  • Traditionally: Suckers are propagated by extracting them from one field to another. This method lends itself to two weaknesses; diseases and pests are spread and large quantities of planting materials are not easy to acquire within short intervals.
In Vitro Techniques make use of laboratories wherein cells are cultured to produce plantlets. This is quite expensive.
In vivo techniques have to do with bending the pseudostem and decapitation. There is a great problem of disseminating diseases and pests if the mother plants are infested, but not treated with chemicals.
In vivo horticultural techniques of propagation are used to avoid major loopholes inherent in above techniques. These include:
    i) Multiplication of decorticated stem and
ii) PIF = Plants issued from stem bits (Plants Issue de Fragments de tiges)
Here, we use buds, dormant suckers, sword suckers as well as maiden suckers to rapidly propagate clean banana/plantain plantlets.

Thank you for this educative video.
My question is on the plant used for the multiplication.
What time (how many months) will the plantain plant/sucker be matured and uprooted for ex corm?

Ideally, it can be done from two to six months depending on variables such as variety, climatic conditions (temperature, soils, etc) and should be sizeable enough. However, we recommend that it should be when you can see the bunch so as to be sure of the variety of the plantain that you are propagating.

Can i use this technique on banana trees that are few at least 3 years old? Or this technique is only for young suckers?

It is best for sword suckers which are full of growth potentials. By using old suckers, you get fewer and fewer plantlets

Hi, thanks for your interest and inquiry. However, our subject here is focused on plant multiplication not on changing the behaviour of any variety into something else.
