Wish i had u with me to put those skills to work on my engine, especially the part about the main bearing clearance, i never knew about that before but it makes absolute sense
Saw you post this video on the 68/69 facebook group. I've got a '68 of my own that I'm going to end up going through the engine sooner or later - subscribing! Great content.
Thanks Mark! Always glad to help... I restored my GTO, including painting it in my garage, without knowing what the heck I was doing. Ha, ha... if you ever have any questions, let me know. Just paying it forward now... Can't wait to see you get through your rebuild, and welcome to the FMG family. See ya soon.
Just passing on something you might already know but I 've always been taught when installing rings to clock the ring gaps 33 degrees apart oil rings at 12:00 2nd grove 4:00 and top ring groove @8:00 to create better cylinder seating
Thanks John.. I'm aware of the tribal knowledge... however, I think I'd much rather follow the instructions provided by @TotalSealPistonRings ,wouldn't you? Thanks again...

Hey Monty, building a Pontiac 350, top ring gap calculates to .019525, second ring .0214775, I’m thinking I should round both up, .020 and .022, do you think it would be wise to do so? First time with file fit and I’m scared!
I have a Pontiac 400 bored to 4.15 I’m building. I have total seal rings and Ross custom cnc dished pistons. I just finished gapping the rings and it says to use quickseat dry lube on the rings and cylinder walls. I seen you didn’t do that. Is it unnecessary if you just use light film of break in oil? Also ross no longer engraves the gram letters under the pistons anymore cause they are under a gram difference now. It threw me off when I called asking why they weren’t labeled. Thanks for the amazing videos. They are helping me along the way on my build.
@@FastMonty thank you! I have never heard of it ether it just said it in the install instructions for my total seal piston ring instructions. One most question… how to get your autograph for the man cave?
Another awesome video! I have been meaning to ask you what kind of oil do you use and filter I use AC Delco filter and Valvaline 10w30 + a quart of slick 50 I use the slick 50 because I share to God I felt the power difference on a Pontiac 350 that was worn out and when I tore it apart the rod bearings were fused to the crankshaft journal's!! Unreal but true so I know you will know something better thank you Monty.
Thanks! Crazy story. I only use WIX filters. Oil is Driven HR1 15W-50, here's a link from Butler, where they sell both. butlerperformance.com/i-31643387-butler-oil-change-kit-15w50-bpi-oc-kit.html?ref=search:https%3A%2F%2Fbutlerperformance.com%2Fsearch.html%3Fq%3Doil Thanks again!

Great job mike you got the slugs in the bore rock on brother. hey what cam did you go with this time around? Anyway stay cool I’m still in bodywork prison too hot for filler I had some bodywork questions what’s the best UA-cam link to ask you about them
Thanks James... gettin there... I'm happy with my same Butler Roller Cam. For body work, I would go to Eastwood's channel, and try and follow Kevin Tetz... ua-cam.com/video/kHEOmH0UILg/v-deo.html Hope that helps!
Because I'm a Pontiac guy too, I Am excited to see how far you are now on your engine rebuild Mike. This should make for a sweet running machine bud. Watching the progress, and the attention to detail you put into your GTO is making me anxious to finish my bird project! Did you go with the same cam profile as what you had?
What do you mean by one side? Flipping it over? If you're referring to grinding both "ends" at the same time, or not... I've never heard of doing just one. Doing them at the same time, with the tool I used, maintains the parallelism of each end. Hope that helps.
@@FastMonty not flipping them , yeah I meant only one side. I’ve seen so many people do it that way but doesn’t seem correct. Your way seems right as it would make both ends equally grinded
@@robm2630 Exactly. I could see if you didn't have the tool I have, one could just file one end, but you'd have to make sure it's symmetrical with the other end. As long as you're careful, and deburred, it'll work. Thanks Rob!

After filing the ring there is a burr on the ring. It's a good idea to use a small stone to remove the burr. At least that is what I have always done.
Yup, definitely need to remove the burrs on those rings. Doesn't matter what to use, just don't create another burr... ha, ha... thanks!

Nothing wrong with a slightly larger gap. Have fun, and take your time.

Is it true it’s better to file piston rings only on one side rather than both at same time

@@robm2630 Ohhh no, thank you! See ya!
So what would I want the gaps to be if I were boosting my Pontiac?
Good question... depends on how much boost, and your bore diameter. Pause the video at the 3:28 mark to see the chart.
@@FastMonty didn’t even notice that chart on my first watch, thanks
@@Ox78 No worries... I went pretty fast through that. Hope it helps.
