Swathing? 🤔

- ** Mike as finally arrived back up north where Ashtyn has been swathing. She is swathing down our canola up there because if not, the canola will shell out due to the variety that we grew. Swathing is another tool that can be used for "pre harvest" management. And as you can see, she loves it! 🙂

Mike, don't be sorry for the noise outside the cab. It comes through as music to me. Love the sound of a diesel running and fans blowing and pumps whining and hydraulics.
Mike your Greatest Asset is your Ashtyn, please be careful for her, it wont belong Ashtyn will give Birth to your first Child , I think its a Boy, Bless you both, try to be not so naughty , I know its hard for you, keep your Eye on your Ashtyn she will need you more soon, Great video, I never saw the Swathing before so its a first for us also, Cheers & Best Wishes , Trevor.W.Bacelli. Very Very nice 👌 video learned a lot, I am from South Africa in this part of the world we plant canola in the Overberg area. I am from the Free State and here we plant mostly corn 🌽and oats. Mike keep up the great videos 📹 and have a nice day.
Mike I like it up there better you got trees and it's nice and green 😀

I used to love swathing, then we switched over to straight cutting canola. And i can confirm swathing in the rain, as long as it didn't rain too hard. I once swathed canola in a thunderstorm, was epic. Still miss that job.

I remember back in the 80s and 90s swathing canola in the rain. Could never swath cereals in the rain but with canola it works good. Canola cuts like butter wet or dry and you can actually go faster when raining/wet because it isn't as puffy and flows through the swather opening much better. I've never seen anyone swath canola without a roller though.

It's more like a vacuum cleaner.
I love swathing too. We actually swath some of our straight cut liberty Canola as well just so we can get combining quicker.
Watching the swather reel through the window is almost hypnotic.
Now I need a Mike video on the difference between straight and swatch cutting.
Straight cutting is cutting it off the field with the combine. Swathing is cutting it with the swather then picking it up with the combine
Mike buddy, you remind me of myself as a child so excited to run around the field chasing after the machines videoing or even just to watch them go round and round
I love it, Mike!! These videos of yours sure are awesome!!!
Seeing Ashtyn pregnant makes me feel so happy for you Mike. I can see her not stopping until she pops and even then she’ll be doing nappy changes in the cab whilst seeding next spring 🤣

Guess Ashtyns mood was as good as the yield when she got out of the cabine...we all know that
Good to see Ashtyn being active in the Canola, making her own sound choices. Love that.👌👍🌱🚜🍀
the girl can drive a swather !!!! // pickup looks like a Saskatchewan pickup after a rain
AWESOME VIDEO!!!! I been waiting for a swathing video, can’t wait for the combine with the pick up header

There is one major advantage to swathing I suppose, especially a crop like that with a fair bit of weeds in it.
And that would be that the weeds also dry out in the swath as the canola ripens, and goes through the combine easier and…
I love your videos mike keep it up the good work 👏 👍

Ashtyn right at home in a Case!
Excellent video Mike I've never seen that being done close up. Good to see the wife hard at work on it too. She was driving that big Case like a Pro.
Now we know why Mike isn't on the stuck list, no sense of adventure or daring
Never seen a swather in action before. Mostly row crop here in Deep South Ontario but the few cereal acres are all straight cut
Jeez that is too green! We Spray under the swather in Australia as those weeds will set seed before you can spray after harvest.

Anxious to see if your Northern Operation may someday grow to be be Ashtyn and your home base.

Rolling a short crop like that won't do much...my canola is the same way. I have seen the odd time that rolled canola blew away worse than unrolled canola

Case, i guess she's not gona break any time soon..haha
i don't miss swathing.. combine all day and swath all night is for chumps.. now we don't have to worry every time it starts blowing over 50k whether our swaths are blowing.. straight cut yeilds better as well
I just visited your website Mike. It says: "Mike is of the Mitchell fourth generation. He farms along side his two brothers, parents & their families."
Where's Ashtyn? Time to do an update ;-)
“& Their families”
I am guessing the "& their families" unless you don't think she counts as Mike's family 😉
I've seen it asked many times. Mike why don't you have a drone? He is his own drone folks :)
You should look into some high mileage all terrains for your truck. It’d make a world of difference on those dirt roads especially after a rain.
We always did 3 rounds around before going lengthwise on our family farm
Love the videos Mike good job. Did you get stuck???

Having to cut so low hope you can get off before a big wind comes up and blows across field. God knows it never blows in Sask. lol Enjoy you videos.
You certainly don’t need HAMMY to pick up the sound of the rain beating on your windshield.
Where was this moisture earlier in the season when actually needed ?
😂💦💦🎤💦💦🤣
hmmm...if you think your going to pickup those swaths with the pickup header for the Ideal, think again lol
I know you have to wait for the swath to dry out and to compact it with a roller before it can enter the combine, we never swath anything except for grass on our farm
Holy canoly !
Epic screenshot
7:50 are we just not gonna talk about how speedy mike is?

Well Mike rain on those swather tracks make combining a nice adventure. For tracktion its good there is some stubble left to float on. Buy a bag of dry weather at de grocery store my grand parents woud say.See the video s comming Mike.Nice demo swather with 4 driven wheels is a good opportunity to learn the job? Just saying...Oh and that Alexa lady has some sticky fingers on the F5 button
looks like they got over twice the amount of rain in Wishart than we got here
i have seen a lot of this crop swath down and guys will have a roller behind them to kinda push down the swath in to the stubble to hold the crop from blowing away
Swathing was always my 3rd favorite job in the fields an international 4000 with a 12 foot head
Mike,
life long Palouse Wa. Farmer told me, (after hearing grips about rain) "if it rains enough to grow weeds... you can afford to kill'em ".
That excludes sprouting and spoiling crops?
Speaking from experience if you don't bite the bullet and make it a point to get back into shape you'll be this way for the rest of your life. Harsh but it is what it is.
So is the Game Plan for you and Ashton to move up north and start your own branch of FHF? Just seems like a lot of extremely long commutes while you establish yourselves there. I can’t imagine the toll that takes on both yourselves and the equipment to run a few thousand acres that far away from home base.
Hello Mike case 🌧️☔😢😬🤞🇮🇹
Ashtyn's brother seems like a really nice person.
They all are yes 🙂
@@mikemitchell2554 tell him to grab his swather, hes pulled.

Hey mike how ya going again love the content
Excellent 👍
Pulls like a dead yak! 🤪😂
I've got a question Mike ... how long will the crops stay on the ground before being harvested ...
I've got another question Mike ( sorry , I'm curious ) ... this year, crops were small ... this year, rain was tiny ... why not using stripper heads in front of the combine ( not talking about canola )
... it would allow to keep snow in the fields ...
For your first question the canola usually sits between 1 and 2 weeks
Swathing? Looks like combining, mixed with hay cutting
Mike, what’s your “go to” for Canada thistle? I hit it spring, summer, fall, can’t make headway on my patches
Mike, are you possibly dealing with some RR resistant weeds up there?
The canola stems should dry and rot down nice with the moisture trapped inside the swath , knock down on greens also
Get you some Rain-X on that windshield!
Why would you cut the green stuff that isn't ripe yet instead of the brown stuff that is borderline too ripe? Won't that just delay it and cause even more loss?
Ya need to get a big 'ol Wishek disc, hook it behind that big Deere and knock those weeds in the head with good old steel. Nothing will escape a good discing.

except the billions of seeds you bury. which will germinate when conditions suit them. often many tears later. Did you ever wonder why so much chemical was used for many tears before continuous cropping became normal? My grandfathers plowed and disced everything. My father's generation onewayed and cultivated everything black evert other year. Weeds thrived!
Best tillage tool out there is a sprayer. Put the tillage tool in the bush… time to join the 80s
In Dakota we run rollers on our canola when we swath it. Wonder why not up there.
Most farms do in Sask also. Hope they don’t get a big wind….
I was thinking the same why no roller hopefully wind stays under 30 km lol (never happens) I absolutely hate combining swaths vs straight cut combine productivity goes down around 50% picking up swaths but swathing is a necessary evil for harvest timing reasons on our farm as well.
@@chadkubashek4622 why 50%down ? I have been told that picking up swaths is actually faster.
@@techHmrk not in irrigated canola (heavy swaths) just doesn’t feed as smooth depending on conditions max speed is 4mph no matter what try any faster you will jam solid
A swather is not a Mike-thing. There is only one place to hang on to outside. And he is not allowed inside behind the wheel. 😜😜😜
08:12 haha , piece of land definitely needs some tlc.
I've finally found out what conola is . In the UK we call it oil seed rape 😀😃😀😃😄
It's hard to believe you and Ashtyn can be so cheerful with poor crops and the conditions you are working in. It just amazes me how you farmers can keep operating with such large losses. I hope you get insurance or government help to stay solvent. Good Luck
When crops are good, just think how good, good can be.

We also use Invigor canola back home and spray Liberty on it too.. This is my first yesr with Nexara.. Not sure I like it, 😂 but I like trying things

You will clean the farm up 👍
U get every penny outa a machine if u can run 24/7 👍
in the uk we call it rape not canola, the pigeons love it in winter so gives up a nice lot of shooting.and we spray it to harden it off, not swath it,
Nice video
You need Ol Nick and Antoine from South Saskatchewan Farmer to bring the old gear over Swathers, Ol Sassy Massey n Deeres, and the pull behind Combines.I like old school equipment still does what it needs to for them, its waaaay undersized for your operation but man they'd look good doing it.
Mike the Dare Davil: climbing a piece of equipment running at 15 miles per hours on a muddy terrain while Ashton minding her own business 😁
So I’m confused seen your vids before so do you own this farm/equipment or just an operater?
Mike farms under Faith Hope Farms. The videos you see are a collection of his two brothers, his parents and his own farms and equipment. His wife also comes from a farm family and you see her parents farm occasionally. I would guess the swather they're using in this video is her parents as Mike stated he doesn't typically swath and they are in her parents area. The farm your seeing swathed is a newer piece of land acquired by Mike.
My uncle lives in swift current about 3 years.and I from south Africa 🇿🇦
you want to roll your canola swath next time Mike
Hey Mike........Do you have the JD 9620R 640 HP Cummings Engine yet.............You do go for lots of HP.........and complain where there isn't enough. Well, there ya go. If I were you, I'd let Ashtyn do the demo. It's better if someone knows what their doing do things like that. Oh.......I wouldn't mess with her, pregnancy gives them special mood swings. One min. they are happy and smiling, next min. your laying on the ground. I have 3 kids..........I know what I'm talking about.
As per usual it rains at harvest well at least it rains though.
Think that was the old One Earth bin set up on 35 highway in the opening scene but I could be wrong.

Mike, what’s the crazy stopwatchy thing on the back of that machine. It does one rotation every 5 Seconds??
It’s a rotary screen in front of the radiator. The skinny thing is a brush to move the dust and debris out of the way so the air can move through
Mike, at 13:46 you got pretty far ahead of the swather quickly, did you sprint or did she slow or stop so you could get the shot? Be honest now lol :)
I sprinted and nearly died... 😂🤏
