What's up everybody. It's AJ with etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna be checking out the Yakima Skybox 18. This is gonna be a rooftop cargo box. It's gonna have 18 cubic feet of space in there for all your gear. And the main point of this is to get all that gear outta your vehicle and up on the roof and giving more leg room for everybody and the passengers on your trip.
So you can put luggage in there, some bags, backpacks, skis, and snowboards. It's big enough to fit all those. And again, just make more room in your vehicle. Let's check it out. We have the 18 cubic feet one here, like I said there's the second biggest one.
The bigger one would be the 21 cubic feet but I think 18's gonna be just enough for the gear we have today. So I'm gonna open it up and we're gonna load up some gear in it and see how much it can hold out of my gear down here, just some bags, two pairs of skis and a snowboard. I think it's all gonna fit, but let's put it to the test. Got our last pair of skis. Set those in place.
We pretty much got everything to fit in here, but the snowboard didn't fit. Let's take a look and see why. Taking a closer look at the inside you can see how the skis made contact with our latches here. That was one of the problems I was having when loading this up. So you don't want me to force the skis in there that way they're on top of each other.
You could cause damage that way. And I can't exactly just leave the skis right there on top of the latch. It just doesn't sit right. I mean, maybe that would be okay. I wouldn't have access to the latch. That would sit more flat. You just wanna make sure you stay clear of the latch here so you can still close it down. So that's kind of closed. I think it's still closed that way, but either way, that was a little hard to get around these latches 'cause it just won't sit flat on those. That's why we couldn't get the snowboard to fit on there as well, because we couldn't put it on top of all this other stuff. However, that's just gonna be a problem with these longer more rigid items because you can see the bags on the opposite side, they kind of conform to the box. So they're not gonna be a problem. So them just sitting on top of the latches, the bag's just gonna go around that. It's not gonna bother that whatsoever. This is the only thing that didn't fit. So I don't think that's too bad. We got everything else up there. This was just too long. And with the bindings, I didn't wanna throw it on top of the skis. I wouldn't wanna treat my gear that way you might scratch it up, but you could still prioritize the gear you put on there. The 18 cubic feet sky box is made for the larger SUVs. Like we have it on here now. So that means you're gonna have probably have a third row or have a little extra cargo space. It's easy to take those bags down and out of there. Just throw a couple of them in the back and make room for the snowboard because it's far easier to put these up and in the box and get them out the way, you don't want these go in between the seats or leaning up or covering up the back window or anything. A lot of people like to use these sky boxes just to transport your skis and snowboards that way they're sheltered from the elements. Unlike some of the ski and snowboard carriers, they're just kind of exposed. This way they're nice and in there, they're protected and you don't have to worry about 'em. Along with the 18 cubic feet you're gonna get 92 inches from front to back. You're gonna have 36 inches width. So that's from side to side. And then it's gonna be 16 inches tall. So that's from bottom to top. Something I definitely wanna point out is remember that it's on your roof, when you're getting this roof box you're not used to having something up there make sure you see the clearance of your garage and that box. You might wanna make those measurements to make sure that it's gonna fit between your garage door. There's nothing worse than getting all the way back with it up there and find out you gotta take it off before you pull into the garage. With that 36 inches from side to side of width that leaves a little bit more space on your crossbar. So you might be able to get a bike rack on here, to carry one bike as well as this Skybox. But one thing to consider though is that this opens up on both sides. So not necessarily a feature you use all the time. Maybe you're just used to loading it up from the driver's side and that's fine. You can still do that, but if you need to make changes, you can. You can bring it over here and load from this side.

The interior dimensions of this box are just shy of 92" long x 36" wide x 16" tall. What we recommend to many people is to tape out a section on the ground that is that size and see if your luggage will fit. If you have soft sided bags, they will compress a little bit to close the lid.
