Star Wars Episode III Lightsaber Stunts

- A behind the scenes look at what went into the lightsaber stunts and choreography in Star Wars Episode III. Edited together with mostly-edited footage from the Revenge Of The Sith DVD featurettes. I don't own this stuff.
This is a great edit. It's frustrating that many people can't praise the content without bashing the new films. Like, this is how it used to be with annoying Original Trilogy fans. Legit couldn't go into a comment section for anything 'Star Wars' without having to read a bunch of people moaning and groaning about the prequels. "They ruined Star Wars", "Bad writing", "Plot holes", Terrible acting", "They fundamentally failed to capture what Star Wars is all about", yadda yadda etc., same stuff. Regardless of the specific opinions, can we not be a little better than the last generation of peeved fans that didn't get what they wanted for whatever reason? Geez, there really is no escape...
👏👏👏👏 well said.
I agree. Like yeah, we get it folks, you hate Disney. Wah wah wah. Could be A LOT worse. Star Wars is like a toy store, everyone comes out with different things in their bags, but no need to go crazy and treat it like Black Friday.
"But it's MY Star Wars!"
"No it's MINNNE!"
Like stfu already. This is the reason new fans don't want to get into Star Wars, because any other fan with different opinions lack the intelligence to give a proper response other than "fuck you" or flat out whining. Just let the fans enjoy what they want.
George Lucas told a story that many fans loved but there’s always gonna be haters who put words in other people’s heads😕
@@seancorrigan7458 yep, as with any artist unfortunately.
The prequels aren't great but compared to the original trilogy it isn't that much worse.
Makes me appreciate Ewan and Hayden for spending their time to train for this.
Mr Lakiro I seen footage where Hayden had to spend a month and a half doing bench press and squat 3x a week along with 2 mile mile runs every other day and training with taekwondo weapon combat, fencing training and kendo with it, ewan also did some working out but I couldn’t find footage on it
Mr Lakiro People forget that physicality is a huge part of acting in action films, and in that regard they were all splendid in the prequels.
Hayden did an amazing job, people forget they were George's lines. Hayden was awesome in Ep 3
Man it feels weird cause my name is Hayden lol
Lick Mike Hunt all of that just to have good abs when waking up from that padne nightmare
It just makes their dual so much cooler knowing the actors are actually doing it and are actually that fast and skilled
SHAZAM DC like every film made now
@Ultimate Spider-Man the green screen is fine
this is BLUE screen, colourblind?
Legit made me hype af when I saw it In theaters on my 6th birthday and my mom and my older sister had an argument whether it was real fighting or not. 😂 that was so long ago but now that I know it’s all real I wanna go back in time and tell em it’s real. 😂
Ultimate Spider-Man well u think there going to actually go to a place what is made up
The fact that Hayden and Ewan are casually living their lives with irl Jedi lightsaber fighting skills is crazy
Same
LOL
Lmao
I was thinking that😂 these two better get some more damn sword fighting roles.
Well the moves were 100% scripted, it's not like they can improvise that or anything close...
You may never see a more perfect lightsaber duel in the Star Wars franchise again
True
Rise of skywalker had a better fight

They really really cared about this movie. I admit to being dismissive of the prequels but Revenge Of The Sith was flat out awesome. Hayden got to show off his acting chops for real and the fact that they spent months mastering one of the most important fight scenes in the entire franchise shows how much they loved what they were working on.
"This is where the fun begin" ha great acting
Jav0712 Gaming yes it is
Jav0712 Gaming yes exactly
Theodor Martin ?
Jack Theflash yes it is great acting
Hayden - My character is meant to be the chosen one and is supposed to be one of the better Jedi as far as fighting goes.
Says everything about his humble personality. This is the best lightsaber duel in all of Star Wars. I wish George, Hayden and Ewan could give us more magical moments from a galaxy far far away.
Me too pal, me too :(
@@michaelstark8720 unfortnuantly the backlash from the prequels was so bad that wont ever be happening again. Now as time has progressed peoples impossibly high expectations for the movie and OG nostalgia has died down and people know their good movies, it's still to late. It really sucks.
@@shsltrash820 yeah wasn't that the reason George sold it to disney because of the backlash from the prequels
PLEEAAASE god let Hayden feature in a flashback or something in the Kenobi series
Edit: 😭it was amazing 😭
I'd die. Die happy, but still dead.
YES!!!
Ooh if that happened it'd be so cool if they try to redo the fight just for fun. Like see if they still has it in them T3T
PLEASE
They should have them both for a few episodes. Would love to see them both on screen again. This movie was near perfect in my eyes
The way Ian goes "out of his way" to acknowledge just how talented Ewan and Hayden are is always one of my favorite moments from this featurette. Because it really cant be overstated how absolutely lucky we were to get those two men in the roles they played. They were perfect. Theyre living legends.
Say what you want about the overall quality of the prequels but no one can deny how hard those two worked and how well they fought.
Stop saying "Say what you will about the Prequels" every time you praise them. It's obnoxious.
@@VinVonVoom Say what you want about the prequels but the fighting and music were awesome.
you're saying that like the prequels were bad. the originals are better than the new ones.
I wholeheartedly believe that it is absolutely incredible how Hayden and Ewen did all the stunts themselves that fast. That level of commitment is just phenomenal
Ma Arthur morgan how you doing BOAH!!
Hayden and Ewan pulled off the longest on screen sword fight in cinematic history.
I really do hope that this changes people’s mind about Hayden. Yeah this came out years ago but the level of work they put into this. Hayden just did as the director and writer George Lucas told him to.
Mae exactly
Regardless of what anyone thought about the movies, that poor young man did not deserve anything close to the level of slavering hatred people attacked him with.
He’s a great guy, played a good Anakin, and I can’t wait to see him in Ahsoka’s series.
Who here misses the good ol' lightsaber duels
omg is the cameraman really driving around in a wheelchair? I am wheezing
Same I went back to make sure I saw it correctly.
Gives smooth camera movement, its gets rid of camera shake... Also they use little like trains with a track and a cart, it just rolls to shoot from too.
That was for testing, not the real shotting
@@rodrigomartinez282 Now a day there are proffesional shoots that use wheelchairs as dollys.
They see me rollin', they hatin'
I like how they’re doing their stunt work in jeans, absolute legends
Now I see why the lightsaber fights in the newer movies have been so bad.. I mean look at the practice and dedication these actors have. This is what made the prequel trilogy really stand out in my eyes. Regardless of the writing and the dialog you have to admit that revenge of the sith has THE BEST lightsaber fights of all time. We need more Star Wars content with people dedicated to creating awesome lightsaber fights. It really makes a difference.
General Grievous at 3:57: *Sweating profusely*
Holy sh*t I tought some stunt doubles did the light saber fights, this just makes it way better than it already is🤯
And that's the reason why I watched this movie so often as a child/teenager
They spent MONTHS rehearsing the Lightsaber fights for the Prequels. The acting for most of the prequels may not have been well-liked (I personally don't find anything wrong with the infamous "I hate sand" dialogue), but the fights have a lot of heart and dedication. The Sequel trilogy has no heart or soul when it comes to the story or the fights.
@Ryan WHITE no, it's coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere
Why is Hayden Christensen’s voice so soothing?
Cause anakin voice is soothing
Treesod! He eats sand
He gargles sand.
He ate chew
it's not coarse or irritating...it's soft, and smooth
There was an interview with Natalie Portman (Padme) who watched a rehearsal of them doing the big fight scene & she said she was blown away at how fast they were doing it. Ewan had said in another interview that once they got the fight sequence down, both he & Hayden decided to do the battle as fast as they could. Obviously, you see this in the movie.
I love how dedicated everyone one of those lightsaber duels in the prequels were. Especially with Hayden Christensen, lightsaber combat in those movies was like second nature that guy he really was dedicated to his craft.
This is still better than the newer star wars. So much fighting with lightsaber. Good plot and arch story
Makes Rey and kylo look like idiots
InsideLine PH They already are idiots
Yes they are
Every jedi that would have known how to fight like this died except for ashoka so who would have thought them to fight like that? I get you don't like the movie and that's ok but could you try and be a bit less stupid when you get mad about it, thanks 😊

Never thought that wheelchairs were used for action scenes, but it makes sense. Running along side the actors would cause a lot of movement, especially with a heavy camera. Shoot the scene in a wheelchair, however, and it is relatively smoother. Just as long as you have a flat surface.
this >>>> the last jedi throne room fight
Both are amazing but obviously Ep.III fight is so much better
Not so sure. I didn’t feel the throne room fight went too long. The only thing I’d have changed about it is, I’d have sped it up to 109%. That trick comes from kung-fu movies, where they’d film at 22 FPS and play it back at 24 FPS, making the fights ever so slightly faster.
Just check out the Shadiversity vid and the Robothead vid on the throne room fight -- totally tears it apart. And for me that used to be one of the few redeeming qualities of Last Jedi before I watched those videos.
@@juanbelchi402 No. The throne room scene is NOT amazing. At least not objectively.
@@juanbelchi402 the throne room fight is messy, the guards spin their weapons for no reason whatsoever. You should watch Robot Head's video for an analysis
Ewan Mcgregor having a favourite Lightsaber specifically fighting is such a nice piece of backstory that I didn't know I needed.
3:22 the way Hayden does his head movement so effortlessly is- 👌
When you realize they are actually fighting with plastic sticks
Be glad they’re not glass like in a new hope
They’re metal. Ewan said in an interview
On deathsticks
Ollie Engel-hill lol you’re both wrong they’re carbon fiber super lightweight and a strong as steel
Sucks how they uses toys in the sequel
watching this im reminded how much Hayden had to hold back in Ahsoka.
Still crazy he's able to pull it off after all this time.
4:54 Legend says that Hayden still to this day has scarred knuckles from the reshoots.
Lucas: Alright guys, here's what we're gonna do. *starts to list every piece of choreography they're supposed to do throughout the fight* We're gonna give you months of training so you're able to pull this off and we're gonna shoot this scene over and over until it's perfect. And, ACTION!
Rian Johnson: Alright guys, just wave your sticks in the air and make it look cool. And, ACTION!
Gametron13 not to mention Hayden and Ewen did all these insane stunts in the duel themselves at that speed
@@gerstein03
Apparently in duel of the fates they had to slow it down a little because it looked too fast to be realistic.
So sad really wished George Lucas kept Star Wars
Ewan Mcgregor went on Graham Norton a few years back, given a prop lightsaber, and told to show off his moves. It’s astonishing how graceful he still is with it. Prequel Trilogy actors would probably mop the floor/steal the show if they were dropped on stage and told to show off some Lightsaber moves.

They all look like they’re having so much fun! I love it.
Just imagine someone breaking into Hayden's house wit a gun but he gets disarmed and he picks up a bat and starts swinging Hayden will live safely for a long time wit those skills the robber would get demolished
I remember as a kid I went to the cinema on Revenge of the Sith.
Never been happier.
This is how it should be. The actors working and sweeting to make a good lightsaber fight unlike the sequel where the fight are horrible and badly choreograph
It actually makes a bit more sense why the fighting styles are the way they are..during Revenge of the Sith the knowledge of the 7 forms are there and are constantly taught and trained.. during Force Awakens onward those forms and its history are now almost all lost and destroyed.. which would justify Kylo Ren using his saber like it's a blunt object and how Ray just adapts her Staff fighting skills with her saber..
Darius Loera disney got low standards hmm
@@dare_he_is Kylo: Highly trained fierce dark side warrior, can barely handle a lightsaber. Yep makes sense.
@@dare_he_is What about the Red Snoke Guards? They are warriors, so lightsaber fighting styles getting forgotten shouldn't be a thing.
Watch an frame by frame analysis of this throne room scene. If you do it with an open mind, and be objective, you'll see how shitty it is and how Disney doesn't care enough to make a good fighting sequence or a good story. They are not doing it out of love, for art or to tell a story. They are doing it because they bought a franchise so they now have to make a profit
Darius Loera Kylo Ren did have some cool fighting scenes in the force awakens, but he was horrible in the last Jedi
I'm here after The Clone Wars ending. Bro, what a moment
The time and effort Ewan and Hayden showed why hard work pays off for the epic lightsaber duel that we know and love back then to now. My favorite part during their test fights is when Hayden front kicks Ewan’s stunt double in the face, not really kicking him, but seeing these types of practice fights makes me smile every time.
"It is all them, ladies and gentlemen."
I guess it took them a lot of effort and pain to DO IT together.
Haha funny. NOT
Dew it
You see the lightsaber duels in the originals and they’re great, even though they’re not complex, they’re not really meant to be. You see them in the prequels and they’re AMAZING. You see the sequels, and Rey just swinging that shit like she’s blindfolded and trying to hit a piñata.
This just proves even more that the duel on mustafar is the best duel in Star Wars.
I was asking myself why everything looks so old, I mean it's been years since the last time I saw a tv like this 1:37...and then I realized Revenge of the Sith is almost 15 years old D:
I seriously think RotS has some of the best if not the best movie sword/saber fighting ever put to film
Hayden really has a great presence and a wonderful voice. Blows my mind how mismanaged his character was from a directorial and writing stand point. I seriously can't wait to see him return to the role with better material.
I miss this era of Star Wars. I really wish we saw Hayden in episode 9. Hes Anakin Skywalker for gods sakes
Something I love is the lack of stunt doubles during anakin vs obi wan. This is pure ewan and Hayden
I'm surprised that there aren't as many views or likes, knowing how big star wars has become
That's because what is big now is a big pile of trash, not this.
2:29 LoL who's this guy?
It's a prototype shot. Just a placeholder to see how the scene should go
Its analkin
its chancellor dewit
Its Palpatine doing the "Do it" scene lol
It's the chancellor using the midiclorians to look young
In the end of the video, Sidious realizes and appreciates the strengths of both of them
Omg I love anakin Skywalker Hayden Christensen did an a amazing job
I’m not gonna say a scene full of /blue/green screen effects is the ideal scene for me, but it seems like these movies has so much better of a behind the scenes process because of the fun. Avengers movies be looking kind of limp and not as much on this level. Always stale, full of a stunt crew, and not enough of the character in it as their bodies turn into CGI models soon as they’re a foot off the ground.
Taking an extra year to rehearse these fights between each film makes them so worth it. I wish they had done that on sequels so we would have at least gotten great fights
The OT is known for giving us a story. The PT is known for its intense fight scenes. The ST is known for the many, many, MANY controversy’s.
So George, how much green-screen do you want
Gorge Lucas: *A B S E F U C K I N G L U T L Y*
One of the greatest sword duels in cinematic history. Say what you want about the quality of the films in other ways but this is purely incredible choreography, story telling and physicality.

3:35 he pronounced Qui-Gon wrong
!
"Qee-Ghon!"
"it's regional"
Its differa from language to language i for example in my language you people pronounce qui gon jin like "kuai gon cin"
Mehmetşah Sert well he's pretty clearly speaking English and most English speakers pronounce it the way it's widely said so I don't think it really has to do with language. The fact of the matter is that George didn't care how people pronounced anything because he wanted there to be regional pronunciations
All memes aside I love the prequals lol
2:19 where's that shot? That was pretty cool and showed Anakin's cocky attitude
I mean who the fuck even dares to think the sequel is better than the prequel, after watching how dedicated Hayden and Ewan work to perfect the duel of the fate.
hayden and ewan are the best duo in cinema history
Obi is defense not aggressive like anakin smh
No theres some points in the duel where Obi Wan was agressive. He probaly couldve avoided cutting off Anakin leg but he did it out agression
Clean Ren oh no that was definitely defensive, it’s like if you were to shoot someone before they were going to shoot you, it’s self defense, anakin was going to pull off some crazy move that would’ve ended obi wan so he decided to act and remember they are lightsabers from the prequels, back when they actually cut through limbs easily
It's his fighting style, which is a blend of Form Four Ataru, which is a highly acrobatic and offensive style, and Soresu, which is the one he performs most of the time. Soresu by itself is the epitome of defense, known as the Way of the Mynock or the Resilience Form, it is based on fending off your enemy's offense until they tire.
Marble if he was defense then why did he draw first?
Think about fight with maul. He was tryna woop dat ass
4:00 oh so that's thomas!
The sequel films fail to understand the physics of a lightsaber. They make it look like they're swinging 20lbs metal swords and they have no technique.
And you know this because you own a real lightsaber? how would you know the physics of a lightsaber in relation to the person wielding it? for all we know Rey could've had the blade extended at full length without it being adjusted on the hilt which is why she put extra effort into her swings because of a longer blade, and Kylo's saber, tell us how the physics would apply to a cracked Kyber Crystal in a hilt purposely constructed with two lateral exhaust vents to divert the extra heat generated by the crystal from an unstable blade, share your knowledge on the physics of a lightsaber.
Explain how they have no technique, I am assuming you're referring to Luke, Rey and Kylo right? because all three have an imperfect technique which is still a technique regardless. Lucas wanted the saber fights to be like they were in the PT because it was during the era when the Jedi were in their prime and Masters of their weapons.
Anakin and Kenobi trained their entire life either as part of the Jedi Academy or with a Master Jedi, Luke and Rey didn't have that kind of opportunity which is why their style was simplistic and stripped down. I'm sure if they spent more time honing their saber skills they would be like Anakin and Kenobi but they didn't get that chance and as for Kylo, he was more skilled than Rey because of his time training with Luke as you can see his technique was more defined.
rasta_nz lightsaber blades are made of pure energy, meaning they have no weight. You’d know that if you actually watched Star Wars.
@@NoCluYT So you based your theory off of a movie?
I thought your approach towards physics would be more detailed, intelligent and knowledgeable on beams of light or plasma containing a highly-engineered electromagnetic field, sadly I was wrong. I know energy has no weight besides, that wasn't the point of my reply.
Beams of light or plasma are tricky to contain, we would need to imagine a material with practically zero thermal conductivity to use for the saber grip. To overcome the heat transfer through the air, the best way to mitigate this issue would be to surround the plasma ellipse in an unknown gas capable of alleviating the heat, you would know that if you studied physics.
And the comment about technique? you answered nothing really.
@@rastanz about the technique, I should've remembered that they didn't have as much train, but when it comes to the actual physics of the blade, my answer still stands. It's a sci-fi movie. Things in their worlds are much different than ours. I just based my answer off of the only explanation for lightsabers I could recall.
@@NoCluYT To comment on technique, I think the stunt coordinators made the right choice when it came to choreography that their technique was displayed in a raw fashion due to lack of training even though they (Luke and Rey) did the acrobatically fancy flip moves. Their saber technique was unpolished for they both wore themselves out before the fight even ended as Luke did in TESB against Vader and Rey in TROS on the DS wreckage against Kylo.
As for the physics of the lightsaber, I guess I am just curious on how one would handle such a weapon if it were possible to harness that type of energy into such a small and confined piece of hardware technology as a saber hilt.
Could you imagine these old duels with today's technology
Dew it.

Man I would give anything to be a background Jedi or sith in a star wars movie.... That would be so dope, but then again I'd prolly get fired for takin the props home lol
I love watching this knowing Hayden kept making lightsaber noises during training
I am old so I watched all Prequels in the cinema. I really liked Episode 1 and I've always kinda not-liked-as-much the other two. Storytelling-wise, they are fantastic. Acting was also never my reason for not being entirely happy. I do remember thinking "Man, I miss the puppets from the OT". Just something about things being actually THERE opposed to "look at this green box? That's Yoda. Act with him". I *get* that Lucas was enjoying the new technology and being able to create stuff like Coruscant and all those places but man, for me as an audience, there was just something missing and I think it was the interaction.
That said - these scenes are awesome and so much fun to watch, to be able to see some of the work behind the magic. And I'm so glad that CGI-tec has developed into something real that gives the actors more to interact with than just a general "see this? That's where you look at because it's the moon".
The prequel trilogy gave us some real insight into how lightsabers could be used.. it was lost in the Disney movies for glowsticks and wobblesabers!!
Nick Gallard is fucking AMAZING with fight scenes.
You know what would have been cool seeing a quick scene of Obi-Wan and Anakin saber training in the movie maybe they use dummy sabres in the movie so they don't actually win and cut themselves with a laser-sword. They could have done this in Attack of the Clones.
