I pray for a United Ireland one day and for all the souls that lost there life in this war on the Irish. 🇮🇪
They did they just made more enemies. It was completely unnecessary conflict. The only thing they had to do was keep the peace. The nationalists treated them well and welcomed them. It’s when they started helping loyalist mobs burn down nationalist homes, the welcome mat was taken away. Besides if Bloody Sunday was a recruitment tool for the provos can you imagine wide spread killing of Irish civies on a huge scale would have had the Irish people on mass enlisting either in the provos or the Irish army, all intelligence from the republic would have been stopped and it’s very likely the public outcry would have resulted into an even more brutal ground war and made things thousands of times worse than they were.
Such as the indiscriminate murdering of people like the Black and Tans did in the early 1920's ? That did nothing either to endure British victory or enhance the reputation of Britain. Get a satellite photo . Separate countries. Any dimwit can deduce that.
Miles Coleman - first of all the ira weren't a people's army, they were terrorists which most catholic men did not join with and secondly, the IRA surrendered their weapons and Northern Ireland remains British territory and now the republican cause is dead with only 20% of residents in Northern Ireland supporting a United Ireland even the majority of catholics want to remain British, LOL we well and truly smashed the IRA, god save the Queen!
If you want to know what happened when the IRA actually fought their opponents head on, look no further than the story of Corporal Eric Glass - one part time middle aged UDR soldier armed only with a pistol beat back four Provos with automatic assault rifles, killing one, whilst heavily injured from their gunfire.
it was never the objective of the British to defeat the IRA though, they only meant to suppress their violence to an acceptable level and allow a political solution to emerge. Mission accomplished. The IRA spoke of having forced a stalemate in their propaganda but they had taken their armed campaign as far as they could and they knew it.
By the mid-1990s the Provisional IRA was having every good operation in Belfast compromised by informers and the UVF's war of attrition against them in rural Ulster was grinding them down further. No wonder they sued for peace. It's 2017 and Northern Ireland remains British. More than a few blades of grass I'd say...

Love the use of the word 'terrorist' . An occupying force whom are unwanted and undoubtedly sectarian, invade and then decide to call any form of resistance, may it be physical or political, 'terrorists'
A terrorist literally means someone who uses violence (typically against civilians) to achieve a political goal via intimidation. In all three of those areas the PIRA checks out as a terrorist group, not to mention the number of civilians they killed was several times higher than the British army, even with collusion estimates

The Scottish pretty much pushed the Irish around. I’m English living in Northern Ireland. You can hear that droning Scottish/Irish accent. People in Donegal are much better people.
@ Mathew Mathews. Exactly , the planters were for the best part a criminal class, cattle and sheep rustlers many of whom could not speak English in a way that someone in let’s say London would recognize they were viewed as undesirables and sending them to Ireland was seen as killing two birds with the one stone, removing a criminal class population and giving them a landlord status in return ,cooperation in subjugating the natives and if you study them I’m confident you will agree that evolution has passed them by.
So you invite yourself to Northern Ireland....complain about all the people there...and are now thinking of inviting yourself to the republic. You are a wanker....a total wanker.

Only when one of the regiment listened to the Wearside Jack , bogus Yorkshire ripper tape , he was convinced it sounded like Hathaway, undeniably a Psychopath ,who he'd been on tour with , he went to the cops in Glasgow , probably looking a reward and was physically thrown out of two separate stations. Only for a Savvy journalist at a Glasgow newspaper it would , like so many hundreds of others, have ended at that. It seems at the beginning of the tour the entire platoon were shown Naans photo and details and that he was to be treated, appropriately, having earlier been involved in the civil rights movement. It went higher than Snowball of course but he was offered a non custodial, with pension in tact no doubt. If you look closely at these individuals you can tell the half of them are unhinged.

If the government had have allowed the army to actually fight back this war would have ended a lot faster.

The British army at its best. Doing a thankless job surrounded by an invisible enemy who never dared to confront them one on one.

A terrorist literally means someone who uses violence (typically against civilians) to achieve a political goal via intimidation. In all three of those areas the PIRA checks out as a terrorist group, not to mention the number of civilians they killed was several times higher than the British army, even with collusion estimates
The amount of money and resources the UK government put into this operation is simply astonishing.

As I recall the South Armagh tour was alternating rifle coys between rural patrolling from BBK via Lynx (were we mortared there as my brick were taking off in a Lynx). I saw lads hit and fall but soon we were gone down to the border to dropped off. Then there was time in the Golf towers. Finally patrolling XMG.
