The main reason I picked this song is because of the bass and drums throughout. That's usually the main thing I focus on when I think of groove in metal, much like how groove in hip hop and R&B seems to be focused on the bass of those songs. Groove is also one of the main things that connects fans of both genres, if I wanted to get someone who only listens to hip hop into metal I would introduce them with a track like this. I also consider Cult Of Luna to be extremely groovy, and most bands in the stoner metal / sludge scene which is a direct descendant from blues.
Also if you like this I would suggest checking out Dvne's whole album Etemen Ænka, which this song is from. Every song in it stands out and has a unique sound, and they're able to bring influences from different genres together really well. The song right after this one is basically a prog track with mostly clean vocals.

Wow! Given this is my only experience with them I would never have guessed they'd have a song with mostly cleans :) Def gotta give the album a listen.

I LOVE their latest album. Was album of the year for me, despiste Carcass, Cannibal Corpse, Gojira and others having released bangers as well.

Oh, this was good. Never heard of them before. I have to give them a good listen later because this song was very promising.

Hell yeah. I've been waiting for you to check these guys out cause I thought you would probably really like them. About to start the video and find out.
    My thoughts:
The vocalist/guitarist on the right does mostly cleans I believe. He seemed to use less cleans in this live version than he does in the studio (or I may be thinking of another song). So normally there's a bit more separation in the vocal techniques.
The riffing live here feels a bit more squashed too for some reason. One of my favorite things about their studio work is their constantly undulating riffing which you don't really catch as much here.
lyrically you would need to study their albums Asheran and this one for a while. They're both concept albums and this one is a prequel to their last album "Asheran". HeavyBlogIsHeavy has a writeup of both that are well worth a read if you like epic fantasy.
Wish you would have listened to Crimson Path, Viridian Bloom, or Thirst from the previous album "Asheran". Thirst is probably closest to this one but still has a bit more of a defined song structure. I feel like this song was pretty meh for you which is disappointing.

Thanks for all of this info. I'll be sure to check out more DVNE in the future, possibly one of those three you recommend.

I'm hearing some Hawkwind there in the vocals at times. I'd love to see them play live in a venue with decent sound and lighting.

Really loved this one. Immediately went to buy their discography, which isn't a lot. Definitely strong post-metal influence, but I was pleasantly surprised by how proggy, melodic, and varied it got. Unlike, say, Cult of Luna they aren't just playing for a massive, climactic payoff, but instead they kept changing it up with riffs and melodies that often felt like variations on the main riff. Awesome stuff. However, this wouldn't come fast to mind when thinking of groove. I never really found myself "grooving" with this as opposed to really enjoying the riffs, atmosphere, melodies and solo.

I was going to make the exact comment you made around 28 minute mark. I have a similar definition to yours ie: involuntary head bobbing, foot tapping etc. I didn't get much of that from this song.

I've been in a few conversations about groove this week and it's interesting just how varied people's definition of it is.

If I may recommend something similar, check out MINDROT and their song "In Silence" from their 1998 album "Soul". If not in your channel, then perhaps when you have some ten minutes of spare time.
Another one I could recommend is a Finnish post-metal band Crib45 - "Into The Abyss" or "Borderlines"

your most watched videos are metal reactions. do you feel like less people will watch your videos if you reacted to something less heavy/obscure?

    • @CriticalReactions
      @CriticalReactions  2 роки тому +4

Certainly. Some of my favorite reactions (both analyses and songs) have had much smaller views. Particularly my Creator Request songs. I've gone out and purchased albums from these smaller bands because I loved their music so much but those videos are unlikely to get more than 100 views.
More palatable, mainstream songs are guaranteed to bring in more views. But as someone who doesn't really care about the metrics too much I do what I want to do -- and that's bringing attention and musical appreciation to songs/bands that are less popular or get less circulation in the reaction circles.
