MaCenna, my grandmother put on an addition with an almost identical roof to yours. In that valley where the old roof meets the new roof she had a never ending leak that eventually rotted everything and cost so much money! The water literally pooled in that valley because it had no where to go. My heartfelt advise is have a roofer look at that valley while it is in framing phase and determine if there is anything you can do in advance to prevent any leak in the future. I hope this advise helps you.
Omg I literally saw that little area and thought how is this functional? Especially if they have snow or rain?! I’m so glad you shared your experience with this because I just thought I didn’t know anything about roofs so it’s probably fine lol..
The same thing happened to a friend of mine when she added a new addition. It was because of the way the roof peaks met. Constantly leaking no matter how many times she fixed it.
It’s like someone tried Drew’s method of faking the leather effect couch by painting it!! 😂😂 love the series Macenna. Doing a new build but you have taught me so much and Drew too!! 🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪
You are saving so much money by doing a lot of the work yourself and have also been reusing materials from the existing house. Therefore I say get the slab that you fell in love with. Sometimes you’ve got to spend big on the things you love and the kitchen counter tops are the biggest feature of the heart of the home. I’m loving watching your journey and am excited for you. Kindest regards, Catherine from New Zealand xxx
I agree, but you also need to know when to stop, because you can end up "treating" yourself with so many expensive pieces, that you exceed your budget by a lot. If we're talking about 2-3 more expensive pieces, it's okay, if you end up paying twice as much (or more) than you initially intended for half of your purchases, then you have a problem. :))
Omg, right?! That's what I came here to say as well but then saw your comment. MaCenna, you've worked soooo hard and you have saved soooo much money and have been super conscientious of repurposing materials that I never thought it could. You deserve it!! Get it!!!!
I don't think I've ever been so invested in something more than your house reno. I have literally been refreshing for last hour. Thanks for sharing every single detail xx
You could also have them make you a cutting board when they cut out the sink. Our countertop company did that as a free gift to us & it’s one of my favorite parts of our kitchen now
I'm from Germany so it's Sunday evening right now. I always tell my boyfriend how exciting I am to go to bed because that means I get to watch another video of yours! I just love them!
Try to get the leftover pieces after your slabs are fabricated. You can make cutting boards, hot plates, risers and probably other fun DIY’s. You’ll likely pay for the whole slab anyway. I enjoy you and your mom’s enthusiasm! I drew and built my dream home recently too and mother helped me too! I was as overjoyed with each step as you seem to be. What a blessing to be able to design everything just the way you want it!
This house is stunning - the way you have reclaimed and reused materials from the existing house is just beautiful. Can’t wait to see you tackle the dumpster couch. The Sorry Girls made a tufted upholstered head board for Gabi DeMar that you should check out! Getting the Sunday notification that your new video is up is the best!! Have a great week!
Can't wait to see what kind of surgery she is going to give to this couch! No pain, no gain. She pick up the broken crying piece. It will be her baby, because she is amazing and so she can. Love this girl!
Remember, MaCenna, this is your dream project! If you're going to splurge on anything for this home, this should be it. The island is the one piece that will be prominent and seen every single day. That slab is speaking to you and I say answer YES!
I love that you picked brown fantasy quartzite, I have this thru my house in kitchen, kitchenette, vanities, even shower curbs….just love it! You will too! The build looks awesome, I’m so excited for you both!
Im so happy you share everything, i really feel apart of this journey 😅😅Goodluck with all reno's ahead. So amazing to see how far you've come with the house in these months.
Hey MaCenna! I’m a designer in Nashville, I really love using Cambria-they have a lot of engineered quartz counters that simulate or look a lot like real stone!! I would totally check them out for the granite piece. In general a quartz countertop is always going to be cheaper because it’s an engineered material- but omg you can really get some beautiful pieces.
Your Mom maybe questions the ‘we’ but I bet she ends up helping you! You have a great mother daughter relationship. “Chip off the old block. Apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.” So sweet.
Encouraging progress. Difficult to tell from drone shot but at 13:06, the 'Y' valley where the two sides of the old roof connect to the new roof, is there a drain or sufficient slope to prevent water collection from those three peaks? How is water channeled out of that low spot?
@@juliegammello6741 Perhaps from having watched sooooo many seasons of 'This Old House,' this addition isn't in keeping with what I've seen Tom, Norm and crew do on a similar structure. Also, the low-pitch style appears more 'suburban ranch' and doesn't really reflect the lines of the original house, IMO.
This was my first thought as well. Came to search the comments to see if it was already asked. Glad MaCenna is already on it (of course she is). :-) Good flashing and proper slope of the valley should take care of it (really good and proper because we get some pretty heavy rains here), but good to ask about to be sure.
My parents renovated the kitchen in our family home about 15 years ago and did soapstone for the counters. It’s held up absolutely beautifully and they’re still so happy with their decision. So excited to see how yours looks once installed! Can’t wait to see it with the contrasting island stone as well
Never disappointed, each week that I watch the updates. You can visualize how things will look now since the roof and walls have been put up. I'm anxious to see what sofa you use and I especially love the chairs you were able to find. I love the slab in the picture it really is beautiful but the one in the showroom is also beautiful and I hope it's not as expensive as you think. Way to go MaCenna, your journey is our journey.
in my "print reading for architecture" class we are studying framing at the moment, so it's very cool to see how your framing is being done and to hear all the vocab words (like header, fire stops, fascia, etc) i just learned lol. congrats on finalizing your move in date!
LOVE LOVE the stones you have picked out for the counter tops and island. You have saved so much money on all of the stuff you have done yourself so spoil yourself and get that slab for the island.
Loving the selections!! looking at you drawing the cut-offs on the slab, it looks pretty "exact". Ask your fabricator if he can make that work. Usually you need a bit of wiggle room around and in between pieces for them to work on the edges!
In love with the slabs! the soap stone is my favorite. The one for the kitchen is gorgeous, sometimes it cost a little extra money to get your dream kitchen and is worth it if its gonna be in the house for many years to come.
Slab and price - just get the one you want. Honestly. It sounds like you don’t have a backup or almost as good for comparison purposes. You will own this for decades and every time you see it you will be happy. I wanted a very specific countertop for my kitchen. I searched and searched and eventually found it. My tastes aren’t as expensive as yours (I think I was a 4), but no regrets. I am sure I looked at over 100 slabs and my second choice was a distant second and would always be a compromise.
We moved last Dec. In a new build, never had a brand new house. We spent most of our money on the kitchen and huge island. I think your money is well invested in kitchens and bathrooms. Do what makes you happy, you won't be disappointed.
I love the dark gray soapstone slab!!! It looks BEAUTIFUL and I’d love to see it next to the white/gray one you liked too! I can totally see those pairing really well together! While I personally LOVED the one you showed at 19:47, I really do like the soap stones one you picked out! I say get it even if it’s pricey. It’s an investment and if they give you that good feeling, do it!
My goodness MaCenna, 1st December, you go girl. the chairs are super, and that sofa, wow. But most importantly, CHRISTMAS AT XO MACENNA HQ IS GOING TO BE EEEEEPIC 🧡🍂🤗🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳
I totally get the obsession with getting things right. The regret later is so not worth it. So be it soapstone or the roof, I’m so glad you always put your foot down and yet, go with what’s feasible. I love your process. Thanks for sharing this entire series with us. It’s inspiring and uplifting!
Pleeeeease do a detailed video on how to reupholster those fabulous chairs!! You explain everything with such ease, and I just happen to have a chair to reupholster! Love the vid!
I am totally in love with the one you picked. I have expensive taste too but get what you want now because if you don't you'll regret it. This is your first home & you want it to be exactly the way you want it. I'm almost as excited as if I was moving in! Can't wait to see how beautifully you decorate it.
Kinsley is by far the cutest little pooch on the planet! You know what would be super sweet- to design and built Kinsley a mini cottage doggy house from some of the leftover wood and things from the cottage and on December 1st move-in day, put a little "Welcome home Kinsley," sign on it. It would be super cute to place it in the backyard or even on the porch. The windows and doors are looking so good. How exciting to finally have the framing underway! Can't wait for next week's update. Thank you MaCenna for sharing your dream journey with us. :)
Some of my biggest house remodeling regrets were not buying the thing I really wanted because I wanted to save money even though we actually did have the budget for it. Buy what you love and won’t regret, as long as you can pay cash!❤️
Love the slab selections! Totally agreed with the choices there! And LOVING your slab cuts. Especially the rose color and amber/rust feature. Can't wait to see them installed!
My eyes are popping out of my head watching and taking note of all details! This is all soooo interesting to me. Who else wishes they had friends who they could discuss renovation and interior design with 24/7 :P hahaha
I loveeee the one you said "that's a pretty little thing" to! The one you're in love with is, personally, not my style and a little too busy for me, but I trust your design style and eye and know that it'll look so beautiful in the end!
I totally get your excitement for picking the right stone and moving it around so the veins hit the right spot. The one you picked is to die for!! Hope you find the perfect one for you!! :)
Get THE slab you want!!! I fell in love with an exotic Italian marble that EVERYONE lost their minds on me saying marble in the kitchen is horrible… I loooove it and every single person that sees it is in awe. You do you and know the areas that you save in thrifting LETS you get the slabs you love.
Girl..that black slab is glorious!!!..and out of all u looked at..I agree with the one u picked..I did not like the yellow in the others..I love that slab u want..it’s soo warm and clean looking..glad they fixed the roof..it looks great now.can’t wait to see walls go up!!
Macenna, there are those who do not like the choices you make, but please remember that this is your project and not theirs. I would wish that people would be more helpful like many here with their helpful comments. Dissing your choices is down right hateful! And by the way, I love the marble slab that you chose. The burnished orange/copper in the slab will coordinate with the copper decor pieces that you will use. You are doing just great as you proceed renovating your little cottage!
So beautiful! You're definitely my #1 UA-cam favorite. I look forward to your videos so much! Keep the ideas, projects & content coming, it makes my week!
What an amazing woman you are. I used to watch you DIY in your apartment now I'm seeing you plan your home. You have great business skills. Project manager, professional curated shopper, furniture refinisher, etc. I could see it now MaCenna's Reno Adventures 🤩
Hey gf! I used to sell stone slabs. The higher the level, the more expensive. Level 7 means that the price per sq. ft. is probably going to be quite expensive; so in some cases, the most expensive. I've seen slabs at $200+ per sq. ft., installed. It just depends on the slab itself, where it's from, the size, the rarity, the demand, how strong or sensitive it is to fabricate. etc,.
I’m often so disappointed with people’s generic choices, even though it’s absolutely not my business, HOWEVER, this slabs are GORGEOUS!!! I can’t wait to see it all come together 🤩🤩🤩
Omg I love this so much! It's not even just the build but your positive attitude even in the rain. The relationship with your Mom, Romeo, your Dad. Just a poster for gettin sh"t done! Can't wait for what's next and move- in on Dec. 1st. 💪👑🙏❤️
Absolutely LOVE your stone choices! Coming from someone that took for ever to decide on bathroom tile + marble....go with what you fell in love with. You will be looking at it every single day. (Also really enjoyed your video edit of you talking us through photoshop!) It is such a joy tuning in each week to your journey!
You never cease to amaze me with how talented you are! Wow, just wow. Thank you for sharing this journey with all of us, your time is recognized & appreciated. xo from Oregon
MaCenna! Could you do a video where you show how you take apart your vintage windows and restring the weights? I also have a bunch of old windows in my house that I'm wanting to refinish. I totally trust your advice on the best way to do it. 😊
Honestly, I say get the expensive dream worthy slab! Here are my reasons: 1. It’s beautiful 2. You will regret buying anything else 3. You save(d) so much money by buying thrifted items. Hell, you even found free items on the side of the road! As well as you have reused and repurposed so much of the original house. Sooooo I think it’s worth it to splurge in certain areas. 4.You deserve that countertop! I have been loving this series since day 1! I can’t wait to see everything finished and come to life as you imagined but I also don’t want the videos of the house to end.
Oh !!!! So divine the stones! I love that rust veining, love Soapstone, the vanity, the chairs & that sofa from the dumpster & the main sofa......can’t wait to see what’s next!!!
More and more exciting things happening!! I wonder how many videos are going back and forth to Romeo each day-I’m sure y’all are keeping the airwaves busy. I love the soapstone you chose, but I love lots more white whenever I see soapstone slabs. Those beautiful light fixtures were something I was screaming at you to buy! lol
I look forward to these videos all week! You really inspire me with your enthusiasm and drive to learn and create things that I would find so daunting! The soapstone slab is beautiful. Also looking forward to seeing you redo those sofas Keep it up Macenna, we're all rooting for you!
I love soapstone! I gave my counters a face-lift with counter paint last year and after much research on what "look" I wanted I decided on soapstone. It turned out great and I love it so much that when we redo our kitchen that is what the counters will be. It just defines everything else.
@@XOMaCenna You are VERY welcome. He said the Universal frame is hardwood, both screwed and glued (using both makes it so it won’t come apart AND doesn’t squeak). The filler is high grade and the fabric is, as well. Similar with Lee. BUT, for the price, you are getting the same sofa. You will want a new sofa before you can wear out the Universal one. He really likes Lee. But says they think their stuff is made of gold 😆 I hope this helps you a lot.
I'm glad you're enjoying yourself throughout this process so many do not out off the shear overload of decisions and details but we do this for a living and love it too your home is goin to be beyond words you are so talented and i love your and your mommas energy❤️
I love reading the comments, as much as I do watching the video. The people who are following this series are super diverse and dole out excellent advice. When this is all said and done, you should create a RENO 101 book with photos and tips and put some of the comments that helped you along the way. I'd totally buy it.
Wow MaCenna, this house is turning out so awesome, yes there is a lot of work involved but the end result will be stunning. Love all of the DIY's you're doing and how much you have reused the materials that you saved. I can't wait to see the end result it will be so amazing. Thanks for another wonderful video, and as always so much fun to see your mama, she is an amazing artist, and I can say this because I am an artist and draw and paint a lot as well. Looking forward to your next video, sending love and hugs, bye for now.
Your excitment for your countertops was so joyous to watch!! We recently redid our kitchen and we put in a gorgeous gorgeous 6 x 9 island that sits 6. I love the movement of our show stopper too. We went with a Calacatta White Macabus Quartzite that has a river flowing type movement to it that I can't stop staring at. It was also super pricey, but so so worth it! Your peice reminds me a lot of ours. We used our leftovers in our bathroom vanities too. I was also drawn to honed soapstone and I really wanted it but we had to stay within a budget so ended up with peacock emerald black granite. It works well in the space. I'm so excited to see how your kitchen turns out! Love from another Texas gal.
Have you considered using a sliver of the stone slab in the recessed shower shelf you want your framer to put in?? that may look really classy and tie into the bathroom vanity stone :) love this series!
Stunning slabs! So I’m pretty sure when we looked at countertops, we were told that they can create the honed/ leathered finish on polished slabs (in case wanted the granite matte!)
You are so talented! Love the relationship with your Mom.
I love how you had the piece of paper behind your back... Your Contractor is lucky to have you!
❤️✨❤️
Girl..that black slab is glorious!!!..and out of all u looked at..I agree with the one u picked..I did not like the yellow in the others..I love that slab u want..it’s soo warm and clean looking..glad they fixed the roof..it looks great now.can’t wait to see walls go up!!
I absolutely love watching all of your videos! You have so much energy and your happiness is infectious.
Such an exciting expeience for you! Thank you for taking us along. Truly enjoying tagging along in this series!
That dumpster dive couch could be so beautiful and perfect for the house, so excited to see what you are able to do with it. ❤️
What an amazing woman you are. I used to watch you DIY in your apartment now I'm seeing you plan your home. You have great business skills. Project manager, professional curated shopper, furniture refinisher, etc. I could see it now MaCenna's Reno Adventures 🤩
The slabs are gorgeous!! Works of art! Hope it works out for you.
Hey gf! I used to sell stone slabs. The higher the level, the more expensive. Level 7 means that the price per sq. ft. is probably going to be quite expensive; so in some cases, the most expensive. I've seen slabs at $200+ per sq. ft., installed. It just depends on the slab itself, where it's from, the size, the rarity, the demand, how strong or sensitive it is to fabricate. etc,.
I admire your attitude and energy! Can’t wait til December 1st!
I’m often so disappointed with people’s generic choices, even though it’s absolutely not my business, HOWEVER, this slabs are GORGEOUS!!! I can’t wait to see it all come together 🤩🤩🤩
I look forward to sundays because I get to see what was done to the house that week. I'm so glad for you.
Your mom and you have SUCH an amazing relationship
I can’t believe you are not at 1M subscribers yet! Love your stuff. The slab is not my style but I say go for it if you can splurge on what you love.
You and your Mom and hilarious together! Always an adventure with you two haha!
Love the slabs that you picked out. GREAT JOB!!!!!
Here are my reasons:
1. It’s beautiful
2. You will regret buying anything else
I can’t wait to see everything finished and come to life as you imagined but I also don’t want the videos of the house to end.
love the slabs so much and I really hope you get to find the primary bathroom vanity and the couch as soon as possible.
That granite is gorgeous! I hope thats the one, because I can really visualise the kitchen with that stone
Cute chairs! Good find. I like the grey stone way more than the beige.
This is just getting more and more exciting! Can’t wait to see the couch get a makeover. Love those chairs too!
Those beautiful light fixtures were something I was screaming at you to buy! lol
Can’t wait until we start seeing decorating videos!!!
I love how excited that you are while building your dream home! YAY!!!
I look forward to these videos all week! You really inspire me with your enthusiasm and drive to learn and create things that I would find so daunting! The soapstone slab is beautiful. Also looking forward to seeing you redo those sofas Keep it up Macenna, we're all rooting for you!
I love that you love the slabs and I hope you get them.
I love soapstone! I gave my counters a face-lift with counter paint last year and after much research on what "look" I wanted I decided on soapstone. It turned out great and I love it so much that when we redo our kitchen that is what the counters will be. It just defines everything else.
Love the way the stone u picked out fun shopping with and your mom !!!
Such a good series indeed. Girl you are doing it!!! So proud and happy for you and how far you’ve come. Can’t wait to see it all finished. 🤗
My husband was a sales rep for both Lee and Universal. He said “hands down” he would buy the one from Universal. Just FYI.
It might be helpful if he could explain why. She's so all about the details. 😊
omg thank you!!!!!
But says they think their stuff is made of gold 😆
I hope this helps you a lot.
Wouldn't the down filled lose its shape over time?
@@kimberlymounivong506 Actually, all you have to do is “fluff” it up.
Love those slabs! I can see your vision coming together!
I love the slabs you picked out. I’ve already watched your videos of your kitchen and I’ve gotten so much inspiration! Love it love it love it❤
Have you considered using a sliver of the stone slab in the recessed shower shelf you want your framer to put in?? that may look really classy and tie into the bathroom vanity stone :) love this series!
I, for one, am thoroughly enjoying this series. Thank you for sharing such great content MaCenna. You're the sweetest.
I could stay all day looking at the stones.. I say go for what you love... I love that door and side lights, in love with it..
You go MaCenna!! Everything looks great. Love the shower design.
Stunning slabs! So I’m pretty sure when we looked at countertops, we were told that they can create the honed/ leathered finish on polished slabs (in case wanted the granite matte!)
