How to Plant and Grow Musa basjoo - Hardy or Japanese Banana

  • The hardy Japanese banana is arguably the toughest of all banana plants and is super-easy to grow here in the UK. With roots cold tolerant to -15 degrees Celsius it is as strong as they come and they require next to no maintenance other that watering during periods of drought.

    Our Musa does very well,it's not that old but it's looking really strong,we are located not far from the North Cornish coast and the Musa is in a sheltered spot,enjoying your videos.

    Hi I have a musa plant 15cm a baby, can I plant outside and if so when is best to? I am south east England :)

      It depends on the species of which there are many. I would only plant out Musa basjoo and only once it as been hardened off for a week to 10 days. Simon 🙂

    Thanks for the vid as always, I’ve got a plug plant, would you leave in ground in first winter or put in unheated green house? (In south west uk)

      Hi Yosef, assuming it's musa basjoo and it gets to a decent size over the summer I would probably leave it outside. I haven't had a problem with these, and you will probably have milder weather than us. Kind regards Simon
