I think the disconnect here is that physical threat and spiritual threat have different starting tiers. Dogs, Badgers and Bobcats are possibly fatal to a human. And any monster with a physical form has a baseline threat level of 'fatal' to a person in almost all situations. Ghosts and Apparitions can begin as simple moving of objects and sounds. Unless a very specific series of events happens it will not actually harm you. As the power levels rise, the stats become more evenly distributed. When the ghost can scare and disturb you as well as harm you, monsters tend to gain increasingly dangerous abilities. Like werewolves having active regeneration, vampires being able to transform, zombies becoming more infectious and harder to avoid. Though in general a monster would still win out as ghosts often play by enough rules that a smart person could actually escape it or otherwise cut their losses while monsters will hunt you down. At top tier, ghosts overtake monsters in raw power. They can scare you, you can't get away, they can kill you, they can mess with your soul, they can warp reality. Monsters are still a major threat and usually unlock an EX ability. Like Werewolves turning you into one and damning you to hurt a loved one, Vampires turning you into their eternal slave, the mummys curse just to name a few. However at this point ghosts and demons are basically cheating so there's no real way to beat them. However, I want to make a note. The fact that ghosts can kill you, but after you're dead and a ghost that you can't just punk the ghost back is kind of stupid. Even if Sadako is to strong for a single person to take on, you have to imagine 100 lesser ghosts could combine forces to at least make the top tier ghosts unlife a dying hell.
@ragnar 3434 I dunno about the monster manual, but ghosts in Pathfinder's bestiary are creatures with the Ghost template. This gives them a bunch of abilities like aging you with their touch, but the scarier part is that *any living creature* can become a ghost.
I thought it was generally accepted across mythology that there are requirements for becoming a ghost alongside dying (like being drowned, committing suicide, or having a huge grudge). Getting killed by another ghost doesn't seem to be one of those things. I guess they sublimate your soul or something. I mean, you could probably make yourself into a stronger ghost if you died with enough grudge power. Like just sitting in a room going "Fuck you, you fucking ghost, I'm coming for you" and shooting yourself in the head might do it. Getting killed by the ghost probably won't.
I dunno, I can't imagine being more angry and vengeful than having my life cut tragically short by some spirit I can't do anything to avoid because I had the audacity to look at a clock or whatever the trigger is. Are ghosts just life rage quitters? And their ghostly power directly related to what tier of fighting game rage quit prison they get sent to? Wooly is definitely in the right to call them Bitch Nigga Ghosts then.
I like how the moment Matrick and Pathew reveal that Woolie is comparing level 60 Vampires to level 5 ghosts, and invalidating his argument, he says "we're losing the plot"
I'm all about this. Getting my ass haunted and slowly going insane until my soul is dragged into the abyss is no bueno. I'd take my head being removed any day. Boss Ghosts are infinitely more scary.
I'm convinced woolie is actually super scared of the idea of ghosts and perhaps had his own encounter of something unexplained that spooked him back in granada, and true terror is the fear of the unknown. He also has this constant insistence that the ghost is by default unable to cause harm or have the ability to kill. I think Woolie actually issue has nothing to do with ghosts though, it has to do with common western myths not being as metal and just being generally not threatening. If his default idea of a ghost was the Cambodian ghost then this would be a completely different conversation.
EDIT: Them talking about Scooby Doo holograms remind me of that one episode where there was a holographic T-Rex from hell that breathes fire. EXTRA SPOOKY SUPERNATURAL TRIVIA: Returning to the Philippines for a bit, everyone should know the Tikbalang, which might as well be a reverse centaur. Which might as well be Rape Horse. A superstition is also connected to them: If it rains during a clear day, they're getting married. 90% of the time, they're probably getting married to a human. While we're at that, not everyone knows about the Kapre. (pronounced the same as Decapre) Wikipedia describes them as such: "Kapre is a Philippine mythical creature that could be characterized as a tree giant. It is described as being a tall (7 to 9 ft), big, black, hairy, muscular creature. Kapres are normally described as having a strong smell that would attract human attention." They generally don't mess with people unless their tree of residence is cut down. It's benevolent enough that they're willing to hang out with humans, sometimes giving them gifts and/or magical stones. Depending on the region, some can even give you supernatural powers as well. Unfortunately Kapres are still dicks, and they're known for trolling humans by getting them disoriented and making them forget left from right. The presence of a Kapre is often punctuated with rustling of trees even if there's no breeze, spooky ominous laughter and FUCKING BIG RED EYES STARING AT YOU FROM A DISTANT TREE. Abundance of fireflies in a forest also mean you're seeing the embers of a Kapre's cigar. Yeah, they're also chain smokers.
Maki Kuronami kapres are what makes woolie not understand his lefts from his rights. He doesnt think ghosts are scary because a kapre got his ass by the nuts.

Real talk you guys, I love this little podcast segment. I'd love more discussions like this as the october month continues. Don't even feel like you have to keep it brief, I could listen to this for quite awhile honestly. Pat being able to flex his monster knowledge is really fun to listen to. Real spooky Halloween-y stuff, and great inspiration for creative writing! thanks dudes
The problem with ghosts is you don't know it's power level until it is too late. It COULD be a one time walk across the hall and do nothing but make spooky noises sometimes, or it does that and once you get comfortable with that it starts dragging you down the stairs and setting up final destination goldburg machines. You never know a ghost's power level until it's too late and you or someone you love is dead/possessed. Scarier than a wolf man because you can't touch it, and who knows how it can touch you.
Can you elaborate on some? I know Dracula is all about sexuality, werewolf is about beastly natures... But I can't think of many more. Is Frankenstein about how we're afraid of our own creations getting out of our control, whether its artistic or even our own children?
Ghosts are scarier because they're not bound by the laws of physics and have magical powers. If you see Jason on the other side of Crystal Lake, at that moment you're 100% safe because he has to be at least remotely in your area to harm you. But if it's a ghost on the other side, you take a couple steps back and turn away to run and bam, it's right there. And it can do pretty much anything to you. I don't know why Woolie thinks that ghosts can't do anything but just hover around and be all incorporeal. If I see Sadako crawl out of a well, I'm not going to be all "lol you can't do anything because you're a ghost".
Yeah Woolie has never been dumber or wronger. I agree with you 100% on why they're terrifying they just don't give a shit about rules or physics other than their own. It was wild watching the conversation just unfold like Woolie: But most ghosts can't touch you Pat: We're talking about the ghosts that can touch you Woolie: Yeah but no one talks about those ghosts Matt: Well WE are talking about those ghosts Woolie Woolie: But most ghosts can't touch you Pat & Matt: WE ARE EXPLICITLY TALKING ABOUT THE GHOSTS THAT CAN FUCKING KILL YOU And then it took like 12 minutes for Woolie to acknowledge that's a thing

What's scary about Ghosts is definitely the uncertainty of if they're a threat or not, until it's too late. A monster trying to kill me, is way more obvious than if someone is vaguely standing there, not knowing what their deal is.
Nah what's scary about ghosts isn't whether you can tell if they're a threat or not its that if they ARE a threat what the fuck are you gonna do? Shoot it? Take an axe to it? Run away? With a big monster you have some idea how to handle a physical creature but with a ghost the rules are completely unknown. Like they pointed out if a bear came in the room you know if you can run or drive away you know you'll be okay. With a ghost there's no way to know if you can kill it if you can hide if you can run if you can anything other than shit your pants and die as it just goes through all the walls you put between you and it.

The steam roller on a werewolf idea isn't actually a million miles away from what I heard about vampires. I heard that the stake through the heart thing originally didn't _kill_ vampires, but rather they _couldn't_ die and the idea was to pin their eternally-living bodies to their graves with a big thick wooden or iron stake.
Woolie has clearly never seen Ghostbusters, or Danny Phantom, or.. literally anything that a ghost can do. Ghosts don't just jumpscare, they can do direct damage.

Only scary ghosts are the asian ones...and those are also usually young....supple....nubile....creamy skinned.....raven, silky maned....
-HNNNNNGH!!
Oh no! A spooky ghost got ectoplasm all up in my jorts!
Are you one of those people that draw the girl from The Ring as a cute anime girl?
@@Some__Guy is she not a cute girl?
The steam roller on a werewolf idea isn't actually a million miles away from what I heard about vampires.
I heard that the stake through the heart thing originally didn't _kill_ vampires, but rather they _couldn't_ die and the idea was to pin their eternally-living bodies to their graves with a big thick wooden or iron stake.
"The special ghosts are legit"- Darlington 2017
More of this kinda content please! I love being able to show people small bits of the podcast
So what I got from this was: Woolie hates Spooks.
THIS IS THE QUALITY CONTENT I SUBSCRIBED FOR
(seriously. This was absolute SOLID GOLD. You made my shitty Wednesday turn into an amazing one)
Woolie has clearly never seen Ghostbusters, or Danny Phantom, or.. literally anything that a ghost can do. Ghosts don't just jumpscare, they can do direct damage.
I'm happy this showed up because this bit was SOOOOOOOO deserving of one of these
hey SBFC/SBFP/woolie is liar/ pat is now "auburn", the only way the podcast could get better is by uploading it to soundcloud.
what's crazy is that the last splatfest as of march 2023 was loch ness vs bigfoot vs aliens so they all could've taken a hill to die on for this convo
I miss you guys...
2:10 Pat subtly revealing he's into Warhammer.
"Lesser of two pant shits"
Lots of underrated comments here.
This is the right response. Because there is clearly a demand for excerpts from the podcast.
This. This is why I’m gonna miss the fuck out of you guys...
Thank you guys for uploading this bit! I was in tears by the end
About time you guys started taking your views back
