'Time' will always be my fave album in the universe ever. I was 13 when it was released. Every song is perfection, especially 'The Way Life's Meant To Be'.
+Time Lord Victorious Mine also, born in 1968, Time is still my all time favourite album ever, have bought all the formats. I used to read scifi novels at the time and they intertwined nicely together with the album in my head.
Some of Jeff’s cheekiest lyrics ever. He was always pushing tech and recording boundaries, even as a kid while using his little 2-track recorder. Out Of The Blue’s “robot voice” vocoder was a prototype coming straight from the company at the time; he and keyboardist Richard Tandy had to figure out how to use it. Also, Daft Punk state the Time album was a musical influence.
The man has written more many memorable melodies than almost anyone else in popular music. I love the BALANCE OF POWER album, which so many people hate because Jeff was relying on my synthesizers than real strings. But such wonderful tunes! "Calling America" was the big hit. You will love that one, too, if you haven't already heard it. Love your discovering this amazing artist! And as I mentioned on some other reacation, the song "Video!" is ADDICTIVE! One of those songs that if I play it, I hit "repeat" about two dozen times! LOL!

@@Cosmo-Kramer Thank you. Seen the Video video once before, just forgot. An OK song I guess. Sooner or Later has been in my library for many years. Remembering titles is not my strongest thing.
Thanks for the reaction - In my view, 'Time' is a relatively undiscovered and unrecognised masterpiece, coming after the commercial peak of ELO and when the rest of the music world was moving elsewhere. It has, I believe, stood the test of time very well and I think it's reputation has grown in recent years as people have returned to it. I suspect Cosmo will guide you through it with his customary wisdom! Thanks to both of you.
Great request. I have not heard this song in a few years. I always liked it and it has a pleasing gloom to it, a pleasant bleakness married to a cheery melodic bridge.
Jeff did indeed embrace technological innovations in music...and he utilized them to the point of phasing out actual instruments and other musicians altogether. If you look at the liners notes to his ELO albums beginning in 1979(?) he does most if not all of the playing and singing.
One of my favorite albums by Jeff Lynne and ELO. Great reaction Harry, thank you for sharing with us. As always a big thank you to Cosmo Kramer for requesting this to you. Ticket to the moon was from this album as well.
As I am used to listen to Time as one whole piece of art, I had to rewatch your reaction to _Ticket To The Moon_ after this. Time, being a progressive album and a concept album if ever there was one, is weird. Is it actual time travel, or is it a dream, a nightmare? The storyline is diffused, and very open to interpretation. In many ways Time is similar to Eldorado, with the protagonist being removed from his normal world. It is probably true that Jeff is fascinated by space and technology. We see it in _Mission (A New World Record)_ from 76. But also in a few of the early ELO songs, and before that.
Jeff Lynne loved dance and disco and totally embraced the New Romantic scene as it was very much a mix of early 70s Glam and late 70s disco. Very much part of his previous catalogue. Thank you for this review as Time was the first album I bought and this is one of many awesome tracks
I don't think Jeff "loved dance and disco". Sure, he rolled with the times, but any disco or dance-oriented songs were almost certainly written to extend his career and continue building his empire by selling as many records as possible in the changing musical landscape of the late-'70s to early/mid '80s.
I enjoyed listening to this song once again, even if for the thousanth or so time. Here is the News is another standout for me. I appreciate this album now more so than I did when it was released.
Time was eclipsed by Discovery and the Xanadu soundtrack; both of which were very commercial-friendly. Two of my favorite groups made similar albums in this time: ELO’s Time and Styx’s Kilroy Was Here.
Yes, Guvnor, that, "is what I want". Lol Been working on a robot-girlfriend in my basement for the last 18 years. Taffy (that's her name) should be ready by Valentine's Day, 2033. Can't wait!
Harri, amazing song selection! I never even imagined I'd hear a review of this song. Nice one! This whole album is fantastic, btw.... lots of great gems on it, like "Ticket to the Moon", "The Way Life's Meant to Be" and "Here Is the News".
It was the 'Time' album that really got me into ELO - I kind of liked them, then this came along and I thought it was just brilliant. I was and am and always will be into sci-fi and you don't often hear it on record. It then opened up the whole back catalogue for me. Every song is just gold - 'Ticket To The Moon' is one of the best, as that was always my dream. 'From the End Of the World, 'Rain Is Falling', 'Here Is The News', '21st Century Man'. Awesome stuff. It's amusing that while it's set in the future, all of Jeff's preoccupations are there - telephones, falling rain - and while he can't really fit trains in he does have space shuttles and Moon transports.
"Time" is a phenomenal album not particularly liked by E.L.O. purists I think it is fair to say, but for me it demonstrates Jeff's ability to see in to the future, reminisce about and long for the past and evolve the E.L.O. sound whilst retaining the multi layering. Every song is a triumph and holds together collectively to paint the picture and tell the story imagined in Jeff's mind. Thank you Harri and Cosmo. 👍😊
I was one of those purists. I didn't like the two singles that got the most radio play--"Hold On Tight" and "Twilight"--and so I did not give the rest of the album a proper chance when it came out. The lack of strings was a major turn-off. It just didn't sound like ELO. Today, I still don't care much for the two aforementioned singles, but several other tracks have grown on me. Namely the couple I've already sponsored on this channel--"Ticket To The Moon" and "Yours Truly, 2095". I have one more planned, albeit down the road, and that is, "Here Is The News". Thanks for you comment.
The songs of Time (whether originally album songs or single B-sides/bonus tracks) are all great by themselves, but to "get" the whole story, I believe the entire album needs to be listened in track order (somehow fitting in the extra tracks _Julie_ , _When Time Stood Still_ and _Bouncer_ after _Twilight_ , and before and after _Hold On Tight_ respectively.) Storywise I think the most important songs are _Twilight_ and _21st Century Man_ , but with _Hold On Tight_ delivering a lot of the morale of the story.
"Time" is a really good album and Jeff is such a good writer. This is prophetic stuff!. Indeed, as far back as 1972, in the song, "In Old England Town", the lyric, "There was air and now there's smoke. Let's build more cars and drive away before we choke, suddenly it's always night time", warns of the pollution that threatens this planet!. He still manages to put it over in such a humorous way, a dark humour, I guess. Great stuff. Props to Cosmo for putting the vid together. "Ex Machina" fits perfectly. Good film. Love Sci -Fi, like our Jeff!.
You are so correct, Cosmic Cat, Jeff was a pioneer at protesting our treatment of the environment among songwriters. Not *the* first, but one of the very few first. I can only think of two songwriters with earlier songs: Joni Mitchell, and, Marvin Gaye. I discuss this more in my Intro on Harri's reaction video to, "Mission (A World Record)", if you feel like checking it out. Oh, and by the way, how did you like Katherine's and little Jackie's, "Silent Night", duet?!
@@Cosmo-Kramer It seems I've missed quite a few ELO reactions with Harri. "Mission...", is a beautiful song which I'll definitely watch. I'm sure there's a wealth of environmental themed protest songs out there, probably quite a lot in my own collection, but it's 3.35am right now -didn't realise the clocks have moved forward! LOL - so I can't think of any. As for our Katherine and Jackie,,, stunning performance. Jackie is like a Katherine 'mini - me'. I mean, where did that voice come from? Fantastic. Time to sleep now I think. Till next time!
Cosmic Cat, absolutely, and even before ELO we get songs like _The Words Of Aaron_ ("[...]You'd see the kind of mistakes that you can't afford." That line always scares the shit out of me!), or _What?_ ("I'll blow it up and start again" also a deep dark message) and the anti-war songs from the Idle Race era, _Mrs. Ward_ and _Big Chief Wooly Bosher_ (not quite as dark perhaps.) There's also _Mission (ANWR)_ with a clear statement. _Jungle_ - which on the surface is a happy, relaxed, fun, not serious song, always reminds me of a story 'Die Konferenz der Tiere' (1949 - 'The Animal Congress') by Erich Kästner. I only know the story from the 1969 animation film, but it shares the idea of sentient animals joining in conference, to figure out how to teach humans an important lesson.
@@cosmiccat6708 Well, I'll be curious to hear if you know of any other songs between, "Big Yellow Taxi", and, "Boogie # 2", besides Marvin's, "Mercy, Mercy Me", that contain an environmental protestation message. And the answer to your question is, God.

These baby boomers like to talk about time travel, Moon the dispoditor of Pluto in Sidereal Caner for this generation is the fastest planet. And Moon is about arranged marriage or a marriage where you hVe dated for a very long time. Hence the song. In fact in Hinduism, there is a Puranic story where the daughter and father went to Brahma to seek a marriage partner. After a few days there Brahma told them if you go back to Earth you will be giants in a land of dwarfs, so I will try to make you small. In modern age, we have discovered a fele-transporter, that uses the principle of relativity so that our size remains constant - Brahma has pass the secre knowledge to humanity, or has he? Brahma has some connection with the Moon in Hinduism as both have some connection with the creative faculty.
