In this video I'm comparing the new Eventide Polyphony algorithm to the classic Digitech Drop for some bari-tones (get it?! - haha). What do you think? Which one sounds better to your ears? Or is it a draw?

Thumbs up for “A change of season” !
Thank you! 🙏🏻😃 It‘s still a timeless classic!
Great to see you using our AMP1 😊!!!
It‘s a great sounding amp! And all those features in such a small and portable package… I love it! Can’t wait to hear the Amp X! 😁🙌🏻
Thanks for that. Still discovering all the wonderful things my H90 can do.
You‘re welcome! And same here… There‘s a lot to discover! 😁
@@manuelbastian Yes, I just discovered the 1.2.2 H90 Control Software along with 1.3 software for update! Guess they released it early December.
@@LetWatersSing I can’t wait for the ios app and bluetooth functionality…
@@manuelbastian Yes, me too! I'm very excited about the H90.
Really appreciate the video. Had a Drop D a few years ago but latency and artifacts were too much for recording. I have an Eventide H90 on the way. Are your parches available for the H90 free or for sale?
Thank you, Geoffrey! You won‘t even need a patch, just use Polyphony, set it to whatever pitch you wanna tune down to, set the mix to 100%… I think you can see my settings in the video. But it‘s really nothing special! 🙂 Hope this helps!
@@manuelbastian Thank You Brother!!
I rather the H90 for versatility, but more importantly I love your crunchy guitar tone!
Thank you! 🙂 The Amp 1 is a great amp… 🙌🏻
Good for all you who have the H90! Enjoy and Best Regards and Best Wishes!
Thank you! 🙂 And right back at you!
A Change of Seasons for the win!
It‘s the first song I think of when I think of seven string guitars… 🥰 and it still hasn‘t lost its magic…
Hi Manuel, a Helix user here 😉
I regularly use the Poly Capo on my LT with my bass and this PolyPhony effect sounds about the same.
Without looking at the remaining tonal quality, how low can you drop with the H90? How many semi-tones?
Many thanks in advance!
Hey Peter, sorry, I jumped ship and sold the H90 last week. But I think it was two octaves?! Cheers! 🙂
@@manuelbastian Wow that’s a lot! Thanks Manuel! 😉👍🏻
@@peterschermers If my memory serves me right… 😅
I would LOVE to replace my Digitech Drop with the H90. I only need to drop entire guitar to Eb tuning for about 5 songs in the 40 song set. I did this easily with Fractal FM3, but it was a PITA to be able to get to the actual preset. I'm hoping H90 will be very easy to build an Eb preset (or two, different delays or verbs for algorithm #2)?
I find it pretty easy to create a preset once you have read the manual. And of course you can create as many presets as you like.
Hey, I've been looking at Twonotes Revolt preamp. It is one that is fully analog in the market, have you tried it yet?
Nope, not yet… But maybe I should give it a try! 🙂
@20:24 Spot on about latency! I think this is one of the most frustrating issues with recording on a computer or using effects. Amazing though how much things have improved over 10 years, but it's still an issue and it drives most of us crazy because it destroys your concentration.
It‘s getting better and if you monitor through a console while recording, it‘s not really an issue. But when you play modeling stuff, like the Kemper or a Helix and then use a few digital stompboxes and maybe a wireless system, the latency will add up and become really noticeable to the point where it feels harder and harder to play in the groove…
@@manuelbastian I play through lots of effects, always have. Problem is, it's expensive to buy these boxes! It would be Very cool if Eventide made a special Pitch algorithm that would do just one voice like the Digitech Drop. They could do it easy. In fact the H90 is based on the same system they use for the H9000 but not nearly the same horsepower. I must admit, the Drop sounds great in your demo, I thought it would smoke the H90 for a minute? They both serve their purpose.
@@LetWatersSing You can‘t really use the drop clean, but distorted you can barely hear the artifacts and it feels really direct, it‘s easy to use,… While the H90 sounds better, the difference isn‘t nearly as huge as I expected it… Maybe they come up with a simple algo for down tuning.
Monitor with headphones with an analogue desk. The distance you are from the amp/studio/stage monitors can easily add more latency than a number of digital devices combined. Combining the two is always going to be a problem.
Nice demo but very noisy
Do you think it is possible to get a sound like archetype Tim Anson from neural dsp with the H90 with +3 +5 +12 and +24 with a good left and right pan ?
It can do convincing pitch sounds for sure. But in order to make it sound like a broken needle printer from the 80s, you have to play it like that, too… 😜
@@manuelbastian 😂
I’m here for this. That’s a great sound. Did you try it? I wonder how he does it live.
Brother we need more h90 videos, it’s been a long time! 🙏🏻
@@cody3078 I know, but I have since sold it. I got it mainly for reverbs and I just did not like the algorithms… 😬 And I though it was pretty complicated to program.
@@manuelbastianit is a lot of work to program and I’m shocked how many of the factory presets sound absolutely terrible! I believe there are good sounds in there but it’s a huge amount of work to create them 😮💨.
Did you find a reverb pedal you like?
@@cody3078 I‘ve just used my old Roland SRV-2000 here in the studio. I‘m looking closely at the IR stuff, though. Would be awesome to load some BX20 sounds and use them live.
I like that acoustic body resonance I heard and the clean sound of the H90. You pulled a ton of tones out of just the H90's polyphony. Very impressive!
Thanl you, Mark! 🙂 Glad you like it…
Glad you put the effort into making this video.
I am looking at getting the H90.
I will tell you with these comparisons the drop sounds just right.
It has a natural tone.
The H90 sounds digital.
I would not expect that out of a product in 2023 and cost as much as it does.
I’m not sure how the feel is with theses units but that’s what I’m hearing.
I’m not sure how much closer you can get to the drop with adjusting the parameters off the pedal.
Plus one for the drop with this comparison.
Your doing a good job.
Look forwards to your next video.
Hey Michael!
Thank you for the kind words! Much appreciated! As for the comparison - exactly the way I hear it! To be fair: The Drop has those artefacts where it feels like the sound drops out for the fraction of a second. While it doesn’t matter too much in a distorted sound, it really sucks when playing clean. This is one thing the H90 definitely does better! And to be fair even more: The Polyphony is supposed to do much more than a single voice like the drop, so the processing power is split up to do weird stuff. I‘m sure Eventide will develop a drop tuning algorithm at some point… And given the processing power this thing has, it will eat the Drop for breakfast. Let‘s keep our fingers crossed! 🙂
I think the H90 wins. There’s more clarity and the tracking seems smoother especially on the high strings
Thanks for chiming in! 🙂 I see your point…
@@manuelbastian which one was your favorite? (love your videos by the way)
@@drewyowell1 Thank you so much! I‘m glad you like my videos! 😁 Hmm… I liked the H90 sound-wise, but I felt the Drop had less latency, but then I wasn’t sure, I loved and hated both while shooting them out. But at the end of the day I guess the H90 takes the cake for the better sound. Would I still keep the Drop on the board? Probably… It‘s really easy to use, bend down, turn one knob, no menus… Plus it‘s true-bypass and doubles as an octaver, if you don‘t need to tune down in your every set…
@@manuelbastian yeah that makes total sense. I wonder how if the H90 can do a whammy pedal effect with an expression pedal…🤔
@@drewyowell1 That should work, although I heard, that the semitone steps are audible, but I never tried it myself. Plus should that be the case I‘m sure they‘ll fix it.
DIGITECH DROP! YESS
😁🙏🏻
Hey Manuel!!! Great comparison between these units. I have the Drop and I really can feel the minimun latency but this is not a problem. All my guitars are tuned on D standard and I dropped the tune to B Standard. Main issue to is the lack of treble ( produced by downtuning effect), even I compensate for the lack of treble with an eq but really doesn't sounds good to me....
Hey man! Thank you! 🙏🏻🥰 I know exactly what you mean. And I tried to solve it the same way! I put an eq after it to try and get more useful sounds. That‘s really better with the H90 and the auto-eq feature!
@@manuelbastian thanks to you for this honest review. The eventide has de Eq and that's really awesome 😎
@@AmishMutantPower You‘re very welcome! 🙂
@@manuelbastian 🙏☺️
1) For live gig, never go past -2 semitones. If the singer needs more, tune guitar and Bass to standard D and then use -2 semitones max. Drop D works excellent in those applications. Same thing for Bass. This is tested on more then 100 gigs, never single problem.
2) Never record anything important with any "transpose" pedal, you're way better with detuning guitar. For live ,very ok, for recording , big no!
3) Unless someone comes with something that can do way,way better, Drop D is still The King of "transpose" for real life, band, singer application.
Thank you for your effort and if you ever decide to redo this "fight", do it in a way I describe above, because no one will ever use -5 semitones down 'cause sounds like a garbage.
Thank you for your input. While I understand where you‘re coming from wanting the best possible sound tuned down, I of course wanted to show what these pedals are capable of in more extreme settings. How people use it is totally up to them. I would rather use a baritone in the studio or tune down, except for a small part. But in a mix those artefacts might disappear completely, so why not use the pedals?! Your trick is actually pretty cool and that is what I have done live as well… I‘m usually already in Eb, when I put it in Drop D, it‘s Db and when I turn on the pedal at -2, I already get a B like a 7 string. And of course it does sound better, than having the pedal set to a full fourth down. However, I think this is more like a tool, that will get you through one song on the list, as opposed to an adequate substitute for a 7 string or a baritone, so I would use it at extreme settings if I needed to play standard tuning voicings tuned down. Let‘s hope, that those algorithms get better and better as we move along. 🙂 Thank you again!
I don’t hear a $650 difference.
Me neither, but to stay fair: The H90 does about a million things really frickin good! 😃
Machmut it Nr 2
Nr 1 it Helmut
Aber nur in meinem Herzen… 😁♥️

Which one do you prefer?
@@manuelbastian really hard to say, easier in person i think but from this video i can hear more high frequency using the h90, other than that they are pretty close... I will probably get a Drop but i was curious to see how it performs compared to the new products... i mean Drop is like 10 years old lol
@@matrixmodulator Playing them won‘t make it easier. The Drop sounds really shitty on clean stuff, but quite okay on gainier stuff… It feels good, though… I‘m sure Eventide will eventually build a desicated algorithm fot drop tunings and it will be awesome!
@@manuelbastian Ah i didnt realise Drop sounded bad with clean stuf.. i'll listen again...
@@matrixmodulator It sounds like it‘s dropping out…
I think the drops got more booty
And that is what we want… 😁🍑
