He was my favorite; so artistic and doesn't sound "hooty" like many countertenors. A few of them have to sing this aria down a step or so which makes it dull sounding to me.

In my first round of listening I was leaning towards Scholl, but in my second and third rounds of replays I changed my mind. Best here is Michael Chance, hands down. This counter has a unique way of transporting us back to the baroque era. Not only is his intonation and tessitura perfect for this arietta, but also I picture myself as an early to mid 17th century opera goer sitting on first row at a Venetian theatre listening to Michael Chance's spectacular rendition of this piece. This man brings us true baroque vibes. Just became his fan.

All wonderful and all favorites! Forgot Jochen Kowalski (my No.1 favorite), Carlos Mena (A very favorite) , and many other great singers. In this collection, it is hard to chose one as they are among the very best singers in the world and each one has his own style and personality that do justice to this monumental work, as Franco Fagioli recently said in a promo interview. For some reason, however, if I were to chose the ones that in a single hearing make the most impression at once, I would chose Michael Chance and James Bowman. Here is a summary:
    1. Fagioli: Rich and powerful voice. A bit too operatic for being a sacred work.
    2. Scholl: Clarity, terseness, precision. Not much chiaroscuro.
    3. Jarousky: Efforless technique. Reminds me of Emma Kirkby. Clear voice and good-taste, but in my opinion, weak and unspired for this work, which requires depth.
    4. Michael Chance: Perfection. Perfect voice and approach for this work. Bitter-sweet interpretation. He understands that this is a sacred work. Magnificent chiaroscuri. Very inspired. Poignant.
    5. James Bowman: Perfection. Though different from Chance, less emotional, more restrained, more dignified.

Bowman, specially after seeing him live 2 times singing Purcell. He has a tremendous and tangible voice. Also heard A. Scholl live singing Handel and I can say that he is vibrant but different from the flair of James Bowman... Well it's difficult to compare, that's what I can say... 🤔

Scholl is the most creative in a quite fast tempo, and his timbre is with more warmth and depth. I like Jaroussky as a singer over all, but here I find him to ‘screamy’, like Fagioli. Both are to less colorful to me. Bowman and Chance are too slow and without and creativity. I think Orlinski will sing it beautifully too, also because he’s so creative and colorful.

It’s interesting, if you fast forward to James Bowman from the middle of Michael Chance, they sound exactly alike….!! Lovely compilation, and I am tending in this comparison towards the third guy, whose name I can’t remember without moving away from my comment…I like his very light crisp timbre. Chance sounded better when he was still at university. I have always loved Bowman’s voice but now that I have discovered he sounds like Michael Chance I have gone off him a bit 😁

Andreas Scholl, no doubt. Second place is more difficult, probably Bowman.
