  • Hans Zimmer's Dune soundtrack is one of the albums I just play over and over again, especially after seeing Dune 2. There's this theme that goes all over the place and just wipes the sand from your ears. It has huge sounds and it's not easy to figure out what the notes are doing. I already researched it a few months ago and I've been using the Dune scale in many previous videos. Real musicians have identified it as a 'double harmonic' scale (a bit like Arabic) with a touch of 'Phrygian dominant'. They all agree it's special but ultimately these notes come from the 12-tone system we all use. But maybe that's not entirely true. I've been trying to figure out the theme and I am under the impression it's a scale spanning two octaves instead of one.
    This basically eliminates all scales and quantizers we often use, except Instruo's new Dail quantizer. It can span three octaves.
    It's now 'officially' my favorite utility for 2024 and I absolutely love it. The Dune scale is a great use case. The score is recreated for educational purposes, monetization is off. But I also did this video for myself, to walk in the footsteps of someone I deeply admire. Hans Zimmer's music isn't difficult, we can all play it with 2 or 4 fingers. I don't think he's a genius, he's more like us, modular people. The difference is, he's having fun for a living and he managed to turn it into a genuine art and skill. He's absolutely brilliant in doing what he loves most.
    I always find it weird when UA-cam doesn't claim copyright when movie scores are used. They're not exactly creative commons. I used the score for educational purposes and monetization is off. I know you're watching this, Hans! I hope you'll live forever.

    "Most of us can handle two voices in our rack..." And I looked over and counted 14 analog VCOs. The thing is, they are combined. FM and ring modulators suck up waveforms to produce more waveforms. A modular synthesizer is a cauldron of sound, waiting to be mixed. Some things don't come to life with just a solitary saw wave, you need a storm to bring a creation to life. The cables are not a tangle to hell, but threads of rope to heaven.

      Now that would be a HUGE one note drone you could use as a sample :).

    Fantastic. Gear doesn't matter, what's important is experimenting and finding new sounds and techniques. A great quote I heard on another channel is 'gear is just a mode of transport, music is the destination'.
    Also for anyone that uses VCV there's a 9 octave quantiser (!!!) called Nonaquant, from DanT's collection. 😉

    Hans is no mere mortal.
    This one was quite tasty.
    I've long wondered what all those black and white sticks on synthesizers were for. If I learned anything about music I fear it would lead me down a dark path. I like to learn, though. I would risk learning some music. I don't have any way to afford lessons or know any musicians, though. I suppose UA-cam will be my one and only professor. I do know that there are 12 semitones between octaves. I don't think that bit will get me very far, though. I am going to walk across the street, as soon as I hit enter on the keyboard, to the Redbox machine and see if I can rent Dune. Lastly I think Phrygian is a great name for a pet turtle. I don't have a turtle, though, so you guys can use it if you want.

    The Shakmat Bard Quartet allows the creation of up to eight chord progressions per preset and channel. These chord progressions are CV controllable via the _Harmony_ input. The _Transpose_ input can be set to octave mode. It might be a bit more complicated than the _dàil_ (I don't own the latter), but the Bard should be able to handle a Dune scale as well. It also provides four quantizers simultaneously.

    I know I might sound repetitive, but I truly admire your dedication in spending hours and hours thinking and editing. What's even more admirable to me, though, is your humility. It's incredible to read phrases where others might be proclaiming themselves as expert "composers of soundtracks", but you, instead, share what you know and not only leave room for what you don't know, but also simplify without boasting something that I find truly remarkable.
    Sometimes I believe it's harder to communicate and teach than to be a musical genius.
    To me, you're one of the greats... the greatest among those who make videos to share knowledge.
    And I say this with total honesty and sincerity.
    THANK YOU

    I read somewhere as a tip for beginning artists that they should find two of their favourite works from two different artists, and then try to make a work that combines what you like in these works. Easier said than done I thought, but I realized then that that was what I had been doing in my earlier years as an art student. Trying to copy works, styles or techniques, out of curiosity, playing around, as a joke, and in order to understand. Years later, when someone put a piano in my studio for "short storage", I ended up learning notations during a process of trying to understand what Philip Glass is doing. I found out during this process that this is not the kind of music I like to make. Very fun and healthy to play, but, anyway, this is not how I met your mother as I most likely never did, but why I'm here, on this page in Eurorack Land.
    The point to all this though is don't be to serious, don't forget to play.

    Hey man, .. great topic. And, .. your speak over this video, is much appreciated.
    It wasn't that long ago, that I thought that these double harmonic scales, weren't organized officially .. *sigh* .. it's so much handier having the whole octave spacing set, available, to use. And, there's a the Double Harmonic modes, too .. example: Oriental .. the 5th Double Harmonic scale .. intriguing, intriguing ..
    That series of 3 (total) 1/2 steps in a row .. just that chain of pitches, evokes powerful emotions.
    Don't have a Dail .. but, this is inspiring ideas .. train Marbles (I've never tried this, yet) .. or throw in this scale's pitches, into Beads buffer .. you know .. or, break down, and get a Dail.
    Thank you

    Great video, I'm a big Zimmer fan and I'm constantly amazed at how simple his melodies and themes can be but they also sound so huge. I had a go myself at a desert soundscape (Dune and Zimmer inspired). Elmyra 2 and Hydrasynth doing their part. Mesa from Bladerunner 2049 is a fav track. I love the quick litle filter sweep before the melody kicks in. Dune is another masterpiece - fanboying now so I'll stop!!!

    Try putting the Dune Scale into Marbles. “Playing” the length; and recording the MIDI output into the DAW through VCMC. My personal favorite way of getting idea hooks.

    • @CinematicLaboratory
      @CinematicLaboratory  21 день тому

      I programmed it in Marbles a few months ago, but got the distribution wrong. I'll give it another try with the 'spread' over two octaves as shown in the last part of the video. So less notes instead of the full scale.

      @@CinematicLaboratory Haha, I totally understand! I saw in your other video that you said that the Instruo Arbhar could turn the Mother-32 into polyphony. Is that true? You can play chords etc..?

    • @CinematicLaboratory
      @CinematicLaboratory  16 днів тому +1

      @@alexandermontagnet3361 Check out my Arbhar Advanced video if you wish. Arbhar's grains are polyphonic (lots of them) so if you trigger grains one at a time in a chord, and have a big grainsize, you get something that's really close to polyphony. This may not work when there are no milliseconds between notes but I can't play that tight :).
