Signs/symptoms of a person who has low self-esteem:
    * Don't think of himself as worthy of obtaining/achieving sth
    * Put oneself low as compared to others
    * Being pessimistic about world: always expecting the worse possibility
    * Requires constant assurance from the spouse or sb else
    * Never wanna talk about one's negative side or issues
    * Quick to criticize or to find shortcomings of others: to make up for their own low self-esteem. Since they don't put themselves in high esteem, they want to bring others down to "their level" (as assumed by them), as well. This may happen due to jealousy, as well. If I have low self-esteem, I don't like to see others to succeed, because I consider that they become "higher" than myself because of succeeding.
    * They hold grudges for a long time: because once s/he forgive others, in his/her eyes, the offender doesn't remain as low as before
    * If a person has low self-esteem, they are prone to Satan's tricks: Satan convince them that you are such a hypocrite, you shouldn't behave as if you are holy
    * Low self-esteem affects each and every sector of a person's life including relationships, specially the relationship with Allah: s/he doesn't believe any longer that s/he is worthy of the mercy of Allah SWT
    * They tend to focus on their weaknesses instead of their strengths.
    How to build high self-esteem:
    1. Check your heart
    * One who has strong Imaan, he understands that those who have most taqwa, are the most honorable in the sight of Allah SWT. Thus his self-esteem does not depend on his worldly accomplishments/successes any more.
    * Check your intention and sincerity of works towards Allah SWT: Do I rely on my relationship with Allah SWT or do I rely on the # of likes in Facebook or what people think about me to measure my self-worth or to feel accomplished/fulfilled?
    * Check if you have any sickness/hypocrisy in your heart? Am I obsessed with my relationship with Allah SWT or am I obsessed about what people think/say about me? Do I get sad/depressed if people do not like me? Bear in mind that you will never find everyone to love/like you; but you can get Allah's love if you work according to Islam
    * How jealous am I towards others?
    * Am I arrogant?
    2. Define success for yourself: if my success depends on only worldly gains then there is a possibility that I will fail to achieve some of those goals and thereby my self-esteem will become low. Rather try to focus on improving your relationship with Allah SWT through your Ibadah and worldly works; that way no matter whether you succeed or fail in worldly goals, you can still get satisfaction by satisfying Allah SWT via your hard work and pure intention and as such your self-esteem remains intact.
    3. Set SMART goals: goals that are realistic/achievable for you and at the same time hard enough to encourage and challenge you.
    3. Focus more on your strengths than your weaknesses: Allah honored and gave some special talent to everyone. Sit down and find your strengths/talents and work on those strengths. If your strength is not studying medicine and you compare yourself with your friend who succeeded in med-school then you are jeopardizing your self-worth through this comparison.
    4. Don't be a perfectionist: Perfection is unattainable; every human being makes mistakes, stumbles, fails, ... If you think that you have to be perfect, you can be sure that you won't be able to keep yourself always in the highest standard (as does any other human being) and if you have low self-esteem, you will then beat yourself up and damage your self-esteem.
    5. Own/accept your weaknesses which you can't change: e.g. if you are bald/short don't feel bad about that. Accept that and try to focus on your strengths and on removing those of your weaknesses which you can change. Recall that you have some talents which no one else in the world has; so work on those instead.

We're living in an image-based society and we're inundated with images. Thank you for this. Not too many shuyukh are in touch with the masses & current social problems.
