MTV was really promoting REM at the time and were going to a big thing. They filmed their concert at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb because it was supposed to be similar to Athens, Georgia. The concert was never aired but it is on UA-cam. This interview was taped the day before and a piece of it was broadcast that night. I was working on stage crew for the concert and Mike Mills walked by. I said, “I saw you on MTV last night.” He said, “Did it suck?” I said, “No, it was cool” and he said, “Thanks!”
Btw this interview’s full of jokes/lies. I read an interview in which Stipe admitted there was no German socialist named Anhan Detringer and the ‘Fall On Me’ video was filmed in a New York quarry rather than a miniature set built by the band (can’t remember the interview but if I find it I’ll edit this). On the Broken Record podcast with Rick Rubin he said he filmed the video with a guy he had a huge crush on - so the interviewer was right that he did it with an artist. I should’ve realised he was joking when he said Paul Klee was a childhood friend who designed his shirt. I just thought that was Stipe’s abstract way of saying the Bauhaus inspired him as a kid (since he does likes Bauhaus). I’m feeling a bit stupid now.
Yeah, I went back to the video after I saw this and was like "that's not a miniature set ... WTF is he talking about?" I wonder why he was BSing so hard here. Or maybe he just lives in a world where he invents reality minute by minute?
@@keppela1 I think he liked messing with the press - putting out ridiculous stories just to see if they’d print it without question. In the Observer TV interview from 1984 (the one where they’re sitting outside St Mary’s church) he acknowledges that he started a rumour about himself that he was leaving REM to raise monkeys in Tibet. I’m pretty sure Andy Warhol did a similar thing so that he could track how rumours spread from magazines (e.g. one interviewer would quote a strange rumour and Warhol could then tell what they’d read).
@@eddiejames4006 Yeah, I guess this just bothered me a little bcz I really love the song and was interested in hearing some origin info. Michael's very good at deflecting those kinds of inquiries though.
Amazing. R.E.M. keeps me alive at the moment.
I adore his voice not only when he sings but also when he talks ❤❤❤

That's the playhouse at the Ellwood House, a historic home in DeKalb - this is so cool!
Michael looked so accidentally cool during that late 80s hobo poet phase. Really endearing interview

I used to love Michael's thrift shop clothing style.

So no one is going to mention how a bird poops on his jacket at 0:51?
Looks like it might have been a leaf or something.
"My girlfriend..." Awww, Michael. He was such a cutie.

Why would someone not approve of laundry detergent?
Because their EXTREMELY weird.
But approve of toxic chemical waste in dry cleaning.
@@jude999 I'm assume he was referring to the toxic stuff when he said he asked them not to use it.
What was the Peter Gabriel news that we missed?
Probably something to do with his album So, which came out that same year
Now Michael, complete sentences lol
Dr. Martens were never cheap
I remember meeting Michael around this time. Nice guy but he stunk, like B.O., piss, and dirty clothes stink.
Rarely bathed.
