Welcome to a new language challenge street video. This time I did this project in another Dutch city, the name is Hoorn.

@Allan Ren enough to connect to people. you don't need to have super deep talks in a person's language if you just want to connect to them.
That is because when someone is from slovakia he usually knows these other 3 languages as well. But i bet that he don't speak polish that well to count that.

The Slovavks at the end barely spoke Hungarian; all they said was "How are you" and then the guy says "I speak Hungarian and I was at work" (with bad grammar) - and then Wouter cuts him off and gives him the money ... Oh well, if you don't know the language there's no way of knowing if they're fooling you! :D

naah, his Hungarian was perfect. it's not the Budapest dialect, it was perfect for the area where they are from. annyira unom, hogy leszólják, ha valaki nem a szokásos kiejtéssel beszél, teljesen jól nyomta a srác magyarul.
His Czech was literally one sentence, cause he picked one, which is similar to Slovak.. I wouldn't count that
@@Monika-wo7nd yeah some languages are close enough for you to understand and be able to understand them even if you speak only one of them, which I'd consider more as a dialect than a whole different language. norwegian, swedish and danish for example

@@CursedDictator a dialect is a complete language, the only difference is the popularity : a dialect is not as popular as the main language
@@simonvachet846 thank you so much for that reply . You have no idea how many people have made fun of and been overall mean because of the way I talk and it is common in the region I live in. I do see it as it's own version of a language because many words that do not exist are spoken daily in my city which are a blend of Spanish and English such as carro for car and parkear for parking

It's actually surprising that you pretty much never meet Nordic languages in Netherlands. Much more often Chinese, Indonesian or Russian.
Nothing surprising for me, Netherlands is a popular destination for many people from poorer countries, mostly because of money :). That's why there are so many immigrants from Asia or Eastern Europe there, Scandinavians are rather tourists I guess.
Yea i am from Belgium i have seen people from every part of the world apart from Scandinavia i guess the sparse population is the reason i am still learning Nordic languages thanks to the internet.
@@belstar1128 well, 20 mio or so Scandinavian.. Maybe it's just because Benelux are not considered a high interest holiday location / tourist spot in these places? Which is a shame btw

Those are mostly tourists. most group of people here are turks moroccans surinamers and antillians

I think people from Malaysia and Indonesia doesnt really think Indonesian and Malay are a seperate language, more like a different dialect. A person from Indonesia and a person from Malaysia can sit down together and have a conversation with both of them using their own language. Thats why the Indonesian girl said yes when you ask "can you speak Malay?" I'm Malaysian and if a guy said can you speak Indonesian I would say yes aswell.
im indonesian and i agree. but, try telling that to a hardcore indonesian nationalist and you'll get yelled at lol
the thing about indonesian language is that nobody really speaks the standard indonesian in daily lives. most of us just speak our own regional dialects that are mostly influenced by the respective ethnic languages from the regions. this makes many indonesian think that their dialect is already a language when it's actually not.
i don't believe that the so-called Bahasa Betawi is a language. it's a dialect with heavy malay, hokkien, and arabic influences.
I knew Malaysian ppl who spoke/kinda spoke Malay and they never rly talk about Indonesian stuff (except like IndoRamen I guess)
I do kinda agree, i can speak 4 languages but i dont really count malay as one so i usually say 3. I also think Indonesian language is much more refined than malay, but it doesnt really make it another language, its just like anglo saxons and norman english

Great that you show the linguistic diversity in small towns! My town isn't a metropolis, but going shopping in the town centre one can speak 5 languages without any problem
I WAS LOOKING FOR A HUNGARIAN SPEAKER FOR SO LONG THANK YOU!!! And they wasn’t even Hungarians, but probs came from the parts after “Trianon” where they have been raised as Slovakians but had to learn Hungarian bc of parents or school. Cool cool.

Whenzhounese is a good one. Only the people in Whenzhou understand the language, noone else does. It is a bit like Frisian in The Netherlands, but even harder for others to understand.
I think it's more of a dialect though.

It sounds more like Japanese/Korean than Mandarin,so I think it could probably count as a language

@@user-oh9lq6gx6h Wenzhounese is actually super hardcore, it is similar to ancient Chinese and has little connection to the modern language.
For example tiger in Chinese: laohu, in Wenzhounese: deumuo
Goose in Chinese: e, in Wenzhounese: gaa-ng
Bat in Chinese: bianfu, in Wenzhounese: lecei beiyai
Gecko in Chinese: bihu, in Wenzhounese: ngzuolie

He was slovak not czech but yeah. Bet he do not really speak polish. Everyone understand but speak it is something different. I am from czech republic BTW.
Not every slovak speaks czech and many czechs do not underatand slovaks - but this literally is only the young people of past 25 years. All older generations are either bilingual or understand each other
Like how he also uses the opportunity to learn more about the languages he both knows and doesn't know. A great way to practice.

Hello . I recently started watching your videos and they are perfect. I was born in Montenegro, I lived in Serbia and grew up in Serbia. I currently live in France. my suggestion is to learn Serbian is difficult but I think you will learn very soon. Good luck .

The Slovak guy tricked you a bit :D I’m speaking czech, slovak and understand polish and that guy definitely didn’t speak polish but slovak plus a very few polish words 😂 and czech and slovak are that close, they are more like a dialects then separated languages 😂 poor you

being Czech you should know Slovak and Czech can't be called "more like dialects rather than separate languages". We have different grammar, so many different words, many Czechs don't understand Slovak.. but yeah...I agree he tricked him. The Polish was not Polish at all.... in 2 incomplete phrases he maybe used 2 polish words??? ....and the rest was just a poor accent.... also I wouldn't call him, or the girl polyglots....that's an offense to anyone speaking various languages PROPERLY. I speak Slovak, Czech, English, German, French, Italian, can hold conversationn longer than the one he made in Polish in 2-3 different Italian dialects, understand various Slavic languages (Polish, Croatian, Ukrainian, can read Russian, understand basic conversation in Spanish,) and still wouldn't call myself a polyglot.

I’m from the US and would love to see you visit for another video like this. We are required to take 2 years in highschool, if you go to college thats 2 more years and most take more throughout other grades too but Ik our education system isn’t the best so it will be difficult to do but if you go to New York their is a lot of diversity. I’m learning French and Norwegian now so I’m on my way to speaking 4 languages
Hey Wouter! I notice that you used "anata" to reference the other gentleman when talking. In natural Japanese it's actually a bit rude to use this word. Usually you would use the person's name (if you can get from them in conversation) or another pronoun. Anata is usually used as like, "honey" in a married relationship, but rarely outside of that situation nowadays. 日本語の勉強で頑張ってね！
It is very much acceptable to use ''anata'' with strangers you have just met. It's only considered not polite with people you do know. He used it correctly there
He also did it with Korean because he used "dangsin". Wouter said he isn't that great with Korean and Japanese yet and so he still needs to get better on subject ommission and honorifics.
Like Alec said, there are actually no pronouns in Japanese so “anata” is the politest form of “you” in Japanese. Obviously using their name is best, but if you don’t know it anata is what you would use for meeting someone for the first time. :)
At least he's not using omae or teme!
@@overthebridge_ Well... anata even when used with strangers can be polite or rude depending on the context and how it's used. For example, you would never use anata with someone that's at a higher position to you within a particular context - so you wouldn't use "anata" with a professor (where they are interacting with you in the capacity of a professor) even if you're not a student and you have never met this professor. And sometimes even if it does sound polite, it's still just unnatural because you wouldn't even use the word "you" in that situation if you were a native speaker.
Probably more accurate to say there is no default pronoun, and you havd to pick the right one (or in some cases, don't use any at all) depending on the situation, your relationship with the person you're speaking to, and the actual things you are trying to say. Sometimes "anata" is polite, sometimes it's not. Sometimes it's natural, sometimes it's not.
There are also more polite forms of "you" than anata, like "anata-sama" and then really formal ones like "kiden" and "kidai" that are generally reserved for emails and letters.

Lot of east europeans can speak 2-3 languages. I am hungarian and I live in Austria (deutsch😊). It would be awesome if you will learn hungarian, it's super hard but give it a try please 👍💯

Hello. I am so glad, because I find your Channel. I speak also a few languages: hungarian, romanian, english and german. I also undestand spanish, french, portugues and italian, but is hard for me to speak them. I'd like to emprove this languages, maybe can you give an advice.

Wouter, you could do the following.
You could do a reading challenge. Person x says language A. You take your phone and find an article in language A. If you can read it and understand you keep the money. If you can't, person x reads it and explains the general idea of it in English. Google translate it, if the person got 70% or more of it right, person x gets the money.
That way you wouldn't be scammed so often.
It depends. I learnt Marathi at school in India and if I read a passage, I will get it 100% right. But if I had to speak, it is almost impossible for me to kickstart without watching a video because I almost never spoke it and it has now been replaced by German in my brain. Which is why I think the sweet spot for an average person to know multiple unrelated languages is around 6-7.

I really enjoy your videos! Do you speak quechua or aymara? These are native languages from south America. It is spoken by some people of Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Argentina.

That last guy hardly said something in those languages, and earned your money. I find it not too fair, because for example i can say a lot more in romanian and understand about 70%, but still i dont consider this language as one that i can really speak. I speak russian,english and german fluently.

Hi Wouter, I think you are really impressive. You speak so many different types of languages. Wish I could be like you. Really enjoy watching your videos. Actually, I would consider Wenzhounese as a Chinese dialect and not really a language, since it is just a regional dialect of the Chinese language. But I might be wrong on this. Just like in China, there are many different types of Chinese dialects. Similarly in Japan, there are varieties of Japanese dialects too.
Not really, though. There is no "Chinese language", there are a bunch of Chinese languages, but they're mutually unintelligible, meaning they aren't dialects, but separate languages.
You got a great talents!! Great to be a polyglots because it is very useful if you are a traveller.

I would get some euros too - i speak slovak, czech, english, bit of german, hungarian, russian, polish, afrikaans and a little bit of sotho, french and spanish ;)
I wonder what is seen as "speaking a language". Some of these really feel like a couple of standard sentences instead of actual knowledge and ability to speak a language. It's hard to know where that line is, but I'd count at least B2 level as speaking a language.
Yeah exactly. I don’t consider memorizing a few lines from each language and then regurgitating it without actually conversing with the other person “speaking the language”.
As a linguist with a diploma in Korean Studies I constantly keep getting embarrassed when I hear him speaking this language (his sentences make no sense, are grammatically incorrect and he's making very basic mistakes). He should give money to the people that are speaking Korean because he can't speak this language.
Nah, speaking the basics is speaking a language already, but of course that are different levels. If you can maintain a simple conversation, that's enough, as he never mentioned that he is fluent in all those languages, that's totally different. The majority of people could not do that with even just 2 languages, and he does it with 29, is it no impressive enough for you?
