Ric, thank you for the kind words. It's been very surprising to see the growth of the channel in 5 short weeks. I've never done a review or video of any kink... but I love riding bikes!
+MTB yumyum much respect!. I think your natural at this. You keep things clean I noticed. I think maybe that's respected as well. You really seem to be having fun and that's what makes it seem like you're riding with your buddy. For me specifically that kicks ass. Like I said I'm 50 years old and rode with your enthusiasm in my late 20s!! Keep it up brother
Bought a Hightower in the Plus version this summer and this bike has done the unthinkable, it brought riding to a new level of fun. I can't say anything that YumYum hasn't already said about this bike. But the added bonus is how beautiful it is. I get compliments on its beauty wherever I go, mostly from non-riders who see it in passing.
I just ordered a Hightower from my LBS and it should be ready next Monday. Great vid sealed the deal between a 5010 and the Hightower. Keep up the great work. Can't wait!
I can relate to you fully. I have a 5010 and it's an awesome bike. I demo'd the hightower and was really impressed. Such a fun bike with amazing manners.
Mike very well put, "amazing manners" is spot on! I kept using the word accelerate but what I think I meant was, holds speed and just rips... regardless, I really liked this bike!
Mike Peacock hey Mike I had the Hightower up until today and then I changed it and I have a 5010 cc and I rode it today on the trail for the first time and there's only one word I can to describe his bike and that's scared I was actually scared because it's so light and it doesn't forgive any mistakes one mistake and I nearly hit a tree where as the Hightower kind of it's more like a forgiving or something I can't explain it but like , it's more fun because you can ride it relaxed and it won't kick your ass 👍🏽

You know what, I was on the fence about getting a Hightower 29er, and after watching this video a couple times, I said, OK thats it, I'm getting a Hightower 29er, and I have NO regrets. I ended up getting the CC XO1 build, and all I can say is, this bike is f*&^%ing amazing. There's a lot of hills in my area and I use to climb them with my 2015 fully rigid, steel frame, over 45 lbs Raleigh Talus 1. It was a workout every time and my legs would burn up like crazy. The 1 x 12 Eagle and the Hightower weighing under 30 lbs, climbing hills is effortless, literally, my legs do'n't burn up at all. This bike is an excellent climber and an efficient peddler and also the 29er wheels make it a faster bike. Love the extra speed. The Hightower 29er is kinda like a sports car if you know what I mean.
These videos are awesome to watch. I feel like I'm out there on the trail. Now all I want to do is get myself one of these bikes and live it up on the trail!
I've not ridden the E29 but I would guess it's a lot more plush than the HT or SB... more like the Trek Slash or Pivot Firebird... I'll have a test ride & video review of the E29 before long... can't wait!
Recently come across your channel, and I must say that I'm impressed with the format. Anyway, I just thought I'd let you know that you have a new sub. Keep up the good work. I'm off to watch your Tallboy and Hightower LT reviews now.
Absolutely love your reviews!! How does the Hightower compare to the Pivot Mach 429 Trail when it comes to climbing and tight singletrack maneuverability? Trying to find the best “quiver killer” bike for xc and Enduro. Thanks man
Caleb, glad you're enjoying the channel. If you're riding enduro but still want something fun for XC.... between the 2 bikes you're looking at I'd go with the Hightower. I would say it's more maneuverable than the 429Trail and much more plush and stable at speed. If it's the DW link you're interested in in the 429Trail, Look to the Switchblade for a more stable and plush bike. Also, the Switchblade and 429Trail could be getting a new look in the spring so keep that in mind as well... good luck!
Great review! Thanks so much - I was waiting for this one. I did a parking lot demo the other day, but have yet to really ride one. Now, I have to clean the drool off of my monitor and start thinking of ways to convince the wife that, yes, I do need a new MTB after only a year w/ my current ride. :)
Navarre, hahaha this is awesome! Get your sales shoes on a go to work on her... I'm sure you can put together a viable case for a new whip! Good luck bro and thank you... I was waiting for this one as well... Don't tell anyone but 5010 might be going up for sale... shhhhhhhh
Thanks for the great review! I'm a bigger (6' 3, 225lb) rider currently riding a Knolly Chilcotin. I'm looking for something that I can comfortably ride long miles, with 2000+ feet of climbing, but still ride aggressively on the DH without killing the bike or myself. My knolly gets the job done, but at too much expense of energy. How would you say this bike would do on a 30 ish mile ride with a decent amount of climbing? It looks like it handled the rough downhill on Jacobs just fine, so I'm very interested to hear a bit more about your impressions on its climbing capabilities? Thanks.
Craig, thank you! For me if I'm not climbing more than 3,000 vertical feet in one ride I don't know that I'd notice all that much over say the Santa Cruz Tallboy. With that said, if you're more of a climber and less of a descender you might give the Tallboy a look... If going down hill is your business, the HT is your bike! On longer climbs I might start to feel more fatigued on the HT but it's really a very good climber! The geometry of this bike puts you in a good climbing position plus the VPP is so firm it just peddles really well. You might also look at the Pivot Switchblade. It's similar to the Hightower and offers a very good ride for you taller guys. Good luck on your search!
I really need to demo a SC already. I'm stoked on the Norco Optic I've been demoing but you make these SC bikes look so fun! Plus the different wheel sizes is very appealing. Can't wait to hear your thoughts on the Optic if you ever get the chance to demo one. Great vid as always and hearing how much fun you're having always makes me wanna go ride!
Hi, just got a Hightower s build and have nasties carbon rims on the way. Did you upgrade your bar? If so what do you recommend? Great channel by the way. Your review is a big reason I bought the Hightower compared to tallboy or 5010
Saw your Ibis Ripley video today and was excited because that is one of the bikes I am considering, somehow I went down the bike review rabbit hole and ended up here. I currently ride a 2017 Fuel EX that I love, but do notice that you "sit on top of it" like you stated in your review of it. I have also ridden bikes (mostly 27.5") that feel more nimble and playful than my Trek. I do love and prefer the 29" wheels at this point and don't think I'm willing to give them up. With that being said, is the Hightower the "be all, end all" of the short/mid travel 29ers when it comes to being nimble/playful? What others in that category would you rank as highly nimble/playful? Thanks!
The Hightower is an incredible mid travel 29er that is in my opinion, the one to beat. I'm bias as I've spent a lot of time on the Hightower... the Tallboy and Yeti SB4.5 are maybe more flickable and poppy than the Hightower. The Ripley is sort of somewhere between the short to mid travel 29ers and sort of reminded me of the Fuel EX only more stable and composed at speed like the Hightower. I'd like to try the Ripley again with 2.3-2.5 tires... Lots of good bikes out right now for sure!
Great review mtbyumyum, such a nice channel. I own a v1 Bronson and only ride with guys with 29ers, basically full suspension Stumpjumpers. On +20 miles trails, I'm having some hard time trying to keep up with them. Regarding only pedal efficiency, do you think the HT would be a great improvement over Bronson? I mean, do you think 29ers rolls much better than 27.5?, specially on non technical situations?
The 29" wheels def roll faster and hold their speed better than the 27" wheels. I can say that this is for sure the reason why you're not keeping up with your buddies but the 29er's are faster. Best of luck bro!
Dean.... NOOOOO hahha... I really hesitate to every answer these questions straight forward. That might drive you crazy but every bike is different and each rider has their own idea of "bike-perfection". I will go as far to say that the Santa Cruz HT and Pivot SB are easily the most fun I've ever had on a 29er in my life. I'm comfortable putting that out there. In fact I think I'll make a video this week about this very topic because I get these questions a lot and really like them but don't know how best to answer them. What's right for me may not be right for you or someone else... They're different in that the Switchblade felt more composed at high speed (not that the HT didn't) and really just wanted to rip in the wide open terrain. The HT imho had the upper hand in the tight spots and corners. The SB still felt like a 29er but I never once feel like the bike was taking me for a ride like a lot of 29er do for me. At 5'8" I don't always get along with 29ers... I loved LOVED both these bikes. Both peddle really very well and I honestly think these bikes are the future of mountain biking.... lower & longer geometry just feels really good, climbs awesome, and just rips the downs. For trail bikes these are the standard in my opinion!!!
MTB yumyum hey thanks that was a really good reply mate. Much appreciated. All you can do is give your impressions when it comes to any bike comparisons and I think that's exactly what most of us are looking for. I can't wait to see you ride and review a Yeti SB5.5 now. What a test trilogy that will complete. Great to have guys like you and BKXC putting out these awesome videos.
Thanks for the video as this one is on my list for 17. I got a 5010 full blown and 29ers nowadays are much better than a few years back. You think it turns just as well as the 275's on tight turns? Keep up with the good work, bro!
Richard, in my experience this bike gets in a turn and rails as hard and quick as my 5010... coming out it's a slower to get back up to speed but that's not every turn just specific tight turns that aren't very steep or come out to flat. For example, if you need to pedal coming out of a turn the 5010 gets back up to speed quicker... Hope that makes sense. Also, the HT caries more speed into the turn without effort. So on these trails where I'd be peddling into a flat turn the HT is already coming in hot. You def rides the trail different on the HT. Both are a blast! Yes, the HT has similar manners as a 27.5 in the twisties... that's probably a better way to say it than say it feels like a 27.5... it's def a 29er but is sure knows how to carve a turn! Thanks bro!
Great trail bikes reviews man, thanks for all these videos, giving us good infos on how these bikes perform on trails. We guys here dont have the luxury to test ride those bikes, so we always searching for reviews in internet..Currently I'm having a SC Tallboy 2 and Im happy with it so far but sometimes we need to move a step higher and since you guys there rode most the trail bikes maybe its a good time to ask you for advice on which trail bike to look for. Bronzon, HighTower, Strive and Specialized Enduro are on top of my list. Maybe you can help me to decide which one, I know they are all great bike but you got the actual feel about how they ride..thanks
fradily, thank you! Without knowing your trails, riding style and expectations of mountain biking I hesitate to point you in one direction over another... I will say that if you've been riding a Tallboy and are happy you will really love the new Tallboy 3 29er. Incredible bike. I will have the Tallboy 3 29er video review up in a week or so. Also the Hightower is a 29er that I think you'll really get along with if you've enjoyed your Tallboy 2. Just depends on how you ride, what your trails are like and what your goals are. The specialized Enduro is a much bigger bike than the others you've listed.... Good luck on your search!
Similar but I'd give the edge to the HT. Both feel really firm when climbing but the Bronson is more plush on the descent. 29er helps a bit over chunkier sections as well.
Best bike out right now I think. I am down to either this or a PIVOT SB or a Mach 5.5 or Mach 6. Probably this one though. My only question is which of the aforementioned bikes would be best for Arizona trails and by that I mean long slow technical climbs with long fast technical descents. Very very rocky with loose conditions and sand thrown in just for good measure. I already broke a collarbone and an arm and dislocated a hip in the last 8 years so I am wanting something with plenty of travel up front. All 3 accidents were OTB from big drops and a jump. I am riding a 2013 SC TB LTC with a 1° slackened head angle . 2.3 Minions. I love my SCTB most of the time, but when it turns serious DH I just dont feel like it has enough even at 140mm up front. I am too old to keep crashing.
Great vid.👍🏼 I'm thinking about getting this bike but i dont know what size should i get? I'm 6'1 tall so i dont know if im getting xl or large frame. Btw, u said you like more 29er than 27.5 + HT?
Thanks for all the awesome videos Jason. I was wondering if you had the opportunity to do any technical/rocky climbs with the hightower? maybe some step ups? I am wondering how it does on the technical climbs ... also, any excessive pedal strikes? The other question I had was how well did the HT handle technical descends while braking (compared to a DW link such as the switchblade or Yeti 4.5 with the infinity) Thanks in advance, Mike
Mike, thank you! No technical climbs... sorry dude. Also, no pedal striker on the same trails where I normal would get a few with my 5010. I may take some flack for this next answer but in terms of rear tire bouncing around under braking has more to do with shock/shock setup than VPP vs DW vs FSR vs Maestro.... for example, my 5010 tends to skip around under heavy braking where the Hightower was much more planted. Go figure right. One of the things that has driven me crazy about the 5010... Great questions!
Great video. I love watching your reviews! Here´s a history lesson (not a grammar nazi incident); "I may take some FLACK" is spelled FLAK which is an abbreviation of the german word "Flugzuegabwehrkanone", meaning "anti aircraft gun". The term was coined by english speaking airmen during ww2, I believe. Not trying to be a smart alec, but you seem like the kind of guy who would like to know;)
hi Mike not sure if.your still.wanting any answers but I've just test rode a HT thus weekend and managed some pretty techy climbs with no problems at all and had no problems with technical descents just stick the front wheel where you want to go and the rear will follow rides over rocks and tree rootsso easily up or down.... still test riding other bikes but that is now at the top of my list
Yes .. Agree with David. I was on the fence about the HT since there are just far too many great bikes out there the past year or two. I pulled the trigger on the HT (pretty high end build ... ok ... dream build .. lol). Very happy with it. Climbs incredibly well. Descends like a champ. I've had pedal strikes here and there on the 27+ wheels but on the 29'er, no issues what so ever (running 150mm Pike along with 170mm next sl g4 cranks). Extremely happy with the bike. Honestly, unless you're doing some XC race or some serious DH, this bike will hack it all. Great bike for someone who wants to own one bike that does it all fairly well if not great.
What's up Jason. Wanted to thank your buddy who called me up 2-3 months ago. He was reaching out on your behalf (your channel) trying to find out if I had any questions at the time regarding the HT I was considering purchasing. Well, he was a month or so too late but fortunately, it was a very sound decision. I've been extremely happy with the HT. How are you liking your HT? How are your LB wheels holding up? Any issues with them? I was checking out the pricing on the LB and I couldn't help but notice that their prices hiked up quite a bit since last year (almost $100 per hoop). I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on a B+ wheelset (can't stand the arc40's that came with the bike ... completely useless). Been riding my reynolds endure 29'ers mostly but gotta have a set of carbon B+ wheels ... it's so playful/fun! :) .... let me know about the LB wheels and what your overall thoughts are about the new batch (I know you've owned a set but I think the new ones are quite a bit different .. better).
Hi, great video! I have a Hightower myself but I got it on the Plus version, I'm looking into a 29er set of wheels, would you mind telling me the wheels and tire setup on that specific bike, and were they any good?
oz,me, thank you! I don't recall the exact wheels... whatever comes spec'd from Santa Cruz. Maxxis Highroller up front and DHR II out back as I recall. Those tires worked for me. I ride a Maxxis DHF on the front of my bike... favorite tire! I'd look into some LBwheels... that's what I have on my 5010 and very happy with them!
Loving all your reviews. I have narrowed down my purchase to the Yeti SB4.5C and Santa Cruz Hightower. I mainly ride locally in Mississippi and Arkansas. Most of our rides are on very fast manacured trails, but we take trips to more challenging trails a couple times of the year. What's your thoughts between the two? I currently ride an older Trek EX Fuel and I am ready for a change
In the market due to my hardtail having a crack in the seat tube along the top tube. Looking at the Specialized Stumpjumper, Santa Cruz Bronson, and 5010. Between the Bronson and 5010, do you know which one climbs best and then incorporates the best of everything else the trail can throw at it? Tallboy looks rad, is the Tallboy more aimed at downhill?
Tallboy has the least amount of travel in the Santa Cruz lineup and is the furthest from being a downhill bike in the lineup. It is a very good trail bike that climbs well.
I like the review format.. repeating the testing on the same track. What would you recommend for someone your same height in New England.. short punchy climbs, lots of roots and rocks
Just replied to your SB comment... In fact I sort of pointed you toward this bike. Glad you watched the vid. It's worth mentioning again for other readers though. If you're between a bike like a Pivot 429 Trail and the Pivot Switchblade not knowing what direction to go the Hightower might really work for you. That's not to say in any way that the HT is a compromise , it's just really quick in the slower trails with lots of tight turns and still really very composed on the high speed chunkier trails. Hope this helps! I mentioned to someone else, the Hightower is one of the few bikes that I could really see in almost any terrain with almost any type of rider and I think most people will really like it. In the tight turns I liked the HT better than both the Trail and SB.
Ugh. I think I need one of these. Just getting back into riding after a 6 year hiatus and shopping for a new ride. Man, things have gotten spendy! Your videos are great and make the selection process a bit easier. Subbed.
I'm trying to decide between the Santa Cruz Hightower 29er and Trek Fuel EX 8 29er. I'm planning to do more cross country but living here in the Pacific Northwest we have quite a few all mountain DH trails. What would you recommend. Thanks love your reviews.
If you're more of a xc guy I'd maybe consider the Santa Cruz Tallboy or the Fuel EX 29er.... this are much more comparable in how they feel and climb. The Hightower will be a lot of bike for xc work... I actually just sold my Hightower.... for a more xc bike ;) Good luck!
Hey, first off nice videos! Just stumbled upon them a few days ago. Kudos! I'm about to get a new bike and I'm deciding between the Trek Fuel EX 9.7 29 vs the Hightower. Unfortunately where I am I can't get a demo bike but I've seen you've ridden both bikes and would love to get some input o which one was your favorite and just an opinion between the two. Just judging by the reviews I would imagine the Hightower. Thanks!
On paper the two bikes are similar enough but for me they just feel like they're in different categories. Fuel EX feels more like a XC/Trail bike where the Hightower feels like a Trail/Enduro bike. I'd honestly like to ride the Trek again with better tires and less spacers below the stem. I also tend to like the firmer feel of VPP suspension on the HT. For me I'd go with the Hightower between the two but your mileage may vary. Good luck!
Kevin Pineda Gould, just my meaningless two cents but I went with the HT and its undoubtedly the most amazing bike I've ever swung a leg over. I had a Stumpjumper Expert and I thought that bike was perfect but it doesn't hold a candle to my HT. The HT did the unthinkable and brought riding to a new level of fun.
I don't know where you're based out of but I really wish I was there right now! I have been out of the MTB game for about a year now and am about to buy my 1st full suspension bike but being here in Oregon, with all of the rain, it becomes kind of hard to find the time to make use of it. Beautiful bike, great review! Keep up the good work!
SLC, Utah brother! You can ride bikes in the rain ;) Keep watching videos like these and I guarantee you, you'll be buying a bike again!!! As soon as I get done with an edit I think dang, that's awesome... I wanna go ride now. Seriously, I enjoy the video more than the ride cuz I can actually relax and just enjoy. Thanks dude!
Great review! I've been researching the Pivot Switchblade, and somehow ended up on this video -- looks like a great bike for the Sedona area where I recently moved to. I am definitely going to demo one of these bad boys soon.
I've ridden up ghost before haha. How would you say this compares to the Bronson? I'm saving up some money to demo one now. Just tried the stump jumper 29er out there and it was fun, but not as fun as the Bronson. I think I like 27.5 better but I was only able to test the 27+ version which wasn't my cup of tea so I'm curious how this climbs and corners compared to the Bronson and 5010.
ksanman, you must be strong... Ghost waterfall is a beast to get up on dry days! The Hightower 27.5 Plus is not the 29er so if the Plus wasn't your cup of tea doesn't mean the 29er won't be. Like you I've always gravitated toward a 27.5 bikes but between the Bronson and this I just might go HT. Again this is given the trails I ride most... your mileage may vary! For me the HT climbs as well or better than the Bronson, and felt quicker in all other areas. I might take some flak for saying that but I always felt like the Bronson sort of numbed the trail down and never felt overly plush... I really think I need to take the Bronson out again.
MTB yumyum I only like the Bronson because of the slacker ha. It's super nice and confidence inspiring in techy stuff and the extra sus would be nice for taking it to deer valley, moab, and at George a few times a year. I'll definitely have to try both the ht and Bronson out in the spring. My only grip with 29ers is acceleration out of corners. Stumpy and other trail 29ers were slow out of tight corners. I wasn't sure about the ht 27+ but I'll have to try the 29ee and see if I'm surprised.
kasanman, I think you'll be surprised by the HT 29er. That's one of the things I love about the 5010... slingshot out of the corners and really easy to get back up to speed after needing to slow down or get hung up on an obstacle. HT29 was really very good! I'm afraid the 27.5+ put a bad taste in your mouth... all Plus bikes are absolute dogs in pretty much every area the 5010 shines so I tend to poopoo all over them in my test rides. I know they have their place in the world, just not my cup of tea!
ksanman, I bought a Hightower last April and have been out to Park City, Moab and Crested Butte with it - it's an outstanding bike for everything I could throw at it. If you want it a little slacker in 29er form, put a 150mm fork on it instead of the recommended 140 - that's the way I run mine and it makes it that much more fun. As far as acceleration goes out of corners, the big wheels do take a half-pedal stroke longer to spin up compared to equivalent 27.5 wheels. You can, of course, throw money at it to fix that problem - carbon rims make it pretty snappy :-)
Jon Gotow I was going to throw money at the 5010 to make to beefier but at the end of the day I'm already dropping ~4500 on a new bike, I can't really afford to keep throwing more. (the point of the new bike is to stop throwing money into my old one haha). I definitely demo the high tower. Currently my view on trail 29ers is limited to the 2017 stumpy, tallboy, switchblade and mach429 trail. They have been good, but I like 27.5 more downhill still. They are easier to throw into turns and jump (Actually the only bike I have cleared a tabletop on is the Bronson, everything else I case) Which is why I want to try the ht. The 27+ cockpit felt right, so I assume climbing would be like the tallboy and descending like the stumpy. We will see come spring.
Eassshhhh, so hard to say without knowing you, your trails or riding style and goals/expectations. Also, these are quite different bikes... different wheel sizes and just overall give the rider something very different. I guess they sort of cover the same sort of terrain, maybe. I've absolutely loved the 5010 for the past year! One thing to note is that the 5010 has to be ridden hard/fast/full throttle to really have a lot of fun. Let off the gas on the descents and it just doesn't reward you. This is more a decision on what you want out of mountain biking. Both climb well, 5010 is a bit quicker in the tighter slower stuff but again, when I pin it on this bike it is untouchable in terms of fun factor!!! 5010 gets overwhelmed on really chunky high speed stuff. Nothing in the videos I upload overwhelm the 5010 the rowdier stuff is just more fun, smoother, faster, more in control on the Hightower. The Hightower is the boss of the chunk.... just floats over it... 5010 floats over nothing in these terms. Like I said, just different bikes, one not being better than the other. Sorry if this doesn't help. If I had a 2 bike quiver the 5010 would likely be in it.. but maybe not the Hightower. The Hightower on the other hand I could see being a better 1 bike quiver for most people... hope that helps! Good luck and let me know what you end up doing. Also, where are you buying from?
Thanks for your answer, it is very helpful to know your point of view. As you say, it all depends on the rider and the trail, for me XC / Trail and very rarely AM, in a more aggressive way every day. In your comment you say what I was looking, 5010 = fun, agile and in control, and Hightower it's a great bike but you lose some of the fun. Being a 29er HT, SC 5010 is going to be a big change, but I'm looking fordward to it. I am in Mexico, a few hours from the border with Az, I probably buy it online if I do not find a good deal in the stores in the Tucson and Phoenix area.
You said, "5010 = fun, agile and in control, and Hightower it's a great bike but you lose some of the fun" this is not accurate... The HT is more in control at high speed for sure. They're both a lot of fun and just do different things... The 5010 is quicker coming out of corners and will require less effort to get back up to speed. The HT holds speed better and is more composed at speed. Both feel agile and alive... I really like both of these bikes! I would reach out to www.competitivecyclist.com/ for your Santa Cruz purchase... incredible customer service and can help you spec the bike just the way you want it! Good luck!
By 29er HT i mean 29er GT Zaskar HardTail jejeje. I'm 5'-6" - 41 years and when SC release the superligth 27.5 for S and M and 29 for L and XL make me think that maybe 27.5 it´s better for me that 29, i would be easier to handle and maneuver than a bigger bike, making it more fun, I know than going 27.5 i'm lossing a few things of the 29 but i'm willing to give it a try, besides i think it's all about the fun. Yesterday i made my first purchase from them, couple jerseys, i decide to give them a try after pricepoint.com when out of bussines.
Great review, as always! I'm almost ready to pull the trigger but I'm torn between HT, Bronson and Switchblade. At 6'5" I'd be more proportioned on a 29er but I'm also looking for a nimble ride and a 27.5 would be the ticket. You says the HT is nimble compared to other 29er, but how close to the Bronson or 5010 is it? Between HT and Switchblade, which is the winner? Looking forward for a HT 27.5+ review.
Giordano Casini If I were as tall as you and had interest in the bikes you've mentioned I'd be leaning toward the Switchblade or Hightower. The XL Switchblade will likely fit you best and help to not have your backside hanging clear back behind the rear hub. All good bikes. HT might be ever so slightly quicker in the tight turns & twisties but both are outstanding!
You mentioned that a shorter bike with less travel might be better for those of us who like the slower, more technical climbs and descents. What would be the bike (or 2) you’d recommend for such riding? I find the 67 degree HT angle of the 5010 just a bit too steep for rocky descents.
The new Rocky Mountain Instinct is incredible with a 66 HT angle... that would definitely be worth looking at... www.bikes.com is Rocky's website If you haven't had a chance to ride the Hightower... it's one of the most capable bikes out there. I would for sure check it out. Here's a link to more info on the Hightower. bit.ly/2lY2uDl
I liked the Hightower better in 29er form than 27.5+ In 29er form it's very fast and gets through the tight stuff and switchbacks without problem. I do like 27.5 bikes a lot too! Good luck!
Really enjoyed this and your other reviews. I can tell that this bike really resonated with you. I'm hoping to get my hands on one of these in the near future. Review wise, I might suggest a better mic for your summary at the end. Of course, that's more money out of your pocket along with the demo fee.
Great review. Any chance you can do a ride on the new Tallboy 3. It's Hightower like with the 29er/27.5+ but less travel. It would be interesting if you compared the two if possible. All the best.
Great review.. I always look forward to these. So, my trails are a good mix of everything..fast and also slow and techy. I've been a 27.5 guy as well..still afraid of losing agility in tight stuff, but definitely gotta test some more 29ers. Anyway, would you prefer 27.5 if a particular day consistented of slower stuff? I'm wondering if 29 would be a bit boring in those times when it didn't have the chance to really open up. I enjoy my 27.5 in those situations, but yea..would love the extra speed you can carry with the bigger wheels. Damn, too confusing..guess I'll wait til the next wheel size comes out, haha..
Great question and thank you! It's not just the wheels size that can quiet a trail down to boredom, a raked out 26 or 27.5 bike can make a trail really very boring. The geometry has more to do with this than the wheel size in my opinion. Yes 29er roll over stuff better and have a plowing sensation but go ride a DH bike... see my point. These new geometry 29ers are really very incredible. The HT rides like a 27.5 bike to me but still has the plow through anything feeling. It was very quick side to side for me and almost as good as my 5010 which is regarded as one of the most poppy and flickable trail bikes out there. I'd say demo a HT if you can!!!
+MTB yumyum Awesome.. thanks for the reply and good point about geometry. My "all mountain" 27.5 has a 68° hta, which is considered steep nowadays but I like it. I do think some am bikes are too slack now and yea, it can take away from the snappy feel, imo. Definitely interested in these new school 29ers like the HT. Thanks again!.. much appreciated.
Awesome video! Helps hold me over until my new Hightower arrives later this month. Can you provide some information about the frame size, tire pressures, maybe some shock setup details relative to your size & weight? Thanks!
Jonathan, totally pumped for you... you'll love the Hightower. I try to always remember to list my height and weight in the video... maybe I forgot. I'm 5'8" 140 lbs. I rode a Medium, Tires were 22psi rear, 17psi front, Santa Cruz website shock/fork spec recommendation and adjusted the rebounds as needed. Glad you enjoyed the vid! Subscribe and check out my other reviews!
I ride a Hightower 29er right now. It's time for a new bike. I am considering the switchblade and 429 trail. Is there enough up to replace the Hightower with a switchblade? Also, do you think the 429 trail is enough bike for all around riding?
The differences between the HT and SB are few. The SB is ever so slightly more stable at higher speeds and feels more planted and ready to plow through anything. The HT is a fair bit more lively at slower speeds and in the tight twisties. Both climb well and would make outstanding do everything bikes. 429 trail is an amazing trail bike but if you're a 1 bike at a time sort of guy and like to get rowdy from time to time the Switchblade might be a better fit!
So how do you compare the Switchblade to the Hightower, I just bought a Switchblade and my buddie has the Hightower and I just wanted to know your thoughts between them.
Ray Cantu, the Switchblade and Hightower are really very similar. These have probably been my 2 favorite bikes I've demo'd this year... excellent bikes! If there we're sections of trail that one stood out from the other I'd say, the SB was incredible in the chunky high speed section and the HT was really nimble and quick in the tighter twisty sections. They were both amazing everywhere on the trail but those were just areas where one sort of students out over the other. For me these have been sort of the 2 bikes to beat if you're looking for a 1 bike 29er quiver killer! Again, neither bike was bad or disappointing anywhere on the test rides.... really amazing bikes!
For someone that is 6'4".. doesn't necessarily hit high speeds.. enjoys descents as much as climbs.. more of a novice.. would you recommend the 5010 or the HT?
Neither... for a really tall guy you're top priority is finding a bike with a very steep seat tube angle (sta) this is your top priority in my opinion. Because your so tall your saddle is very far out of the seat tube and with a steeper sta you'll be sitting more directly over the bottom bracket making for a better peddling bike, better climbing and just everything better... tall riders often find themselves siting almost over the rear axle with the slacker sta of older geometry bikes. If I were your height I'd look to the current Yeti SB130 for a do everything 29er with excellent geometry for a taller rider! Whatever you end up with pick something with a steeper sta, good luck!
@@mtbyumyum appreciate the advice! I'll try and demo the Yeti. Do the large sizes of the HT still not give taller riders the necessary sta? Recommend Giant or Trek for taller riders?
No, the current Santa Cruz Hightower and Hightower LT do not have as good as sta as the current Yeti SB130 or a few other bikes available right now. When looking up the geometry of the bikes you're most interested in, pay attention to the sta... I would try and find something 75 degree's or steeper... I think the new Yeti SB130 is 77 degree's so that would be very good for you! Good luck!
@@mtbyumyum if i may ask, any other brands you recommend looking at? I'm having a hard time finding other models 75 degrees or greater. For instance, is the Canyon Strive in the range since it says 73.5(+1.5)? Appreciate the help!
Love this review. Rode my mates SC HT 27'5+ which felt quick and proved to be as I bettered my previous pb by 11s down to 2:35, which turns out to be the overall fastest this year (who would've? My mates a bit gutted). However I'm leaning to the 29er and you've reinforced the idea. I did consider the 5010 but perhaps the Highchair will cover more bases. Any chance of reviewing the following? Cheers from the UK.
I would suggest the Rocky Mountain Instinct.... it is everything you've described and more!!! Between the HT and HTLT, I'd for sure go LT but honestly, the Rocky Mountain is the better bike... demo if you can!
Both good choices... honestly pick a wheel size! If it makes any difference to you... I've been thinking about getting a Hightower for a long time... in my opinion it's just as quick and nimble as the Bronson but holds it's speed better and just for whatever reason just felt better for me. I have about 35 miles on the Hightower and over 100 miles on the Bronson. I really wanted to love the Bronson but we just never got along all that well. Good luck, let us know what you end up with!
What a great and fun series of videos you've made. Since you've enjoyed this bike so much with VVP suspension, I'd love to see you throw a leg over the new Intense Primer, whose taken the VVP and completely re worked it, and shred the trails for comparison. BTW, what are the trail names you're riding there? I'm in AZ and come up to UT often.
Thank you! I'm not aware of an Intense dealer in my area... I'll look into it! This is filmed in Corner Canyon, Draper, Utah. Jacobs ladder & Ghost Falls trails. Excellent trail system here of mostly buffed and groomed single track. The 2 trails in this video are among the most chunky... nothing to crazy here ;)
I have watch most of your videos. Great work, hope you can keep it up. After a ton of thought, I think I am going with a 2018 Hightower 29er and also keeping my short travel Santa Cruz Not sure if I will go R or S build. Seems as if it might be a good idea to upgrade the wheels on the R build at some point. How did you like the S build wheels? 2018 Trek Fuel EX 8 looks like a great aluminum option too, comes with a dropper and Eagle drivetrain for $3200 They also spec'ed the Fuel with XR4's this year, they must have watched your videos!
Awesome! The Rocky Mountain Element right? Have you tried their mid travel 29er the Instinct? The 950 looks like a heck of a good value. Hightower is probably still a safer bet for me though as there are plenty of shops around her who sell and service them.
The new instinct is coming out in the next few month. All new look with better geo... looks good. The Hightower is killer if that's what you end up with!
Do you think it would be too much fork to go with the plus bike and get a set of 29er wheels.(150 fork in 29er mode). Thanks, pulling the trigger this week. Lol wife told me I should get a new bike, prob got tired of me researching and talking about it )
Life the videos man, keep them coming. Now for me to decide between the 5010 and the Bronson I feel like this might be the best middle ground. I rode that same build but only around the parking lot. It was awesome though
iAmCarlton, glad you like the video, thanks! Tough choice ahead of you friend. All great bikes but different in their own right. The Hightower on 29" wheels is a different bike than the other two. Even though the HT and Bronson are different sized wheels they're more comparable. I wouldn't say the HT is middle ground between the 5010 and Bronson. It's faster than either bike imho and is much more Bronson than 5010 in nature. Good luck, I'm excited for you!
hi. I'm stoked on the tallboy 3, if that's on your demo radar. surprisingly, i can't find any reviews anywhere online, other than "first look" stuff. ??? ...i like your channel - thanks!
I rode the HT 27.5 Plus a week ago... the test ride & review will be uploaded to UA-cam on November 21st. SB29er vs HT29er... one is not better than the other, they're really very similar. I would say the Hightowers strong points are it's very quick in the tight stuff and flower twisty trails where the Switchblade is a fair bit stronger at wide open high speed chunky gnarly terrain. They're both very composed at high speed but the Switchblade is probably a little more plush when the trail gets rowdy. They climb equally as well as each other. Overall, I really really like these 2 bikes! Subscribe and turn on notifications so you don't miss any of the future test ride & reviews!
I want to get into riding trails and roads and as I lose weight maybe hit up some intermediate trails..... I'm a 6'2 man weighing in at 315lbs... I don't have a deep pockets (1K Tops id go) so what would you suggest..?
Super cool you're getting into riding... as far as what to get, I have no idea what to tell ya... $1,000 is a stiff budget but I'm sure there s something out there that will get you out riding. Good luck friend!
Not necessarily. They're different. Different wheels size is just the start of their difference. The 5010 likes to be ridden fast the entire time. You really have to pin the 5010 to make it wake up and stay active. This of course is my experience with the 5010 and I love it for this giddy'up attribute. The Hightower is a faster bike meaning it holds speed faster, and is more composed and "in control" at high speed over chunky terrain. I think most anyone who rides the HT will like it. It's a more versatile bike that is better for more types of riders and different terrain. The 5010 is incredible but like I said, you have to be in it's red zone to have a lot of fun. Hope this makes sense. If I didn't answer your questions please let me know if I can give you better or more detail. Good question, thx!
Any chance for a tallboy 3 review? i think it would be rad to compare it to a mach 429 trail. Especially if the hightower is juts a bit more travel then you need.
Riding the TB3 Thursday of this week... video will be uploaded to UA-cam in 3-4 weeks. Check me out on Strava to see the test ride weeks before the video!
Great review again! Hey, may want to bump up your shadows and blacks a bit in your video editor. The shadows are crushed and it's a bit hard to see the terrain you're riding on (and you know we wanna see the fun stuff! :-)
thank you... I'm terrible at editing... like really very bad. Am I able to make changes after uploading to UA-cam or are you talking about future videos? Thank you!
Yeah, it's really close. They're both incredible bikes! If you're never on really rowdy trails that you dont want to get bucked around on, the Tallboy is your bike. If you want to smash the rough stuff, get the Hightower. They're about equally fun on the tight turns and both feel poppy. The tallboy is faster and climbs better and is just a bit more poppy. Good luck!
Thanks for your great reviews..... I'we been going nuts and probably watched and read hundreds of reviews on bikes for the past couple of months. I´m sold on the Hightower and this video is one of the reasons. Unfortunately we do not have Santa Cruz dealers in my country so I will have to take my changes.
Love me some Hightower! I test rode a 29ner version as well prior to buying my 5010. It's a superb bike and arguably a 1 bike quiver. Hopefully you'll ride the 27.5+ I'd be interested on your comparison between different wheel sizes
still loving this videos! whenever you get the chance, cannondale bad habit carbon and trek farley ex 9.8... if you get a chance to review them, that would be awesome!
Dubi Berger, the Santa Cruz Hightower 29er and Trek Fuel EX 29er might look very similar on paper but on the trail they are for me not in the same ball park. Hightower wants to get rowdy and plows through any and everything. The Fuel EX is more of a xc/trail bike and just doesn't descent with the same level of confidence as the Hightower. Both pedal well but when the trail gets a little sketchy and you really want to go fast, the Hightower owns the Fuel EX.
thanks, I had a very interesting discussion with my bike dealer, he recommends me not to go on the Hightower but it is too aggressive for my needs, he managed to build a very nice offer on the 5010 cc 😀
Without knowing your trail system, riding style or goals and expectations with riding I hesitate to point you to much in any specific direction. If you are thinking of going with the 5010 I've got no problem with that... My only mountain bike is a 2016 Santa Cruz 5010 and I love it! The only thing that sticks out to me is the other to bikes you're asking me about are 29ers and the 5010 is a 27.5... don't know if that matters to you? Good luck and let me know how I can help! I would honestly give the guys at www.competitivecyclist.com/ a call... they're incredibly knowledgeable and helpful in buying a new bike.
actually I'm still riding my lovely Stumjumper 26" and originally I was looking for 27 size but all around claim 29 or 27+, anyway at weekend I'm gonna test the Trek and later the Santa, I'm really curious with which bike I'll fall in love ❤, your reviews and comments gave me real help and points to think of… many thanks
I thought that Santa Cruz had the coolest painjobs of all brands... and then I saw the YT Jeffsy CF Pro in Coral/Raw... If I were a rich man I would buy that bike just to look at it.
Budget bike for $5k? Whew... I'm barely scratching the surface into the $1k range and wincing above $2k. Cheer dude, I love the color scheme on that model.
Chris, good point... this is the S build which is on the lower end of Santa Cruz carbon bikes.... I think Santa Cruz is worth the premium you might spend over other brands!
It's hard to choose with so many great bikes out there as you've mentioned. I'm still rockin' a 2013 Trek 3700 (26" still, beginner bike) but I've upgraded to a 1x10 with a 42T cog. I need to try out a full sus and see what works for my local trails (they don't look as fun as the ones you ride on). Definitely dig the Santa Cruz bikes.
Hello, I am writing to France I love what you are doing keep it up !! I order a switchblade 29 you think that Santa and better than the Pivot thank you
matteo 13, you are going to absolutely love the Pivot Switchblade 29er. The Hightower and Switchblade are so similar I wouldn't worry for a second that you made the wrong choice. These are my 2 favorite 29ers out right now. Congrats on the new bike.. you'll love it! Thank you for the kind words. Glad you enjoy the channel!
I've not ridden the LT yet so I can't comment on that bike... Most of the time for taller riders you want to look for a bike with a really steep seat tube angle (STA). The concern for taller riders is the fact that the higher the saddle is out of the frame the more likely you are to have your backside over the rear axle. The steeper the STA the less likely you are to be that far back... hope this makes sense?! I have a friend who rides the Pivot Switchblade, He's 6'5" and loves the fit. Maybe just consider this idea as you shop for your next bike. Good luck!
The Hightower could certainly be the right bike for you... I"m just tell you what my only tall buddy rides as I'm only 5'8" and hate to be giving you my input as I"m much shorter than you. I'd say demo any bikes you're interested in and remain cognoscente of the STA on your test ride of all the bikes.
Hey, you should some time review the 2017 sant Cruz nomad, I'm thinking about buying one and it would be cool to havhave someone else's opinion. Thanks!
Im so jealous that you live in such a cool area. My town of Omaha just isn't even comparable.😕 Anyway, new to your channel and I enjoy watching your reviews. Please review the Following if you could☺
Jason.... pack the family up and move to the 801.... you'll love it here! Economy is strong, people are awesome and family friendly, you'd likely find a job right away and there's literally endless miles of trails within 30 minutes of anywhere in the valley!!! (these trails are 5 minutes from my house) I'm mostly joking of course but I do love Utah! EVIL Bikes are on my list but the only dealer is an hour and a half away... Might be early spring before me and Evil get acquainted. Glad you like the channel... thank you!
Filmed in Corner Canyon. Jacobs Ladder, Ghost Falls and Canyon Hollow in this edit. Great trails. I might be starting a local group ride every other week or so if you're interested?! Let me know!
I'm kinda thinking out loud If I were to get a Hightower with the 150mm, its quite a bit of travel around Houston Texas, but if I were to take my bike with me to Colorado or Mexico in the future I would like this Hightower and its gemoetry for it It would be great with those specs and 140 mm travel so I'm really considering it still The Hightower if purchased with the 29 inch tires (which I prefer anyway) actually comes with 140mm fork instead which is a bit better for what i willl be riding This bike is compatible with 27.5+ also But you have to change this flip chip deal to raise the bottom bracket height a bit And also use a 150mm fork according to some to keep the same head angle My question is What if I were to use the bike with 29" tires Keep the 140mm fork And flip the chip on "high" as if I changed the fork and wheels to "27.5+ " mode Wouldn't it give it a steeper head tube angle thus making it a bit better for cross country types of climbs and trails around Texas? Thanks for your input in advance !
Yeah, I see what you're saying... Your BB would be much higher and really change the way the bike rides. I've had my fork at 150mm and really enjoyed it. You might actually consider the Tallboy... it's much more capable than you might think!!!
MTB yumyum thanks for the input I do also think the bb height will be too tall I'm so hard headed though I just love the new White and blue color of the 2018 highTowers I might just get it anyways and sacrifice a little bit of climbing performance for some more confident descending Coming from a hard tail 29er XC BIKE I do notice a massive difference when climbing on my brothers stump jumper 3" fattie bike
Great trails, great colors, great test ride!
Brian, cant wait for you to ride these trails.. so flowy and fun! Thanks brother!
MTB yumyum if u should choose one bike for everything - would it be the Tallboy or the HT?
How often do you ride St George or come to Vegas. lets ride! I need to make it home to PC more this season too.
BKXC will
Dude, your reviews just keep getting better and better. I have watched endless amounts of UA-cam bike reviews. Simple fact you're the best keep it up.
Can't wait!
I don't think you'll be disappointed!!!
Mike Peacock hey Mike I had the Hightower up until today and then I changed it and I have a 5010 cc and I rode it today on the trail for the first time and there's only one word I can to describe his bike and that's scared I was actually scared because it's so light and it doesn't forgive any mistakes one mistake and I nearly hit a tree where as the Hightower kind of it's more like a forgiving or something I can't explain it but like , it's more fun because you can ride it relaxed and it won't kick your ass 👍🏽

what did you end up with? 5010 or hightower?
I’m 13 and I’ve had this bike for around a year now, and I’ve been winning races ever since!
Couldn't agree more. Glad you like it and congrats!
Picked up my HTLT 29” with XX1 Reserve Build 4 days ago - having changed from a nomad - it is awesome.
nice, congrats!
MTB yumyum thanks - and thanks for the supper channel - love your reviews and passion for cycling
These videos are awesome to watch. I feel like I'm out there on the trail. Now all I want to do is get myself one of these bikes and live it up on the trail!
Any bike will do but dang... it'd be nice to have a Hightower!!! Such a great bike. Thanks for the kind words!
Great stabilised image, what gimbal did you use to do that ? Cheers from Mexico !!
FY wearable gimbal. Starting to have problems with it after 2 months of use... Might try something else next.
Thanks for the great review! It was fun watching it!What do you think about the Specialized Enduro 29?Is that comparable to the HT and SB?
I've not ridden the E29 but I would guess it's a lot more plush than the HT or SB... more like the Trek Slash or Pivot Firebird... I'll have a test ride & video review of the E29 before long... can't wait!
Recently come across your channel, and I must say that I'm impressed with the format. Anyway, I just thought I'd let you know that you have a new sub. Keep up the good work. I'm off to watch your Tallboy and Hightower LT reviews now.
Thanks for the kind words Chris... please stick around, comment and share in any way you feel comfortable! Thank you!
Navarre good luck with that. I failed on the new bike front.
Navarre, hahaha this is awesome! Get your sales shoes on a go to work on her... I'm sure you can put together a viable case for a new whip! Good luck bro and thank you... I was waiting for this one as well... Don't tell anyone but 5010 might be going up for sale... shhhhhhhh
so byebye 5010... hello HIghtower? :)
Yes, the wife negotiations. Sometimes they continue into the night.
would you say that the tallboy is more nimble and climbs better
Rock on Wes!!! Watching these videos makes me wanna go ride too! Get yourself a demo on the HT... won't disappoint, I promise!
Hi, just got a Hightower s build and have nasties carbon rims on the way. Did you upgrade your bar? If so what do you recommend?
Great channel by the way. Your review is a big reason I bought the Hightower compared to tallboy or 5010
So glad to hear. Thank you for sharing. You'll love the HT. Excellent bike for sure!
So the obvious question, Hightower or Switchblade? Which do you prefer and how are they different? Great riding and videos mate.
My pleasure bro!
Thanks bro!
Great reviews as always from Yumyum. I am between HT and HT LT. What losses I´d get with the LT?
Go check out my most recent 2018 Hightower video... you'll find your answer!
Hows the climbing ability between the Bronson and the Hightower? Much appreciated! Great vids!
Similar but I'd give the edge to the HT. Both feel really firm when climbing but the Bronson is more plush on the descent. 29er helps a bit over chunkier sections as well.
This is awesome. Could you do a test ride on the Fezzari Delano Peak? I'm very curious about that bike
I would say go with a large. But if you can demo or ride one around and see how it feels. 29er all the way. 27.5+ is slow.
Thanks for all the awesome videos Jason.
I was wondering if you had the opportunity to do any technical/rocky climbs with the hightower? maybe some step ups? I am wondering how it does on the technical climbs ... also, any excessive pedal strikes?
The other question I had was how well did the HT handle technical descends while braking (compared to a DW link such as the switchblade or Yeti 4.5 with the infinity)
Thanks in advance,
Mike
Great review as always have you still got the 5010 ? something tells me you liked this bike a bit too much to hand it back
haha, yeah. I sold the 5010 and got a Hightower!!!
They are both great bikes. Are you wanting a 29 or 27.5?
29er. Have you reviewed the Specialized Stumpjumper yet?
Nice, I'm curious though compared to the switchblade and 429 did this bike handle tight turns better?
Subbed.
SuperSnallygaster thanks man! Good luck on finding a bike. Shoot us a message if you need help making a decision.
Thanks!
Great, thanks!
Great review!!! I'm planning to buy a new bike soon and your point of view would be very helpful. What's your impresión of the Hightower vs 5010?
MTB yumyum You say the Switchblade will fit me best because it's longer? Thanks
Yeah, I would think it might fit you a bit better... you're a tall dude!
What does it feel when u ride the HT 29er? Especially youre a 27.5 dude, did u have hard time handling it? During turns, switchbacks etc..
I liked the Hightower better in 29er form than 27.5+ In 29er form it's very fast and gets through the tight stuff and switchbacks without problem. I do like 27.5 bikes a lot too! Good luck!
MTB yumyum how tall r u?
Really enjoyed this and your other reviews. I can tell that this bike really resonated with you. I'm hoping to get my hands on one of these in the near future.
Review wise, I might suggest a better mic for your summary at the end. Of course, that's more money out of your pocket along with the demo fee.
Thank you! Yes, I'm really started to like these longer, lower 29ers! Tripod and a mic are on my Christmas list!!! Thanks for watching!
btw, what gimbal are you using? Video looks stabilized, but not overly stabilized. I'm guessing a 2-axis.
FY wearable gimbal
Great video bro.. Keep them coming.. Have you ride the yeti sb4.5c?
jeremy mauldin Thats an awesome bike and I would love to get one of those bad boys some day
jeremy mauldin, should have some Yeti goodness test rides in the coming weeks!
Great review. Any chance you can do a ride on the new Tallboy 3. It's Hightower like with the 29er/27.5+ but less travel. It would be interesting if you compared the two if possible. All the best.
Darren, this is in the works... I have 4 bike reviews in edit now and the Tallboy is def on the list to demo! Thanks bro!
Another good one man. Love the videos. Santa Cruz makes some beautiful bikes. Wish I had more trails near me.
Thank you. I had a really fun time on this HT. Think I'd go with the Sriracha Red myself... both paint jobs are sic!!!
MTB yumyum lol. I was just looking at them after the video and agree 100%
Thanks, Jason. I've subscribed with both accounts and shared your channel with my mountain biking groups on social media. Keep up the good work.
Jonathan, thank you! Glad you're enjoying the channel and thanks for sharing!
Great video, what size frame were you riding on the Hightower?
5'8" frame size: M
Glad you're doing these objective reviews, trying to keep biases aside. Sick bike. Keep them coming!!
Alex, glad you like em... you've been here from the beginning. Thank you!!!
Great vid! Was trying to decide between Santa Cruz or Yeti. This vid now has me leaning towards the Hightower. Thanks for doing this for us!
My pleasure! Good luck
Hightower is an excellent bike for almost all terrain! Haven't ridden the following yet... plan to this spring!
I just ordered one & your great review just backed up everything I was hoping it will do.
Can't wait to hit the trails at speed & find out for myself!
Congrats! Who did you end up buying from?
MTB yumyum bought it from Summit Cycles in Sydney Australia
coming from a specialized enduro 29'er, wanting something lighter, and more playful. would you suggest the HT or the HTLT. thanks !
I would suggest the Rocky Mountain Instinct.... it is everything you've described and more!!! Between the HT and HTLT, I'd for sure go LT but honestly, the Rocky Mountain is the better bike... demo if you can!
MTB yumyum, how did this compare to the Santa Cruz Bronson you were riding a while back. Considering both these bikes...
The 2 trails in this video are among the most chunky... nothing to crazy here ;)
Thanks for the trail input! 8 LBS bike shops in UT that carry the Intense. Zion Cycles, Wild Rose and Sports Den in SLC.
I'll call Sports Den. Thx!
Nice video, what's your camera setup?
GoPro Hero 4 blk,
I have watch most of your videos.
Haha... all good bikes. I've loved the Hightower but recent sold it for a short travel 29er... good luck!
Lol wife told me I should get a new bike, prob got tired of me researching and talking about it )
Bill Winningham I rode mine with my Fork at 150mm and liked it a lot!
Tallboy 3 is 100% on my list in 29er version... hope to test ride & review in the coming weeks! Glad you like the channel, thank you!
Please ride the 27.5 version and compare them for us. Switchblade 29'r vs Hightower 29'r. Which one is better all around performer?
Nice trails and reviews Any Ibis planned for next videos Mojo 3 vs your 5010 and
And Ripley LS vs the Hightower
Isn't Ripley a better match up for the Tallboy?
That would be a great head-to-head match up... Great idea!
Maybe you would like to get your hands on a Yeti SB5.5! Also a brilliant 29er. Would really love to see your opinion on that bike.
I'll be riding an sb4.5 this week and hope to get my hands on the sb5 5.5 and sb6 in the next month or so!
Would you say this bike is better than your 5010?! It sure sounded like it.
I'm going to Draper this weekend to ride this bike with Jason!
Super excited to ride with you Scott! You're going to love the HT
Thank you!
Did you find this as nimble on the turns and is poppy and fun as the tallboy?
Yeah, it's really close. They're both incredible bikes! If you're never on really rowdy trails that you dont want to get bucked around on, the Tallboy is your bike. If you want to smash the rough stuff, get the Hightower. They're about equally fun on the tight turns and both feel poppy. The tallboy is faster and climbs better and is just a bit more poppy. Good luck!
MTB yumyum thanks!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the Hightower video. It was a fun one to make and I ended up buying the Hightower I liked it so much! All the best!
What size is the frame and how tall you are ? how does it feel ? i both Large size im 179cm hope this will fit just right not to big for me.
5'8" medium
Love me some Hightower! I test rode a 29ner version as well prior to buying my 5010. It's a superb bike and arguably a 1 bike quiver.
Hopefully you'll ride the 27.5+ I'd be interested on your comparison between different wheel sizes
I know right... who knew I'd like the HT so much!
still loving this videos! whenever you get the chance, cannondale bad habit carbon and trek farley ex 9.8... if you get a chance to review them, that would be awesome!
You got it bro!
hello yumyum, many thanks for the reviews, if we compare the Santa to the ex fuel 9.8 , what is the main difference? there is big diff. in the price,
sorry, no big diff. in the price 😉
Another great review!
Thank you!
J, how about a head to head comparison, Hightower against Stumpjumper 29er?
Great idea... I'll try to make it happen!
Is it strange that the thing I like most about Santa Cruz bikes are the paint jobs?
haha, absolutely not. I've always been a sucker for SC paint jobs!
Thank's see you soon
Is the Hightower or the Hightower LT better for a 6'5" dude wanting a solve it all bad ass bike.
Good luck!
Pivot doesn't make a XXL size does it? Anyway so you think the Hightower is not the correct fit?
The Hightower could certainly be the right bike for you... I"m just tell you what my only tall buddy rides as I'm only 5'8" and hate to be giving you my input as I"m much shorter than you. I'd say demo any bikes you're interested in and remain cognoscente of the STA on your test ride of all the bikes.
just subbed! awesome videos, keep it up! could you do a review on the 2017 650b stumpy?
Absolutely! Parker is riding the 2016... don't think they changed much so I'm sure we'll have a review of his bike here soon!
Hey, you should some time review the 2017 sant Cruz nomad, I'm thinking about buying one and it would be cool to havhave someone else's opinion. Thanks!
Got a Nomad lined up and should be uploaded to UA-cam before the end of the year! Pumped to ride the Nomad!
Glad you like the channel... thank you!
What trail is this? (just bought a hightower based on this video, I'm local)
Filmed in Corner Canyon. Jacobs Ladder, Ghost Falls and Canyon Hollow in this edit. Great trails. I might be starting a local group ride every other week or so if you're interested?! Let me know!
That was fun to watch! Great job
Thank you, glad you liked it! Stick around... lots more videos to come including head-to-head bike reviews!!!
What size did you ride? I'm 184cm tall and my leg is 84. L or XL?? Thanks
5'8" on a Medium
MTB yumyum alright but i'm in between L and XL should i take the bigger??
Hey, where's that trail located?
I'm kinda thinking out loud
If I were to get a Hightower with the 150mm, its quite a bit of travel around Houston Texas, but if I were to take my bike with me to Colorado or Mexico in the future I would like this Hightower and its gemoetry for it
It would be great with those specs and 140 mm travel so I'm really considering it still
The Hightower if purchased with the 29 inch tires (which I prefer anyway) actually comes with 140mm fork instead which is a bit better for what i willl be riding
This bike is compatible with 27.5+ also
But you have to change this flip chip deal to raise the bottom bracket height a bit
And also use a 150mm fork according to some to keep the same head angle
My question is
What if I were to use the bike with 29" tires
Keep the 140mm fork
And flip the chip on "high" as if I changed the fork and wheels to "27.5+ " mode
Wouldn't it give it a steeper head tube angle thus making it a bit better for cross country types of climbs and trails around Texas?
Thanks for your input in advance !
Yeah, I see what you're saying... Your BB would be much higher and really change the way the bike rides. I've had my fork at 150mm and really enjoyed it. You might actually consider the Tallboy... it's much more capable than you might think!!!
MTB yumyum thanks for the input
I do also think the bb height will be too tall
I'm so hard headed though I just love the new White and blue color of the 2018 highTowers I might just get it anyways and sacrifice a little bit of climbing performance for some more confident descending
Coming from a hard tail 29er XC BIKE I do notice a massive difference when climbing on my brothers stump jumper 3" fattie bike
Rad review. Cant wait to shred Jacobs to Ghost fall on the same bike.
For real... this bike handles JL with much grace! Hahaha, incredible bike!
Was that an evening ride? Your shadow adds to the video, a bit.
Did you notice more, less , or same amount of pedal strikes compared to the 2017 Trek Fuel EX 9.8 29er?
I rode these bikes on the same trails and had 2 pedal strikes as I recall on the Fuel EX and none on the Hightower.
MTB yumyum thanks
Which do you like more Hightower or Yeti 5.5?
I've not yet ridden the SB5.5 how to get a demo in the next few weeks!
I was between the Bronson and the Hightower for my next ride. Your video really has helped in making up my mind.
I know right?! Both tackle the same type of trail in very different ways. Glad the video's could help you out bro!
Great review. I've always wanted a Santa Cruz.
Glad you like the channel. This might be Santa Cruz's most versatile bike yet!
Great riding, thanks for sharing my friend!
Tasos K, it's my pleasure... glad you like it!
