This was my first time watching The Hunt For Red October movie and I had such a wonderful time watching it! What a stellar cast and great intense dialogue in every scene. Sean Connery is seriously the coolest guy in the room!

I really really really enjoyed this movie !
Remember that Ryan went down in a chopper accident that put him in a hospital for nearly two years. That's probably where his fear of flying comes from. Then he has to get winched out of a helicopter during a storm and drop when they're going to abort.
if your a Sean Connery fan he was the original James Bond so you might consider a reaction to DR. NO (1962) but my recommendation would be THE WIND AND THE LION (1975).
u need to watch the untouchables.... Sean connery won an Oscar for it and its epic!!
My grandfather worked in a submarine but he became ill so they took him to the surface then to hospital soon after the submarine was blown up

I think you'll enjoy The Imitation Game. A different type of movie that I also think you'll enjoy is House Of Games (1987) also. And since you are a parent, I think you'll really enjoy Searching For Bobby Fischer.
I love how Sam Neill's character's last words are "I would have loved to have seen Montana" and this characters first scene Jurassic Park is in Montana.
It's hard to find a better action movie out there. Stakes are through the roof, characters are believable throughout, twists and turns galore...just the best.
Another submarine movie I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND would be DAS BOOT, The film is about a German U-Boat during the early years of the Second world War in the Atlantic, it is highly regarded as the most realistic submarine film.
Also my great grandfather was a machinist mate on a diesel sub in the pacific during ww2. He passed away in 2012.
So fun watching people who don't already know that he's defecting, so the "maybe he's trying to launch the missiles" is so much more impactful as a possibility.
Im a Navy veteran but all surface ships. I have mad respect for bubble heads (slang term for sub duty Navy vets) they are very mentally strong and no BS type of people, because they have to be damn near perfect.
The transition from Russian and English near the beginning is so good.
on the word Armageddon, which is the same in both languages.
And the the transition at the end as well, once we know that Ryan speaks Russian.
if you really want to get a real feel about how tight submarines, especially during WWII, watch Das Boot. It's an amazing movie.

Don't forget that the Cook was working with a different set of information than the audience. Based upon what he saw, the Captain taking the other missile key, he might have quite reasonably believed that the Captain had indeed gone rogue. The Cook might well have believed that his actions would prevent a nuclear war.

You crack me up, Imon. :) This is my very first time watching one of your reactions, and it was a good job - you may have waxed a bit long in the beginning, but I appreciated it because it was a window to get to know you and figure out a little about you.
If you dig submarine movies, you should also check out Crimson Tide. You will love the interplay of the characters in that one - enough said.
One of my top five movies ever. It's the ultimate dad movie. Middle aged guys like myself love this freaking thing, it's so epic with the insane soundtrack and so much technical stuff, and cold war intrigue. Love it.

Great reaction! It was a lot of fun watching you fangirling over Sean Connery lol. You followed the movie pretty well, most people require multiple viewings to get it all (it took me at least 3 viewings to get it myself).
A somewhat obscure but great movie starring Sean Connery is Outland (1981), highly recommended.
Its literally a western-style showdown in 80s space, and its awesome.
You'd probably really like all the "Jack Ryan" movies based on Tom Clancy's books. This was just the first of them, and the only one where Alec Baldwin played Ryan. The next was Patriot Games with Harrison Ford vs terrorist (baby) Sean Bean from Game of Thones and Lord of the Rings, then came Clear and Present Danger. And then there is a whole Amazon series about Jack Ryan, played by John Krasinski.

Baldwin was closest to the novel Ryan, and my favorite. The reason he didn't continue was that he was contractually obligated to make "The Shadow". The studio began looking elsewhere.

The German Movie Das Boot 1981( Directors Cut) is one of the best submarine movies..best with German audio with subtitles..
The Cold war was incredibly tragic for Russian Submariners, they had no less than 14 incidents with their reactors that lead to at least one death in every incident, and flat out lost 5 subs and still don't know what happened to them. What is suspected is that the Russian Manufacturing industry had serious failings with the Subs they produced. In the Case of American Subs, two Attack submarines were lost, the Thresher and the Scorpion, the Scorpion had an accidental Torpedo detonation, which sank the SUb, killing all hands. The Thresher, demonstrated a need to dry air of moisture before compressing it, during test dives wet are being used to blow boyancy tanks to rise were blocked by ice formation, and the Sub sank below crush depth, before the hull ruptured, killing all hands. In both cases the US Navy left long term nuclear monitering stations around both reactors which survived completely intact, and to this day have not leaked radiation.
I got another military movie for you to react to. It's one of my favorites. The Final Countdown (1980) The U.S.S. Nimitz goes back to December 6th 1941. It's filmed on the Nimitz.
13 Hours is a great technical military movie. Everything is mirrored to real events quite accurately.
If Tim Curry scares you Imon, you need more fun Tim Curry in your life. Try Clue. It's pretty beloved by those who know!

If you want another great Sean Connery movie which isn't Bond . . ..you *must* do "The Man Who Would Be King". Not only do you get peak Connery you get peak Michael Caine too. Both of them describe it as the best film they ever made.

You won't like this. Dead sailors on subs are stored in the meat freezer. They can't surface to do a burial at sea without risking more crew, since subs are awful in open waters. So, they keep them until they return to port.
Here are some Sean Connery must-sees: "From Russia With Love" (1963), "The Wind and the Lion" (1975), "Robin and Marian" (1976). Avoid "League of Ext. Gentlemen", "Medicine Man", "Outland", and "Zardoz". That lot are real stinkers!
I feel like The Man Who Would Be King should be added to that list. ✌

When you think about how small a sub is, keep in mind what the WW2 subs were like. Way smaller, and the canned foods would be arranged on the deck, forming what amounts to a new floor the crew had to eat their way through to regain the limited headroom they had normally.
The German (and I guess the British) submarines were small and cramped. American submarines in WW2 were comparatively large and powerful because they had to patrol the vast distances of the Pacific.
Crimson Tide and Das Boot(directors cut) must be next!
Your kid sounds like me when I was a boy..... I loved Tom Clancy as a kid. My favorite book from him was Red Storm Rising.
Yeah, it's kind of weird now more than 30 years after this film came out but the Red October's political officer was called Putin.

You are a person who I wish was a friend. Oh! And your beautiful on the outside as well as the inside. That’s a lagniappe I’ll enjoy any day. 😊 By the way, a submarine is not a “ship”. It is a “boat”. And the 2 subs portrayed in the movie are cathedral sized in comparison to a WWII submarine or U-Boat. You want to get an idea about how tight and confining it can be on a sub? Watch “Das Boot”, the greatest submarine/U-Boat movie ever filmed. It truly is a masterpiece.
Very, very cool! I was among those who suggested this film in your Last Crusade reaction, and I have toured that sub in Portland! I agree with you completely: it sounded like a waking nightmare to live on one of those. I’ll just watch from a distance in an open space, thanks!
The Hunt for Red October is not based on a true story, but it came out shortly after the Berlin Wall fell and the studio wasn't sure if the movie would play well because Russia was no longer "The Enemy" so the text at the beginning is a way to place it before the fall of the Soviet Union at the height of the Cold War. As a Gen X kid, I dunno if later generations really grok what it was like growing up convinced that the odds were pretty good that we would all die from nuclear war before we were adults. That sense of inevitable doom really amps up the beginning of the movie when you aren't sure if Ramius is defecting or launching a first strike.
The USS Dallas breaching out of the water while escaping the Russian torpedo is a real shot of a real submarine (the USS Houston) performing the maneuver. The underwater shots are all miniatures in a smoke tank.
Tom Clancy is credited as popularizing the "techno-thriller" sub-genre in novels. This novel was a huge hit, too.
Other great techno-thriller movies would include War Games (1983), Sneakers (1992), The Manhattan Project (1986), The China Syndrome (1979), and Blue Thunder (1983).
Other movies that are more spy-thriller than techno-thriller you might enjoy would be films like Tinker Tailor Solider Spy (2011), Syriana (2005), Three Days of the Condor (1975), No Way Out (1985), and The Manchurian Candidate (1962).
They definitely don't understand what living in nuclear paranoia is like, but I'd argue that the climate crisis they do live with is even worse, because it's already unavoidable.
Unlike us, who grew up believing we could be nuked at any moment, they're growing up knowing for a fact that the world will be less inhabitable year over year for the rest of their lives, and that sooner or later drought, famine, natural disasters, and general societal collapse will affect them personally. And that their forebears knew about it for decades and did literally nothing to prevent it while it was still preventable.
@@jawbone78 I mean, those of us Gen-Xers paying attention were also living with the eternal dread of climate change. The warnings about that and the noticeable impacts started in the 70's. We just tended to believe that nuclear winter would render that concern moot. So I guess, yay, we all get to live to die at our own hands (and those of our ancestors) anyway. :/

Of all the Jack Ryan incarnations we've seen over the years, I think this is the best. Instead of making him an action hero, he's more an intellectual and a "fish out of water" who gets sent out into the field reluctantly and has to actually convince people he knows what he's doing.

One of my favorite movies. Saw it in the theater when it came out. Watching these “First Look” videos is really like going out on dates. Where the date keeps asking questions during the movie.
Tom Clancy claimed he used only publicly available information in his books. The government had its doubts, and investigated that claim pretty thoroughly before they accepted that it really was public information and his own imagination. I worked with a Navy analyst years ago; he said that if he'd written this stuff, he'd have ended up in jail for sure.
One of my favorite performances in the movie is Scott Glenn as captain of the Dallas. He's just the kind of person you'd want in command of a sub: smart, tough, resolute but willing to reconsider when new information or ideas arrive. I believed in him from the beginning.
Another film you might enjoy for similar reasons is The Guns of Navarone. It's a WW2 tale of sabotage with a brilliant cast including Gregory Peck, Anthony Quinn, and David Niven. It's full of action and characters who become more interesting as we get to know them. From the 60s, but it stands up very well.
Scott Glenn took a ride on a real submarine (USS Salt Lake City SSN716) for his part in this movie. During a interview Scott Glen said he respected the Captain of the Salt Lake City (Captain Tom Fargo) and decide to base his character after Captain Tom Fargo... I served with Captain Tom Fargo and the crew of the Salt Lake City as a Sonar Rider during a West Pac. Captain Tom Fargo is/was the best Submarine Captain the US Navy EVER had... God Bless Admiral Tom Fargo and the crew of the USS Salt Lake City SSN 716. I served in the USMC(R) as a CH-53 A/D Electrician and in the US Navy Submarine Fleet as a Sonar Tech during the Cold War.
As far I am concern Submarine Duty was the most dangerous, unforgettable, memorable, and important aspect of the Cold War. During my service there have been fires on other subs while out at sea that cost some of the crew members their lives. Or flooding that the crew had to battle that could of sank the sub while at sea. The Soviet's had numerous casualties' during the Cold War where the entire sub and crew were lost at sea. In the 60's we lost 2 Subs.
First of all, you are a breath of fresh air! Seems like everyone in today's world is so eager to pass judgement on others and label a person as "evil", "bad", etc. Humans are complex beings and nobody is perfect. As you stated...a lot of the way people are comes from their upbringing. That can be a very tough thing to change. I've heard so many people say, "I'm not going to ever watch a certain actors movies/TV again because of what they've done." Well that's not all of who they are. You can still enjoy an actor's performance without approving of their words or actions in real life.
Secondly, it's ironic that you bring up the character in Gladiator who betrayed Maximus and then helped him in the end. That same actor played the cook/saboteur in this movie!

Hey glad you got into this movie. It was my Dads favorite movie so I have that connection to it but I also ended going on to serve 10 years in the submarine service, 6 of which were on a nuclear fast attack submarine, the USS Louisville (now decommissioned). I think the longest we were out for was 2 and 1/2 months. This movie is one of the best submarine movies out around, Das Boot being number 1. It is definitely a hard life and something I am glad I did but would never do again. I was always glad I am a short dude while I was onboard one of those tiny pieces of shit lol.
and boy do I have some wild stories...like the time we almost took the boat to eternal patrol while having all the families and dependents on board a mere 15 miles off the coast of Hawaii lol

On the Sean Connery thing, yeah I’m with you. We all live to regret our former selves if we’re lucky enough to grow old. Everyone has things they wish he hadn’t done when they were younger. I can only surmise without reading all of the comments posted that at least ten people have suggested "Clue" for Tim Curry, and "Legend" for Tim Curry (and a very young Tom Cruise).
You are now on the path towards the submarine film trilogy. You must at some point in time watch Crimson Tide, and then Das Boot.
In their earlier discussion with the xo and the engineer, connery had said the sabateur is not an officer, but one of the crew. Connery trusts his hand picked officers, and tells them to check putin's records on the crew. The look the engineer gave later was because he had set up the fake reactor leak. From the cook's point of view, he's doing the right thing. He saw his captain improperly take the 2nd key, and knows he has gone rogue, so he's blowing up the boat, whether to keep it from being given to the americans, or to prevent connery from launching missiles.
Edit: yeah, connery didn't deny the ego accusation. He said that he alone must answer for it.

Great reaction! A couple of details, for the sake of your curiosity. During his conversation with political officer Putin, captain Ramius asks about KGB agents posing as crew members. The book explains clearly that "assistant cook Loginov", the one trying to ignite a missile, is indeed the hidden agent. Also, while Ryan is on the american aircraft carrier we see a sort-of-out-of-place scene where a jet crashes on the flight deck. In the context of the film, the scene seems to make little sense. The book, on the other hand, describes in detail a set of contacts between the Soviet and the American fleets, keeping each other at bay with a set of "exercise" actions. During one such actions one American jet is accidentally hit and it barely makes it back to the carrier. This escalates the already tense situation to almost all out combat. This also explains the American politician's comment to the Russian ambassador about "this is how wars start".
Don't feel bad about saluting Russian military. I'm a retired U.S. Army veteran and I can tell you that all services respect each other as warriors because we are in the same business even during war - defending our respective homelands. I love the Russian people, they just have a leader that a lot of people disagree with or don't like - something we in the U.S. can EASILY relate to. We once fought the Nazis together and we share our space industry with them. I was stationed at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) Belgium in 1991 and actually saw the Russians there when the wall came down being welcomed by our commander. It was good to see and know we were not Cold War enemies anymore.
Another Sean Connery movie which I really like is The Rock. The Clancy movies starting Harrison Ford (Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger) are also really good.
I actually enjoyed your "rant," which was well considered and articulately stated. I've often said something similar, as I remember Christ's admonishment to "mind the plank in your own eye before worrying about the speck in your neighbor's eye." To me, that means I've got enough of my own flaws to work on before I point out what everyone else is doing wrong. You are lovely and well spoken.

"Doctor Strangelove" is another really good Cold War movie. Kind of like a dark comedy version of this.
I used to live 3/10 of a mile from the max line that would go past OMSI where the SUB is.
so it is the one docked at omsi.
"This movie's so good because it makes you question everyone and distrust everybody" lol that sounds evil.
That bit with the torpedo and trying to figure out the culprit reminds me of the jet scene in Patlabor 2. It's a really cool scene if you're interested in the facts and figures, military lingo, calculating risks type stuff you mentioned during some scenes here. It's also pretty damn realistic which only makes it super intense when you realize how believable some of this stuff is.
Patlabor is a highly underrated mecha series.
You should watch German WWII Movie "Das Boot". Best submarine film ever, but the reason i tell you is because German subs back then where much tighter ;)
Remarkably faithful to the book. They mostly just cut out a bunch of subplots without making many wholesale changes to the core plot. Even Ramius’s comment about the conclusions of Ryan’s book is in the book, though they left out Jack’s response that Ramius will get on fine in the US.

The book was very loosely inspired by a real incident where the officers of a Soviet frigate (not a submarine) mutinied and took over the ship. They were not trying to defect, but rather trying to expose what they felt were dangers to the Soviet Union from internal corruption. It was ultimately not successful.
I should probably also mention the actual defection of Viktor Belenko, who flew a super secret MiG-25 interceptor jet from the USSR to Japan.
The political officer was named Putin but that's very probably a coincidence as the book was written years before the USSR collapse. The Putin we know was just another KGB dude in east Germany in the 80's.
Funny that you referenced Quintus from Gladiator when talking about who you can trust, since the saboteur is played by the same actor! XD

In this age of online exchanges (specially since the COVID), folks are measuring their own morality by how many times they show how offended they are... Some folks you literally have to walk on eggshells around them, for how easily they get triggered.

North Sea Hijack 1980 also known as Ffolks is a suspenseful story at sea that might interest you.
A bit different, but the german movie "Das Boot" is another great Submarine-Movie. I think there is an english dub or for the authentic feeling german with english subtitles ;)
For a more historical military film, I suggest Glory. Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman were excellent in that one.
I absolutely love this movie! I’ve Seen it several times! My ONLY complaint is the scene where he burns the original orders in his cabin. I fully understand getting rid of the evidence but wouldn’t someone notice the smell immediately upon coming into the cabin? Strange choice. But the rest of the movie is perfection!

I really like Jack Ryan's expertise on Russia in this movie. He kind of reminds me of the late Russian Studies professor Stephen Cohen (perhaps America's last true Russia expert) in that regard.
