For those asking about Ben Grimm being Jewish, that was apparently never explicit until 2002 (unless there were past references to it that I'm not aware of).
Semi-related question: what years was this event published in? I have vague, fuzzy memories of reading some of this in 1993-4.

Cheers, I was wondering about that exact thing.
On the topic of Ben Grimm, why is he wearing a helmet in this time period? Did the artist not feel like drawing his face?
“You said you wanted a cosmic cube. You never specified you wanted a functional one.” Admit that’s the biggest troll movie Thanos can pull.
That's the best part. All the world's cosmic schemers had the upper hand here. Moon Dragon would've been a perfect allegory if she was the villain and the more cosmic Goddess was a red herring. Adam Warlock being spooked by the idea of having to team up with Mephisto is also a good scene with the more religious heroes misinterpreting her word, Moon Dragon going to extremes that it scares even the Goddess and Eternity, forcing Thanos to step in. Would have made that bait and switch far more satisfying.
i really feel like David could point to five better examples of Thanos trolling. not saying the dummy cube isn’t a good troll, just unsure if it’s among his best pranks.

Genuinely surprised there wasn’t a “men going their own way” joke there; it’s a weird mindset that deserves mockery.
And Stephen Strange isn’t…even though his own tie-in issues show he knows The Goddess is a Grade A cunt. smh

I do think Mephisto getting outsmarted by such an obvious loophole to be hilarious and very fitting. For as much as he loves tricking others and making them miserable by abusing loopholes of his own, he's so *desperate* for a taste of real power and so convinced of his own infallibility that it makes him ever so vulnerable to getting outsmarted. I love that the Absorbing Man is swinging his wrecking ball while on his way to surrender peacefully.
IIRC, at the time, Absorbing Man's wrecking ball had gotten an upgrade so that it behaved a lot like Mjolnir, specifically, the ability to fly with it. I think that's what was going on.
A god who wants to bring order, a faction that wants to preserve free will and has a demon named Mephisto as a member, a momentary 4th wall break, and a Cosmic Egg.

I’m still kind of amazed that Adam warlock didn’t show up in the MCU until after Thanos was dead. The guy is kind of a huge part of the infinity events.
Would the firing of Gunn (no pun intended) have changed that? 🤷♂️
@@TimTE01Doubtful. I’ve read before that the Russos considered using Adam Warlock very early in the development stages for infinity war but decided against it. I actually think that was a good move on their part as the film would’ve been over stuffed if you had to focus on introducing not just Thanos but Adam too.
Reed: I’ll destroy you redemptress! With facts and logic!
Considering she took his wife hostage, I say go Reed go!
As a quick aside, it honestly makes me wish Clea, Doctor Strange's wife, was in this story.
Not only would she smack some sense into him, but she'd take one look at The Goddess and go full, "Oh no you don't! You're taking my man from me!", on her.
If we accept the logic that the magus and goddess are evil and good separated from warlock’s logic, we have to assume thanos is wrong. Adam warlock would *not* know how his logic-free good side would approach a problem.
Wait, does that make Adam, just morally gray? Or is this like when Timmy lost his emotions and Adam is now nonchalant and not feeling any particular way?
Thanos is wrong.

A similar scenario has occured in IDW Transformers 1 and IDW Sonic the Hedgehog. When Dr. Eggman teams up with Sonic and Sonic temporarily dons a villainous persona in The Phantom Rider, you begin to question everything.

Thank you for spreading the word on the ridiculousness of Madame McEvil. Old Iron Man comics got very silly sometimes...
Actually I can see Beast's point. Imagine a world that's government is completely fascistic and the people have just started their revolution, but because of this goddess now demanding and enforcing peace, that conflict halts and the atrocities of that government, while minimized continue. Which is why so many people in the real world can see Magneto's point, there is a breaking point where You can no longer ask for freedom or equality, You demand and fight for it.
I agree. It’s why I don’t like Doctor Strange being made a zombie for the entire event. Stephen is a healer before he’s anything else, and brainwashed or no, I feel at some point he’d start to wonder if what they’re doing is wrong?
Or maybe I’m right in assuming that he was starting to question it off panel… And moon dragon kept zapped his brain and making him suck Goddess cunt every time he did.
That's confusing evil with violence, though. The story may be doing that as well but the point is that while violence is necessary sometimes (lion's gotta eat something and antelopes won't serve themselves on a platter most times) evil as we understand it is not really a necessity. People and animals doing what they need to survive and not be crushed under the heel of tyranny (as in the example provided) is not an evil thing.
What Beast is saying is "have we considered that good is not in the universe's best interest?" which is not the same thing as saying violence may be necessary. He was maybe just playing devil's advocate, but he really may have wanted to phrase that differently or define his terms a bit.
Mind that depending on one's definition of "good" you could make a point that it's not really in the universe's best interest if taken to absolute conclusions. If "good" were to mean "ensuring that all living beings are well cared for and satisfied," then the resources needed to ensure that's achieved would ultimately be a net universal negative. It would be something like this as I see it:
All living beings need resources to survive > the good thing is to ensure all living beings have the resources they need > set up a system by which all living beings are provided with the resources they need using magic or the cosmic cubes (in-story) > more resources are being used > less stress is placed on the living beings to acquire resources themselves > with less stress comes higher proliferation of life as the population control mechanism of "don't have food to eat or feed my young" has been resolved > more stress is placed on the available resources in the world/universe > life will eventually outgrow available material resources until resources are insufficient to support the population > famine, disease, war and death pop up as a consequence. Good intentions leading to the eventual appearance of the four horsemen of the Apocalypse, and I'm not talking about En Sabah Nur.
It's a negative feedback loop that would eventually lead to more net suffering both to the world (or universe) and the population itself. Or at least you'd think, right? But that's all just speculative anyway.
And of course that implies the universe has an interest... or that it's finite and there aren't in fact enough resources to support all life, regardless of population size, before natural conditions become too severe to allow the physical possibility of living beings to even be a thing and heat death happens.
Pretty sure the cosmic cubes can just >make< more stuff out of thin air or something anyways. Beast is just being a dick for the lulz.
I find it funny how Mephisto got outsmarted by Thanos in the end. You would think especially how Mephisto, a being who desires deals with specifics in them gets blind sighted by a loophole of Thanos's design of getting a none functioning Cosmic Cube
Then again, Mephisto has lost against Squirrel Girl & Deadpool in making deals with those two MULTIPLE times. Also, Mephisto has been proven time & again to be so power hungry that it leads him to be stupid
@@thatonea-hole oh that's embarrassing on Mephisto's part lol
@SetoShadowVT
IKR. Literally, one of the deals he did with Deadpool came with getting his soul. Which he got, but that meant he was stuck with Deadpool annoying him for all eternity. So within like 2 days, Mephisto broke off that deal
Mephisto probably lumped in Thanos with Warlock and the rest of the heroes as "naive do-gooders" and thought Thanos, who stays true to his word, would honor the bargain.
The original sin is Pride, after all.
@@thatonea-hole Hilariously enough, this is like the 3rd character I've heard doing something like that.
I do agree that this does seem like a fun comic but I do have 2 major issues regarding the heroes thoughts on the Goddess.
1) While the Goddess does want to stop violence between people they never seem to wonder what other things the Goddess deems evil. I cannot imagine that the Marvel universe does not have characters who have morals most people would agree on while having a few that catapults them into being antagonists that need to be stopped or people will suffer.
2) The mind control not being considered a huge red flag as if the Goddess needs to mind control people into following her and seems to plan to do that to the entire universe you would think someone would ask "What if she is lying about being good and this is some scheme to rule the universe?" Seems like something that would be brought up. I do agree that the mind control stuff should have been kept secret for longer because that is a gigantic red flag.
Also I will forever find the concept of good not existing without evil frustrating because I feel that it downplays the good doctors, rescue workers, and others who do good in the face of accidents, nature, and other aspects of life that aren't inherently good or evil.
Fun Fact: This thumbnail for this infinity trilogy is the only one of this little trilogy to not have it's thumbnail to be drawn by DrCrafty the dude who used to draw the thumbnails before Viga took over. Glad to see this finally come out after half a decade of waiting.

@@louisduarte8763 That would’ve been preferable to what happened in this stupid event. At least Dane would’ve had a chance to get laid..
14:39 To be fair, The Goddess had already painted herself as a villain when she tried to kill Warlock, so by that point, there wasn’t really any point in hiding her villainy anymore.
I never liked the idea of Adam Warlock deliberately removing the good from himself. He has the power to remove the evil from himself, but thinks he's more worthy of power if he's not actually good, because... logic? Wouldn't that make him cold and amoral, or just catatonic? And then when he decides to share the gems, he doesn't first use omnipotence to take back his removed traits to prevent something like Infinity War? Or ask Infinity Watch for help doing that? And then it turns out that the good part of him is also evil? If the Goddess is evil, shouldn't Magus have been partly good? And Adam Warlock without capacity for good is more good than his evil good side? What does any of this even mean at this point?
Cue Val Kilmer saying "It just raises too many questions".
There is a quote by C.S. Lewis about the difference of cruelty between a robber baron and an omnipotent moral busy body.
From what I gathered it's less the Goddess is acting evil and more that she doesn't have logic that allows her to understand nuance. She sees that evil is basically as much a part of sapient beings good, so they all have to go. She doesn't have the ability to realize that doing that is a bad thing, since she's working with an incomplete brain.
Adam Warlock is kinda a dumbass
I guess but it’s trying to actually make more of a point than most event comic which just give up
0:31 I see Adam Warlock hasn’t played Persona.
Yes I know, the Persona games weren’t made yet when Infinity Crusade was first published, but with the time gem I doubt that’s an issue for him.
Which raises the question, what kind of Persona would Adam have?
@@keyblademasterclark Perhaps he'd have a gimmick where his Persona would switch between two forms during battle, sort of like how some fighting game characters could switch stances. Which would let him switch between Magus and Goddess.
Adam Warlock is the Maki of the Marvel universe.
@@waypastcute A Persona 1 reference, nice. And pretty accurate.
You can kinda tell Jim Starlin is having a bit of fun here with stuff like Roidy McGoo Silver Surfer and Thanos having a spaceship that's a giant Liefeld gun as well as a few other little bits and bobs here, and if you accept that he's kinda disengaged from all that (INFINITY GAUNTLET had nearly 3 years of build-up, INFINITY WAR just kinda happened because of "well, the first one made money and we decided to do another one" and built in CRUSADE as an additional payche--er, finale)
There's the germ of a good idea here, but Starlin's not really engaged enough to make it happen. It definitely feels like the least of the trilogy.

39:25 okay, I'll give it to Thanos, that is hilarious
So, in the end, we're back to war brewing on the border of Israel and Lebanon. Comics, such escapism!
I think at some point it should of been established the godess wasn't truely Adam's "good" side and Magus his "evil" side. When you look at how they defined evil in the last issue and the evil doppelganger characters that got created out of it, I think Magus and the Godess make more sense as Adam's Freudian 'Id' and his "Super-Ego'
The Id might seem evil because it follows base animal like selfish desire mindlessly, but without it we would be missing our passion and drive for doing much of anything. And the Super-ego might seem good because it cares about rules and laws, but left unchecked on its own you get a uncaring, unforgiving legalism no one lives up to the expectations of.
Which really does explain Adam at this point
It’s likely intentionally because Jim starlin cites Freud as a major inspiration for thanos

If you want a good event comic from Marvel might I suggest Annihilation Wave. It came out at the same time as Civil War but it's based around the scifi characters (Nova, Guardians of The Galaxy (kinda) and Silver Surfer to name a few) fighting for survival against a huge army determined to destroy the universe.
He does event comics by polls on his Pateron so you gotta vote for it :)
@@stevenhedge2850 I actually wouldn't recommend reviewing it unless he wants to do another long video because the thing about the Annihilation Wave comic is that you have to deal with several tie-ins in order to get the full idea of what's going on in the comic. I was thinking more along the lines of something to bring up if he ever did the first Civil War comic and to point out that if it wasn't for the efforts of the space heroes Earth would've been wiped out since the heroes were so busy fighting each other that they ignored a distress call from Nova warning them about the wave. There was actually a What If comic that brought this up and it's pretty good.
I finished Batman Caped Crusader last week, but it only occurred to me today that it takes place during the Great Depression... and absolutely none of the criminals or defendants we see are committing crimes out of desperation. WTF? You're going to tell me the Goddess pacifies starving parents so much that they won't steal food for their kids? Nonsense.
To play devil's advocate, perhaps whatever she's doing compelled the rich to do more to help the poor in order to prevent the people who would do that from needing to. Or maybe I'm thinking to much about this, and her extreme black and white view of the universe meant that she really did try to force people who have no other options to choose to starve rather than commit crimes.
@mikegates8993
Wow, letting people starve, truly the goddess is the embodiment of "GOOD." Although I feel like the Goddess got corrupted overtime and that's why she is the way she is
@@thatonea-hole Meh; ethics is a matter of doing what one has the best reasons to do; the idea of expelling "good" and "evil" is incoherent fantasy in the first place.
Doesn't the comic take place over the period of like a day or two? Loved the Avgn reference! Made me look up the jaguar episode.
Here's a bit of trivia: That reference, that Avgn episode is 13 years old....
Beast's quote on "how can we be sure 'good' is in the best interest of the universe" actually has plenty of merit. Good is a supremely vague and undefinable term, at least across both time and cultures. Millenia ago, "heroes" were defined as the biggest and strongest warriors and generals who could slaughter rival nations, and thus, protect their own. Some civs define individualism as 'good', while others believe in collectivism. And even then, "evil" can be just as meaningful and useful to advancement of civilization when it is seen as an identifier of systemic issues or the dissassembling of greater evil (i.e. piracy of anti-consumer goods, or revolution against dictators.) *And even beyond that,* the Goddess is clearly intent on stopping conflict in general, like the Kree/Skrull war. If that extrapolates out to *all* conflict, we now have a society unable to challenge ideas or compete to improve or be the best at anything. Stagnant order becomes the order of the day, just as bad for the universe as unceasing chaos would be under a being of pure evil (assuming a flipped dichotomy of order v chaos as 'good v evil.')
Short form, I don't think we want one dude's split personality defining how the universe is going to play out. Especially when they think they're right by default.

I found this channel a week or two ago, have watched a lot of videos already, and I subscribed only yesterday (though I've heard of AT4W before). Just wanted to say that because I just finished watching the 700th episode when this was recommended, and there was a lot of talk about AT4W being old and stagnant and perhaps having to change as the internet changes - in general it sounded a little bit pessimistic; a lot of talk about maintaining an audience instead of growing it.
I just wanted to say: I'm 22, I wasn't around on UA-cam when this channel started and I certainly won't get all of the running gags and the older storylines - but I read comics, these are good reviews and this is still something I would watch, even in 2024.
It is sad that they went very one-note with the Goddess. Like, there's a lot you can do with the idea that she is one particular guy's understanding of good, broken off from rational and selfish parts.
You can play off of her biased viewpoint, or even explore her lack of understanding of the motives of evil, using mind control because she takes for granted that everyone simply has 'a dark side' that makes them do bad things. That she sees 'evil' as just being 'magus'. Maybe even ask her if she still has any love or empathy for Magus and confronting that, if the answer is no, can she really be truly all good if she cannot even love her own self or show empathy for the needs of others that might drive them to act villainously.
A great review of a not terribly great comic.

One point of "to be fair" that comes to mind is that Magneto's methods are violent terrorism that kills people, while her methods are mind control that doesn't. I'd posit the lack of death could make a difference to those of more deontological mindsets (e.g. some might pull the trolley problem leaver if the track they're redirecting to doesn't kill but instead maybe severs an extremity or somesuch).
It's a bit concerning for Adam Warlock's mental state that his separated goodness came up with the same chain of logic as Judge Death!
