  • In this video, I showcase street photography taken on the streets of Edinburgh, including over 70 images, both the successes and the less successful shots.
A couple of weeks ago, I spent a day in Edinburgh with the sole purpose of wandering the streets and capturing spontaneous street photography. These days are my favourite-no set plans, just endless walking and discovering.
The day began with visits to a couple of art galleries. Art galleries are usually a great place to find interesting photo opportunities, with intriguing interactions between the art and the visitors. The lighting in galleries tends to be favourable as well.
After the gallery visits, I ventured out onto the streets with no specific agenda or style in mind. The allure of street photography lies in its unpredictability. My best advice for aspiring street photographers is to keenly observe your surroundings. Look for compelling characters, interactions, and interesting lighting. Another useful tip is to incorporate movement into your shots. You'll notice several attempts at capturing motion in this video. Holding your camera steady at slow shutter speeds is a challenge, but modern image stabilization greatly helps.
    Top Tip! - Over-shoot
When I'm out on the streets, I always tend to overshoot. If something seems promising, I capture it. It's better to discard extra shots than to regret missing an opportunity. In this video, I’ve included all the images I took-over 70-to provide insight for aspiring street photographers by showing both the good and the bad.
I hope you enjoy the video.

Some of these really made me smile - the little one on Dad's shoulders holding the umbrella and the guy behind the book were two of them! 🙂

Really enjoyed his video Gary and loved what you did with the slow shutter speeds. I remember many years ago doing some street stuff for a photographic certificate in a very different Edinburgh. Great work.

Hi Gary. I find a change of subject and pace are good ways to get the creative juices flowing. Not limiting myself with preconceived ideas of what I will photograph makes for a relaxing day of shooting. Enjoyed the video!

Impressive what you got in a few hours of street walk. I especially like the gentleman with reflective sunglasses holding an umbrella - class.
Though you got those two angry folks, maybe they won't like their photo shared online.

That's charming, bet you didn't expect to get the finger while photographing. I wonder if it was a tourist. Nice video, Edinburgh's a nice city for the weekend.

Cracking video Gary, I’ve never been to Edinburgh but always wanted to, even before I got into photography proper. After seeing this, and a couple of other videos over the last couple of years I definitely want to visit purely for photography.

Loved the stories your photos told Gary. The little girl in the art gallery looking at the weird head, I wondered if she had nightmare. I also like where the girls were being helped up the steps with a gentle push. I have to wonder though if we will still have the buskers and artists waiting for a few coins when we are cashless and there's no coins to give.

Thanks for the reply Gary. It’s interesting that you’re using a zoom for street photography. I tend to shoot with a 24, 35 or 50mm prime.
I didn’t say that your images were overly saturated, just a bit more saturated than I’m used to seeing unless I use something like Velvia.

    Really enjoyed this video Gary.
I mainly shoot landscape and a little wildlife, but just lately I’ve been doing quite a bit of street stuff and love it!
After 30 odd years of landscape photography, street photography has given me a new lease of life and got the adrenaline flowing again.

I take it there were happy for you to film and take photos in the gallery, thats amazing well done Scotland. Your very good at playing with your camera settings and making something happen. And your voice overs are great you sounds the same as when talking to the camera live... good day out inspired me to head to Manchester now..

You should have asked the little girl “What are your thoughts on this piece?” Or is talking to children something you don’t do? I’m a woman so find it easy to chat with children of all ages, but for men it might be different? Anyway, I’m always curious as to their take on the world.
Fabulous photos-the one of the miniature looks like it could be a real place-that you can step into-and the black and white with movement remind me of Alexey Titarenko’s photography.

The steps at fleshmarket close just outside Waverley station are much more characterful. As for the old town, you need to take yourself away from the tartan tat shops on the royal mile and explore all the little closes that lead off from the main thoroughfare. Surprised you didn’t visit the Grassmarket and the Vennel. Come back in August when the festival fringe is in full swing and bring Gareth Danks with you. Plenty street photography opportunities then.

Nice one Gary, the building with the curly roof is a new hotel and some locals refer to it as the turd 🙂. Calton Hill where you were up overlooking the city and across the Forth is one of my favourite places to visit as you can get some great images from up there.

Must admit I am not a fan of jaunty angle shots, unless it adds drama. Otherwise it makes the viewer feel off kilter for no particular reason. Jaunty angle photography is something I thought looked cool when I was a teenager; not now though. One of my mates loves his angles, and I’m just like “no mate”. Each to their own though. 👍📸
