Development of analytical skills is essential and you cannot get that by learning about tax law and how "life" works. Math, physics, programming etc. all force you to solve hard problems and develop your critical thinking. Also in the last few years of high-school students, at least in some European countries, can focus more on ceratin topics like languages vs. math/physics.
One of the issues i find with school is that they rarely give u connections. It doesn't matter what u want to do if u don't know anyone in the trade or how to get in.
I agree with that, I just think there's more important subjects they should consider over the depth they go into some current ones. I value critical thinking and problem solving very highly, learning how to file your taxes was just one example because that could probably be taught in a couple hours and is something most people will encounter in their life. I just think a lot of education system are very old-school and could use a revamp using new research.
u can develop "analytical skills" by playing videos games and picking your butt. this is a bunch of strawman nonsense that doesn't disprove his point that public schooling is a huge waste of time, memorizing useless nonsense. Speaking of analytical skills... maybe you should spend another couple years drawing posters and solving chemistry problems
@@BensBackpack I agree with you on the fact that school is a bit out-dated at the moment and kids should get subjects that are a bit more tangible in real life. My only argument was really that science-based subjects that most kids hate in school, actually have an enormous impact later in life but then again what should be replaced? Literature, Sports, Music and painting - I wouldn't be able to take something out at the moment. At least not for kids, maybe end of high-school to prepare them for the life afterwards? But then they have to prepare for end of school exams and focus on the very subjects we're considering to replace.
Critical Thinking, History, Home Economics (cooking, taxes & basic home maintnence), Ethics, English (or whatever your country's language is, this is basic reading & writing), Arithmatic & Statistics. I think these are the only classes we really need, history would probably have to be split up into a few seperate classes but everything beyond that could be elective & we'd probably be fine. You'd still want to offer music, science, computer stuff, & higher maths amongst other things so that students could explore topics they may like to persue as they grow up, but they shouldn't be mandatory.
I don't think you commented on that but moon shield is actually insane with smelly walls, onions generate almsot as much mana as blue berries, in addition to the armor and poison
I started watching you yesterday, i'm loving the content. Very chill, you often explain what you have in mind, it's great to learn the game :D (also I forgot to sub thanks for the reminder lol)
I feel like not picking up the ghost for Moon Healing burst, and maybe pivoting into a little more healing in the build seems like a missed opportunity. You healed for 345 at Moonrise in that last round, that would've been instant 115 hit from the Ghost. Fun build nonetheless.
Funny thing I comment back to back on your videos to talk about math ^^ Basically, if you dont start teaching math early enough, even the seemingly more specific stuff, there is no way youre ever gonna succeed in any math related subject at university, nothing computer related, nothing science related, nothing technical related. One can argue, that this is a rather specific group, but you would notice it if this group went missing.
I don't make much use of subscribing to channels because I have no problem just looking up the channel again if I want to check it out and aren't getting its videos recommended, but I do leave a like on almost every video I watch.
School is more about learning how to learn than the actual learning of the subject. "I'm never going to use this math in my life." You might not but you develop insight to how things work, critical thinking and problem solving. I always hear from people how they hated math word problems. But these problems are teaching you more than just the raw numbers and math. Those people saying "I'm never going to use this in my life" probably still wouldn't understand how to do their taxes even if they were required to take a taxes class.
Every patch is very interesting, but as long as unbalance smorc is into the game there is no reason for me to reinstall this game, better watch these videos :)
Love your videos Ben. but don't talk education. Education isn't about teaching you tasks, it is about teaching you to learn and how think critically, and how problem solve. These are things you need in life more than anything. If you are successfully taught how to learn, then they don't need to teach you tax laws, something that is always changing, because you can learn them for yourself.
@@BensBackpack Talk about whatever you want, just giving you some advice so you don't look like an ape. Education is clearly not your area of expertise.
I might be biased, but I really don't get why math is always the first subject in the discussion on what subjects are useless later in life. Yeah you might not need the quadratic formula etc. but you need critical and logical thinking literally everywhere and that is what math teaches you: - Most university subjects have one or more math courses included cause they need even more math than school teaches. Literally any economic, technical or natural science degree has at least a few pure math courses and most social sciences have at least one. - If you start a business you better know basic maths to manage your finances and plan ahead a bit - Lots of crafts need an understanding of geometry and measuring. Tl, dr: don't always think of the stuff that is directly taught but rather think what kind of skills are developed by learning something.
I love math and i do think it's one of the most important subjects. It was just the first example that came to mind, I'm talking about the depth of the course, not the skills or general knowledge it teaches you
I like you, Ben, but a stream and comments sections aren't places to talk about things when you don't have specialized educators, sociologists, developmental psychologists, etc. to participate. Not that I want to discourage conversation, but too many people hear streamers say stuff like the math and education comment and their misinformed confirmation bias takes them multiple steps backwards.
brother it's the internet I'll always give my opinion on things, I'm not stating them as facts. I start discussions and give my takes. By that logic no one can talk about any topic without any experts available??
@@BensBackpack I get what you're saying, and the reason I and many others are here is for your personality and vibes. But I think having a platform bears a responsibility to be mindful of what you're saying, and even though you weren't like "school is dumb" you have the capacity to entrench ideas in people that they've developed in spite of or without evidence or research. It's disingenuous to say "any opinion" is equivalent to saying an essential institution has failed people while pointing out one of the most important things it teaches (and by that I mean the critical thinking that is taught through math). Anyway, I'm not here to shit on your opinion, because I think you were right about things like institutions need updating, but I resolved a while ago not to let things go uncontested when it is such a macro-level argument that is beyond the scope of most of our understanding or expertise, if'n that makes sense. That said, fun video as always, and thank you for the textual riposte.
I think the issue with the internet is that nuance gets lots. Math IS super important, the general knowledge, foundation, skills and critical thinking is very valuable. My point was that the depth of some subjects could probably be handled differently and courses should be revised and updated according to new research from actual professors. And new subjects could be introduced, without sacrificing the essentials for a good foundation. That's the nuance, but people extrapolate from my simple take whatever they want and i dont have the time nor energy for a legit discussion like this while playing backpack.. However i do have to say it's fun to see everyone leave these comments and join the conversation. Also, im a content creator, im a yapper. It's hard not to give opinions on random shit all the time, but i try my best to evaluate if what i say could have an impact on people.
I had to relearn to count among other things (don't huff paint) It's curious how when I was relearning many of the values I had developed over my lifetime how the focus on the future became possible around the same time I learnt to count.
this is a joke right? I almost never ask for subs on youtube (calling it whining is insane), also subs on youtube don't give me any money at all.... only watchtime does. I should in theory do it every video because the verbal call to action literally increases my sub growth by like 500%, BUT I DON'T. I take editing jobs on the side when I need more reliable income, I know content creation isn't safe. I never asked for "safe". It's just such a fucking wild thing to comment, this annoys me because I especially try to push engagement as little as possible onto my viewers, I didn't even take ANY sponsorships in like over a year (none on this channel). Educate yourself.
Here is a fun little fact: because of the callout in this video, it's sitting right now at 1,5k views, +22 subscribers and 111 likes. That's 1/70 people subscribing and 1/13 people liking. All of my previous videos have an average of 4 subscribers and 350 likes (for having between 6k-12k views) which is about 1/2250 people subscribing or 1/25 people liking. I think you see how massive the difference is? That's why most youtubers do it, but again, this doesn't directly translate into ANY money. However, better engagement could lead to videos being recommended more. Why do you think over 50% of my viewers aren't subscribed?? Because I never do any call to actions! Subscribers are a vanity metric on youtube, they just boost your ego and status, not your views or revenue. Does this clarify it a bit more? But the 2nd part of your comment idk how to answer lol.. if people want safe money they should indeed get a job that offers that, has nothing to do with this.
