Agreed. I also found the second watch to be just as interesting as the first, as you know whats happening, so things that were confusing the first time makes sense the second time through, and it's fun making all those connections.
@@xyex 24:32 I just noticed another detail. As the boys are telling Armstrong they weren't thinking of sneaking into the 5th lab, Al shakes his head 'yes' while Ed shakes his head 'no.' 🤣 Can't believe I never saw that before!
Feel like their expressions in the thumb nail capture what I was thinking on my first watch: "The boys need a Philosopher's Stone to get their bodies back. They now know how a stone is made. It's only episode 7. WTF is the rest of the show about?!"
@@theninjabird9510 whati stated was very vague though, you can basically infer that their father was missing from the first 5 episodes and that there was big a reason why he left. The fact that both brothers had basic knowledge about alchemy in their childhood makes you connect the dots that someone in their family knows alchemy... Just watching the opening would give you this info... So not a spoiler...
This show plays with a lot of references to the real-world history of alchemy. For example, while they didn't usually use code as we understand it today, medieval and Renaissance alchemists did use a lot of metaphor and poetic language to intentionally make their notes difficult for laypeople to understand. So for example, a trained alchemist would know that "green lion" (which Ed mentions in this episode) means a mixture of nitric acid and hydrochloric acid, but anybody else would be confused. Another historical nod in that same scene is the reference to "Flamel's Codex"; Nicholas Flamel was a 14th century scribe. In the 17th century, legends suddenly sprang up that he was an alchemist and had made a philosopher's stone, and alchemical texts claimed to have been written by him started circulating. The symbol on Ed's coat is actually called Flamel's Cross and is from an illustration in those writings of a crucified snake, symbolizing a whole bunch of things, some of them spoilery. Anyway, apparently in the FMA world Flamel really was an alchemist and those writings are a legit alchemy text. There's even sort of a historical precedent for the philosopher's stone being made of people. Francis Bacon, famous for being one of the first people in Europe to describe and argue for something like the modern scientific method, argued that human blood might be a good starting material from which to try to make a philosopher's stone.

The Flamel's Cross, or Crucified Snake, is a symbol that goes back to the time of the Exodus. While the Israelites were wandering the desert, they were afflicted by snakes who bit and sickened many of them. God instructed Moses to raise a bronze snake on a stick to cure them. This is seen as the precursor to the Crucifixion of Christ, as well as the origin of the Greek symbols of the Caduceus and the Staff of Asclepius. The Caduceus is two snakes coiled around a winged staff, which is the symbol used for modern medicine, and the Staff is a single snake coiled around a rod and is also used in some medical symbolism.
It's never talked about in the Anime, but all state alchemists write their research notes in code, Marcoh's is a cookbook as shown, but others we know of are Mustangs, which is disguised as a Date Book of women's names, and Ed who writes his notes as a travelogue
8:57 i feel like they didn't notice this joke of Ed being small, everyone has to move sideways to go forward while Ed just casually walks since he can fit
The truth of Marco's research shows one of those sneaky applications of the law of equivalent exchange. As per the voiceover at the start of earlier episodes "in accordance with this law, human transmutation is strictly forbidden, for what could equal the value of a human soul?" A normal person thinks: "Nothing I have to trade would equal the value of a human soul, better not try it." A sick bastard thinks: "I can get my hands on a human soul... what would equal it's value if I were to use it as an alchemical ingredient?" The stone does not actually allow you to bypass the law of equivalent exchange. Those feats of alchemy are paid for in full.
@@DaDunge If we were to go with the idea that a "true stone" would circumvent the law of equivalent exchange, then it is fundamentally impossible for one to exist at all. Seeing as you won't have the true stone to begin with, what exactly do you sacrifice to gain the ability to never have to sacrifice for anything ever again? You would need to satisfy equivalent exchange for any and all possible transmutations all at once. You are not going to manage that ever. So that rules out producing a "true stone" via alchemy. As for the natural generation of a true stone, the show makes it quite clear that the law of equivalent exchange is not limited to alchemy but generally applies to all natural (and some arguably unnatural) processes (it's a fundamental law of the universe, the alchemists just bargain with it more extensively and more directly than anyone else), thus we can safely rule out the natural generation of a true stone on the same grounds. conclussion: a "true stone" as you have described cannot exist within the logic of FMA. It would actually break the logic of the setting.

I love that you’re using Armstrong’s MOST SUSPICIOUS flex constantly. That is such a good placeholder. XD So here’s why the kids are not known throughout the entire military. A State Alchemist is of the same authority as a Major. And those outrank Privates, Corporals, Warrant Officers, Sargents, Lieutenants, AND Captains. I imagine I’m missing others but that is a TON of militaristic authority. And because of the knowledge required to get the quick promotion to that level, you are obviously INCREDIBLY well funded. And they gave that kind of authority to a child. Ed doesn’t have a staff or anything, but the authority alone makes the lesser ranks give him high respect. (Not a good look for the military to say to every lesser rank a child completely outclasses you.) With the exception of Mustang’s crew who are more or less their stand-in family in the military. Considering Ed’s direct superior is Mustang. The higher rank, the longer your leash. And that’s why they can talk so frankly and openly with Colonel Hughes. (Who is just a family guy in general and looks for any excuse to insert someone in his family like Sheska.) The philosopher’s stone is…a REALLY dark truth. When it bypasses the laws of equivalent exchange and SERIOUSLY boosts your abilities AND gets you to take actions you ordinarily could never. All that is a very useful thing to try and mass produce for stronger soldiers. And least we forget Emestris is the equivalent of Nazi Germany. We might be rooting for the protagonists of the story, but these uncomfortable realities is the equivalent of being patriotic without realizing right next door to you there could be a secret laboratory run by a mad man trying to figure out if you torture one twin does the other feel the identical pain. Forget that “doctor’s” name but I do remember researching him. And I think Dr. Marcoh is more or less a “good” version of said doctor. And now begins the 5th laboratory arc. Another arc I prefer in the 2003 version for the extended aspect of it, (and other things) but this is a VERY important section of the show.

Fun fact, the coded book was a reference to how historical alchemists kept their notes. They would use words like sulfur, salt, and mercury to hide concepts dealing with the soul, body, and mind respectively and would use specific language to encode their ideas. Since alchemy was occultic in nature it was better to hide what you were studying. For example the green lion of metallurgical alchemy talked about in this episode is a symbol used to illustrate one of two things (its not really clear as the notes were always encrypted for a reason) but it was usually either to talk about plant life in its ability to create energy, or the purification of matter to create purity, usually lead into gold.

It is a delight that you guys are reviewing this show but man is it torture having to wait for all you’re going to discover. The pacing and plot structure are both excellent such that almost every episode is either a reveal or schadenfreude.
Something to note about that “bunch of words” when they start talking about “green lion” and “Flamel’s Codex,” both of those are real things. The Green Lion swallowing the sun, and Flamel, the supposed creator of the Philosopher’s stone in real life. Even Ed’s coat has Flamel’s cross on the back. Real alchemy is really cool to research on, and even a surface level reading can be really interesting, as it is also a study into philosophy as much as it is into chemistry.
Chris Sabat, Armstrong's voice actor, is the cowardly commander on AOT who ordered the cannon bombardment on Eren, Mikasa and Armin when Eren first turned into the Attack Titan. There are quite a few other voice actors the shows have in common but you have yet to see them. Most notably, the voice actor for Mikasa is coming. Also, Riza Hawkeye is Momo Yaoyorouzu in My Hero.
Alright Kenny and Montana here’s a breakdown of the stones when it comes to my understanding. I may be wrong but I think it’s accurate. A stone can probably be created from one or two souls, but it wouldn’t be as strong as a soul made with tens or hundreds of people. The stones that disintegrated after the defeat of the possessor of the stone were made with a low amount of human lives, stronger ones and pull more feats and last longer. They’re essentially batteries and the souls are the fuel. If you put more fuel in the battery, the more powerful it becomes.
Loved your reactions to this episode, the working out what everything means is exactly why I wanted you guys to watch this series. I'm also loving how much Kenny is trying to notice things!
I don't know why, but this is the first time I'm seeing the little art of you guys in the uniforms in the beginning. It looks GREAT!!! Definitely just like you guys. Shout out to whoever drew that!!
7:42 Interesting thought, and it illustrates one of the points they made about alchemy a bit clearer - an alchemist needs to understand something on the atomic level to transmute it correctly. Kind of like Yaoyarozu in My Hero Academia. In order to reconstruct the library, they would need to know every detail of the contents already, including what books were in there and what was written in them. Which would make reconstructing the library a moot point, as they need it to learn the contents of some of the books. The could probably reconstruct a book, but without knowing what was written in it, it would just be pages with ink blobs or random words.
Interesting side note, an exhibit on real life publications about alchemy from the middle ages up to the 1700s (including writing by Isaac Newton who researched alchemy) is currently at the library of Princeton University in New Jersey. Some of it is in code or represented through pictures of mythological creatures.
This episode was the final straw for me really connecting with Edward’s character. I already loved how deeply and openly emotional he was (not really the norm for a character as arrogant and fiery as he is, it shows that they really put thought into his character rather than looking at the tropes people happen to find entertaining), but his dedication and intelligence are also huge standout traits. Especially the intelligence part, that’s another thing you don’t often get with the loud and bratty type character.
I last watched FMA 10 years ago. It's so cool watching it again and noticing the different voice actors playing different roles. I knew a lot of them early on, but watching this video I just realized that Maes Hughes is Krillin from DragonBall Z. I literally heard him talking when he hired the bookworm and shouted, "KRILLIN!"😂Of course I immediately verified it on Google
All I'll say about this show...for this and future episodes... (even if this comment doesn't seem to have a lot to do with this episode at face value), death means something..it actually means something and is remembered for a long long time. For show so focused on life and death, being able to possibly bring back people from the dead...it means quite a bit. So take any talk about death pretty seriously I'd say while watching.
You two have yourselves as Roy and Hawkeye in your into!! Why dont you guys cosplay as those 2 if you want? :) might be easier and wouldn't require a wig or dye for Montana.
7:20 ... wait... I see it. Lust's face is a lot wider than yours, but you pull off the expression with a similar shape of face. Also, your hair has the volume and curl. You almost look like a friendly Lust. I like your caricature in the intro, though. You could cosplay as yourself in the amestrian military.
It’s actually not completely unheard of to encode things into a recipe. There’s an entire programming language dedicated to this. It’s called Chef. The Hello World Cake can be baked into a real cake, too.
It’s funny that the Philospher’s Stone DOES have a cost. It costs 1 soul per transmutation which is why for it to me useful in any capacity it takes hundreds of thousands of humans.
It’s unfortunate but this show does reflect aspects of real life. One minor aspect Ed is a child who has joined the military and in our reality, there are kids all over the planet that fight in wars. Even our country that indoctrinates kids through jrotc or normalize it by having military have streaming channels directed towards kids, having teens join as early as age 17. There is alot to break down and alot of this that border on I understand why and that is not ok at all. Im definitely happy this is a tasteful show that can bring up thought provoking points for conversation if people are interested in that. People can just strictly watch and enjoy from an entertainment standpoint and that is perfectly ok as well. This is a great show.
kinda introverted and uncomfortable for a few decades. it's always awkward for me to greet somebody, but i've learned from a few sources, "yo" works. Hughes uses it here, another show I watch uses it a lot, but you always gotta raise your hand in acknowledgement.

18:45 when the road to what you want turns out to be a chasm that you can't cross, even though you can see what you're looking for right in front of your eyes.
Edward only has a lot of money cus he only ever spends it on board, travel, and food.
It is a delight that you guys are reviewing this show but man is it torture having to wait for all you’re going to discover. The pacing and plot structure are both excellent such that almost every episode is either a reveal or schadenfreude.
kenny and montana you two really love each other. I admire that so much. Another great reaction as usual. Keep it up
I like how small details will lead to that very moment soon enough 16:19
Fun fact: Vic Mignogna the voice of Ed also voiced Eld Jinn in AoT.
Flammel didn't create the initial philosophers stone he suposedly created the second. The first one was created by an Arab philosopher hence the name.
So it was Vegeta!!!
I love that Jean is also Jean
Outch. I forgot how many stuff this episode foreshadowed. Major heartache coming soon.
Hahaha the way she called you " chef boy." The sass lmao.
Kenny sees the cosplay potential at least partially because he very much WANTS to see the cosplay happen lol.
Al never said anything about being around for 'millions of years' that is just something you manufactured in your own head.
You two have yourselves as Roy and Hawkeye in your into!! Why dont you guys cosplay as those 2 if you want? :) might be easier and wouldn't require a wig or dye for Montana.
Montana out here really tryna act like we ain't seen her Tiktoks just watching Kenny from the couch 😏
7:20 ... wait... I see it. Lust's face is a lot wider than yours, but you pull off the expression with a similar shape of face. Also, your hair has the volume and curl. You almost look like a friendly Lust.
I like your caricature in the intro, though. You could cosplay as yourself in the amestrian military.
love the ''MOST SUSPESIUS'' clip that you keep using xD, so funny
MOST SUSPISICOUS! You guys should keep using that effect.
It’s actually not completely unheard of to encode things into a recipe. There’s an entire programming language dedicated to this. It’s called Chef.
The Hello World Cake can be baked into a real cake, too.
Please keep using the Most Suspicious
Chris sabat aka all might/Armstrong also played kitz the Captain that was gonna kill eren, mikasa and armin in Aot season 1
YOUR BEHAVIOR IS *MOST SUSPICIOUS*
Montana, you should feel IMMENSELY flattered your fiance thinks you look like Lust 😏
Next episode we meet the best character in the series. I love you Barry!
25:58 .....I can relate 😅
9:03 A hoarder's grave.
Lust is Laura Bailey (kid Trunks in DBZ, Abby Last of us part II, Vex and Jester and Imogen from Critial Role)
Also serana in skyrim
Flamel also mentioned to create the filosofer stone in Harry Potter,
Uhhh casually?
Cliffhanger Counter: 1
Ahahahahahaha! 🤣
...it's a good counter to have.
It’s funny that the Philospher’s Stone DOES have a cost. It costs 1 soul per transmutation which is why for it to me useful in any capacity it takes hundreds of thousands of humans.
Okay, but Montana’s hair today is just 🔥
omg the Hamilton shirt!
ayy we back with fmab
fun fact, the voice actors of mustang and lust are married
i'm glad someone recognizes you should resemble who you cosplay, unless it's funny
13:14 just noticed who that guy is omg
Just realized since I was just watching kenichi but the narrator is akisame
Right!
Damn, you're right. It is Akisame!
nah montana should cosplay winry fs
For all you harry potter fans ed mentioned Nicolas flamel
I agree Kenny.
Cosplay Lust when ?
Montana ?
2:57 🌟 pretty good
Well say this your really close 👏
If you guys love science, I think you'd love the anime Dr. Stone!
As "early". Early is under 14
kinda introverted and uncomfortable for a few decades. it's always awkward for me to greet somebody, but i've learned from a few sources, "yo" works. Hughes uses it here, another show I watch uses it a lot, but you always gotta raise your hand in acknowledgement.
Did Kenny just predict the entire plot by episode 7
11:39 "flawless"
i like "perfect" from the other anime, dunno why
Yea ishval possible cause of a philosopher stone…👀 who knows….. most suspicious indeed
I would once again like to recommend Hunter Hunter after Full Metal
Two words to describe what Amestris did in Ishval: Unit 731. I'm so sorry to everyone that looks into what I meant by this, by the way.
23:30. This is hilarious
If I could make a suggestion for a reaction video, you guys should watch Inside Man from 2006. It's a Spike Lee film about a New York City bank robbery staring Denzel Washington, Clive Owen, Jodie Foster, Christopher Plummer, Willem Dafoe, and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
What's the rest of the show about? They don't know what they're in for.
She's one of my childhood crush in anime coz she cannot be corrupted by money nor fame..
But ep4 fmab messed-up my mind ....
She has a great wavy hair, if she would dye it black, wear black dress and put some visible make up, she could make a great Lust cosplay, do you agree guys, I can see it, who agrees?
equivalent exchange...
Sheska got more time in the '03. this is fine too
Funny thing, your characterture of yourselves in those uniforms, one of you looks a lot like a character that is introduced later.
MOST SUSPICIOUS!!! XD LOL
Is Montana alright? She seemed a bit under the weather ..
You guys are adorable with one another. Just so you know.
Lmao Kenny 7:20
14:14 Too bad I ain’t readin’ em
Alchemists use codes in writing.
Mustang uses names of women
I don't remember what Edward uses though
Travel log
@@CarbonMage thanks
sheska is one of mynes people
