Dang .. I've never been to the Gulf side of Florida, I've been to Fort Lauderdale, Jupiter, Dania/Hollywood, and The Keys, of course, several times much different water. I met a couple and their kids in Lake Powell about two years ago they were from the Gulf side (Tampa Bay) they were telling me about the water and how warmer it was then the Atlantic side. I compared the Southern California portion of the Pacific Ocean to the South Florida Ocean waters and mentioned, that ocean water out there is/was not refreshing whatsoever and they proceeded to inform me that on the Gulfside the water is much warmer & murkier and yeah your video proved it true. Thanks for a another quality video and narration, appreciate the effort.
Water is bathtub warm. Even the gulf is. But the gulf waters are clear. The canals behind my house are fed by the Caloosahatchie river which is brownish due to the tannins in the water.
What I saw is normal for Florida boats this time of the year. Especially this year everyone is saying, my experience also, that the barnacles and other growth is much more severe. I would also be careful using electric compressor air for any length of diving time. I use a standard 80 cu ft tank filled at the scuba shop and that way I know I am breathing ultra clean micro filtered air. At that depth an 80 will last several hours and deliver the air you need as you work hard.
New subscriber here. Nicely done videos. Planning similar trip for 1st time Winter 2023-24, but making it an annual trip from the northern Chesapeake Bay. Water is normally brackish so many boaters don't coat their underwater metals. But, this summer the rain drought increased the salinity and almost all our powerboat neighbors hauled their boats as they too, could not go on plane and some had difficulty moving out of their slip. Worst in 25 years. Running gear was fully covered by barnacles, the cone-shaped ones not the "wormy" ones you had. Fortunately, for us we have been coating our running gear as part of our spring commissioning. I have been using from Home Depot/Lowes Rust-oleum Cold Galvanizing Spray (20oz), which is 98% zinc. At $10/can, a bargain when compared to Pettit Prop Coat Barnacle Barrier. Folks in the ocean side of the Northeast and New England have had great results, including me. It is quite tenacious and had to sand blast my Zeus Pod drives just to try something else. Power sanding takes too long. Returned to Rust-oleum Pettit makes Prop Coat Barnacle Barrier, which also has a very high zinc content. It costs $36-40 for a 20oz can. The story goes the company which owns Pettit also owns Rust-oleum. This is confirmed. Whether the two paints are the same formulation with a marine label and equivalent pricing...Hmmm? Also looking forward to your long-term review of Hull Shield. Keep up the good work.
@@AdventuresofHappyOurs As with all coatings, sanding base metal to bare, if possible. My props are stainless. Pods are bronze. No issues. I suggest looking at the Pettit labels to see what metals are safe. Since Cold galvanizing is zinc as well, it is relevant. If your props have never been conditioned and prop scanned, it is worth the investment. Ask for a satin finish, which allows the paint to adhere better. Two coats. Annually, sand with 80 grit to remove the seasons muck and rough the surface. Spray another coat.
I had a boat at the mouth of the CT River, and it was horrible some years. I finally moved upriver into fresh water. The first time I cleaned it I didn't have gloves and my hands were cut up bad. Nice Job.
Tom awesome video, always doing maintenance. Keeping your boat shipshape. Next adventure could be The Admiral diving under and scraping some barnacles!
Nice video… pretty ambitious to take that job on. When we bought our boat the previous owner had a diver come out like once a month. Keeping it on a trailer makes maintenance so much easier. I had to use acid to get the barnacles off. They secrete a cement that holds with 5,000 psi! I envy your boat but not your barnacles…
Depending on your area, get the highest copper content possible. That's a lot of growth for 1 month. especially since you use your boat frequently. I personally like Petit brand, the problem is that these paint companies a moving towards eco friendly paints that are expensive and not as efficient as the copper based ablative. Which means more haul outs to maintain.
Hi Happy Ours, now I live in a colder climate and own a yacht but we had a similar issue with our propeller. Now don’t laugh but we stopped using proprietary antifouling and changed over to plain egg white. We lifted our boat out a few weeks ago and found absolutely no growth of tube worms or barnacles, it honestly works. You’ll need to apply about 6 to 8 coats of egg white on your prop for it to work, give it a try👍
The best thing to use for scraping barnacles and not scraping the anti fouling paint is a window scraper that we used for scraping windows that were frosted over in the winter time
In the summer months we had to have a diver do the bottom every 2 weeks in Longboat key. I tried prop speed it lasted as long as the spray can anti foul paint . I think with you physically cleaning them during the hot months it’ll be fine. thanks for the vid.
Gotta do this once a season to swap out the shaft zincs on my Sundancer 360, they make it to August and are heavily corroded at that point. I have a new dock at my marina, hopefully that makes a difference. Either way I'm saving $750 on the haul out. I bet you get more growth down there in the warm Florida water!
Ive made my living as an owner operator commercial fisherman for 30 yrs, if one of my boats looked like that after 6 months I would be extremely pissed off. They didnt prep the surfaces before they put that bottom pain on. Lots of people making money off storms.😢
Where do you boat out of? When I was in Maryland, my bottom paint lasted forever and worked great. But, when I moved to south Florida, I started to wonder if I even had bottom paint on my boat.
The Caloosahatchee and it's tribs and canals in this area are notorious for some of the worst environments for bottom paint. It is truly disgusting water for multiple reasons, most of which are man made. People have mentioned bull sharks and gators but I would be most concerned about the bacterias in the CC canal system. Dozens of people get infections and illnesses from the CC Fort Myers area beaches. We no longer allow our pets to wade in these waters.
Tom Great video. I enjoy them. I looked at the hull Shield videos. They have a specificProp Shield system separate than the hull shield. Why didn’t you use that in addition to the hull shield.? Good luck and enjoy the water.
@@AdventuresofHappyOurs A friend told us that he goes snorkeling by his dock to catch lobsters and he has never been attacked, but last we visited my buddy hooked a small tarpon that went ballistic out of the water, drawing the attention of two massive bulls, that eventually made it an afternoon snack.

Electrolysis is the issue. There are more waterfront homes in the Cape than anywhere in the World probably a wire or many wires contacting the water. The only solution is a boat lift!
@@AdventuresofHappyOurs I'll do some research and let you know but we kept our boat at a marina that had this issue and the same thing happened. In Florida bottom needs to be cleaned every 3 weeks. Prop speed works well. This is not unusual for a Florida boat where the water temp is high.

They didn’t mention using a different product. May be a gasket insulating the transmission bell housing from shaft. Who knows.

9 - One in each shaft, 2 on bow thruster, 2 on stern thruster, one on each trim tan and one large plate zinc on the stern.
