The game is set 200 years after the events of Oblivion and takes place in Skyrim, the northernmost province of Tamriel, a continent on the planet Nirn. Its main story focuses on the player's character, the Dragonborn, on their quest to defeat Alduin the World-Eater, a dragon who is prophesied to destroy the world.
Skyrim is a province in the very north of Tamriel. It is a cold and mountainous region. Skyrim has been home to both elven and human civilization since time immemorial. It is currently inhabited by the human race of Nords. The elven race of Falmer or Snow Elves occupied Skyrim until the late Merethic Era, when the final wave of Atmoran immigration, led by Ysgramor, occured. It is bordered by Morrowind to the east, Cyrodiil to the south, Hammerfell to the south-west, and High Rock to the west; the island of Solstheim lies to the north-east.

It's equally sweet and sad that the primary way kaidan knows how to show affection is through making himself useful, aka acts of service. Makes you think he's survived and lost a lot. That's interesting characterization.
