    An important correction: ALL Orcas are part of the Dolphin family, but all Dolphins are Whales. So technically an Orca is both a Whale AND a Dolphin!

      we still do this to humans... so it seems foolish to only care about the handful of circumstances with orcas. honestly though it would be nice to have specific areas near the coast where humans can interact with wild orcas, they seem smart enough and curious enough to want to be near humans on their own terms.

    What I find really cool about orca evolution is that their ancestors came from land. Surviving on land is a very hard evolutionary pressure compared to water. It's almost as if the evolutionary traits that they picked up on land gave them the ability to become absolutely dominant in the oceans. For eg., where sharks will hunt and live alone, orcas coordinate in pods and have a learned culture.

    Orcas are crazy smart.
    We were only close to them for about 20 minutes in WA State back in 2010.
    In that 20 minutes, they got my Mom's bank account information and convinced her to transfer ½ her life savings to their pod. She was positive that one of the Orcas was a distantly related Pacific Ocean Prince and had been trying to get his massive inheritance to her for a while. It was just caught up in escrow and customs, and if she just paid the transaction fees she could free up her inheritance.
    Crazy smart, and devious.

Thus whenever they run across us they'll either ignore us or approach out of curiosity. They're also very careful when we're amongst them. They truly are amazing creatures.

I was honestly expecting the video to spend more time diving into the darker end of what happens when orcas are kept captive in Seaworld style conditions, but was very happy that the vast majority of it was focused on what makes them so amazing. I subscribe to a bunch of paleontology, biology, etc kind of channels and have certainly been fed a bunch of Orca videos over the years, but you really slammed this one out of the park. i've never thought orcas were smarter than i thought:) i've always considered them to be the second most intelligent beings on earth - somewhere i once read if an orca would complete a human IQ test he would score at about 5-6 points:) that's obviously just the statistical margin of coincidence if you count in that one question has up to eight possible answers, but the real shocker is that they apparently are ABLE to follow such a test in kind of a meaningful way, a shark (or dog for that matter) wouldn't even know what is asked of him.

      Keep in mind an IQ test is flawed even for humans, and it is designed for humans.
      Their intelligence is something we really do not comprehend. We have an inkling, and some evidence that suggests some minimum capacities. They may be more intelligent than we are. Or they may have the potential to be.
      Consider the intelligence of a person who had no education or significant socialization growing up. They don't just lack knowledge. Their ability to learn is diminished. We have grown up with tools and curricula to help us develop our intelligence and knowledge for thousands of years. Orcas don't have the same level of dexterity we have. Their intelligence may be more developed in other ways we don't understand. Or it may have the potential to develop far beyond what we could expect, if they had some interface with technology that gave them the kind of dexterity we benefit from.
      When it comes to human understanding of intelligence, one thing is certain: Our understanding is extremely limited. Arrogance has given us great confidence in areas we should not have such confidence. Animal intelligence is perhaps the best example.

      Even more than humans? even though they don’t do what we do like building rockets & going to the moon. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not doubting their intelligence, it’s just that some people make it sound like, they’re fully sentient. Like us humans (or that’s just me), but to me they’re still animalistic, (same, applies to elephants & non-human apes) because most of everything they do is for survival, from socialising to hunting. Yeah they like to play, but other animals can do that like dogs. The only treats that I find very intelligent of them. is that they make different vocalisations which is similar to us with different languages. And that they’re very emotional, self aware & compassionate. But that’s it, so to me there semi sentient meaning that they’re not fully sentient. But they’re close, but most times they’re still pretty animalistic (such as still following there primal instincts). You understand what I’m saying?

    • @SecureHandle
      @SecureHandle 4 місяці тому

      @@damian5528 Humans have a pair of hands, unfair to compare what we can do with hands to orcas, they are ocean animals and evolved as ocean animals, just like how humans are land animals and evolved as such. Orcas wouldn’t need a pair of hands in the ocean. 2. They are probably fully sentient, just because you’re human doesn’t mean you have more consciousness than other things. 3. Why would they not follow their primal instincts unless there’s a reason to suppress it? Humans follow primal instincts too sometimes and orcas need those primal instincts too. Please clarify the “semi sentient” because it sounds ignorant to me, why are “dogs” not fully sentient either anyways?

      I’m sorry I didn’t mean to be ignorant, so don’t take that the wrong way I don’t think animals are stupid, Definitely not. They have minds just not like ours. Because they’ve evolved to live & survive in their environments, that including orca whales. But the way they’ve learned to live & survive, has obviously made them more intelligent to the point. That when they’re not busy, surviving they like to socialise, play & they grief. But that’s as far as their intelligence can take them right? Whereas us we started out like that, until we began to evolve beyond, just living & surviving. We can create & do more things then they can do, that’s what I was trying to say & I guess semi sentient is the wrong word animals are indeed sentient.

    Our world is indeed fascinating. Even on this small planet Earth we already know for sure that there are several species of animals that are very different and very smart compared to others. I'm really looking forward to when we learn to communicate with animals like Orcas, I would be incredibly interested in asking them questions about various concepts or perhaps explaining them. They may not be able to understand mathematics, physics, etc., but they will probably be able to tell something related to things like compassion, emotion, and so on. This will also make it possible to understand how different animals are depending on the structure of the brain. By exploring them, we can be relatively prepared for meeting creatures from other planets, because I am convinced that they will be completely different and everything that we perceive as human beings (for example, art) will be very different. It's also amazing that I can experience emotions of satisfaction and joy thinking about it or writing about this topic. Stop killing orcas, humans, they may be smarter than humans in terms of empathy, don’t make them grief because you wouldn’t stand such a grief at all!

      @Orca_mammal 2 місяці тому +2

      But that's for later. During the encounter, size matters. A human could bite an elephant and it could get infected, doesn't mean the human won or it's a draw. Infection is more like a third party thing.
      It's the damage from the bite that matters the most, and in that case, a shark bite wouldn't faze an orca. Orcas weigh 6-8times more than great white. A bite from an orca would destroy a shark.@@CleverClover2023
