From Silage to Compost: Unveiling the Harvesting Process | American Falls Farm | FS 22 | ep #11

Welcome back to the American Falls Farm Timelapse. Initially, our focus lies on completing the sorghum harvest. We ready our combine harvester and truck trailer, then head to the field. After wrapping up, we return the equipment to the yard. Transitioning the truck's grain trailer to a flatbed, we proceed to our seed production facility. Here, we load pallets of the finished product, destined for sale.
The acquisition of a forage harvester for maize silage hinges on accumulating the necessary funds in our account. Once achieved, we make our way to the store. Opting for a pre-owned model, the JOHN DEERE 6810 forage combine becomes our choice. Transporting it to our expansive corn field, we equip the truck with a forage trailer and head to the combine.
As operations progress, the need for a loader trailer becomes apparent. Procuring one, we affix it to the combine, facilitating passage through challenging sections of the field without sacrificing forage. The maize chaff is transported to the fermentation tower for unloading. To enhance the market value of the silage, we've established a composting facility.
The allure of converting silage into compost lies in the additional by-product: acetic acid. While compost may fetch a slightly lower price than silage, acetic acid commands a significantly higher value. Thus, we anticipate greater profitability by diversifying our product offerings. The outcome of this strategy will unfold in the upcoming episode of Working on the Farm.
