What is your go to stand when setting up interviews?

I am just working pretty light. Photoflex medium light stand with a Godox VL300 light (not boomed) and either a 48-inch or 60-inch Glow Ez Lock Octabox. Then I usually just use a lightweight five-in-one reflector. My priority is booming a mic so I can boom my cardioid mics overhead.

They might not have all the flash, but I know UA-cam really is lacking on some of these videos. Since it is not the latest cool tech, it gets lost pretty quick. Thank you for always supporting the channel!

@@PDMokry check gaffer and gear. They open as fast as a turtle base. And the legs lock; a bit less secure since the lock is by screw and friction plate from the sliding leg but still strong. Then as you lift the leg, there is an actual locking mechanism inside.

Thanks brother! It would be perfect for that use. When looking at a single stand with nothing for scale online, it is hard to understand how it relates to other similar stands. I have more ideas cooking!

I have Norms C-Stands that I bought many years ago. I have some Matthews Cs as well, I like them too. I have three Matthews Beefy Babys that serve as my main light stands when lighting with smaller Aputures (120D-300D), but I also have two Medium roller three risers that I use when I need to put lights up higher. I have a Norms Three Riser Combo stand that I use for larger lights that have Junior Pins.
I have one American Beefy Baby (not sure what American calls it but it's the same size as the Matthews Beefy Baby) and I have to say, if I was starting from scratch today, I would buy all American steel. I'm in LA and when you talk with LA grips, they like Matthews but LOVE American, their stands tend to just be a bit more refined and rugged but they cost more.
If you are starting from scratch guys, buy American Grip. Grip gear will last your entire career, it goes forever so buy quality when you can.
A good tip with grip gear is to avoid Chinese stuff and Avenger is considered a bit second tier. Avenger makes some good stuff but overall, their fit, finish and refinement aren't as good as American, Norms, Modern and Matthews.
I just acquired two ETC Source Four Jrs and I broke my own rule and bought an Impact spreader arm to hold two or three Source Fours and Impact baby pin receivers and I have to say, I know Impact is Chinesium but it's pretty decent for the money and it cost 1/4 of the Matthews spreader bar and so far, it's working well holding up two ETC Source Four Jrs. I figured it only has one moving part, a tie down knob so how bad could it be? So far, it’s fine, although I personally wouldn’t buy Impact stands.

It is so crazy to think, but those stands you picked up 5 years + ago are worth more used than you paid new. Grip gear will last forever as a non rental.
Great insight on the American. I am Matthews because of the ability to buy in stock items via B&H in a pinch. But it is great to reach out direct, you can always get a deal.
Thanks again for taking the time to comment, it is very helpful.

Gotta admit, I'm kinda jealous you have so much gear that it actually _can_ get cluttered. 😄 Awesome insights, I'm very excited to see the next episodes since even though I'm a camera operator mainly, I do geek out on grip and lighting gear, whatever makes a beautiful image.

    Heya,
Love this little run through! I’m actually just looking to add a boom to my kit and not sure the D600 will be enough or if I should go for the D650.. purely based on the max payload of 15lbs / 7Kg of the D600 it would be enough but wondering what your real life use and experience says? Is the D600 at max extension and full load stable enough or is it better to stay a few LBS/KG under the max payload written on the box?

What budget are you working with? What light and diff are you using? The digital baby is great, but has a lot of weight to it. But the spread on the legs will make it way better than a c-stand

@@PDMokry are your gear rates posted online? I’m in Montana so not in your market. I want to be getting a 1 ton grip van and offering grip+1ton+lighting add ons. It’s so practical and it’s also really fun, but the key is adding value to the client with a well organized and well stocked van with the experience to put it to good use.
