I guess, it's because they invested big $$ in Maya licenses back then 10+ years ago and for backward compatibility issues otherwise. Not because Maya were any better than 2023 Blender. Today there are almost no reasons anymore to use anything else than Blender altogether.
Now that Canonical is offering commercial support for Blender, Ubisoft animation studio using blender we can say that Blender will definately become an Industry standard.(Adobe is also funding Blender now)
What About Animated Characters Like Pokemon, Kingdom Hearts, Animé And More That Can Be Made In A Blender As Into A Video Game Creation Design And Playable When Finished For Our Own
Battlestate Games (Escape From Tarkov) uses Blender as well On some of their screenshot, they have tree models made with Blender (i think they use both 3DS Max - for Animation and Blender for non destructive model)
There are more other things than just licences, Studios require other legal stuff and buisness deals. also Blender doesn't work well with other closed source Softwares which limits it's integration into Studios Pipeline.
@@kewa_design No, Pixar never used Blender, they have their own 3D Software which is called Presto. Renderman was built long time ago for their movies but started to sell it for other 3d softwares which also include Blender.
Looking at the comments section, I have to ask why do blender users feel the need to try to make themselves feel better all the time? Of course studios use blender, I use blender. But they also use 3Ds Max, Photoshop, Zbrush, Maya etc and you don't see users of those progs harping like this. But it will always be the "duct tape" of the 3D world. I think its because Blender is so accessible to everyone. Anyone from a Cheap Chromebook to a $10K Computer Set up can use Blender. Also, Blender 3D is used quite a bit by Artists of all Levels, from Cartoony Artists to war type art to even the NSFW. It all can happen, because of Blender. Also its easy to use UI is very good, compared to something like Source Filmmaker, which is the better option if you want maps right away from the Workshop, but is layed out like a Video Editing platform instead of a 3D modeling platform. I could load up Blender right now, Append 3 models, pose them, add lights, a camera, and a few walls, floors and Furniture, and create a pretty nice looking picture, in about an Hour.
I don't know about that. Ive been a Blender user for close to a decade and honestly there are times it shits itself when things get complicated. It has no where near the modelling/sculpting capacity of 3d Coat let alone Maya, Houdini and Zbrush, and not to mention, Substance Painter for rendering. Good for the indie game developer or hobbyist but not the pro. I'd recommend 3D Coat for the beginner. Blender is a waste of time and the cause of needless frustration. I only use it to for very basic work lately as 3d Coat is so much faster, better retopology workflow, awesome UV mapping, baking etc Blender becomes pointless. In my opinion, Blender is simply hype.
It is big hype mainly because it’s free. I do use it for animation and rigging though. That auto rig pro add on is a god send for now until KineFX in Houdini gets more tools..

In my studio, we are free to use Blender for modeling, UVs etc, but we have to transfer over to Maya for rendering.
Blender have 2 rendering engines, i don't see why you use Maya for rendering ?

Well it depends on which industry because VFX, ArchViz and maybe Animation Studios won't use it that much.

for gaming studios that adopt blender for modeling, do they model in triangles or quads?
all modeling is usually done in quads because it's easier to work with but on the game engine side all models will be triangulated
