      (Pun noted by the way. :-) I have watched a few of these and have always wondered, why didn't you make a unicycle with a vertical chain and a gearing system, so that you could coast sometimes? The idea of a direct pedal drive is unimaginable for what that would do to one's knees. Guess I must be mistaken on that, but nevertheless. Please invent said unicycle, and next time you'll set a speed record. (Or, have you sworn to never ride one again? I could see that reasoning too, after this trip.)

      He's not on his ride around the world anymore, he completed it quite a while ago (I wanna say last summer, but I'm not quite sure).

      I guess he's the first to circumference the world on a unicycle. That was his vision. I don't know if the record would be officially recognized, but I know very well the feeling of achieving something difficult.

      @@krollpeter Pretty sure he said that it has not, and will not, be recognised by Guinness World Records. If I recall correctly it was because he spent too long in - atleast - one place. Might've been other reasons aswell.

    Truckloads of kudos for your ability to tough it out in Death Valley, Ed. Several years ago I abandoned my stay there when it was so windy I couldn't set up my tent on the second night at the camp ground in Furnace Creek. Lucky for me I was in a car and all the comforts of home were only hours away.

    Every single one of these videos would be a story in their own right. "I unicycled across death valley" --- the thing you would tell at parties, to your kids, to your grandkids. The fact that it's just a chapter subsumed in the wider trip of going across the entire freaking world is hard to fathom. ED PRATT FOREVER!!!

    I think theres something powerful in this episode. The feeling of accomplishment of getting through something difficult is a feeling you will most likely chase the rest of your life. Its an overwhelmingly good feeling and something we all need to experience.

    What you say about the simplicity of desert cycling really struck a chord with me. We cycled across the Nullarbor a few years ago and that was what I loved about it. I know you crossed the Nullarbor too, so I'm sure you'll agree.

    Near death experiences make beer taste better, and life more vibrant there after. Big wall climbing, long cycle touring, epic backpacking trips just help reset your brain's baseline so you can return to enjoying much of the rest of life in proper context for a while.

    I have to say you are one determined human and i love watching your videos, i hold the title of being the first person to unicycle all around Buckingham Palacel (in 1998 for Prince Charles 50th Birthday, i learned to unicycle 30 years ago in a disused granite quarry, on dec 5th 1989 i had an accident and fell off a 250ft cliff (not while riding) , 9 months later i got back on a unicycle, my doctors and physiotherapists were gobsmacked as i had broken my back and was told i may never walk again. Determination, like you i had it, ive now spent the last 28 years teaching unicycling and reckon ive taught over 150.000 people how to do it zo far.

    Only a foreigner or a glutton for punishment would’ve chosen such a challenging and brutal path out of the west coast.
    You clearly had to dig deep within to withstand the brutal sun and high winds. Kudos! Perhaps an accomplishment worth looking back on when you’re faced with the difficulties life is bound to bring.

    There's a lot more in Furnace Creek than a gas station. Stores, Restaurants, Lodging, Visitor center and a Golf Course. It's like a small town.

      Yes, the Netherlands is one of the few places (i.e. not many places) below sea level on Earth. He never said this was the only place, "not many" implies "more than one but less than a lot."

    You should always walk towards or against traffic. Atleast over here it's even the law and you might be (unlikely though) fined if you walked with the traffic.
    Also, that was very nice of Bobby to check out how you were doing. Nice to see there are decent folk out there even in these miserable times.

    I did a total of 20 mi in Death Valley, and that spot where the highway goes behind the ridge is amazing for the blocked wind

    Little fun info: Ed talks about walking on the left to better see cars coming ahead. Here in Germany, every pedestrian has to walk on the left side outside of any city, town or village by law, if there is no sidewalk. I assume this law exists because of this situation, actually seeing the traffic on your side.

    there used to be an endurance bicycle race called THE FURNACE CREEK 509 which started in santa clarita ca and ended at 29 palms. it was 509 miles and 48 hours to complete.

    11:40 The landscape around the Dead Sea (-430.5 m / -1412 ft) looks pretty much the same too. Oh, and you crossed the Caspian Sea - it's surface is at -28m / 92ft.
