I received the Bringing it all back home album as a present from my sister before I left for America in June 1991. This song stood out for me and has been with me ever since.
Little did I know that my life would change forever.
Magical tune and definitely the best rendition out there. It’s been 30 years now and still brings a tear! Legend.👏🏻🇺🇸🇮🇪

I recommend absolutely the version by the Irish folk "supergroup" Planxty. Planxty was responsible for lifting this wonderful traditional song, set in a lowly populated part of Louisiana, from obscurity in the mid-1970s. Versions by many stellar Irish musicians of the time were the result. I really love Paul Brady's version: there's a great 1977 video on youtube.

This was the first version I heard and (as sometimes happens) it remains my favorite; the delicate vocal, the slightly out of tune piano, the sax solo, all this and more makes it a particularly touching version of what is in any event a great song in the folk tradition. No disrespect to Christy or Paul. I love them both.
