What makes the Sam/Akufo storyline funnier to me is that the actor who plays Akufo, Sam Richardson, is who Sam is primarily based on (in terms of his personality and just being an incredibly nice, sweet dude). Just in case you didn't know that already. Also, that actually is Nick Mohammad (Nate) playing the violin, but even better, his actual wife was playing the piano accompaniment.
@@Wiley_Coyote Oh, I'm sure I made it after most people on this video. I just thought it was a humorous coincidence. And I'd never heard it before, but it was pretty obvious, what with Led Tasso.
Still my favorite Easter Egg that we actually see Roy’s sister treating Dr. Fieldstone in season 2 before she’s even introduced as Roy’s sister. They laid the groundwork by saying she’s an ER Doctor in season 1 and that’s why Roy always has to be ready to watch Phoebe. But it isn’t until this episode that we see that Easter egg pay off. But on repeat viewing those effing Kent eyebrows should’ve been a big hint they were related.
They actually tried to create a Super League with teams from the UK and Europe in 2021. Many fans and teams campaigned against it. Eventually the idea collapsed not too long after.
"Eventually" and "not too long after" is selling it a bit short; it barely lasted a single week! Football has been going in the wrong direction for so long that I didn't have much hope of stopping that super league from happening, but the fans really did themselves proud that week! 🙂
That is indeed Nick Mohammed playing the violin, with his wife accompanying on the piano. [He] said: "I need to do a big shout out to my wife, who is an amazing well, viola player but pianist. And she actually accompanied on piano for the recording of that. So it’s me on violin but it’s her on piano. "We met through playing in Durham University Orchestral Society when we were both there. So music is a huge love, particularly classical music."
Nicely done! When Christo delivered that line in the earlier episode, I about fell out of my chair laughing! Even my non-soccer friends got it (we're in the US).
A lot of people have pointed out that Roy’s sister was the ER doctor from Season 2…. But did you catch Renee? Renee was first seen in “Beard After Hours”, as who Beard sent the Pub Gremlins to, to let them into Nelson Road and onto the field. He’s also who let Nate in to clean up and leave his apology to Will. He’s that creepy old guy behind the “Keep Out” door… BUT he is also who let Rupert in to Rebecca’s office! “The creepy old man who lives in the sewer?” “That’s mean…he only works in the sewer” is the exchange they have. BUT that is hugely important for later in the show…because it is implied that Renee is the old security guard who smacked around Rupert as a kid, and whom he gave a big raise to upon buying the team…prompting Rebecca’s speech! Seeing Rebecca being able to turn Rupert away like that…without emotion or disgust, just saying no and walking away, it’s a huge character step for her. But it also is for Rupert. Throughout the series, Rupert has made sure to remind Rebecca of everything she lost in their divorce…but for the first time, Rupert is realizing what he lost in Rebecca. BTW, the Hockney that Rupert asks “What did you do with”…and that shows up in the office when Ted comes in at the end? The same painting that Rebecca offered Higgins in the very first episode, literally in the first moment we meet the two of them. When Higgins points out how much it’s worth, he says it must be worth a million pounds, and so Rebecca tells the movers “Auction pile, please”…. So not only was Rebecca ultimately, hidden to us, unable to let go of this thing from her fifth wedding anniversary with Rupert, not only did she keep it…now, finally, she can appreciate it without remembering Rupert and feeling pain, anger, or any other negative emotion. Such a tiny thing, such an obscure callback, but its presence just says so so so so much about Rebecca and yet if you blink you’ll miss it. Also, BTW, on Roy’s sister…if you go back and watch it, it should’ve been a strong hint in Season 2 of their relationship, because right after the scene of Ted and Sharon talking to her was Roy at the classroom, saying he was there because his sister was a doctor at the ER and had an emergency! This episode, and this season, is just rich with callbacks, and meaningful callbacks.
42:42 My first suspicion that all that "I want to do something good with the money" was BS was when he bought out the entire museum and filled it with paid actors, lol.
My favorite part of this was the full throated "Get Out!" When you saw rupert, like a southern grandma kicking the dog out the house for dragging in mud lmao
This episode always hits me in the feels, especially with Rebecca and Nate. I feel like, especially with the two of them, this episode is really about reconnecting with your inner child and healing through that. Even with Rupert, i love how he gets humanized but not redeemed, and Anthony Head gives a really great performance.
Nick Mohammed is literally the cutest sweetest guy. It’s so sad that his character had such a dark turn because he’s so adorable. I’m loving him in taskmaster this year.
Nate was playing a piece by Arvo Part called Spiegel im Spiegel. After this episode came out I purchased the music for the viola (and piano) and performed it last summer. It is lovely. Also Phoebe's teacher's full name is Leann Bowen and it turns out that Leann Bowen is actually a writer for the show! (you can see her name in the credits for many of the episodes!). This is such a great episode!! Also on the card for Will was a piece of lavender!! (call back to season 2)
As a Mexican let me tell you that Americans have nothing on us when it comes to patriotism. Specially when it comes to our soccer team, El Tri. Danny is the quintessential international Mexican soccer player. Friendly, sweet and bubbly.... Just not in the pitch LOL 😆
There are so many men out there like Nate's dad. Including my own. That stuff had me legit crying when I saw it for the first time. My dad never did say it out loud, but did something that saved our relationship. I started my 40yr career in media at the little radio station across from my high school (I was a Senior). Came home after work the first day to find an envelope taped to my bedroom door with a note and a $20. "You did good. Take your girl to dinner." It was 1979, you *could* buy two people a meal for $20 back then! 😄 He wasn't home, but my mom told me he'd listened to my entire 4hr airshift - even though he hated rock music. I started watching this show because I heard it was about (real) football. I stayed with it because it's really about life & growth. Whooooh, what else? The "Super League" was actually an IRL proposal right around when this season was written. Was abandoned in '21 or so due to fan anger, but there's people trying it again now. Nigeria had the best footballers in Africa for *decades*. They're in a slump now, but I'm sure they'll be back, if the street baller immigrants I've seen here are any indication. And yeah, Mexicans are serious when it comes to El Tri. They've come so close to The Cup so many times, but have never won it. They burn for it.
I love this episode so much. We see so many characters at a low in their life or facing challenges but we get to see the results of the growth we've been watching for the whole series in them and the others around them. Rebecca pumping herself up in the mirror was so sweet, then her looking at these men who've been a source of intimidation to her and just seeing the little boys they once were was inspired.
2:37 Jamie has the best arc in TV history since Wesley Wyndam Pryce. 2:57 Dark Danny (or Rani Dojas) is awesome!. 🤣🤣🤣 13:11 Gotta agree with Jamie here, Roy's sister (Sofia Barclay) is all kinds of Nifty.😻 13:29 Sam Richardson usually plays such lovable characters, the fact that he's an even bigger douchebag that Rupert in this is a testament to his acting skill. 20:48 If I had an office, I would also model it after The Death Star. 28:14 Nate playing violin over Rebecca tearing Akufo a new a$$hole is everything. 🥲🤣🤘 And since I love Anthony Stewart Head, I'm glad Rupert got at least a slight redemption.
My favorite episode of the series. As someone who is disabled due to depression and other mental illnesses, Nate's seeming struggle with anxiety and depression is something I relate to heavily. Especially the scene of him playing violin and going through his old stuff. It's like, wanting to go back in time and relive a moment in life when you were happy, and you were carefree before all the shit in life got messed up. But it's so hard finding a way to reconnect with that part of yourself. He seems to find that connection and feels - even for a brief moment - a connection with his past self and was overwhelmed by the emotion. It also pairs well with the speech Rebecca is giving. Things used to be more to us than just a business, or work. We used to have fun. We used to be happy. It's an amazing depiction of what it's like for someone who's been dealing with anxiety and depression having a moment of peace with themselves and it hits me hard every time I see it.
maybe the one explainations for Danny's "alter ego" is that playing for your country is a HUMUNGOUS privelege and dream for many players and sometimes you can see in international matches players just want it more and it can lead to more aggression in the game and mentallity like in the game vs Shelleys West Ham.
In a series crammed of "will always break me" moments, Nate's Dad was the one that came out of nowhere the most. I know what it's like to be parented by someone, who on reflection, didn't know how to parent 'a genius' (without it sounding like a humblebrag). I was very much forced into academic pursuits. It's only a decade later, I've been able to follow my actual interests.
I love some people's reactions around Dani's attitude on this episode. As a latina I can say that they were emphasizing his roots. Football for latinos is literally life haha He is not like that because he is playing against Zorro, he is like that cause he is playing for Mexico and that is a different deal lol
If you like this show there's another UK-based comedy/drama starring a kind of clueless American called Catastrophe starring comedian Rob Delaney that I've LOVED for years. It's on Prime and it's FANTASTIC.
You didn't skip an episode. My biggest problem with the end of this season is that it's RUSHED. I do love it. But it really asks you to just strap in and take everything for what's presented. Every episode from here to the end really could have used an additional 5 or 6 minutes to keep everyone firmly in the loop.
I love the song that's polayig while Nate is looking at the photo album. The commentary during the Mexico-Canada match is hilarious - that's Colin Mochrie and Ryan Stiles doing the play by play.
Rupert wants Rebecca there because he knew that she would be against the Super League. She’s actually braver than him. Ted called Nate a genius in episode 2 of series 1 to Trent Crimm
Such a great episode. Really liked seeing Nate and his dad patch things up. Roy and Kheely patching things. The great Rebecca stuff and how Danny flipped to a Mexican cartel stereotype. Oh and Happy Uncle Day!!!! Roy and Jamie were hilarious in it and his sister is fit, which really broke Phil Dunster. And as people said, his sister is the doctor that treated Dr. Sharon. There were people complaining how Ted didn't do much this season and my response to that is that we see how he's affected the people around him to help them to get to their best selves. Oh if you're looking for a show to replace this I highly recommend Sou Sou No Frieren, or Frieren: Beyond Journey's End. Lots of great feels and wonderful characters in it. It's an anime so not sure if you want to try it out. I tend to like subs, so please watch it that way if you do.
I've been watching this with you for a while now even though I've already watched it, which makes it weird that I look forward to seeing your videos! Keep going man, you're doing great!
Akufo doesn't own the Nigerian national team. He just gave them a check to not invite Sam for the International games. The national teams are owned by the government. Every few months they have some matches & the head coach invites players with that nationality to play for the team.
Fantastic episode. The next one is my favorite of the entire series. It's astonishing how well they recovered this season after going way off track for a while.
Such a strong episode. Hit me in the feels so many times. And by far my favorite Danny moments Have you ever laughed and cried repeatedly so many times in one episode?
For soccer players, the greatest achievement as an athlete is representing their national team, which is why Danny takes it so seriously, even more so if you face a neighboring country.
27:00 It was about Russia-Ukraine war. That led to Russia's ban from WorldCup 2022, & Chelsea's owner being forced to sell the team because he was a rich Russian & a friend of Putin
Scream association comes earlier for many of us. It's burned into our brains. Even if I have watched Peaky Blinders, all of it. For people like me though, I also associate it with The X Files as I had a 1996 cassette tape called "Songs in the Key of X: Music from and Inspired by the X-Files", and the show itself used the song back in 1994 in the episode "Ascension" .
The super league was a real subject few years ago. They tried to make it happen but a lot of teams & fans were against it; because it was against the morals of Football. There was discussions of fining & even drop the teams involved to lower devisions
At this point I wish they would start a super league and make the regular leagues competitive again. City having a monopoly on the PL title and Real having as close to that on the CL title is so goddamn boring. At least Leverkusen stopped Bayern Munich winning the German league for like the 12th year in a row, because that league was beyond a joke...
On the Danny thing, I think its something Americans might not really appreciate. Your sports are almost all focused on local teams. Think about it like the Olympics - that national pride - but for the biggest sport in the world. Countries, especially in Central and South America, are fanatical about football. Didn't surprise me at all that Danny would turn into a scary mofo playing for his national team.
The Akufo Super League is a thinly-veiled reference to the European Super League that was going to work basically the way Akufo described it. There wouldn't be the usual promotion and relegation. It was instantly hated and imploded very quickly after massive fan protests in the UK. ua-cam.com/video/5fDM4mQq3zM/v-deo.html That said, there is a bit of hypocrisy in fans of the Top Six protesting since there's an argument that the Premier League is _already_ the European Super League, since their revenues are insanely more than anywhere else in the world.
The country versus club thing can be really strong. You'll have Arsenal and Spurs fans sharing a joyous pint together the following week as players from each club line up for England. The week after that, when the two clubs face each other the same fans will be singing abuse at any opposing player that missed a penalty for England "You let your country down", in an attempt to distract them. I think that one is particularly horrendous, but it's real: ua-cam.com/video/tA_CQ_-CpRE/v-deo.html
Akufo is a petty fuck but giving a smaller league team a mountain of money to blackball Sam still gives Sam's national team a ton of money to recruit players. And I love that it's stupidly petty.
National teams are a whole different thing than club teams. Clubs sign players from all around the world and pay their wages, national teams are made up of players from individual countries. The players spend most of the year playing for their club, but there are certain weeks of the year where they go off and play for their country instead, although nearly all the big tournaments take place during the summer, after the club season has ended. Akufo paid 20 million dollars to someone(s) in the Nigerian government or football association to stop them selecting Sam for the national team. That money could be used to improve Nigerian football in various ways, but anyone corrupt enough to accept that bribe is probably buying a yacht or something instead...
This upload drops the same day as the provisional England training squad (some won't make the final squad) got announced for the Euros starting next month, great timing. In place of the red-and-blue of Richmond's Jamie Tartt we have the red-and-blue of Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton getting his debut call-up.
Rupert is 💩, but I think his inviting Rebecca had good intentions. He knew his greed would win out if someone wasn't there to check him, & Rebecca was the person who could do that. He knew himself & the other men at the meeting to know that.
Because the story needed three seasons. Great tv shows continuing until they turn bad is one of the worst things about American tv, and I'm glad they stuck to three in this case.
The Russian invasion of Ukraine had quite an impact on the Premier League, with Roman Abramovich being forced to sell Chelsea, and Everton running into huge financial and league standing problems as a result of their Russian oligarch backer getting slapped with sanctions.
Season 3 is undoubtedly a bit of a mess structure-wise, with the Nate's departure from West Ham just happening as a bizarre handwave. Individually most of the episodes are very strong though, including this one.
One thing i love about this episode is that it humanizes Rupert beautifully but doesnt redeem him because he doesnt deserve it.
That's a GREAT way of putting it. Couldn't agree more.

I've been watching this with you for a while now even though I've already watched it, which makes it weird that I look forward to seeing your videos! Keep going man, you're doing great!
"GET OUT!!!" Lol
Akufo doesn't own the Nigerian national team. He just gave them a check to not invite Sam for the International games.
The national teams are owned by the government. Every few months they have some matches & the head coach invites players with that nationality to play for the team.
Fantastic episode. The next one is my favorite of the entire series. It's astonishing how well they recovered this season after going way off track for a while.
Mom City is the best. I love this whole season.
It’s not an olive branch, it’s lavender.
Which I think is a shout-out to the fabric conditioner scent that Will used one time and Nate screamed at him for it.

I really think you should watch SHRINKING next.. still Apple TV and one of the stars is Harrison Ford. Written by none other than Roy Kent! 🤣😊😊
Such a strong episode. Hit me in the feels so many times. And by far my favorite Danny moments
Have you ever laughed and cried repeatedly so many times in one episode?
what is the option for the new tv shows?
For soccer players, the greatest achievement as an athlete is representing their national team, which is why Danny takes it so seriously, even more so if you face a neighboring country.
Oh! And I think Jade was making a joke. She’s just very dry and sarcastic.
15:17 Nice falsetto.
FINALLY A MAN OF CULTURE
Red Right Hand IS Scream. Peaky Blinders is great but Scream had it first and used it better
27:00 It was about Russia-Ukraine war. That led to Russia's ban from WorldCup 2022, & Chelsea's owner being forced to sell the team because he was a rich Russian & a friend of Putin
That song reminds of Peaky Blinders
17:23 no in the original they dead or at least they don't show them alive at the end. i'm guessing you're talking about the Depp version
I love that Nate's dad is armed with a cricket bat, very British (especially for those with Commonwealth roots).
When i hear "Red Right Hand" I dont think "Scream" I think "Dumb & Dumber."
Always find it odd when someone connects Red Right hand to Scream instead of Peaky Blinders :D
Reaction to Peaky Blinders?! ;)
Super league concept is still going on in the real world 😅
The super league was a real subject few years ago.
More to the point, Dani grew up playing in the El Chapo Youth League, which... yeah.
@@AmazingChi Yes, he did. You can imagine those drills during practice.
Comment on the song that reminds you of scream… you need to watch Peaky Blinders. Best show ever made.
The Akufo Super League is a thinly-veiled reference to the European Super League that was going to work basically the way Akufo described it. There wouldn't be the usual promotion and relegation. It was instantly hated and imploded very quickly after massive fan protests in the UK. ua-cam.com/video/5fDM4mQq3zM/v-deo.html
That said, there is a bit of hypocrisy in fans of the Top Six protesting since there's an argument that the Premier League is _already_ the European Super League, since their revenues are insanely more than anywhere else in the world.
Sorry to break it to you, but those aren't the kids, those are oompa-loompa's dressed as the kids escaping from the factory
“What’s with all these rich assholes?” It’s almost like billionaires shouldn’t exist…
You gotta watch mythic quest?
That money could be used to improve Nigerian football in various ways, but anyone corrupt enough to accept that bribe is probably buying a yacht or something instead...
akufo may have ruined Chicago hotdogs for me
This upload drops the same day as the provisional England training squad (some won't make the final squad) got announced for the Euros starting next month, great timing.
In place of the red-and-blue of Richmond's Jamie Tartt we have the red-and-blue of Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton getting his debut call-up.
Yes 4 Crystal Palace players have been called up
OG Wonka movie with Gene Wilder we don't see the kids. They are dead.
Wait, did you not watch Peaky Blinders? 😮
Rupert is 💩, but I think his inviting Rebecca had good intentions. He knew his greed would win out if someone wasn't there to check him, & Rebecca was the person who could do that. He knew himself & the other men at the meeting to know that.
Why no 4th season? Don't get it
Because the story needed three seasons. Great tv shows continuing until they turn bad is one of the worst things about American tv, and I'm glad they stuck to three in this case.
My thought is Rupert is dealing with some sort of terminal illness.
We can only hope! 😉
