That will forever hurt! I even remember watching the other semifinal first and thinking that when Halep lost, the title was Serena’s. She was so much in her head and got outplayed by Vinci too.
I feel she would have lost to Flavia Penneta in the final even if she beat Vinci. It was all mental. She showed so much mental toughness at the French open and Wimbledon, but it just disappeared in the semi finals, and was never the same mentally after the match. Since Serena and Djokovic couldn't achieve the grand slam, I don't think anyone can do it again. Steffi's record in 1988 would never be broken
Despite the US open loss this was pretty impressive! The queen was on fiyah!

No, as good as she was - she had a tendency to choke in important moments.
And when she lost the first set in a slam final she usually folded like a cheap tent.
Somehow the successes of 2015 makes the losses sting more. USO, Madrid, Hopman, Rodgers, & YEC. Key losses were a precursor for what 2016 would bring.
She didn’t play the YEC and Madrid and Hopman cup were completely inconsequential losses.

Looking back, taking an extended break after that loss at the US Open wasnt the best move. She could’ve benefited from playing her jitters out before 2016.
