I pounced on this video. Tapestry weaving on a loom similar to yours is currently pushing my other (many other) projects to one side. I want to use up my wonky spun yarns into landscape style tapestry so I hope you do continue and film as you go. I find your videos very relaxing and I very much enjoy your company in my craft room. Would love to walk with you as you explore your beautiful countryside. There are downsides to modern technology for sure but one of the big pluses is to be able to sit here on the other side of the world, (NZ) and visit lovely people like yourself. Thank you so much for sharing your fiber journey, there is a lot of work goes into creating these videos.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your support and kind words. Knowing that my videos bring relaxation and joy to your craft room means the world to me. I'll continue documenting my tapestry weaving journey and sharing it with you. And yes, modern technology can be a positive thing I feel so blessed that it allows me to connect with fiber artists across the globe. Thank you for being a part of my fiber art journey!
I weave on my big old Union loom. I use 2-ply worsted for the warp and 2-ply semi-woolen for the weft. Since it's wool yarn, I do a conservative Sett then add 2 always. The first time I wrapped 18 on the ruler and went 10 epi on the Reed. In the dying and fulling steps, the fabric went from 38 inches to 32 inches wide. Cotton shrinks and wool shrinks a lot more, DUH! So I went to 12 epi on the Reed. First off, I made a couple scarves with acrylic yarn but I haven't used anything but cotton and wool since then. I have wire heddles and the 2-ply worsted seems to work well and no problem with breaking.
😅 re wall hangings!!! Hideous! 😂 loving your videos....I'm on the same journey, back to front to you....started weaving 2yrs ago....went from tiny rigid heddle, to bigger rigid heddle, then 4 shaft loom....now I've 3x8 shafts 😅 I treated myself to a new Ashford Kiwi 3 at Christmas and started spinning. First a bit of bought roving....now I've 4 fleeces an 1 alpaca to process! YAY for retirement 🎉cheers from Western Australia
oh yes, yay to retirement. The Ashford Kiwi is a super little wheel you will have so much fun. I think I love the idea of weaving cloth on a big loom but the reality just didn't suit me. Warping a big loom was just waayyyyy too boring for my ADHD brain to cope with. However, I'm enjoying my little loom. You have your work cut out with all those raw fleeces I am guessing that in Western Australia drying that amount of fibre will be easy. I wouldn’t attempt it in a wet Welsh winter. Thank you for taking the time to say hi and watching my wonky videos.
Thank you so much for this video! I used to own a small weaving loom that was intended for kids, but had kind of a heddle made out of threads. I never quite learned how to use it, never really realised its potential until I lost it having to move in unsavoury circumstances. It was actually a tiny foldable weaving loom, allowed for fabric just a hair under 30 cms and if I’d learned to re-warp it, could have made me an assortment of beautiful scarves. Learning a bit about spinning for weaving as opposed to spinning for knitting was quite interesting. If I ever come across a similar loom I won’t let the opportunity pass unused. I’ve been quite apprehensive about finishing singles and so far always ended up plying them. If you ever feel inclined to make a video on spinning and finishing singles for knitting, I’d be highly interested. This one has already provided me with clues. Give the yarn the shock of its life. Thwack it. Now I wonder if thwacking is wise on lace weight yarn. Perhaps not… but what would be the alternative? Mmmmmm…
Thank you so much for your kind words! I'm glad the video resonated with you and provided you with some helpful insights. I appreciate your support and I'll definitely consider making a video on spinning and finishing singles for knitting. Stay tuned!
I weave with Hand spun singles. A trick I discovered was to size my yarn with nonfat dry milk powder in the last hot soak. Wring out the excess and dry hanging with a weight. This yields a strong minimally fuzzy fiber that will hold up to a warp. Don't worry, the milk rinses out when you full.
A balanced weave is the same number of picks(rows) of weft to the same number of ends(warp) per inch. If beaten hard and tight the fabric will be stiffer(ferm)if lightly beaten a more open weave the more drappy the fabric. Hope this helps Sheila
I used my own “handmade” frame loom when I first started weaving 5 years ago. Then i ordered a more “professional” frame loom 🤩. My loom is a little different from yours cuz my warp yarn is closer to each other when i set it up. I am mostly weaving like what you described as wall hanging cuz that’s so much a frame loom can do 😅. I like to weave with art yarns and adding bits and bobs along the way to make some funky patterns 😁. Someday i am going to start weaving again…hopefully soon😉💜
Hi Becca, I hope you're OK xx ❣️❣️⚘️⚘️ Thankyou so much for sharing this video podcast. I live Corriedale, it spins up really well and has a very gentle sheen to it. Ilove the colours that you chise and your Handspun Yarn looks amazing and it looks beautiful in your Weaving. Yiur ither Wiven projects look amazing and beautiful too 🎉🎉🧣🌟🌟 I'm Spinning various fibres, they're from a Fibre Advent Calendar, I'm going for my first attempt at Weaving a Scarf.🧣 I dud some Wallhangings during 2020 and hadn't done anything apart from a few Coasters since then. I only started Spinning in 2012/22. Now that I can spin a fairly consistent Yarn. I thought it was about time to make a complete project. I used some of my Handspun Yarn fir the border on a Shawl . I can't wait to see what your Tapestry looks like .🎉🎉🎉 Happy Spinning and Weaving Fibre Friend 🎡🎉🐑🥰 Take care and stay safe Lots of love, Blessings and Big Hugs Jen xxxx ❤️❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏🫂🫂🫂🫂🐕
Yes Corriedale is lovely to spin . I'm very happy to hear you are using your handspun . I hope I wasn't too rude about wall hangings. I can see they are fun to make but they are just not my cup of tea . Stay safe and warm and thank you for your support 🙏🌸🧶🐏
@@bybeccalewis Hi Becca, No you wasn't rude at all about Wallhangings. They just happened to be something different at the start of the Lockdowns. I think Corriedale is the one I've been able to get the best consistency with. I think like with anything else it's hard to change, from one thing to another, especially when we get the results we're after. If you can you might like to watch some of Rebecca's videos "Change the Shed" . Sge did weekly one in 2020 and then moved to fortnightly ones. She niw dies them once a month. They're on a Wednesday. She did do other videos before then, they're very interesting. I'm sure the book will be a very interesting one. I like how you'd warped your loom, makung it so that your warp isn't limited. Happy Spinning and Weaving Fibre Friend 🎡🎉🐑🥰 Hope you have a Wonderful Weekend 🌞☀️🌟 Take care and stay safe Lots of love and Big Hugs Jen xxxx ❤️❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🫂🫂🫂❣️🐕
Thanks for sharing the whole process. I am a new spinner and trying to get the hang of it. Nothing I have spun has been too consistent. I am interested in weaving but not sure I will like it so I don't want to invest in it. I will follow your journey and see how you like it!
I love your hearth rug ❤ did you use a handspun warp too ? Which reed did you use ? I’m thinking of trialling something like that and then popping it into the washing machine to felt and make it even thicker
I used a cotton butcher's string as my warp which is far from ideal but it's all I had and I am very impatient. I think the reed was 8 dent. I do love a felted project, just make sure you reshape when it wet . I made my rug on a RHL again, far from ideal as in theory, you need more tension on the warp threads than you can get on a RHL. However, Liz Gipson from www.youtube.com/@Yarnworker/videos maintains you can make good rugs on RHL so I followed her UA-cam video on making striped rugs and I'm super happy with mine. It's one of my favourite pieces I've ever made.

🤣😂🤣😂🤣I wholeheartedly agree with you about the 80's wall hangings.
Lol I think you had to have lived through it to understand 🐏😁
Hi Becca!
Thanks for sharing. I enjoyed your projects.

Thanks so much! 😊
OMG thank you! "Give it the shock of its life" was the missing link for me. Thank you so much for this!
Fantastic. I'm so happy I could help you. You have made my day 🧶🐏😁😁

Great information thank you. I am at the stage with my weaving where I am starting to understand how much I don't understand 😭🤣🤣.

Hi Marilyn, I think I’ve had exactly the same journey as you although I’m still on an Ashford traditional. I’m in Bunbury WA.
