Do you record the sample pack into the 9-16 drum slots? Or do you record it into the melodic and then copy it to drums? When I try to record it into the melodic it only gets about 12 seconds of the clip and says 'FUL' thanks!

Question about your samples (like your bass and horns): Do you always record them in a certain key or do you match the sample to your chord progression? I'm not sure how the key of the sample affects the scale of the melodic banks.
Codey Sivley Thanks Man! Yes, I always sample my instruments so that they are all in the same key! By having them all in the same key the melodic samples are already in a scale that works with the rest of the samples! Having all the samples in the same key you can also pitch them a full octave up and down too if you wanna switch it up for a section!

I made a .WAV backup file if anybody is interested. I tried to keep it as close to how he had his PO set up. There is also a backup of a setup I find a bit more useful which you can try. Basically just moved the guitar plucks to a drum bank (slot 13) and can be switch out into the melodic bank (slot 4) as needed and the chords are all on the melodic bank (slots 5 to 6). Please do your own research on how to do backups and restoring before you do anything. i don't take any responsibility for you blowing your ears out listening to the .wav files or losing your samples.

@@GarHoover Likewise. Main goal is to make it as easy as possible for people to follow one of the better tutorials out there for the po-33. Also only thing missing from how you had it is the 80s synth is missing as it wasnt in the sample sound and i couldn't pull a good sample from the video but you didn't end up using it anyway.

Do you have a method to the way your WAV sample files are structured, so I can get them over? Not sure how to do it at the moment... Sorry, I realise it's a lot of extra work for you. Yes the samples are not in the same order in the sample WAV but I would suggest sampling in each melodic element into the sample bank that would make it easiest for you to follow along.
The sounds that go in the drum banks like the drums, chords, etc. will be best to keep in their close rapid fire fashion so you can be sure to sample all of the sounds onto the PO-33!

The chord sound in the second pattern stops the previous chord from playing. I can't figure out how to get around that.

How did you get your samples in each individual track? because everytime i sample it goes straight across from 1-8 so how do i get a sample in each button ?
Maserati Sparks Hello! You are are going to need to sample each Melodic sample individually into each melodic bank. The drums, river, and chords will each be recorded into their own drums banks and the PO-33 will chop them up into separate samples in each drum bank! It’s a little bit of a process but it yields fantastic results!

Thank you!!! All I do is plug the PO-33 into the headphone jack on my MacBook and I record the samples I make in Logic onto my PO-33! It's a pretty convenient process!

But.. on the right side.
Is a Mic Jack correct?
And on the left is a Jack to input sounds?
Forgive my lack of PO 33 knowledge.
I just got it.
There wasn't a manual.
The left side is the audio input which can be used to sample audio onto the PO-33. The right side is the audio out for the PO-33 to listen with headphones or with speakers! It is confusing when the onboard mic is next to the audio output rather than the input!

When you record samples what pitch do you use for the original sound?
I was told that A is best as it gives the best overall range of notes on the PO-33.
I generally will sample in "A" or "C" depending on the song! I pick "A" when I want to be working in C Major because the sampled A will go to "pad 13" and all of notes will be the same as playing the white keys on a piano if you ignore pads 4 and 12!

I have a question though, at 5:55 you 'removed the river from the track'. I THINK what you did was play a snippet of the river sound from the same drum bank as the original river sound, stopping the original drum sound since the PO can only play a single sound from the same drum bank. Is that right? How did you create the river sound snippets? I know when you RECORD a sound into a drum bank it will chop it up, but it looks like you copied the original river sound. How?

Gareth Evans Hello! Yes I used a snippet of the river sound to “choke” or stop the river sample from carrying all the way through. I used the trim settings under “FX” to make the sample as long as I wanted and then created a very very short snippet of the sound to choke it using the trim setting as well!

Hello! Each sample should be assigned to its own bank! One shot melodic samples each go in their own melodic bank, all drums are sampled together into one drum bank, all chords are sampled into one drum bank, and the river sample is placed in its own drum bank!

Sorry for the delayed response I was moving across the country! I recorded all of the chords into 1 drum bank and then I needed to trim each of the samples on the PO-33 to make sure they were the full length of the chord and started at the beginning of the chord. It takes a little work but thats the most effective way to handle the chords.

Hello! There are certain parts of the PO-33 that might be require some teaching to understand the basics but I'm sure that once they get the hang of it they would have a lot of fun! The built in mic makes it easy to sample whatever they want and I know I would've enjoyed a PO-33 when I was 12!

Thank You, it is in a drum bank! I trimmed the river sample on one of the pads to a very short snippet to use it as a choke for the river sample, to keep it from trailing!

Emiliano Escalante Gotcha! River sample is in drum bank 14, and the snippet of the river that I use is from “pad 15” in that river drum bank. I place the “pad 15” river snippet on the 15th step in the sequence.

Just subscribed! Great vid. Tried re-creating this on my new PO 33 today but even tho (i think) I copied everything you did. My drums sound slightly out of time? Why would that be happening?
I’ve tried re-trimming my drum samples but it hasn’t had much of an effect
Re-trimming the drums is a very finicky process. I always start at the end of the sample and keep bringing the start point further and further to the beginning of the sample so that I never have any silence when the pad is triggered. I would also check your swing. That may be affecting the rhythm of your drums, hold bpm and turn the left knob to adjust it, I normally set mine to S04 or S05!

You need to adjust the length of the sample. Go into trim mode, and adjust the length of the sample to its full length and it will continue play after it is triggered!
Gar Hoover thanks! New to PO here. I still can't get it. I put the sample to it's full length, and let's say I trigger it on step 1. It still doesn't loop and stops around the step 8. Does it mean that I need a sample that would last the whole 16 steps?
Yes getting a longer sample would work, or you could retrigger the sample on step 8 or 9 to give the the background sound a little rhythm to it! Or you could lower the pitch of the sample and it will play longer!

I'm following every step, but when bass, chords and drum are playing, i can not ad the plug sound and i don't get why, because its three layers.
Are Kick and snare maybe overlapping, so the PO thinks it is four layer?

Hello! If you only have three separate samples playing you should be ok! But you might have other sample from a previous pattern that are trailing into the new pattern with 3 samples causing some of the samples in the “drum banks” to cut out. Make sure that your samples are finished at the end of a pattern. Melodic samples can have the the length adjusted by holding the note that it sequenced and turning the left knob, but for “drum bank” samples you will need to adjust the length of the sample in trim mode!

Great video but i have a question. Can you load the sample of a single note and build chords with it like pressing 3 or 4 buttons at the same time?
Or maybe it could be possible to sample all the chords of a certain key and make a progression with them
Unfortunately each melodic track is monophonic but you can have four voices playing on the PO-33 at once. So to make chords you would need to sequence each note of a chord on a different track but if you made a 4 note chord you would have no space for any other sounds.
Normally I have 2 “melodic” tracks and 2 “drum” tracks. One drum track is actual drum track and the other drum track I use to trigger chords! As you said in your follow up question, I picked 5 or 6 chords from a scale that will work well together and sample them all into my drum track and trim each one to an individual pad in the drum track so I can have them all be triggered! It works really well and I often come up with progressions I would write on my keyboard!

I don't understand how you're choking the sound at 5:00. Did you copy it to a drum pad? If so, how is it choking the melodic pad?
The river sample is in a drum bank. I extended the sample on one pad so that it holds out once it is triggered and then I use a small snippet of the river sample from another pad to choke the sample so it doesn’t carry on!

I want to make a lo fi beat too , so I got my PO137 (which is a Rick and Morty version of PO35) , but I can't layer things that much like you. I can only make a drum beat layer and one layer of melodic stuff , is it the limitation of PO137(or PO 35)?

I do not own a PO-35, so I do not know the limitations of it. From what I heard people perform on the PO-35, it seems that you can have the drums and one melodic sample at a time. I wish I could help!

Hey Gar Hoover, i am pretty new to the PO 33 (got it 2 days ago). To get familar with it i wanted to build the song along with your tutorial. However i am not able to get your samples correctly into my PO. When i am recording the first 16 samples from your file into my drum bank, the PO slices the chords into more of one pieces so that i have the first chord sliced into 7 pieces or so. Do i really have to trim each of those samples by hand?
Hello! Congrats on the PO-33! I would make sure to load only the drums into one drum bank, the chords into another drum bank, the river sound into another drum bank. The longer the sample is, the more of a challenge the PO-33 has with distributing it equally across each of the 16 pads. Unfortunately, especially with Chords, the PO-33 still fails to distribute across the pads equally. Which requires manual trimming which can be very annoying.
My tip with manual trimming is to find the beginning of the samples by going from right to left and getting as close to the beginning of the sample as possible without reaching the gap of silence before the sample. It's better to lose a little of the beginning transient of the sample than to have it a delay and be out of time because of silence before the sample.

Hi. I'm new to the KO, and I'm confused as to how you separate those drum sounds that are packed so tightly together. This seems waaaaaay too precise for the trim function!
Hello! I packed the drum samples tightly together so that when you hold record on a drum bank they were all record in quickly and the PO 33 will detect the transients and place them on the pads. Sometimes there will be clicks at the end of some of the samples but it is easy to remove the ending portion of the sample on each pad by trimming it! I hope that this helps!

The samples are one extended wave file. Do you have to split them up in an editor before putting them on the PO-33? Confused
One approach is to pause and play the sound file as you record the different sample types into the different banks. But if you wanted you could load it into an editor or DAW but that’s additional work. One Shot notes go in Melodic Banks on the PO-33. All chords are recorded together into a drum bank on the PO-33. All drum sounds are recorded into another drum bank on the PO-33. The river also is sampled into a drum bank on the PO-33!

start recording on the (external) device and then press write + sound + play to transmit data.
So anyone (including me :)) could restore that afterwards without any hassle (like cutting and arranging samples) to their PO using restore procedure
press write + sound + record to enter receive mode and then press play on the device to send data

P.P.S I've spent like 2 hours and 7 different sound editors on Android to transfer samples with no luck :(

@@hdavidagmailcom I come across the question by accident, I also spend a lot of time on Data Transfer with PO33, here are some quick tip: use Line-in to connect PO33 into computer, put PO vol at "9" , when transfer data, make sure it is recording a stereo .Wav file at 44Hz. and finally, put your .wav data file on to an icloud and play the file via an iphone at 80% volume in to PO33 for transfer the data back on to it for restoring the backup. why? because this is the only way the Data won't read as error. not sure why I can't just play back through my computer via headphone jack... but this this is one way I know it works. also one more thing: make sure you don't overload the PO33 with a lot of data, sounds, and samples. I found out if you do that, the Data .wav gets longer than 4minute 12 sec, the data won't be able to go back to a PO33 completely the receiver PO will display "ERR" before the transfor ends ( the last bit of your sample in the last sound bank won't be there). good luck.

Hello! You can use a 3.5 mil. to 1/4 inch cable or a converter if you want to connect it to your scarlett. I use a 1/4 inch cable with a 3.5mil. converter to plug my PO-33 into my interface.
