I was absolutely able to tell the difference, but I had them completely swapped! I pegged the wooden one as metal, and the metal as wood, which really amazes me because I've played the clarinet for over twenty-five years. O.o;;
Wow!!!! That's like the ultimate testament to how similar they sound. I had a hard time telling them apart too in post. Keep up the awesome clarinet-ing!
Same happened to me. The difference vs. your comment is that I am a bansuri flute player and had never ever thought of clarinets I just purchased a hand made all wood "wooden" clarinet.
I thought that was wood but it was metal and vice versa !
same here!
Me too. The metal instrument sounded mellower, so I presumed it was the wooden one.
Me and my perfectly trained ears:
1. A clarinet
2. That's a clarinet
3. Definitely a clarinet
4. A clarinet
5. A guy playing a clarinet
6. Maybe... A clarinet?
That's what I call a perfect score u.u
(Jokes aside, I like this format! And after your explanation, *maybe* I was even able to perceive the difference in sounds.
However, just in case you wanted to replicate a similar video with other instruments, a quick, optional demo of the two before the actual game would be higly appreciated. In this way, even uneducated people like me could still play the game according to what they had the heartwarming illusion to grasp from the brief introduction).
Haha yes I love your responses!! 😂
Definitely a good idea! The reason I didn't do it before was I wanted to hammer the point home that they sound pretty damn similar. Which even I found surprising because they LOOK so different. I may do another one of these with my wood and metal flutes
As a clarinet player myself, I honestly couldn’t tell the difference at all. I was expecting a more brass instrument-like sound, but I was surprised by how much it sounded like a normal clarinet. I’ve only been playing the clarinet for 5 or 5 1/2 years, so there’s actually still a lot I don’t know when it comes to the instrument. I definitely have to work on audiation, as well as being able to play altissimo range better. I didn’t even know completely metal clarinets existed, so thank you for exposing me to this
For sure! That's actually why I made the video because they sounded a lot more similar than I was expecting too when I finally got my hands on a metal one.
I imagine there would be a difference if the mouthpiece was also made of metal.
I don't think the difference is that strong, but I definitely do feel as though the wooden clarinet has a richer, fuller sound.
I fully agree with all you've written! Thanks for playing 😊
and sweeter
I imagine there would be a difference if the mouthpiece was also made of metal.
Yes, both sounded great and I thought the same thing!!!
I got it right on all of them but only because I suspected the metal clarinet sounded more resistant due to not sealing well. I play on hard rubber clarinets. I’ve learned a long time ago that the material matters little compared to the design.
True! Old pads and limited repair-ability are what really dooms the instrument.
It's more of a fun toy than anything else 😂
I actually think the metal clarinet sounds considerably better than plastic
As a clarinet player. I got all of them wrong 😬🙃
MAMAAA MY TIME HAS COOOOOME
😂😂😂
Literally when putting this video together I even was getting some of them wrong... and I recorded the dang thing!
Exactly same
Cake the cat BRO I HAD TO PLAY BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY IN MY BAND
Swear!
Send shivers down my spine...
The metal clarinet is pretty awesome but I think I prefer the sound of the wood clarinet better. Watching your clarinet vids has made me want to pick up playing clarinet again!
Ah so happy to hear this! ^_^
I’m like 90% sure I hear that 4th one every time I’m at Disneyland in line for the Matterhorn
That metal clarinet is tuned so sharp
Ah yeah it's very hard to control :/
BECAUSE it is a very small, straight bore, not a polycylindrical bore. Although, that Selmer might not be a true polybore either.
1. Metal
2. Wood
3. Wood (Route 1 XD)
4. Metal (I can't)
5. Metal (I can't again)
6. Wood (Pokemon Theme XD)
Dang it 4/6 :D
omg good job!!!!! tbh you did better than I did when I was editing this together and trying to guess which clip was which 😂
@@InstrumentManiac :D
I thought a metal clarinet would just be a soprano sax, guess I need to learn how that works
Different mouthpiece, bore, and keys!
1. clarinet
2. clarinet
3. clarinet
4. clarinet
5. clarinet (they low-key sound da same so i aint know)
Me and my perfectly trained ears:

6. Maybe... A clarinet?
That's what I call a perfect score u.u
perfect score we stan!! 😂
Either you stole this from Marco Disarò
_or_ they edited their comment and stole yours. The former seems more likely.
I got it! One sounded more airy to me & I guessed that it was the metal one. Did I really know? no. lol. I'm quite impressed on the sound & quality of the metal clarinet.
Ah good ear! Yeah I was surprised by how good the sound was too ^_^
On my phone speaker I could hardly hear a difference. Was expecting the metal clarinet to sound a lot more like a soprano sax.
Nice video length B^)
Right!? When I bought it I was stunned how... normal it sounds 😂
Yea I just noticed it’s 4:20.
Nice
That's quite interesting. Could hear the difference especially the timbre near the throat notes, the metal clarinet tends to be a little blaring around the throat notes. I find that over all intonation is much better on the wooden one. It's less distinct between the 2 in the lower register notes.
I loved the low tones on the metal one!
OMG I CAN BELIEVE YOU'RE PLAYING YOSHIS ISLAND MUSIC! That was one of the first songs I learnt on clarinet rofl
Haha nice! This is another song from Yoshi we did on clarinet: ua-cam.com/video/DlQZjGBBWPQ/v-deo.html&ab_channel=InstrumentManiac
Easy. I think it would be harder to tell ebonite vs wood but metal has a more focused, but less resonant and warm tone, especially with more pronounced overtones. It's not a huge difference in the recording but enough to tell.
I love the metal sounds..thank you
Wow you have talent. Its beautiful. My daughter wanted to hear the difference. She loves playing. Thank you.
Thanks Hannah glad to hear!
I love the Pokémon music. Random. Beautiful. Glorious
I just came into possession of a really old Gretch Pathfinder metal clarinet. If the serial records are to be believed then that Gretsch was made in 1898. It’s sat in a junk yard for a lot of years, the silver plating is heavily tarnished and in some places completely worn through. It’s going to take a lot of time to fix but these instruments are so cool that I feel I have to fix it
Totally agree!
4&5 are from Parto Parto!
omg you clocked it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wow you get like a billion gold stars for that I'm impressed!
Thank you for making this, I've been thinking of ways to make a fully metal ensemble sound still using woodwinds and strings and this provided a lot of insight. Soon enough I'll get my own metal clarinet
Though I'm a brass player so idk how well I'll be at playing it lol
Good luck! Make sure you have a repair shop lined up because these traditionally need a lot of work to be playable 😄
I love the metal clarinet ❤️ :) 💯💯 I missed #3
Awesome job! Right!? It looks like it's from the FUTURE
As an owner of a Selmer Paris (1929) metal clarinet, I got them all wrong except the last one! I'd like to think it's because I watched this video on my android phone...
Wow that's old! Haha it may be the phone - it also could be how janky my metal clarinet is 😂
As I’m typing this, this video came out 4 years ago and I’m getting notified about it now 😭
Good job, To be a true, accurate comparison test (especially conducted blind), all sample sound bytes should (at the very least) played in the same register and preferably the same passage and dynamics and articulations.
Nailed it! I prefer the wood on soprano clarinets, much darker tone. Now, on contrabass clarinet I prefer metal and actually really dislike the sound of the model 41. I'd take a paperclip over it any day. I feel like the brighter sound really makes it a little more punchy in a group.
I only got #5 wrong. I had a metal clarinet decades ago in middle school.
and about a $2000 price difference
My wood clarinet was only 150 off craigslist 😅😅😅
Just got one for Christmas lol. I haven’t brought it to the shop yet and also don’t have any reeds cause I currently haven’t had any reed instruments prior. But I’m excited to learn how to play it
Have fun!
I'm glad to know I'm not the only one that plays Route 1 from Pokemon Red and Blue as a testing/tuning piece. lol
I noticed soon that one was projecting less. As a (n amateur) singer, I'm trained to assess projection as I am supposed to have as much as possible. Then, remembering how the xylophone and the vibraphone sound, I pegged 2 and 5 correctly to the wooden one. Number three I wasn't sure.
All in all, I deem myself satisfied.
Ah you've got it precisely! The tone is generally similar to clarinet (the point that I wanted to get across is that metal clarinet =/= soprano saxophone). But the metal clarinet tone is brighter and doesn't project as well. Thanks for watching!
The metal has a better jazz sound in my opinion due to the difference in timbre. Maybe that’s me but I’d like to hear jazz on the metal clarinet
It does have a nice lighter tone!
I could definitely tell a difference. But I had them completely swapped!!
I closed my eyes and could tell between the two. Played clarinet for 9 years.
Just came across this again. The metal sounded more naisely to me of that makes sense.
This is such a fun video! I only got 2 correct- it seems you make the metal clarinet sound more like wood? What reeds do you use? Thank You for sharing:)
Thanks Mia! I generally use Vandoren 3s, but depends on the mouthpiece and weather :)
I love the sound of the wooden clarinet and I've noticed that the metal clarinet seemed to have a mix of between sax and clarinet sound. I know this because I do play the Clarinet and also sax not the tenor but the one smaller then a tenor sax.
Clarinetomaton, I choose you!
I wish you would have gone over the break more on the metal, but very cool!
Me who plays trombone

He fallado, no soy digno.
El 2 y 5 pensé que era metal por la brillantez del sonido , aunque con el 2 si dude bastante el 5 estaba casi seguro que era metal
WAIT YAY I GOT THEM ALL RIGHT I WASN'T EXPECTING THAT
Dang that metal one sounds way warmer than I thought!
Thanks for the video. Less difference than expected.
I wonder how clarinet sounds in Silver or 14K or 18K gold like flutes.

I'm interested in the weight difference please!! Is the metal one heavier or lighter than the wooden? By how much you think?
I honestly didn't hear a difference. Maybe if I put on some nice headphones.
Headphones definitely help! But it's pretty difficult to distinguish either way :)
The metal clarinet sounds like it might do better with a different reed and/or mouthpiece. Still, it has a very interesting, mellow sound despite being metal. Curious what metal it is actually made of to have such low resonance.
I love got all of them right, the metal clarinet is more of an airy sound
1. Wood (wrong dang)
2. Wood (LETS GO)
3. Metal? (Nope, got that one wrong)
4. Metal (yep)
5. Metal (not quite)
6. Wood (nope :/)
I had to guess on a bunch.. (I went back through and put if I got the answers correct or not in brackets)
I have both types of clarinet, so I got them all right!
I guessed the metal clarinet would sound breathy. I got 100% on my guesses.

In my 1920s jazz orchestra the sax players double on clarinets. When they pick them up after a break, they are always low. Even in recordings be the best orchestras from the period, you hear clarinets that are too low. Could I avoid this problem by switching to metal clarinets?
You might be able to! Although you'd probably be sacrificing quite a bit of tone for a bump in tuning
1 WOOD 2Metal 3wood 4 wood 5metal 6wood
I was wrong every time except for the last, and I've been playing one for 40+ years. Let's do curved vs straight soprano!
The other day I had a thought. "Would a metal clarinet just basically be a saxophone."
I kept this thought to my self but the algorithms telepathy lead me here.

😔 Ya boy’s 6 years on clarinet and bass clarinet failed them
Haha I'm in the same boat. It's hard to tell the difference!!!!
Next up: Wood vs. Brass Saxophone
I didn't recognize just n. 4 correctly 😀. Good result I think! Wooden clarinet suits me more 🙋. I like you are still so playful! (In all meanings of that word😁).
Thanks for playing along and glad you had fun! Yes I'm more a fan of the wood clarinet too for the sound (but the metal looks so dang cool!)
Hi. I will buy a clarinet for my daughter on next week. . What brand will u recommend to me. . Thank u 🇵🇭
Great to hear! I'd recommend LeBlanc, Yamaha, or Selmer. They have great cheap student instruments and usually you can find them used on Craigslist for $100 - $150 USD
In my orchestration class and compare the sound of metal clarinet to soprano saxophone. Then I explain to them it is actually the difference between cylindrical and conical, and the material it is made out of makes zero difference.
Partially right! Cylindrical vs conical does determine the type of sound but material has a huge impact on timbre and quality of that sound. Which is why clarinets can cost between $60 and $60,000+ 😂
What song is # 4, it sounded great
i am surprise to hear the metal clarinet as a wooden one. You must have a good round tone to make it sound so smooth. i got the first wrong which is annoying, for i have been playing the clarinet for 5 years now .:)
Thanks MichRom! Haha I was even having trouble distinguishing them while editing the video so it's totally understandable 😂
I actually like wood more gives it a warmer deeper sound.
So i think the difference is metal gets a cleaner sound, like a tuning fork, while wood seems to have more of a mix of frequencies. It seemed to work as a method to guess
I could tell them apart, but that’s probably also because I have a metal clarinet and have played them before. The stencils are OK but not spectacular as long as they are in good repair, but if you actually have a good professionally made one, they actually can be just as good or better than a wood, especially if you’re in marching band they are great since they are not as subject to pitch changes from the weather and such. My HN white easily compares to my Leblanc imo.
Link to the background music at the beginning?

got 5/6 correct ... error with #4
I do not play clarinet, but dad did play throughout my childhood :)
A metal clarinet is just a saxophone
But the metal clarinet sounds more so clarinet than saxophone but still
Actual clarinet and saxophone are completely different! The clarinet is a cylindrical bore instrument and overblows a 12th. The soprano sax is a conical bore and overblows an octave. Also the way the mouthpiece is cut channels the air differently when vibrating the reed. All these differences are what make the sound unique between the two :)
what is the 4th piece please
There is a difference but its not extremely obvious: perhaps if you didnt pay attention (if it wasnt a test) you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference. So what confuses me now is what makes a saxophone and clarinet sound very different. I play the sax and the metal clarinet sounds really different from a sax: both are metal tubes with single reed nonmetal mouthpieces. I mean a sax is a conic tube and clarinet is a straight tube but why would that make such a big difference.
It's the bore as well as the mouthpiece technique that work together to make the difference!
I’m not sure if it was the instrument or the reed, but the metal clarinet definitely sounded airy in comparison to the wood.
It’s very nice when people play the same phrases on two different instruments in terms to sense the subtle differences. The way you did it doesn’t deliver that.
I believe that metal clarinet leaks somewhere... Quality of a sound sometimes is not good... Or maybe you just played like that which could explain why it sounds more like wooden than an actual wooden clarinet sometimes... Anyway it's great to hear those side by side! Thumbs up!
The metal clarinet is like the flugelhorn of clarinets :-)
What was the first song???? I liked it sooooooooooooo much
Ahh happy you enjoyed it! ^_^ It's my collab from last year:

I’m sorry what was I supposed to do? I couldn’t stop staring at your eyes lord help me
😆😆😆
🥰
what is the fourth song?
Well, I got 4/6 right. But they sounded pretty similar to me!
Anybody know what the song for #3 is?
How can people not tell I don't even play clarinet!
Lmaoo I was wrong on all of them haha.
Btw, I think the metal one would sound great in a jazzy group (like with tubas, trombones, and other metal instruments. But the wooden one for literally EVERYTHING else lmao. That's my opinion tho :3
Great video!!
Thanks for playing EZ! Yeah I agree with you on that. I think the metal works great for a jazz group or some kind of blending element but for anything solo I'd probably stick with the wooden one.
I had them mixed up several times and I thought one sounded both better and worse than the other during the different passages.
Specifically I preferred 1, 3, 4 and 5. So basically I can't tell the difference.
Which one do you prefer playing?
the wooden clarinet!
my dumbass thought he was gonna say “i’ll see you guys next wednesday with lizaaa..byeeeeeee” 3:56
😂😂😂
We mixed them up as opposites💀
I only got 6 right. Everything else I flipped. Omg haha

Oof totally had them swapped. I know why I switched them tho. I thought sharper sound would be the metal one so it threw me off. Lol
I didn't play the game because I came to this URL for a different purpose, I'm researching speaker design. The URL I visited prior to this one dealt with organ pipe design ( www.quora.com/Does-the-frequency-of-sound-produced-by-an-organ-pipe-change-with-its-diameter ).
Two facts about organ pipes:
1. They can be made of either wood or metal.
2. "The ratio between the length and the diameter is the main factor determining the “color” of the sound, i.e. the intensity of overtones."
I was interested in the comment that the metal clarinet had a "brighter tone" and "weaker sound" compared to the wood.
Based on this comment I would guess the diameter of the instrument bore of the metal instrument would be less than the bore of the wood instrument.
It's impossible to compare bore size from the video. Is my "guess" is correct?
Good postulation! Sadly I can't measure the bore size but that could be the case. It also could be that the metal clarinet doesn't seal as well and therefore can't resonate as fully in the lower register
@@InstrumentManiac Thanks for your comment. I did a bit more research. Seems the answer is quite straight forward. The Q factor for metal is higher than the Q factor for wood. See: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Q_factor#Acoustical_systems
1:15Lincolnshire Posy?
It sounded as if the metal clarinet lacked the open G note and A… as in it sounded fairly flat or stale compared to the wooden one
Oh do I hear some Parto Parto? YES I DO!
The Broadway Biker has an EXCELLENT ear!
