  • Welcome to Crystal Reef County, Florida - our chosen spot for the start of a new realistic mega city in Cities Skylines! Come along as we attempt to build realistic cities and areas using only Vanilla Assets!
    In this episode, we FINALLY establish the Downtown core of the City of San Leon, our first major establishment here in Crystal Reef County! We build up the majority of Downtown, adding in Skyscrapers and highrises, lots of mixed-density throughout such as low-density commercial buildings, medium-density offices, and everything in between! We also add a handful of placeholder parks to ensure we don't have to retrofit these later - and we wrap up with adding some very necessary city services: police and firefighting coverage as well as elementary schools! And of course - we make sure to adjust the budget according to the current needs of the city in an attempt at managing our financial situation as well as possible!

    With Cities Skylines 2 coming sometime this year, the time feels right for an attempt at an all-Vanilla Assets build - this is something I have been contemplating for a bit and hinted at earlier.
    Q & A:
    Do you have a MOD/Asset list?
    Step 1: Get the Skyve mod from Steam workshop: steamcommunity.com/sharedfile...

    - I use a tag-based trick with the Find It mod, I've made a tutorial here: • Build Cities The FASTE...
    Which visual MODS do you use?
    - Grab the MODs linked above - then open up Ultimate Eyecandy (Shift+U) and set Global Light Intensity to 5.27, and Ambient Light Intensity to 1.27.

    The interchange next to the downtown needs some work. Many of the major highway interchanges in south Florida are compact but gargantuan at the same time. The one here in San Leon is just too open. More elevated sections might make sense and a more thought out design that serves the two highways and main avenue equally. Loving the series man I don’t think I’ve seen a vanilla assets city done this good

    Loving the series. You might want to enable the default European style in content manager to get access to few more assets, specifically a full set of services and perhaps some buildings that could match old Spanish styles as that liberal arts building. The hospital and High School of that set are especially usable in a non-European setting.

    Bro it is quite amazing what vanilla assets there are available, especially whenever you have the opportunity to sort through them all instead of simply relying on the right asset to spawn in. I just recently starting playing on PC after years of only playing on console. There are assets I’ve never even seen before simply because they would never spawn in lol. Awesome build, this is going to be a good series. I may have mentioned it in times past but I love it when heavily modded players do these vanilla+ builds.

    For the big space up near the railroad you could make it a hospital/medical school complex to train the doctors of the city and others that come from around the world, making the city more diverse and increasing the customer base. I also think you should do a little monastery in the little waterfront park next to the medical clinic as an ode to the Spanish colonial past.

    Hurricane planning is very important in Florida as well as the rest of the east coast. Sunken highways are flooded highways in hurricane season. That’s probably why I find sunken highways so interesting, I grew up without them.

  • @mewr11
    @mewr11 11 місяців тому +16

    This is frickin' beautiful; I never would have expected any of this is possible just using vanilla assets. Really well done.
    For the empty area near the highway interchange, I think a basketball arena is probably a better fit than an American football stadium just due to space concerns - the stadium itself might fit, but parking for the 5K-10K (or more!) fans that would show up on game day. A basketball arena would not only have a smaller footprint, but it would also generally have fewer seats, probably 2.5K-5K. Also, basketball arenas are more usable for non-basketball events, such as musicians' tours and other traveling shows or acting as a pseudo convention center until an actual convention space exists in Crystal Reef.

      I like the idea as an arena would make much more sense than a full fledged football stadium, but from a scale standpoint I think you’re a little off (since you mentioned parking), ….professional basketball/hockey arenas generally seat 15-20k in the US, with most D1 collegiate arenas more in the 8-15k range in terms of capacity. So we’re looking at a larger scale….shoot I went to a semi-pro basketball game in Puerto Rico that had 7-8k in attendance and the arena wasn’t even full. So even if San Leon maybe won’t have the highest level of professional sports, you’re still looking at accommodating parking for at the least 5k people, not the other way around.

    • @Jk29689
      @Jk29689 11 місяців тому +1

      An American football game of professional level NFL is attracting no less than 30K guests. That’s why most stadiums are built in the suburbs to accommodate the heaps of parking. Arenas such as hockey or basketball are more found in the downtown core, often utilizing underground or parking garage uses and public transit to surface lots likely farther away

    • @a_boat93
      @a_boat93 11 місяців тому

      @@Jk29689 yeah exactly. And it’s not that you can’t have an NFL stadium in a downtown core cuz it can be done even from an urbanist point of view but the reality is you still gotta understand there’s gonna be like you said 30-70k in attendance to accommodate every home Sunday. Sad reality is that most are driving to the game cuz of tailgating and etc lol

    • @mewr11
      @mewr11 11 місяців тому

      @@a_boat93 At this stage of the city's development, I'd imagine the arena would be in use for high school or D2 collegiate action, not upper tier D1 or professional arenas - I used Florida Tech's facilities as an estimator for facility sizes, as it's located about where Crystal Reef County is depicted in the intro.

    Lovely episode man. Can't wait to see how the downtown expands over time. You love to use the small parking and bouble it up, did you forget the update came with two new parking assets one is bigger, and there might be a parking garage I in vanilla I think. Additionally I think surface painter is vanilla enough mod you should implement a bunch more for the little detailing vanilla lets you do; you have the aperons but surface painter can let you do blops of dirt under bush, and lets you remove surfaces from edges of networks and can change the look of the terrain in so many little vanilla ways. You could make a golf course with just surface painter and some trees and paths.
    Also you should try to do a youtube colab with Two Dollars, you two play the game my favorite out of all UA-camrs.

      Thank you R5cents, I appreciate it - and good point regarding the bigger version of the parking lot as well as the garage, need to keep those in mind for bigger builds. I prefer trying to stitch together the smaller version here in the downtown core. As for surface painter my game for some reasons lags a lot when I enable it, 99 % GPU usage and 3 FPS and I have no idea why :-/

    Fantastic series! I love it! Florida does have a regional rail, The Brightline, that is expanding fast. Florida also has a very well respected educational system. I would suggest building several massive high schools with big sports infrastructure

    Tearing down old buildings? Nah bro, hurricanes and tsunamis do that for us. The oldest town we had was swallowed by a hurricane. It's roads are still there but the buildings are gone.

    I have a question:
    Why do you never place houses/Buildings on the outside of your streets?
    You are practically wasting half of your zoning squares on every street that "encircles" a neighborhood.
    The plots of land between the street and the beach would be the most valuables in the city.

      Thanks for the feedback Mickilennial! Is it the overall downtown you're thinking about? ☺

      @@Infrastructurist Yeah more or less. Downtowns are a bit more dense and I don't know how to explain it but it feels like a mini-downtown at best to me. Still good stuff, but I feel like it ends right as it gets started.

    Amazing work but is so sad to see a city car dominated like this.
    Maybe I find it strange but being from Europe is not usual to see cities like this.

      Most cities in America are car centric and since this city is based of off one in Florida I guess that's why it isn't as walkable

      Florida is extreeeemley unwalkable. not only is it crazy hot and sunny here, people drive like maniacs. even if you can bear the heat, the anxiety of cars zipping past you will quickly change your mind.

    better crawl in height to where as most youtubers have either very flat skylines or a supertall building that stands out to much a good example in verde beach by cityplannerplays.
