This was my favourite arcade game back in 1987 when I first went to Blackpool on holiday. I couldn’t get enough of it and will always have a special place in my heart. I love Outrun. ❤️
This game was where I learned to slam the gear into first gear to brake when you started to drift in the bends... Still drive my Ferrari like this now.
Outrun, like Doube Dragon, Golden Axe and a few others was another arcade classic that helps to lauch home entertainment systems. Sega Master Systems was powered by this game. Mind blowing at the time.
I only played a stand-up cabinet version, must have been quite an experience with the full cabinet. Thanks for the video. I learnt a lot from this vid - especially the history bit at the beginning. I appreciate what you're doing here. Respect!
Galaxy Force 2's moving cab was incredible. Too bad it was prone to mechanical failures. I only got to play it once or twice @ my local arcade, as it was nearly always broke-down.
As a kid when this came out I had always said that I would own an Outrun machine. Fast forward to 1998 I finally had the chance to buy one for $150 from a nice lady who's kids had grown up and moved out years prior, so no one used it anymore. Replaced the flyback, rebuilt the monitor chassis and it's been rock solid since. This game was always a holy grail for me and I'm glad to have it in my arcade collection. We joke that when I die I'll probably be buried in it, or with it Lol.
The greatest part of the GBA compilation is that they work at 60 frames. That made it instantly better than almost every other home port and you could play it anywhere. Nowadays I play Outrun through the Cannonball engine which has been ported to several systems, like the Wii. It is a great way to play, 60 FPS (although you can change it if you want), and a good set of options and new modes, like being able to play every single route in one long driving session!
The standard sitdown cabinate (flat back chair)you say did not move actually did move the difference between that and the other sitdown is the chair which featured built in speakers.
I was blown away the first time I saw this in an arcade; the graphics, music, and speed worked together to provide an unforgettable experience. No other driving game has had quite the same effect on me since.
I’m surprised that the Amiga version was as well-received in this video as it was. For an Amiga, those sound effects are pretty bad (that skid noise and engine noise in particular - ugh!), and the border colours are pretty nauseating at times. The _Lotus_ games showed that the Amiga was more than capable of a decent car game, whereas US Gold continue their run of poor arcade conversions with _OutRun._
I used to have the deluxe cabinet a few years ago. Very fun but also very big. So I swaped it with a high speed pinball. The outrun cabinet went on a tour with other arcade games. I would like to have a stand up cabinet some day..
The best way to play Outrun on the PC was on a Tandy-1000. You see, the Tandy 1000 had the same sound hardware as the Sega Master System. So when games were optimized to utilize it, you got a much richer sounding game than normal MS-DOS PCs did. Thankfully DosBox can be easily configured to run in Tandy-1000 mode. You set the machine type to Tandy and make sure the Tandy sound option is turned on in the config file. The way I do the former is I have two lines in DosBox's config telling it what system I want it to be, with a # in front of the one I'm not currently wanting to play, because hastags render any line a "comment". You can easily toggle stuff this way.
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries That Tandy was something else. It was a kind of hand me down from my uncle. Not all games supported Tandy graphics and sound, but the ones that did were a real treat.

Loved driving in the car of Turbo Outrun back in the arcades of Salthill, Galway city....back in the 80s 90s. Sega Ages released the arcade version of Outrun on the Nintendo switch last year.......among other classics.....hopefully Turbo will get released......cos the Megadrive/Genesis version lacked the original sounds/voices and feel of the arcade
The game was never released in North America so I was only able to play it later on in emulator. Turbo would be fantastic on the switch and hopefully it does get released

I loved this game. The music was so iconic and still great today. They remixed the music on the Japanese Saturn version (in addition to the original Aracde music) and the Musical Sound Shower is SOOOO amazing. I still listen to it in my playlist today. The US did eventually get a release of this game from Working Designs (under the SPAZ name yeah that's a whole other thing....) There was an updated sequel that came out called Outrun Online Arcade. Ok. One of my favorites growing up. I recently, about 3 weeks ago, played it via the in-game arcade in the Sega title Fist Of The North Star: Lost Paradise. I was, unfortunately a bit off-put by the graphics of Out Run. I feel it may somehow not look as good as it should, or as it does here in the vid. I'll have to check on it. @@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries I assume it's partly due to not having played it in a long time, and possibly....possibly....the emulation not being up to snuff? When it was released it completely outmatched any game in the arcades. It's surprising that it didn't have a NES considering that it appeared in so many platforms.
I'm kinda surprised by that too now, thinking about it. I get why there's no SNES version, because Sega had changed by that point and wasn't going to let it's biggest rival have it's stuff... But the NES era was different...
Nintendo actually had ads in magazines trying to compete Rad Racer with the arcade Outrun!!! No kidding! While Rad Racer was fun and very similar to Outrun in some ways, there was no competition. Arcade Outrun was far the better game! I might still have a magazine with that ad!

Outrun is why the Ferrari Testarossa is my Lizard's (Let's just leave it at Mascot) choice of vehicle. While I'm great with the sequel (Outrun 2) I could never get good with the oriignal, Outrun turbo, or the many spin-offs on the SMS. :(
Whoa! Incorrect sir! Working Designs DID bring out the 3 in 1 to the US with Afterburner, Outrun & Space Harrier! It was the first and ONLY Sega Ages US game release in the State from WD of all things! Plus, the manual actually mentions the extra arranged music tracks for Outrun! BUT they did not have the room to add the music in the final product, but the manuals were already printed! I remember being a prominent member at the ye old Working Designs Message Board (WDMB) where I complained about that and Vic sincerely apologized and explained what happened. And they say stuff on the internet never goes away... then bring back my user name, posts and all the conversations we had from back then! Or my Microsoft free beta website! All gone.
Outrun the original and the 2000 game NEVER get old! Love Outrun and always will. Here's another weird tidbit. Many years ago got into it with another fan here. We were going to the beach. A gas station had the game. It was the SIT Down version! I actually played it, and when the car crashed for a split second I saw the guy and girl stand up and start walking to the car!!!! For the PC, though, check out Cannonball Out Run - it needs the arcade ROMs but is an enhanced version with original gameplay, 60FPS and different camera angles.
OMG I absolutely LOVED that game as a kid.
You and me both my friend
Here's a random fact: I've just subscribed so there's no out running your content 👌👌👌👌✋✋✋✋
LOL, thank you so much. :-)
Great video. The standard sit down cabinet did move left and right.
He said that (for the deluxe sit down). The standard one did not.

M2 did this classic great justice. Funny it took a handheld to deliver a true experience. 👍
Anyways, another fun video man. :)
Thank you very much. I think the graphics still hold up. Probably my all-time favorite arcade racing game
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries I assume it's partly due to not having played it in a long time, and possibly....possibly....the emulation not being up to snuff? I'm looking forward to trying it again when I get home today. The arcade in Fist Of The North Star also has Space Harrier, and Hang On, and the Sega Mark Iii version of Fist Of The North Star is playable in your hideout.
I love your videos.
This game is amazing, i got it on Switch Lite back around when i got it, costed me 5 bucks and i have tons of hours in it.
Don't know if any arcades in Holland have it though
Five bucks is a great deal for this classic game
Nice adult movie reference "On Golden Blonde"! Ginger Lynn and Christy Canyon...that was back when they ripped off mainstream movie titles for adult films
LOL, it took over a year but somebody finally got the reference :-)
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries You know everyone is going to go find it to watch now. I remember seeing this and Poonies (Goonies) in the adult room at the local video store.
Sega made a PSP copy and I was introduced to the game this way, I’m considering getting a Sega game gear or genesis emulator for my Android and downloading either.
Yes, the PSP version was really good.
Why not emulate the original arcade rom on your Android? Just get Outrun.zip from here.

I love the OutRun series!
So do I :-)
When it was released it completely outmatched any game in the arcades.
It's surprising that it didn't have a NES considering that it appeared in so many platforms.
I'm surprised to considering we had various other Sega conversions such as fantasy zone and alien syndrome
Classic game. Outrunners was fun too
I used to love outrunners. I had every intention of including all of the out run games in the video but they were just too much to cram into one episode
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries awesome video none the less. Thank you for making these awesome videos. I know they take time to make. They keep getting better and better.
@@PuertoR0ck Thanks, I'm glad you like them. Each video takes between 10 and 20 hours to make. Thanks for watching
Definitely one of my favorite arcade games! 😎 🚗 💨
This is probably my all-time favorite racer
Does anyone else here love the 3DS port?
Yes I had it, the 3D effect was really good
Fun game, great vid. God job!
Thanks, please subscribe if you haven't already
Outrun is why the Ferrari Testarossa is my Lizard's (Let's just leave it at Mascot) choice of vehicle.
While I'm great with the sequel (Outrun 2) I could never get good with the oriignal, Outrun turbo, or the many spin-offs on the SMS. :(
I never cared for the spinoffs except for turbo outrun but I did love outrun 2
You are Thee Best UA-camr, Rock-On!!
fun fact. ive never been able to beat this game. ever! always made it to the second to last level.
A good version - for me - is also the XBOX360 (or PC) Outrun Coast2Coast
I love that version as well
I propped up the Sega corporation with my fifty cent contributions to Outrun in the arcade
You and me both my friend
My life is officially complete if I own a deluxe Out Run game
That would be fantastic
Outrun was a fun game back in the day
Outrun on the Genesis is my favourite home port
It is really well done
The MS-DOS version was good, but I missed the crash sounds.
So did I at least the road scrolled like it should
Loved this game. Great video
Thank you
Arcade Projects represent!!!
I have NEVER seen that animation since. And someone told me it had to be a bootleg version?
Thanks for the correction
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries my enjoyment of Outrun is either on par with yours or might surpass your own... 😋 you'd think I've had gotten better at the game as long as I've played it. The Genesis version looks great on the Nomad too! Still think the Genesis version of Frogger was meant for the Nomad...over the TV. And when you thought Outrun 2 Coast 2 Coast didn't come out for the Xbox (not you personally but many didn't think it did)... I found it online and bought it! Backward compatible with the 360 but actually does NOT look as well as it does on the original Xbox...
Hey loving the videos! Keep it up!
I'm actually playing Out run on my wrist watch.... a Garmin Fenix 5xplus.... runs really well.. 💪😁
That's awesome, Let's hear it for technology :-)
This was a good one.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it . Please subscribe if you haven't already
Loved Outrun! Music tracks were awesome. Had the town's high score. Hated Pole Position, though.
The music is such an iconic part of the game similar to spy Hunter
