I wonder about some of the commets here. If you had played the games back when they came out, you would knew that X-Out is a couple of years older than Z-Out. X-Out suffered from serious slowdown if played on an A500; the game also froze quite often and you could not play no more - Z-Out on the other hand did not have these issues; the only real issue being the game slightly too difficult. By the way, totally differen programming teams. Apydia used the improved X-Engine. Still slowdrown probs.
“I was producer on this technology showcase. We decided to give the sound to future Factor 5 audio and video guru Rudolf Stember. He used Chris Huelsbeck’s brilliant TFMX sound tool but the title music for the game still eluded us. Then, early in 1990, Chris and I had been having nightly jamming sessions - Chris on the synth with me critiquing the results. Z-Out was eventually completed after a piece from those sessions fitted like a glove. We even had a nerve- wrecking switch of graphics artists in the middle of the game!” -- Julian Eggebrecht (Game designer, director and founder of Factor 5)
oh god i must be getting old. THE MEMORIES! i used to play this game with my father when i was about 3 years old. i remember this was a great game with great music
I never played X-Out, but I played Z-Out on my A500 back in the day. Had hours of fun, especially in multiplayer. It was an incredibly hard side-scrolling shooter. Do you remember the cheat? Press J+K simultaneously at the beginning of the first level for invulnerability!
It seems to be a R-TYPE horizontal clone with some background music and sounds from TURRICAN'S Amiga videogame...FANTASTIC! VERY MUCH...WOW! MYTHICAL...😉
I loved the music in this game when I found out it was Chris Huelsbeck who did the music THE Chris Huelsbeck from Turrican I said to myself: Ok... no wonder!
level 2 and 3 where broken on my copy of the game... but there was a trainer, so i could skip levels. never made it through the alien level though. those were the days!
Like most of the horizontal SHMUPs. In my oppinion there were too many R-Type clones out there that weren't adding anything new to the gameplay, but they were popular on the arcades and consoles, so gamemakers flooded Amiga with them too.
Ez a játék egy mai játékosnak lehetetlen küldetés!!A 4-es pálya zenéje fenomenális, csak e miatt is mindig eljutottam idáig,de beismerem hogy végigvinnem nem sikerült a játékot!
One of the best side-scrolling shooters in my opinion. Some of the art work was fantastic in Z-Out (especially the HR Giger influenced 2nd last level).
@AmiGamer I remember back in the day that there was an official cheat for Z-Out. If you press J and K on the keyboard at the start of level 1, it gave you invincibility.
Wow. It took me so long. I've finished this game right now on a real amiga. Thank you for this video. It helped at some difficult moments. I have to say, that I hate to play the last level without savestates. Why do you have to start the whole level again, if you die. Bad game design....
wow this seems anal in the extreme...for me these videos are about nostalgia and conjuring up old memories, not about someone being a computer game virtuoso or olympic champion...are you guys being serious or satirical?
Entertaining longplay, but saddly the game is pretty mediocre much like 70% of the amiga's library, which I'm really trying hard to like. The amiga is populated by knock-offs that really don't offer much of anything compared to the inspiration( like R-Type in this case). There are a few notable titles that I actually like for example Cannon Fodder, Turrican & Speedball, Hunter, Zeewolf & Virus but other than it's the biggest MEH ever.
You really need to expand your horizons and try more stuff. INCREDIBLE that you didn't mention Sensi Soccer/SWOS, for example (basically the best footy game ever). Other superb Amiga games: "Chaos Engine", "Datastorm", "Leander", "D-Generation", "Lemmings II", "Naughty Ones", "Flashback", "Second Samurai", "Populous II", "Ruff 'n' Tumble", "Slam Tilt", "Super Stardust", "Switchblade II", "Settlers", "Putty", "Apidya", "Crazy Cars III", "F1", "Dune II", and loads more. There are also some great arcade conversions ("Pac-Mania" and "Rodland" are both BETTER than the arcade originals) and tons of great PD stuff. "Llamatron" by Jeff Minter is incredible. So yeah, the biggest 'meh' ever, huh?
Jamie Williamson My horizons stretch far and wide friend, trust me. Those were mere examples of some of the games I enjoyed. Some of the examples you gave are questionable though. Sensi Soccer is good I will give you that. But Chaos Engine, Leander, Ruff 'n' Tumble, Switchblade 2 and Super Stardust are plain playable average-"ness". Dune 2 on the amiga was also inferior to PC original. The Settlers got ported and was better there also, Apidya was incredibly mediocre I don't know why you think that's a game worth mentioning. Really ? Llamatron ? Jeff minter is subjectively speaking the most awesome or pathetic individual in the game's industry. Flashback, sorry I'm not a big fan of linear trial and error gameplay, great style, lame game.
Hmm...your opinions on what constitutes 'average' are - as far as I'M concerned at least - without merit. Also, are you confusing "Flashback" with its prequel, "Another World"? Because NONE of the adjectives you used apply to "Flashback", but they definitely do to its prequel. In fairness, ALL opinions, including mine, are irrelevant. It's like arguing that red is a far superior colour to green. Either way, probably best not to pass off your personal opinions as quantifiable fact. Ah...the internet...
Oh DO please give examples of ANYTHING I said that was grandiose. Either that or buy a dictionary. Also, please feel free to keep trying to outwit me, it'll help build your character no end. (Hint: THAT wasn't an example of grandeur either, that was an example of patronising). Hey, I was happy to keep this civil and objective, I really was, but you clearly can't handle anyone disagreeing with you. If you're determined to act like a dick...
Oh mann, die guten alten Zeiten....
Lang lang ist es her...
Da kommen Erinnerungen hoch...
I love how the geiger-alien level's music is just wind and a creepy organ.
Wonderful memories of that time..... Everything was so easy and nice... Thanx for uploading 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Z-Out was one of the best side scrolling shooters back in the days of the Amiga. Great theme tune, too.
After 14-years 😁👍 Z-out is very dynamic. Shoot or die ... hahaha !
Exceptional R-Type clone. The Alien inspired level is just brilliant and that MUSIC!!!

great music, great rythm, let's rock....

oh god i must be getting old. THE MEMORIES! i used to play this game with my father when i was about 3 years old. i remember this was a great game with great music
I also just noticed, one of the sound-effects in here is also used in the game Yo Joe.
level 5 soundtrack. its everything

man, memories.. esp the underwater boss, just as i remeber....
I tend to agree with your comment about save-states, however bear in mind that z-out had full autofire built in. You simply press 'A' to enable it.
Not bad, as always great music on Amiga games.
@TheKidDoc81
I've read it too, but also can't believe it.
These games were to different.
Z-Out seems more like R-Type than X-Out with its shop system.
the working title for this game was "WARGATE"
It seems to be a R-TYPE horizontal clone with some background music and sounds from TURRICAN'S Amiga videogame...FANTASTIC! VERY MUCH...WOW! MYTHICAL...😉
@GrotesqueTactics
Was it? I don't remember any of that at all, however this still sticks in my mind.
28:43 How nice of "Skid Row" to crack the game back in 1990 and actually mentioning himself so everyone knows who removed the license.
I loved the music in this game
when I found out it was Chris Huelsbeck who did the music
THE Chris Huelsbeck from Turrican
I said to myself: Ok... no wonder!
level 2 and 3 where broken on my copy of the game... but there was a trainer, so i could skip levels.
never made it through the alien level though.
those were the days!
I think Level 5 was the hardest Level of all, i love this game, you make a great Job without a kill
There is a remake of Z-Out for windows called Last-Out. 5 levels out of 6 have already been remade...
And so far so good.
Great game! Takes a lot of inspiration from R-Type!
Like most of the horizontal SHMUPs. In my oppinion there were too many R-Type clones out there that weren't adding anything new to the gameplay, but they were popular on the arcades and consoles, so gamemakers flooded Amiga with them too.
Wow, what a game. They don't come like this anymore. I remember it being ROCK hard!!!! awesome!!
Ez a játék egy mai játékosnak lehetetlen küldetés!!A 4-es pálya zenéje fenomenális, csak e miatt is mindig eljutottam idáig,de beismerem hogy végigvinnem nem sikerült a játékot!
How comes the grafics from Z are worse than X ?
One of the best side-scrolling shooters in my opinion. Some of the art work was fantastic in Z-Out (especially the HR Giger influenced 2nd last level).
This game was well difficult - and still is...
0:18 cracked by Skid Row *ggg*
end title rocks!
thank you too match about this game's and all games of amiga & computers games
Is that music done by Hülsbeck?
Other games don't have a Chris Hülsbeck.
@AmiGamer I remember back in the day that there was an official cheat for Z-Out. If you press J and K on the keyboard at the start of level 1, it gave you invincibility.
oh, the music!
Was this the sequel to X out?
Hello younger self. Yes, this was indeed the sequel to X-Out.
is player invincible or what?
it's the same tune of the turrican 1 loading music
before it became x-out the game was called "wargate"...
Post rtype?
Great music, as one would expect from Chris Hülsbeck.
Who designed this games? I mean just look how easy is to defeat first boss,it's ridicilous, where are the bullets, excitement?
hoylshit that brought back memories
R-tape zx-speckki!!!!!!
the 5th level was the hardest!!
the sound is still the best of all games... ((-:

Loved this game... shame it was too bloody hard. Played the cracked version with level cheats
Also nice skills :D

Bla bla bla... it's one of the great amiga games!
13:50 you fly and fight with a German flag in the background!
Coincidence or an innuendo to the german developers?
Deutschland! :D
Rot, Gelb und Blau ist Romanien, nicht Deutschland ;)
@@neglesaks Er meint natürlich schwarz, rot und Gelb.. Das blau unten ist ja die Landschaft....

Everything is fine except bosses, they are too easy and too predictable!
😍👍😍😍😍😍

Very primitive for this computer

good shooter. Some parallax would have been great. I see some only in the last level
