Choosing to interpret a remake of something from 20 years ago as being a carbon copy of the original thing is always an unobtainable expectation. Silent hill 2 was my favorite game but even for this remake I am being cautious not to guide my preferences based on if it emulates an identical experience to the one I already have. I think the only thing that matters at the end of the day for this game is if it executes the core tenets of the original game well, and from the things we've seen I don't think it's far off, which is appreciable.
I think one of the most frustrating aspects of discussing the Silent Hill 2 Remake is that you can't bring up Bloober team's sleazy history as a reason to be apprehensive about the game. If people want to like something, I get they'll ignore anything negative or toxic or outright bad for the industry and audiences as a whole. But Bloober literally has a history of plagarism, awful handling of mental health topics, and they even patented a game design element that isn't even original to them. (They even responded to criticism of the patent by being incredibly condescending and dismissive.) I've seen people boycott media, especially games, for false narratives or minor fixable issues like texture pop in. So the fact that people will scream about every other game /company and then pre-order Silent Hill 2 Remake and die on this hill, is just so frustrating.
Together, we will turn, customers? into fanatics! Products? into obsessions! Em-ploy-ees? into ambassadors! and brands? into religions! Everybody give yourself a big hand! Our benevolent overlords couldn't do all this great work without each and every one of us helping them along the way!
The "I'm not your Mary" doesn't land but if this was their first trailer, it would have gone over a lot better. Even though they're recreating the original trailer shot for (somewhat) shot, at least the tone and understanding of what genre Silent Hill is, is showing. The gameplayer trailer miscommunicated that they had action placed at the front vs story and it was a huge blunder. It's tough to read the latest trailer as "Listen guys we want to make this right!" when it could easily be "We messed up! Quick, play into the nostalgia!!"
I can tell you right now that they fucked up the Maria Prison scene; the fact that she doesn't change her voice when she talked to James as if she is 'Mary' is pretty bad. You can tell that the voice doesn't change because of how she later reacts to James question "Aren't you Maria?" after her little monologue 4:30 - Sample of he Monologue 9:20 - James' Question Way too similar with no differences
People who defend the remake version say her voice does change - she just starts off as Maria and by the end of the dialogue, she's Mary. Personally, I don't hear it. It just sounds like this version of Maria throughout.

The Silent Hill subreddit is one of the worst and dumbest. It's littered with horribly dated memes and very inane theories. I had to leave that subreddit because the cringe was unbearable. I love Silent Hill and implore any of you who do as well to avoid the subreddit dedicated to it.
You are speaking the truth. That subreddit is insufferable. The members can not take the lightest of criticisms or disagreements. I've been a long time fan of the series and that subreddit is the worst fan group.
Just avoid any subreddit, really. The only one I don't mind is the Twin Peaks one. I'm a big fan (as you can tell from my pfp), and that community isn't absolute cancer like a big majority of subreddits.

My first miniature was pretty good, too! (If I may say so.) It's because halfway through the lesson, I stopped listening to the teacher and just went off on my own. I also took 10 hours just for one miniature. I think, generally, people take a lot of shortcuts while painting miniatures because they want to paint the entire box as quickly as possible. I've been painting miniatures for a year or so now. I've bought a total of 40 miniatures, and I've only painted about 10. lol i also like to come up with my own color schemes and whatnot. I want some to look new and shiny, and I like others to look more beaten-up and weathered. Anyways, reddit does fucking suck! lol i hope you and your partner are still having fun painting! 💕
Why is anybody still acting surprised when Redditors fail to engage with disagreements or criticism like adults? Agreed. Some of the voice acting in the original was really awkward and stilted, but Maria in that scene was some of the best acting the original had to offer. It's like this new actress doesn't even understand what the scene is going for.
There's so much i don't like about this trailer. The scene with maria in the original was framed in a way so as to make it almost feel like a dream. The bright white lighting with the blurred imagery lent to this aesthetic and feeling and even made the animation look disturbingly life like at times but here everything is so clear and polished that I can clearly see how cartoonish it all looks and it takes away from the subtle uncanny feeling of the original. And it makes the way Maria's va delivers her lines feel very jarring and out of place.
I do agree. I would have made it like on top of every single note DREAM LIKE EXPERIENCE. I kinda don't like the new VA's because they don't sound bad 😂 I do like a few models -Eddie being my favorite. He looks absolutely fantastic imo- I think the stages and stuff look neat (bugs and glitches to be reviewed once the game is out) however not dirty enough? If that makes sense. Overall I think it's fine. But then again most if not everything was already done for them, they only had to make it pretty
I went from not paying too much attention (mostly listening while doing other stuff) and thinking the trailer was just "eh" to finally realising how much they've destroyed that iconic scene. The severely uncomfortable uncanniness and surreal vibes are just... not there at all? Such a waste. They literally had the best base ever to work with, they only had to modernize the visuals and some VFX and such. But _nah,_ butchering it is.
All konami needed to do was do a faithful rerelease of the first four games for modern consoles. Minimal changes maybe just like minor performance improvements, and whatever else they need to do to get it to run on modern consoles. I'm not sure ofc but i feel like that would be a huge hit. I know I'd buy it at full price in a heartbeat

Something is off when fans are refusing to see their own thing as crapified. It's supposed to be the fans who are taking a series too seriously and nonfans telling them to touch grass. It's normal for fandoms to be cult-like in some way but this is something else.
This is a great point because a few years ago this same fan base was very quick to hold Konami accountable for cancelling Silent Hills and their abusive treatment of Hideo Kojima. Now Konami and Bloober are dangling keys in front of them in the form of a terrible looking remake and they don't care anymore, they're pre-ordering the deluxe edition for early access.

I wanted to like this remake. SH2 is one of my favorite games of all time and despite most remakes being shit I got excited when Ito Masahiro tweeted about being involved. But the old staff must not have much to do with it. Watching scenes from the remake and seeing how they missed critical details as if they didn't understand the original makes me so sad.
I'm gonna disagree with the opinion that this captures the same vibes, if only because the new voice actors (tho most probably whoever directed the VA in general) absolutely failed to capture the nuances the original voices did. There was so much subtext and subtle storytelling in the original performances that is nowhere to be found in these new flat ones. It basically obliterates a whole layer of story complexity that was key in elevating the original from a great horror game to a masterpiece of psychological horror. Just further proof that the people in charge of this project don't really understand it well enough to give it the depth it deserved and had in the first place, and because of that I foresee semi-competent mediocrity at best from this remake. Such a shame.
I literally just finished silent hill 2 with the enhanced edition patch and I loved it so much to the point where I got all 6 endings with speedrunning on easy mode and chainsaw. My heart is broken after I spent a few hours trying to get silent hill 3 to work on my pc :(. I could get the hd collection for like 3 bucks but I really don't wanna play an inferior version of the game
I cannot get past the absolutely awful voice acting in this remake (seen various footage of various scenes - and none of them sound good) For all the grief that the OG game had for the stilted line delivery; that was an intentional choice, and the VAs still did an excellent job conveying the emotions/mindset their characters were in in any given scene, stilted dialogue be damned. This remake, though? They all sound so bland/disinterested - like they're just reading their lines and, at points, sounding like they're rushing through them.
I disagree with Adam slightly that this trailer didn’t have issues, it definitely did they’ve really dropped the ball with Angela and Maria who are so important to this story. I wouldn’t hold it against Adam though he seems like he likes silent hill but has only played them like once or twice but there’s aspects of both of those characters that are very off in the remake so far.

I can see how they could be seen as "fine" for someone not super familiar with the games or with a casual interest in them (maybe because a lot of VA in modern games makes characters sounds like they're bored out of their skulls the whole time) but when compared to the original performances? Oh yeah, I should have pointed out that I was referring to the Mary/Maria and James' performances. I didn't think Angela, Eddie and Laura's original VA was all that great to begin with either (00s cheesy voice acting aside lol), but I still much prefer it to the flat lifeless acting shown on the remake's trailers so far.
I'm honestly surprised Adam didn't think it looked that bad. They took one of the most iconic conversations in that game (Maria) and completely sucked out all the life and unsettling energy out of it. Wish I could watch that and think it doesn't look bad, I'd live a happier life lol

To be fair, Laura's response of 'why should I?' was in response to James saying he's surprised she doesn't have a scratch on her (as she doesn't see the area the same way he does; to her, it's just a normal building.

Longtime silent hill appreciator here. All we can do is react to the trailers they're showing us, and I haven't been impressed so far. The gameplay trailer looked sterile, clunky, and outdated to me. Thanks to Adam for bringing up the potential 'inflated' positive impressions on Reddit, I watched the same thing happen when the amazon fallout show came out in r/fallout-- a space that was once a wealth of opinions on the series became somewhere that only positive opinions of the show were allowed. Every day during the first few weeks of the show's release, there were a half dozen r/fallout posts on the front page of reddit with tens of thousands of upvotes, and most were submitted by brand new accounts with almost no karma before their fallout tv show posts magically blew up. It made me finally realize that Reddit is a major part of marketing at this point for exactly the reasons Adam described-- its easy to recruit people to post and fans still think of many subreddits as 'fan spaces,' not extensions of marketing departments. Its just marketing at this point, abandon all hype until the game actually releases, and don't trust reviews until its been out for a few weeks already.

This trailer was just bad. I feel like the game has garnered a lot of good will in trailers and footage released since this was recorded that has me more hopeful. And Bloober seems to be working with a lot of the criticisms being levelled against it at the time.
The demon's souls remake trailer got criticized for losing a lot of the tone and ambience of the original, and bluepoint actually listened and changed it before release. Now it's known as one of the best remakes out there.

the opening is ass compared to the old one, marias old VA had SO MUCH heart and character, they made her so flat for a character who is supposed to be everything James fantasizes about his wife to be, laura isnt the same at all, Angela looks like a bought asset, eddie looks like louie anderson in bad colored contacts for no reason, they focused on abstract daddy soo much for no reason that it makes me think bloober is doing their abuse fetishization again, all the charm is gone from SH2 its a combat game (and a bad one at that) with sloppy paint over it.
I've always wanted remakes of any SH game. I just can't stand the way a lot of these people are dedicated to treat this remake like it can do no wrong. The dialog, the voice acting is so wrong. The vibe & personality of each character is just wrong. Eddie is the only one they did well. The voice actor actually did well & they designed him really well. The personality & attitudes of the other character tho is just wrong. It sounds like they don't understand their characters or what is the correct tone they should be going for throughout the game. I hope it will be good. I'm just worried this game will treat us like a kid. Holding our hands with Button prompts, Toned down storytelling, censored sensitive topics, you name it. Hopefully they do NOT do that. Hopefully they don't approach this like: "we don't wanna make people too uncomfortable" because this game is meant to make people uncomfortable. If they aren't okay with creating an uncomfortable, inappropriate game then they really picked the wrong team to make a game such as this. I wish the fog was more intense. It could be a lot darker, forcing you to really rely on your flashlight & your radio. It would be cool if they sometimes used dynamic fixed camera angles or gave us the option to turn it on in the settings. I'm okay with them making some changes. There are ways many things can be changed and still hold the same core of this game. I hope they find ways to achieve that. (it is annoying how divided and out of control a lot of people are getting. I wish things weren't so weirdly divided. Then some counter the critical people with a sorta Toxic Positivity. I wish valid criticism could be heard and addressed. It will be nice if things can chill out and we can get back to being able to critique things in a healthy way again lol)

After seeing most of the game, all i can say it could of been a lot worse, there,s no denying the voices are worse in every way, but there's no modern audience crap, Maria by some magic isn't a girl boss and actual act flirtatious towards James, there's even a look at the original costume moment and they don't mock it like Suicide Squad, James actual keeps quite and doesn't basically tell you what to do, the puzzles don't work themselves out after multiple tries, I've seen no major bugs or FPS drops, it's not perfect but like i said it could of been a lot worse.
Saw a short version of this trailer multiple times on the big screen, when i attended a film festival last month. Looked really bad on a screen that large.

I hear akira's melody, but just doesn't have the same feel of the original ost where the original felt calm in places but unnerving in others. This feels bland... Might be because im bias to the original game but the more trailers i see the more soulless (theres a sense of irony there i think) this remake feels. So far the first SH movie kept the original feel of the ost and they only made small tweaks to it. So far this remake is going to flop hard in my eyes.
The acting is so stilted and one note trying to be all like "we're pro actors" that it ends up sounding less interesting and geniune, making the OG sound way better as a result.
Ironically, ever since letting go of any shred of hope that we'll ever get a good Silent Hill game ever again, I've found a perverted joy in watching the franchise spiral into increasingly piss poor reimagining's and the very worst excesses of Triple A business brain rot. It's about as comprehensive and egregious of a fall for _any_ game franchise that I can think of, and now that I'm done being upset with what was done to Silent Hill, there's a morbid fascination to witnessing just how far it's fallen and continues to plummet.

I've seen people boycott media, especially games, for false narratives or minor fixable issues like texture pop in. So the fact that people will scream about every other game /company and then pre-order Silent Hill 2 Remake and die on this hill, is just so frustrating.

Pyro was criticized because he was upset about the changes but forgot Eddies name and called him Benny. Then admitted he never actually played it.
The "I'm not your Mary" doesn't land but if this was their first trailer, it would have gone over a lot better. Even though they're recreating the original trailer shot for (somewhat) shot, at least the tone and understanding of what genre Silent Hill is, is showing. The gameplayer trailer miscommunicated that they had action placed at the front vs story and it was a huge blunder.
It's tough to read the latest trailer as "Listen guys we want to make this right!" when it could easily be "We messed up! Quick, play into the nostalgia!!"

I can tell you right now that they fucked up the Maria Prison scene; the fact that she doesn't change her voice when she talked to James as if she is 'Mary' is pretty bad. You can tell that the voice doesn't change because of how she later reacts to James question "Aren't you Maria?" after her little monologue

The Silent Hill subreddit is one of the worst and dumbest. It's littered with horribly dated memes and very inane theories. I had to leave that subreddit because the cringe was unbearable. I love Silent Hill and implore any of you who do as well to avoid the subreddit dedicated to it.

My first miniature was pretty good, too! (If I may say so.) It's because halfway through the lesson, I stopped listening to the teacher and just went off on my own. I also took 10 hours just for one miniature. I think, generally, people take a lot of shortcuts while painting miniatures because they want to paint the entire box as quickly as possible. I've been painting miniatures for a year or so now. I've bought a total of 40 miniatures, and I've only painted about 10. lol i also like to come up with my own color schemes and whatnot. I want some to look new and shiny, and I like others to look more beaten-up and weathered.

Agreed. Some of the voice acting in the original was really awkward and stilted, but Maria in that scene was some of the best acting the original had to offer. It's like this new actress doesn't even understand what the scene is going for.
There's so much i don't like about this trailer. The scene with maria in the original was framed in a way so as to make it almost feel like a dream. The bright white lighting with the blurred imagery lent to this aesthetic and feeling and even made the animation look disturbingly life like at times but here everything is so clear and polished that I can clearly see how cartoonish it all looks and it takes away from the subtle uncanny feeling of the original. And it makes the way Maria's va delivers her lines feel very jarring and out of place.
I do agree. I would have made it like on top of every single note DREAM LIKE EXPERIENCE. I kinda don't like the new VA's because they don't sound bad 😂 I do like a few models -Eddie being my favorite. He looks absolutely fantastic imo- I think the stages and stuff look neat (bugs and glitches to be reviewed once the game is out) however not dirty enough? If that makes sense. Overall I think it's fine. But then again most if not everything was already done for them, they only had to make it pretty
I went from not paying too much attention (mostly listening while doing other stuff) and thinking the trailer was just "eh" to finally realising how much they've destroyed that iconic scene. The severely uncomfortable uncanniness and surreal vibes are just... not there at all? Such a waste. They literally had the best base ever to work with, they only had to modernize the visuals and some VFX and such. But _nah,_ butchering it is.
After actually going back and rewatching the original scene side by side with this one. The remake is actually a travesty in comparison

This is a great point because a few years ago this same fan base was very quick to hold Konami accountable for cancelling Silent Hills and their abusive treatment of Hideo Kojima. I wanted to like this remake. SH2 is one of my favorite games of all time and despite most remakes being shit I got excited when Ito Masahiro tweeted about being involved. But the old staff must not have much to do with it. Watching scenes from the remake and seeing how they missed critical details as if they didn't understand the original makes me so sad.
I'm gonna disagree with the opinion that this captures the same vibes, if only because the new voice actors (tho most probably whoever directed the VA in general) absolutely failed to capture the nuances the original voices did. There was so much subtext and subtle storytelling in the original performances that is nowhere to be found in these new flat ones. It basically obliterates a whole layer of story complexity that was key in elevating the original from a great horror game to a masterpiece of psychological horror. Just further proof that the people in charge of this project don't really understand it well enough to give it the depth it deserved and had in the first place, and because of that I foresee semi-competent mediocrity at best from this remake. Such a shame.
I literally just finished silent hill 2 with the enhanced edition patch and I loved it so much to the point where I got all 6 endings with speedrunning on easy mode and chainsaw.
My heart is broken after I spent a few hours trying to get silent hill 3 to work on my pc :(. I could get the hd collection for like 3 bucks but I really don't wanna play an inferior version of the game

I cannot get past the absolutely awful voice acting in this remake (seen various footage of various scenes - and none of them sound good)
For all the grief that the OG game had for the stilted line delivery; that was an intentional choice, and the VAs still did an excellent job conveying the emotions/mindset their characters were in in any given scene, stilted dialogue be damned.
This remake, though? They all sound so bland/disinterested - like they're just reading their lines and, at points, sounding like they're rushing through them.
That word 'horrific' can mean both a good thing or a bad thing in this case. I hope it's good, but I expect it to be bad..

I disagree with Adam slightly that this trailer didn’t have issues, it definitely did they’ve really dropped the ball with Angela and Maria who are so important to this story. I wouldn’t hold it against Adam though he seems like he likes silent hill but has only played them like once or twice but there’s aspects of both of those characters that are very off in the remake so far.
This. I can see how they could be seen as "fine" for someone not super familiar with the games or with a casual interest in them (maybe because a lot of VA in modern games makes characters sounds like they're bored out of their skulls the whole time) but when compared to the original performances? Longtime silent hill appreciator here. All we can do is react to the trailers they're showing us, and I haven't been impressed so far. The gameplay trailer looked sterile, clunky, and outdated to me.
Thanks to Adam for bringing up the potential 'inflated' positive impressions on Reddit, I watched the same thing happen when the amazon fallout show came out in r/fallout-- a space that was once a wealth of opinions on the series became somewhere that only positive opinions of the show were allowed. Every day during the first few weeks of the show's release, there were a half dozen r/fallout posts on the front page of reddit with tens of thousands of upvotes, and most were submitted by brand new accounts with almost no karma before their fallout tv show posts magically blew up.
It made me finally realize that Reddit is a major part of marketing at this point for exactly the reasons Adam described-- its easy to recruit people to post and fans still think of many subreddits as 'fan spaces,' not extensions of marketing departments. Its just marketing at this point, abandon all hype until the game actually releases, and don't trust reviews until its been out for a few weeks already.
It's wild how easily people get deceived and manipulated without being aware at all now, anything public social media is a minefield of toxicity and brainwashing. Why I basically only hang in small friend-only servers on Discord tbh.

the opening is ass compared to the old one, marias old VA had SO MUCH heart and character, they made her so flat for a character who is supposed to be everything James fantasizes about his wife to be, laura isnt the same at all, Angela looks like a bought asset, eddie looks like louie anderson in bad colored contacts for no reason, they focused on abstract daddy soo much for no reason that it makes me think bloober is doing their abuse fetishization again, all the charm is gone from SH2 its a combat game (and a bad one at that) with sloppy paint over it.

I've always wanted remakes of any SH game. I just can't stand the way a lot of these people are dedicated to treat this remake like it can do no wrong. We should be able to critique things w/o people acting like any criticism is toxic criticism. Toxic positivity exists as well. ~*For me the overall tone & personality of this remake & it's characters are wrong. It's how the characters act & talk, not what they wear. The dialog, the voice acting is so wrong. The vibe & personality of each character is just wrong. Eddie is the only one they did well. The voice actor actually did well & they designed him really well. The personality & attitudes of the other character tho is just wrong. It sounds like they don't understand their characters or what is the correct tone they should be going for throughout the game.
I hope it will be good. I'm just worried this game will treat us like a kid. Holding our hands with Button prompts, Toned down storytelling, censored sensitive topics, you name it. Hopefully they do NOT do that. Hopefully they don't approach this like: "we don't wanna make people too uncomfortable" because this game is meant to make people uncomfortable. If they aren't okay with creating an uncomfortable, inappropriate game then they really picked the wrong team to make a game such as this.
I wish the fog was more intense. It could be a lot darker, forcing you to really rely on your flashlight & your radio. It would be cool if they sometimes used dynamic fixed camera angles or gave us the option to turn it on in the settings.
I'm okay with them making some changes. There are ways many things can be changed and still hold the same core of this game. I hope they find ways to achieve that. (it is annoying how divided and out of control a lot of people are getting. I wish things weren't so weirdly divided. Then some counter the critical people with a sorta Toxic Positivity. I wish valid criticism could be heard and addressed. It will be nice if things can chill out and we can get back to being able to critique things in a healthy way again lol)

After seeing most of the game, all i can say it could of been a lot worse, there,s no denying the voices are worse in every way, but there's no modern audience crap, Maria by some magic isn't a girl boss and actual act flirtatious towards James, there's even a look at the original costume moment and they don't mock it like Suicide Squad, James actual keeps quite and doesn't basically tell you what to do, the puzzles don't work themselves out after multiple tries, I've seen no major bugs or FPS drops, it's not perfect but like i said it could of been a lot worse.
They made Angela more "Realistic"- why didn't they make Eddie more realistic? Guy looks like Clayface now.
Saw a short version of this trailer multiple times on the big screen, when i attended a film festival last month.
Looked really bad on a screen that large.
Still standing by Silent Hill 1-3 as the best of the series. Should have ended there instead of becoming a corporate cash cow.

Being skeptical because of the early footage and trailer is perfectly fine.
Anyone going out of their way to say the recent footage and trailers look horrible and that the original is an untouchable masterpiece is really huffing their own kind of bad faith copium.

It’s literally my favorite game but there are some genuinely bad aspects to it.
Some of the puzzles, boss fights, and the voice acting being half garbage are my favorites.
@@MrMetalforever5 the voice acting adds to the tone, it's a positive. The boss fights are fine, nothing to write home about. The puzzles are cryptic and weird to, once again, compliment the tone.

I hated Layers of Fear so much. More like Layers of Shit. What special kind of asshole(s) who devoted their life to video games create a horror game in which the player can't die?
It was so lame how everytime I had the feeling that I HAD to run into the ghost in order to progress, what a shit show.

I have no investment in Silent Hill so to me it appears to be very radically mixed takes so far. I know the dev doesn’t have the most glowing resume though. Guess we’ll just see when it comes out

I hear akira's melody, but just doesn't have the same feel of the original ost where the original felt calm in places but unnerving in others. This feels bland... Might be because im bias to the original game but the more trailers i see the more soulless (theres a sense of irony there i think) this remake feels. So far the first SH movie kept the original feel of the ost and they only made small tweaks to it. So far this remake is going to flop hard in my eyes.

The acting is so stilted and one note trying to be all like "we're pro actors" that it ends up sounding less interesting and geniune, making the OG sound way better as a result.

Ironically, ever since letting go of any shred of hope that we'll ever get a good Silent Hill game ever again, I've found a perverted joy in watching the franchise spiral into increasingly piss poor reimagining's and the very worst excesses of Triple A business brain rot. It's about as comprehensive and egregious of a fall for _any_ game franchise that I can think of, and now that I'm done being upset with what was done to Silent Hill, there's a morbid fascination to witnessing just how far it's fallen and continues to plummet.
And yet the normies will tell you the OGs are purists and need to dye while needing 5second tiktoks to tell them what to think and feel

Also removing the fixed camera angles and getting rid of all the iconic scenes that thta system allowed for was such a great move!
