  • In spring of 2024, I ran across Italy, my third country crossed on foot. I followed the Via Francigena route from basically Milan to Rome but specifically from Fidenza to the Abby of Fossanova, with a tour of Pompeii at the end. In 17 days of running (including travel days) I covered 349 miles or 561 km. That averages out to 20 miles per day, while most running days I covered 25-35 miles. Total cost of the trip for travel, meals, and lodging was just under $2,000. This would have been much higher if I had used one of the many local tourism companies to arrange my travel. It's a good service if you can afford it or want extra support. Since I'm comfortable making my own travel plans, I was able to save money. My per-person costs would have been lower if I had gone with someone else the whole time to share the cost of lodging. If I had stayed in churches along the way instead of in private apartments, the total cost trip cost (minus gear) would have been under $800. Crossing Italy on foot in the spring or late fall is gorgeous! Enjoy!
