest songs . Rip david
I am about to be made homeless and have several disabilities that make it difficult to find a new place. I have told several authorities that I am suicidal and none of them care. I have to come here to convince myself not to make an attempt. Thank you for posting this.
This is an excellent performance of this song, just fabulous. He's so charismatic it's crazy. But I just have to say - was there ever a more handsome guy- so elegant, those cheekbones MY GAWD! Sorry, I had to say it!!! And his eyes! sigh
It’s so beautiful to see in the comments how many people in the whole world were and are touched by the music of Bowie. Love and peace to you all from Germany.
at 2:51 when he does, "Ohhh", he does it fast but if you watch closely you will see what I am talking about, one of the little things about Bowie I love. God he was so gifted. Thank God we were all there for him to love. "All the knives seem to lacerate your pain, I've had my share, know I'll help you with your pain, you're not alone" , Cause you're not alone, give me your hands, cause you're not alone, cause you're wonderful, you're wonderful wonderful.............................."
R.i.p Bowie been your fan since i was 5 years old through my brothers r.i.p my big brother Richard osgood ozzie love you so much ❤ never 🙏 forgotten ❤ 🙏 💙 💔 broken hearted sister san 💔 😢 xxxxxxxx
What a fucking legend and voice! Just the greatest to ever be. Rest in Peace Starman
Truly a modern day Renaissance Man...we won't see the likes of Bowie come back thru anytime soon, God love ya David Bowie..
"You're not alone". David Bowie is alive in my heart!
Mine as well. Cannot accept he is gone. To alive to be gone.

This song kept me strong all those years ago, when I wanted to give up, played it over and over, thank you David for saving me , love you x
Apart from amazing talent, didn't he have fabulous hair ???!!!???

And sexy smile
always,
I know, on top of everything else - amazing hair! He could have won awards with it, haha!
he was a massive talent, in so many respects. i used to listen to the whole ziggy album every day during a rough period in my life.
Me too buddy. That period is now and it helps more than any medication or therapy session.
1990
Omg I start feeling like crap I listen this this I mean dropping his guitar on stage and screaming wow when he looks directly in the camera it feels like he is looking right at me I miss you so much David thank you for being you and because of you I'm not ashamed to be me it's also nice to see Ziggy at 1:38 love you and you are never gone because we will always remember you!!
Ángel rival fe
God bless you David.
Where ever you are.
Damn i love this max. energetic screaming-part starting from 1:45 and i died a little bit at 2:22, this pure power. I'm extremely fascinated by his rough voice. A great live performance. The only word that can possibly describe it to 10% is "Perfect" He was such an incredible man......and this 100 Billion$ smile. If you know he is waiting on the other side, there is something more that takes away the fear of death.
i wonder if he ever realised that by making this song in 1972, he’d be saving a random 13 year olds life 7/8 years after his death? this song is the reason i’m here, and i’m so glad i found bowie when i did.
this must be the best ever version of this song !!!!!,the master lives on .
I agree completely it’s so heartfelt it makes me cry

Thanks Bowie. I was in there. you are my Hero for ever. R.I.P.
Hello BOWIE, I will never forget you because you're unforgettable.
"I'll help you with the pain. You're not alone." This Song. Bowie heals.
This video is where I always go to when I'm losing hope
Waywardwind13
I'm losing hope now. This legend and his masterpiece helps but I think that I've already passed the Rubicon.
@@oscarwilde6649 Tonight, August 2019, this appeared in my recommended list. I watched it 3 times out of pure gratitude and awe...
Pulled me up enough to feed myself, and clear the dishes.
The die is cast, and there's nothing that shall change that. I hope you find comfort somehow. Keep on keepin' on...
Am just sorry no-one understood what you meant a year ago. I would very much like to hear back from you?
We can stand at the river together 😉
Same :( everytime, he calls to me 💗
Me also this is my go to video when I’m down love David Bowie so sad he’s gone he helped so many people in so many ways ❤
My fucking god. Incredible impact this theatrical masterpiece has...wow. YOU'RE NOT ALONE!
IK right. shit, gets me everytime I hear it, which is EVERYTIME I am on you tube.
There is nothing that compares to a Bowie concert!! Saw him before the Spiders from Mars and then the Aladin Sane time. A very gifted artist who surrounded himself with some of the very best musicians there ever was!
I was a teenager and I was at this place at this time. I was in the back of the second floor, far from the stage,
I remember screaming along with the people around me to this song.
I am glad I was exposed to his music as a teenager. I was taught many things by Bowie.
He taught me many things: that people can live freely, and to be tolerant of other cultures, and so on.
Japan to love Bowie, just as he loved Japan. Forever.
Best version! He sings, i believe!
Thanks Bowie, thank you friend. I'm not alone, you're wonderful!
Well now I know why I'm so sad today.
This is one of those songs that could save your life someday, and your sanity on a daily basis. Miss You Starman ⚡⭐🌠🌠👨🎤👨🎤
My heart is still all fubar (fucked up beyond all recognition) behind his death. (A military saying). But I really mean it as a metaphor, not literally of course. He is my fav artist. I grew up with him, danced to him, sang with him, lived & breathed him. He was my lyrics he was my world. Such an original cat. My God 5 1/2 years later and I still miss him this much.
You changed my life! R.I.P. David.
HE SAVED MINE XX
How?
he changed everybodys life mate.

I understand everything and I have said this on various youtube sites.
For example everyone seemed to help Turkey with the earthquake crisis (that's 700kms from me)
Silently absent from 🇺🇦.
This makes me think there's something else to all this.
However I'm not clever enough to understand skullduggery.
Here's something that confirms what you said about orcs also.
An observation.
1. Some are frightened.
2. Some are deluded a la "Victory will be ours"....why isn't he in the military then?
3. Some are leaving 🇷🇺
4. Some are ignorant about what the 🌏 thinks of them right now.
UA-cam.

OMG, he is so emotional singing this, he spits as he sings and drops his guitar! I just love this song. Esp. this version.
Bowie made the lives of many kids in the seventies and eighties easier knowing we were not alone and we had a leader.
1:47 Chills up and down my spine. He sings with so much passion and every word means something. Can you IMAGINE the music him and his old friend and rock god John Lennon are creating up on his planet
The first time I heard rock n roll suicide, listening to Ziggy stardust album for the first time I didn’t even like this song. But weeks later, after I fell in love with him and upon re-listens, it had become one my favorites. It is so raw and emotional
This is one of those songs that you don’t listen to often ‘cause when you do listen to it - you probably really need to hear it. Thank you Mr Bowie, this song has saved & inspired so many people.
