God i hope they get to the uk soon. In the midst of idiocy and hatred, a song that rings out of all that matters in the end.
I love this song. When I was seven I went to a concert. Sadly, we left right when red wing was playing. I still remember it and I love this song so much. It’s very comforting.
Oh my gosh. This takes me back to the days my Dad would sit in the living room playing and singing Redwing and other old time tunes in the living room after a day on work. What great times from my past. Thank you so much.
I should go see these cats this weekend in Roanoke
This looks just like my Grandpa. Nearing 40 and I still miss my Redwing!
This is the best arrangement of Red Wing I have heard. Thanks very much for this.
This song always brings me to tears.
This was sung at my sisters' funeral yesterday. So beautiful! She used to play this melody on the harmonica, but it had different words. So fitting for her. Love this! Thanks for posting.
Think I would like this played at my funeral...
Love how all of these guys grew up around me! Harrisonburg va and the valley is no doubt the most beautiful place in va
Not the song I expected, but beautiful nonetheless. Thank you for such a gem.
saw ya'll almost 8 years ago with my best friend, in Lancaster PA in a thunder storm. Ya'll brought the remaining fans into the amphitheater for an acoustic set cause we weathered the storm. It was amazing and the first time I knew you existed. But It was one of my favorite music experiences ever. Just wanted to share that, and maybe remind ya'll of a unique time, that a few of us will NEVER forget. This song and Rain in the Valley will continue to be a staple in my life because of it,
Wish more people knew how good you are, but doing my best to promote. Keep killing it.
Just wanted to say, even if I’m so damn late, pardon my language, I’m not the most polite person out there, thank you so much for your work, I absolutely love this song, your music has become some of my favorite music as of yet, this song in particular has helped me think on so many different things I’ve had to struggle with, I don’t know why this one in particular but it’s has helped me so much and I’m and forever grateful!!!
The simple, the pure, the real.
I'm from Red Wing and by the end of the song, I couldn't think of any better place to visit! Great song!
We have a local group a family group the Ottersons that covers this they introduced me to this song and it brings a tear to my eye every time.
Thank you see you on the flip side.
God Bless.
This is moving and wonderful! I have loved you guys since I first saw you at Queen City Brewery in Staunton and catch you at Mockingbird every time you are in town. Your version of Redwing is even on the music list for my memorial service( which I hope will be many years from now!)
A wonderful friend of ours' sings this song so beautifully. I am hoping that she can sing it at another dear friend's memorial service this coming sunday. It would be so comforting and so perfect.
You have taken a classic bluegrass song and made it a new classic. Your version seems to simplify the melody instrumentation and yet manages to make the song hauntingly beautiful. It is difficult to stop humming silently, and then singing the chorus softly and quietly. I think that I would like to have your beautiful song played at my funeral. I'll make up my own meaning for the lyrics. Take me softly...
Just heard this on the Radio in Rome, NY (not from these parts) (not sure the station) but soon as I landed I had to look this up. This song is ok, the song I heard before (the station was playing a set of Steele Wheels) had some amazing fiddle fiddling. What impressed me with this song and moved me was the commentary from the band before it. Someone was talking about how the song was written by their grandfather. The legacy intrigued me to keep listening and then when watching the video and seeing a clip of Grandpa and grandson I was compelled to spill some words in this box. Given the background on the song combined with the simple message of love and family strummed this heartsichord so thank you to the Steel Wheels and their Grandfather for a cool story and some good vibes. That old American Dream. Peace!
Wow first time I've heard this song. Fills my heart.❤
I learned to play "the Happy Farmer" on my upright and finally realized it was the same tune as the first part of Red Wing. I like your version a whole bunch. I'm 78 now, and I find that playing keeps me active and my mind alert.
Brings the tears of happuness
I never cease to be blown away
They are every bit as wonderful live as they are in this video. An American treasure.
you guys are great. never tire of hearing this one. blessings to you and all who hear you.
Love this rendition of an Appalachian standard. Nice take on the words.
I saw these guys in Cottonwood, Arizona. Best Live Show I've ever seen. Great soulful music, perfectly executed!
This song is a modest miracle. The last time I heard it live was on a beautiful Saturday on Ocracoke Island in 2019.
What a beautiful song and performance of it! Thank you for sharing. God bless, Charlie

Beautiful video. After hearing all the stories, it's so nice to get to see "Grandpa".

As Charlene Darlin on "The Andy Griffith Show" used to say, "that one makes me cry Paw". Very sentimental and touching indeed.

Beautiful!! I bought their CD when I was visiting Southern Indiana last year.
Saw this group at the G.A.R. Hall in Peninsula, OH. Awesome venue and awesome group.
As a musician who has preformed at GAR, I can confirm it is a gem of a venue. Please come again Steel Wheels!
saw these guys last week live, and was very impressed
Just discovered The Steel Wheels and Man What a Band. Get a hold of my buddy Byron Berline at the Double Stop Fiddle Shop in Guthrie Oklahoma. Would absolutely love to see you fellers at The International Bluegrass Festival in Guthrie the first weekend in October of 2017.

Steel Wheels fantastic.
I loved the modern arrangement of this tune. You keep the original in sight while making an entirely "sweet" song. Such a wonderful job. Now I understand why my son and a group of his friends travel to see you.
Ahh my best regards to all American people From the island state of Australia's Tasmania thenks for this beautiful song from all of u in this group

i love this song!!!!
Saw them at the FolkhouseOmaha concert in Omaha in 2011 (There are videos of this concert posted on UA-cam; check them out!). Absolutely unique! No one sounds quite like them. I bought a couple CDs... I think I've worn them out. WOW!
Such a sad song.
Best new "folk" band. Come in Europe! (Italy, maybe..lol) L.
Epic.....
Ashland and marika they were my best friends and then I moved to Florida my name is Milca and I remember when you preformed at my school
I think the key is in the spelling of "won/one." "She was never won...on her wings we'll be one."
This is such a nice, laid-back song. You guys do a great job, and I'll be practicing to play along with my banjo. This one gets added to our family singalong.
These guys are as tight as Dick's hatband. What a great blend of voices. Such a great song. Who wrote it? I've got to listen to it at least a dozen times or more. Really tugs at my heart strings. Who wrote this?
My feelings exactly!!!! Beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cool. Red Wing, sort of.
cool good
Is this song lyrics related to the original Red wing? I'm not American but love this song and also curious to know about lyrics :)
I mean, who is the "she" in this song? Is the girl who lost her sweetheart Red wing by war?
they played at my school mces
the fiddle players reminds me of singer in The Stray Birds
where are the Datsyuk highlights
I want to cover it, but I'll have to do it in a lower key. Trent is a high tenor; I'm a baritone.
but what's the meaning/story behind these lyrics?
Merlefest '22.
nao consigo baixar !!!
It's pretty straightforward I IV V chord progression. It's in G it would be G C D. It's a good idea to try and learn tunes by ear. Just have a go.
Like the song and harmony. But again, about the lyrics, it seems to cherish home, family, and maybe grandparents But "Money she has none, She was never one by Metal Wings and Death Machines or anything between?" Best I can guess is its an aging husband who's wife has died. His wife had little money or desire for fancy medical technology aids to stay alive. The singer of the song or husband is saying he'll "breach the gates of heaven to be with her" Is that close to accurate Trent, or anyone?
I do not believe that is the correct interpretation. He is saying that relationships are valued above material goods. At least three of these guys, including Trent, are of Mennonite heritage...metal wings and death machines specifically reference the selling of our collective souls to the military industrial complex.
:-)
I miss your daughters
