I’m not sure that’s entirely correct. My understanding is that it’s not the position that’s reset so much as the AI state information, so the alien forgets you exist and goes up into the vents. If you’re directly in the alien’s field of view when you save, I think he’ll still see you and kill you.

Normally yes. It can bug out though, where it doesn't reset. Restarting the game fixes that.

Funny thing is the alien does actually reset everytime you load a save so it wont actually stay behind you

Saving is not only 100% safe but incredibly useful on Nightmare as well, in the nest, for example.
