12/2020 I finally got the hat pattern up! Video is here - • Fisherman's Rib Hat - ... It is knit in the round so slightly different to stitch but an exact match.
1/14/2023 - I made a new video on how to fix mistakes so you nice folks don’t have to keep starting over! • How to Fix Fisherman's...
Materials: Can be made in any yarn with appropriate needles but I used a large skein of Bernat Softee Chunkee in Grey Ragg, and size 11/8.0mm needles. amzn.to/3FaKJY7 (amazon link)
Pattern: Cast on any odd number of stitches - more for a wider scarf, fewer for a more narrow one. For the sample scarf I used 21.
Knit 5 rows for garter st border.
Row 1: K3, p1, *k1b, p1. Rep from * until 3 sts remain, k3.
Row 2: K3, k1b, *p1, k1b. Rep from * until 3 sts remain, k3.
Repeat Rows 1- 2 for pattern until desired length, you are near to running out of yarn, or you are bored :-)
Knit 6 rows, bind off and weave in ends.
I'm a _longtime_ beginner to knitting LOL. I put it down for so long in between projects, that I have to watch videos to remember. My son requested a larger scarf for our Canadian winters. This is something new & different. Thank you for this neat little pattern. I'm working it now 🤗🥂
I’m in the middle of making the scarf and I love it. I actually now have a pattern, that is absolutely gorgeous, well installed in my brain so that I could pick up a ball of yarn and a set of needles and knit something without a written pattern. This is a real treasure to me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Also, I can now do knit below!
Wonderful! Thanks so much -
Love this pattern thanks for takin the time out to make this video, everybody gettin a handmade scarf for Christmas this year lol
Could I just recommend that knitters who are beginners, or not too experienced, or who suffer from Tremors (like me!) consider inserting a 'lifeline', every 8 rows or so? Because rectifying an error in Fisherman's rib is almost impossible. So if you insert a lifeline (use a tapestry needle, and a contrasting yarn in a finer gauge) even if you have to undo 3 or 4 rows, it's far, far better to do that - than to discover that, damn, you cannot for the life of you understand how to fix this mistake! - and have to UNDO - THE - WHOLE - DAMN - THING! And yes. I am talking from experience, you betcha! So use lifelines. They're not called 'lifelines' for nuthin'...!
Thank you somuch this what I need for my husband I'll make one🤞for this Winter
Thank you so much for this Tutorial! Daughrer requested a scarf, and is fussy and she loves this one! I enjoyed making it and loved how both sides are the same. I have been crocheting way longer than knitting, and once I got the pattern down I flew through it. Thanks again, God bless!
I’m new to knitting, (2 weeks into it), and this video is incredibly easy to follow! Thank you so much!
I love this pattern. Thanks so much for sharing!❤
I am making this this with a super bulky yarn that I've had for years. I started out with 19 stitches across bur it was too wide for a teenage boy's scarf so I went down to 13 stitches across. PERFECT. And it's just wonderful!!! It makes so fast and it's amazingly warm. So thick and soft. The pattern is so easy too!!! I will be making one of these for lots of other folks..me next! And I'm going to make the hat for me too. THANKS SO MUCH. I can't remember when I've been so pleased with a knitting project. Oh, land the border is perfect!
Good evening, I came across this stitch looking for another pattern, however I like how you explained the fisherman’s stitch with caution and a low tone voice. I will definitely try that pattern. Thank you 🙏 The Bronx New York Stay Coronavirus free
What a beautiful pattern. I knitted for years and never did this stitch before. I want to pick up the needles again and want a nice scarf. This is it 😊 Thank you 😊
Wonderful! Thanks so much
Great tutorial, thanks. Love your sense of humor, must be something in the name. 😉
Thank you for putting this together. You have taught me a lot as a new knitter. I love your tutorials, so easy to follow!
Glad it was helpful!
The best explanation I’ve see of this pattern! Very clear and concise. Excellent demonstration. Easy for me to understand and replicate as new lefty knitter! Thanks very much!
Thank you so much for your kind words!
Nice
The first row I have to cast on? I have bulky polyacryl wool .
I have difficulties knitting down the stitch below since it is very tight.
Wool is for 8 needle.
Te pregunto si todo ti tutorial hacerlo en español o que se pueda traducir ya que muy bonito tu tejido y es bello. Estaría muy agradecida. Soy de Chile y me encantó tu tejido. Gracias
OMG This helps SO much with fishermen's stuff!! Thank you! I'm excited to make this scarf :)
Watched you for the first time and loved it .ThankYou Very Much.
Glad you enjoyed it!
It is called Mufflar. Teach me scarf. Cap type with trying facility.
Love that it looks the same on both sides. Nice clear instructions.
Thanks!
Thank you so much for this video, I have my next project😍I am new to knitting and appreciate you making these easy to follow tutorial vids🙏🙏
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much!!! This is lovely! Can you show us how to attach new yarn in the middle of this work if you run out?
took me about 8 tries to figure out how to do the knit below stitch, but once i got it it looks fantastic! thank you!
Glad I could help!
I like this version a lot. Thank you for sharing. ❤
Very well explained, easy to follow, thank you
So helpful for a beginner to knitting! Thank you so so much for a great tutorial : )
Thank you Mary Beth! I’ve been looking for this specific knitting pattern for months to make a blanket for my granddaughter. Your video is very descriptive and easy to follow. Thanks again for taking the time to make your videos.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks. I knitted the pattern, very nice.
I'm a beginner, and the only problem I keep having is when I lose track of where I am due to having to put my work down for whatever reason, when I come back to it, I tend to K1b when I should have p1. I'd love to see a tutorial on how to undo it. (At this point ... frogging the entire project and starting over is where I'm at .... however, I keep finding that I'm K1b as I get further along.) I'd love to be able to learn how to undo it so I can save myself the frustration of having to redo the entire project. Thanks in advance if you can help.
This sounds weird but two things - 1)is look at the video again where it shows you the difference between the stitch that takes a K1B (which looks like a loop or what knitters call a V), and the stitch that takes a purl (looks like a little knot, also called a purl bump). 2) I am going to say that ripping this stitch back isn’t easy because you have open stitches on two different rows - the one you were knitting in and the one below. I would try to drop the stitch that looks wrong instead of ripping the whole row, and pick it up with a crochet hook. Sadly there’s no super simple trick to that.
@@hookedforlifewithMBT i also find a purl bump looks like a hangman's noose.makes it alot easier to tell for me. i loved your video.. all the others start with even number of stitches.
I finally did it! Here is the undo video - ua-cam.com/video/ItIr4rcZbqw/v-deo.html
I've been looking for this stitch, I just didn't know what to call it!! I think it would be great for a sweater or hat!! Thank you!
What type of wool?
Love the video. Especially teaching on how to identify stitch yr working. Curious why it starts with Knit 5 rows and then ends by knitting 6 rows?
When one uses a long tail cast-on, as I usually do, the cast on row counts as a knit row. So cast-on + 5 rows = 6 rows, 6 rows at the end to match. Sometimes I will also add or subtract a row at the end when changing from a pattern stitch to a border to keep RS/WS consistent. Thanks for watching!
This is a great "chunky" pattern! Thanks for the easy explanation!
Hi can a blanket be knitted for babies and adult blankets. Thank you
Yes absolutely you could use this stitch for any size blanket! Simply cast on more stitches, and use an even number.
@@hookedforlifewithMBT I too want to make a blanket. In your video you said to use an odd number of stitches. Did I not understand that correctly? Is it different if you are increasing the size of the item?
Repeat Rows 1- 2 for pattern until desired length, you are near to running out of yarn, or you are bored ...or it's one hour away from giving scarf as gift on Christmas day!!!
That too :-)
This is a very wonderful and easy pattern! Thank you for sharing! And I understand why you would hesitate to say that the there is a right side row and wrong side row, since both sides are the same row pattern, but for me personally, I distinguish between the right side and wrong side rows, as when the tail is at the front of the project, I call it the right side, and when the tail is on the back of the project, I call it the wrong side. But I understand what you're saying, and again, I thank you very much for sharing! It's a beautiful scarf, and I love knitting!
Hello, would this patten work well with double knit wool please, thank you 🏴
Yes the stitch works fine in DK - it will either be more narrow, or you could add some stitches to the cast on.
Great video! So easy to understand. Thank you so much. Can’t wait to make this scarf.
This is so well explained, thank you. I made a hat in the round using this stitch, it worked out great. I did a regular knit 1, purl 1 for 2 inches, then started the fisherman’ rib. I cast on an even number of stitches, and worked a repeat of 2 rows. First row I worked: knit 1, then a purl 1 below. The second round: knit 1 below, then purl 1. It’s a little harder because you need to remember which row you are on. I had to learn how to correct mistakes. The pattern makes the project so fluffy and warm, I love it and now want to find out how to make a hood with a scarf attached for the very cold days. Sorry, now I just noticed you have a video for a hat and I will subscribe for your channel. Thanks a bunch😊
I've just discovered your channel by chance and am delighted with this fisherman's rib pattern. I have enough yarn for a generous scarf and a pair of fingerless gloves for a dog-walking friend. Thank you very much for displaying the pattern.
Very Clear Explanation. Thank you!
Puedes poner subtitulo en español ??
Thankyou for the detailed clear instructions
You’re welcome - thank you for the nice comment!
love frm kashmir
Hi, I just went on her site but can not find the pattern for the scarf.. I've fallen in love with yours so look need help
I too want to make a blanket. In your video you said to use an odd number of cast ons but in the comments you said to use an even number. Did I not understand that correctly? Is it different if you are increasing the size of the item?
I am finding it difficult to undo n redo the stitches when some thing goes wrong. Can u pl explain how to do it?
How to Fix Fisherman's Rib in Knitting
ua-cam.com/video/ItIr4rcZbqw/v-deo.html I just made you (and everyone else who asked :-) a video!
Thank you.nice stitch.í'm beginning my fisherman stitch scarf right now.
Made one...turns out very pretty. Thank you for this video and your detailed instruction
Could this be a throw? How many stitches would one cast on if possible?
It could absolutely be a throw - I would make a little sample in the yarn I wanted to use then do the math from there for how big I wanted the throw to be.
I’m a permanent beginner and I’m confused. Faster than I can absorb.
I am sorry it goes too fast for you but I have to admit I like the description "permanent beginner"!
Loved this video! I had to restart once because i wasn't paying attention! If i would have been paying attention to the stitch placement i wouldn't of had to restart. Oops.
Thanks! Stuff happens and once it gets going it’s relatively easy to see what’s up so you don’t make mistakes!
Camarae Cavaness -😂😂 Me too!! 😂😂😂
Thanks so much. I really appreciate your style of teaching.
Thankyou xx
I need this video in SLOW motion when it comes to the “knit one below.” I still don’t get it.
I believe there is a button you can click under settings that makes it play at half speed if that helps!
Thank you so much for making this stitch so easy to learn
No se cuantos puntos montastes
Can you alternate the rib stitch with regular stitches to make a pattern?
You would have to test it out. I expect the gauge would be different which might make the sides not be straight. Although that could be a design element!
I am just wondering something...in the first part of the video, you say to knit 5 rows all the way across then later in the video when finishing the scarf you say to knit 6 rows across then bind off. Is this correct? Why six at the end and not five? Thank you for this lovely pattern. I am just picking knitting back up after putting it aside for a few years due to an injury. This is a nice one to get back into the 'swing' of it, I am knitting it for a friend. ;)
When you use a long-tail cast-on which I think I did here it counts as 1 knit row. Basically you just want the borders to be even, however you get there is fine!
can i use straight knitting needles for this project?
Absolutely I am just one of those people who uses circulars for everything
Thanks for that! Just subscribed. I’m a new knitter and this video was so easy to follow.
I've just done very little knitting for now.. I'm not sure how to frog if I go wrong... I'm taking all the courage to start this pattern coz you are an amazing teacher... Wish me luck...❤️ Thank you for this video
You can do it! And you can always run a lifeline when you have some of it done that you are happy with just in case you have to rip back. By running a lifeline a mean taking a strand of a different color of yarn and running in through a row of stitches you are sure is correct. If you have to rip back, the lifeline will prevent you from ripping too far.
I made my son a scarf from this pattern. He loved it‼️❤️💕
That's great! That one in the video went to my niece :-)
Thank you for this easy to follow. It’ll be my first pattern. I’m always a little confused by the number of stitches. While the needle size recommended on my yarn (a nice Icelandic wool) is the same as you’re using yours looks chunkier so I’m worried it’ll be too narrow. Perhaps I’ll practice for a while to make sure I’ve got it down then redo for 25? Thanks again for the super clear instructions!
Thank yu for your nice tutorial. Would 375 yds of wool be enough to knit a decent size scarf?
Depends on the weight of the yarn? Worsted or bigger, yes! Fingering or sport or DK that may not be enough.
Hi, just found this and love it! New subscriber. You make it look so easy
Hi, if I'm starting with a P1 but ending with a K1below before the 3 knit stitches, will that throw off the pattern/ would it be better if I did 2 P1 stitches at the end instead of ending with the K1below?
It should not throw off the pattern it just won’t be exactly symmetrical and no one will ever notice that :-)
Great tutorial Mary Beth, thank you very much 😊
Great tutorial!❤
Great pattern. The six K knit rows at the end, is it six rows plus the cast off row, or is the cast off row the sixth row? Thank you.
Beautiful going to make it love the gray.
Oooo, I really like this scarf. It looks warm and easy to make. So glad I stumbled across this site. I'm a simple knitter, will subscribe. Thank you so much, going to find my yarn . Happy New Year!
Thanks all the way from India, beautiful and very well explained. Being a beginner just loved it.
Glad it was helpful!
I have no idea what pearl 1 means it would be great if u could zoom in to the stitch for a super starter who finished her first scarf :)
I need to join the yarns for this, how do I do that?
I've been knitting for 3 years, and I think this is the first time I've used a garter stitch since I first learned to knit. I always use stockinette. Unfortunately I haven't been working on one sitting, and I lost count of my rows. With the garter stitch being the same on both sides, how do I tell the right from the wrong side?? I'm doing a border of 5 instead of 3 like you did, but I still don't know how to tell if I've done one complete forward and backwards pass or not
If you have some pattern established, which it sounds like you do, knit your 5 stitches for your border then look closely at the next stitch on the left-hand needle. If it looks like a purl bump you start with a purl, if you have an enlarged stitch that looks like the right side of stockinette you would start with a K1b.
💕💕
Me encanto tu tejido, y deseo poder hacerlo
Thank you so much for this video. No annoying background music but just your beautiful voice talking to us. Will make this scarf for my son in Canada.
You are so welcome!
Thank you. You made this so easy
Great and easy instructions, thank you so very much!
I can't wait to make this. I. Actually thinking of making it a little longer and turning it into a pocket scarf. Thanks so much . Very 3asy to understand love your videos
Thanks so much!
I'm definitely going to make this (I'm new to knitting and it doesn't look hard) I probably give it to my mom
I’m looking for black and orange wool. Harley colors. Anyone ever seen this combo
I have not but I will keep my eyes out. What weight?
Super clear video!! Thanks so much. I just found you and have subscribed.
Thank you for this lovely tutorial. I love it! For a child would 13 stitches be enough? The kids are 4 to 6 year olds or should I do 15?
I would lean more towards 15, simply because the fabric tends to draw in in width a little bit.
Since my scarves using your tutorial were such a hit, I decided to make twisted headbands/ear warmers with this stitch to match the scarves :)
Nice!
I am in the middle of knitting a scarf with this pattern using your tutorial. I LOVE how easy it is to follow and so easy to put down then pick up right where you left off. Thank you for sharing how to make it! 😀😀
Thanks for your kind words!
@@hookedforlifewithMBT I have just finished my scarf and oh, it's so thick and beautiful & I love it! Thank you again 😀
The best video for knitting in Fishermans Rib, really easy to follow.👍
Thank you!
Ty for pattern. I made this and it looks amazing 😃
I am so glad! Thanks for letting me know!
This is super gorgeous, gonna have to add this one to my list of projects. Your instructions are very clear. Thanks so much for sharing this pattern.
You are so welcome!
Thank you so much! Going to run and get yarn RIGHT NOW hahah thank you!
You are so welcome!
Is there a matching hat/beret?
There isn’t but that’s a good idea!
There is now. Thanks for asking for it! ua-cam.com/video/oKINIwDiopQ/v-deo.html
Is there a video explaining how to fix a dropped stitch or like maybe messed up and linked two?
There is not but that’s a really good idea! I have extended family camping out in my studio for quarantine but let me see if I can kick them out for a little bit :-)
Very nice! I definitely will give this a go. I may try the other variation with the knit row for a hat.😆 Thank you for this very nice and easy pattern.
Can we use this pattern for ,asking a men’s sweater.
Absolutely - it works in a lot of different projects just know it is warm!
Thanks very much
Clear explanation
Thank you!
Would you block this pattern once complete?
I would not, personally, I would be afraid to lost the density of the stitch which is the part I like. Maybe run a light steam over the borders so they stay flat?
how come when i've tried it, the row always starts with a pearl and doesn't alternate? I'm effectively knitting a one row pattern
Try having an odd number of stitches . Three knit stitches each end and odd number of stitches for centre rib.
