I lived there for 2 years since I joined to Swiss Guard that protects the pope. It was a very comfortable life, basically Italian culture and great food. Definitely two extraordinary years. I got the official citizenship for this time.

Jake Low That doesn't mean anything. Every US state has its own government, flag, and song, but that doesn't make them their own countries. The Pitcairn Islands have no sovereignty and no country recognizes them as independent, not even themselves. It's not even up to debate like with Kosovo or Palestine, the Pitcairn Islands are very factually not an independent nation on a basic level, and no one argues that.

But if you want to go that way then look at Puerto Rico. They have their own government and use Spanish as a main language. Many would describe them as a country. The fact that Pitcairn was included in this video shows some people do see it as a country. You may disagree but there is an alternative opinion.
Jake Low Puerto Rico definitely has more independence than any states but not a single country recognizes them as one, including themselves, and that's what makes them a territory rather than a country. Same situation with the Pitcairn Islands. It amazes me that anyone tries to argue that either Puerto Rico or the Pitcairn Islands are countries when it's universally accepted that neither of them are.

The Swiss had fame of good guards back in the middle ages so knowing this, Pope Julius II ie the warrior Pope, asked the Swiss goverments to give him some swiss mercenaries as his personal guard.
They had problems with other Italians and government officials becoming corrupt and trying to kill each other for power. So they replaced the standard Vatican guard with highly trained, well equiped, Swiss Catholic mercenaries.

Monaco I find more interesting as a small country. Only 2 sq. km with about 38,400 residents packed in there (much more than that with everyone who commutes from France or Italy to work there).
There's a great little gelato shop just outside the main road of the "Vatican" and a panini shop just across the road from it.

I was confused at first. Vatican city is not a country. Whether recognized internationally or not. It is technically a city-state, if that. It is the head-quarters of a organization know simply as the Catholic Church. It is barely large enough to attain city status let alone national status.
The smallest country in the world is Monaco. At 2 square kilometers. It is a protectorate of the French Republic.
