Oil Painting Tutorial - How to Paint Realistic Bird Eyes

  • This video demonstrates one way to paint owl eyes using Winsor & Newton Artisan Water Mixable Oil Paint. Since this painting, I've gone back to using traditional oils. If you are using traditional oil paints, the same ideas and techniques would apply.
    Many painters prefer to start with what’s in the background or furthest away and come forward. I have a different approach; I like to start with the most intense part of the painting first and work my way out from there. Painting this way ensures the viewer’s focus goes to the eyes because everything else has been built up in a complementary way around them.
    The total painting time shown here is about 4.5 hours. Between the two eyes, it’s about 9 hours of painting.

    Timestamps:
    0:09 - smooth canvas texture with extra gesso
    0:23 - oil paint colors used
    0:54 - add blue to deepen the blacks of pupils
    0:57 - painting start
    1:15 - outline the edges of the iris with red then fill in with orange
    2:05 - add black around the irises to "ground" the eye in the face
    2:21 - add grey around the black to add dimension
    2:43 - add black to the irises to tone down the colors and create shadows
    3:06 - add white highlights to create reflections
    3:13 - add blue around the highlights to make them pop
    3:26 - once all of the colors are laid down, add extra details to create even more dimension and shape
    3:46 - add burnt sienna around pupils
    4:36 - let first layer dry
    4:42 - second layer start - refine with subtle details
    5:10 - second layer finished

    What do you use to trace or sketch the owl it’s so well-defined,I just absolutely love your techniques thank you so much for sharing your work with us it is so appreciated

      Hi Cathy, for this painting I used carbon paper to transfer the main outlines.
